Abstract:In this paper, we propose a symbolic-numeric algorithm to count the number of solutions of a zero-dimensional square polynomial system within a local region. We show that the algorithm succeeds under the condition that the region is sufficiently small and well-isolating for a k-fold solution z of the system. In our analysis, we derive a bound on the size of the region that guarantees success. We further argue that this size depends on local parameters such as the norm and multiplicity of z as well as the distances between z and all other solutions. Efficiency of our method stems from the fact that we reduce the problem of counting the roots of the original system to the problem of solving a truncated system of degree k. In particular, if the multiplicity k of z is small compared to the total degrees of the original polynomials, our method considerably improves upon known complete and certified methods. We see a series of applications of our approach. When combined with a numerical solver in the fashion of an a posteriori certification step, we obtain a certified and reliable method for solving polynomial systems while profiting both from the efficiency of the numerical algorithm and the reliability of the symbolic approach. An alternative application results from incorporating our algorithm as inclusion predicate into an elimination method. For the special case of bivariate systems, we experimentally show that this approach leads to a significant improvement over an existing state-of-the-art elimination method.

Abstract:We (re)introduce the circle method into arithmetic statistics. More specifically, we combine the circle method with Bhargava's counting technique in order to give a general method that allows one to treat arithmetic statistical problems in which one is trying to count orbits on a subvariety of affine space defined by the vanishing of a quadratic invariant. We explain this method by way of example by computing the average size of $2$-Selmer groups in the families $y^2 = x^3 + B$ and $y^2 = x^3 + B^2$. In the course of the argument we introduce a smoothed form of Bhargava's aforementioned method, as well as a trick with which we formally deduce that the above averages are $3$ from knowledge of the averages over "unconstrained" families.

Abstract:We present a complete and practical algorithm which can determine the number of distinct real solutions of a given polynomial system of equations and inequalities with integer coefficients mechanically. Based on this algorithm, a program called nearsolve has been implemented in Maple. The algorithm and program have been successfully applied to many problems with various backgrounds and to automated discovering and proving for inequality-type theorems.

Abstract:In this paper we establish the function field analogue of Bateman-Horn conjecture in short interval in the limit of a large finite field. Hence we start with counting prime polynomials generated by primitive quadratic functions in short intervals. To this end we further work out on function field analogs of cancellation of Mobius sums and its correlations(Chowla type sums) and confirm that square root cancellation in Mobius sums is equivalent to square root cancellation in Chowla type sums.

Abstract:In this article, we combine Bhargava's geometry-of-numbers methods with the dynamical point-counting methods of Eskin--McMullen and Benoist--Oh to develop a new technique for counting integral points on symmetric varieties lying within fundamental domains for coregular representations. As applications, we study the distribution of the $2$-torsion subgroup of the class group in thin families of cubic number fields, as well as the distribution of the $2$-Selmer groups in thin families of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$. For example, our results suggest that the existence of a generator of the ring of integers with small norm has an increasing effect on the average size of the $2$-torsion subgroup of the class group, relative to the Cohen--Lenstra predictions.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime, let $s \geq 3$ be a natural number and let $A \subseteq \mathbb{F}_p$ be a non-empty set satisfying $|A| \ll p^{1/2}$. Denoting $J_s(A)$ to be the number of solutions to the system of equations \[ \sum_{i=1}^{s} (x_i - x_{i+s}) = \sum_{i=1}^{s} (x_i^2 - x_{i+s}^2) = 0, \] with $x_1, \dots, x_{2s} \in A$, our main result implies that \[ J_s(A) \ll |A|^{2s - 2 - 1/9}. \] This can be seen as a finite field analogue of the quadratic Vinogradov mean value theorem. Our techniques involve a variety of combinatorial geometric estimates, including studying incidences between cartesian products $A\times A$ and a special family of modular hyperbolae.

Abstract:A $\textit{square-full}$ number is a positive integer for which all its prime divisors divide itself at least twice. The counting function of square-full integers of the form $f(n)$ for $n\leqslant N$ is denoted by $S^{{\mathstrut\hspace{0.05em}\blacksquare}}_f(N)$. We have known that for a relatively prime pair $(a,b)\in\mathbb N\times \mathbb N\cup\{0\}$ with a linear polynomial $f(x)=ax+b$, its counting function is $\asymp_{a,b} N^\frac{1}{2}$. Fix $\varepsilon>0$, for an admissible quadratic polynomial $f(x)$, we prove that $$S^{{\mathstrut\hspace{0.05em}\blacksquare}}_f(N)\ll_{\varepsilon, f} N^{\varpi+\varepsilon}$$ for some absolute constant $\varpi<1/2$. Under the assumption on the $abc$ conjecture, we expect the upper bound to be $O_{\varepsilon,f}(N^\varepsilon)$.

Abstract:We prove asymptotic formulae for small weighted solutions of quadratic congruences of the form $\lambda_1x_1^2+\cdots +\lambda_nx_n^2\equiv \lambda_{n+1}\bmod{p^m}$, where $p$ is a fixed odd prime, $\lambda_1,...,\lambda_{n+1}$ are integer coefficients such that $(\lambda_1\cdots \lambda _{n},p)=1$ and $m\rightarrow \infty$. If $n\ge 6$, $p\ge 5$ and the coefficients are fixed and satisfy $\lambda_1,...,\lambda_n>0$ and $(\lambda_{n+1},p)=1$ (inhomogeneous case), we obtain an asymptotic formula which is valid for integral solutions $(x_1,...,x_n)$ in cubes of side length at least $p^{(1/2+\varepsilon)m}$, centered at the origin. If $n\ge 4$ and $\lambda_{n+1}=0$ (homogeneous case), we prove a result of the same strength for coefficients $\lambda_i$ which are allowed to vary with $m$. These results extend previous results of the first- and the third-named authors and N. Bag.

Abstract:The so-called polynomial equations play an important role both in algebra and in the theory of functional equations. If the unknown functions in the equation are additive, relatively many results are known. However, even in this case, there are a lot of open questions. In some specific cases, according to classical results, the unknown additive functions are homomorphisms, derivations, or linear combinations of these. The question arises as to whether the solutions can be described even if the unknown functions are not assumed to be additive but to be generalized monomials. As a starting point, we will deal with quadratic functions in this paper. We aim to show that quadratic functions that are solutions to certain polynomial equations necessarily have a `special' form. Further, we also present a method to determine these special forms.

Abstract:We present a method for the solution of polynomial equations. We do not intend to present one more method among several others, because today there are many excellent methods. Our main aim is educational. Here we attempt to present a method with elementary tools in order to be understood and useful by students and educators. For this reason, we provide a self contained approach. Our method is a variation of the well known method of resultant, that has its origin back to Euler. Our goal, in the present paper, is in the spirit of calculus and secondary school mathematics. Abstract:We study the probability distribution of the number of common zeros of a system of $m$ random $n$-variate polynomials over a finite commutative ring $R$. We compute the expected number of common zeros of a system of polynomials over $R$. Then, in the case that $R$ is a field, under a necessary-and-sufficient condition on the sample space, we show that the number of common zeros is binomially distributed.

Abstract:We consider the problem of determining the maximum number of common zeros in a projective space over a finite field for a system of linearly independent multivariate homogeneous polynomials defined over that field. There is an elaborate conjecture of Tsfasman and Boguslavsky that predicts the maximum value when the homogeneous polynomials have the same degree that is not too large in comparison to the size of the finite field. We show that this conjecture holds in the affirmative if the number of polynomials does not exceed the total number of variables. This extends the results of Serre (1991) and Boguslavsky (1997) for the case of one and two polynomials, respectively. Moreover, it complements our recent result that the conjecture is false, in general, if the number of polynomials exceeds the total number of variables.

Abstract:Strömbergsson and Venkatesh proved that a system of homogeneous linear congruence modulo prime has a positive probability to have a short non-trivial solution. We extend this result and show that the same holds for square-free moduli. In the case of 2-variables single linear congruence, we show that there is a positive probability to have a short solution for all integer moduli as well as positive probability for having short non-trivial solutions which are primitive in a suitable sense.

Abstract:We prove a Poisson summation formula for the zero locus of a quadratic form in an even number of variables with no assumption on the support of the functions involved. The key novelty in the formula is that all ``boundary terms'' are given either by constants or sums over smaller quadrics related to the original quadric. We also discuss the link with the classical problem of estimating the number of solutions of a quadratic form in an even number of variables. To prove the summation formula we compute (the Arthur truncated) theta lift of the trivial representation of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{A}_F)$. As previously observed by Ginzburg, Rallis, and Soudry, this is an analogue for orthogonal groups on vector spaces of even dimension of the global Schrödinger representation of the metaplectic group. In the appendix the results of the paper are related to previous work on Eisenstein series and Poisson summation formulae for Braverman-Kazhdan spaces.

Abstract:The equidistribution of roots of quadratic congruences with prime moduli depends crucially upon effective bounds for special Weyl linear forms. Duke, Friedlander and Iwaniec discovered strong estimates for these Weyl linear forms when the quadratic polynomial has negative discriminant. Tóth proved analogous but weaker bounds when the quadratic polynomial has positive discriminant. We establish strong estimates for these Weyl linear forms for quadratics of positive discriminants. As an application of our bounds, we derive a quantitative uniform distribution of modular square roots with integer moduli in an arithmetic progression.

We consider the equation $( \star )$: $f(x) = b y^m$ in $x,y \in O_S$. Under the well-known LeVeque condition, we give fully explicit upper bounds in terms of $K, S, f, m$ and the $S$-norm of $b$ for the heights of the solutions $x$ of the equation $( \star)$. Further, we give an explicit bound $C$ in terms of $K, S, f$ and the $S$-norm of $b$ such that if $m > C$ the equation $(\star)$ has only solutions with $y = 0$ or a root of unity. Our results are more detailed versions of work of Trelina, Brindza, Shorey and Tijdeman, Voutier and Bugeaud, and extend earlier results of Bérczes, Evertse, and Győry to polynomials with multiple roots. In contrast with the previous results, our bounds depend on the $S$-norm of $b$ instead of its height.
