Abstract:We develop a version of the Kloosterman circle method with a bump function that is used to provide asymptotics for weighted representation numbers of nonsingular integral quadratic forms. Unlike many applications of the Kloosterman circle method, we explicitly state some constants in the error terms that depend on the quadratic form. This version of the Kloosterman circle method uses Gauss sums, Kloosterman sums, Salié sums, and a principle of nonstationary phase. We briefly discuss a potential application of this version of the Kloosterman circle method to a proof of a strong asymptotic local-global principle for certain Kleinian sphere packings.

Abstract:In this article we show that the form $x^2 + iy^2 + z^2 + iw^2$ represents all gaussian integers. The main tools used in this proof are Fermat's little theorem (over finite field extensions), the Mordell-Niven theorem (representation of some gaussians), and the generalized Euler-identity over finite field extensions.

Abstract:We (re)introduce the circle method into arithmetic statistics. More specifically, we combine the circle method with Bhargava's counting technique in order to give a general method that allows one to treat arithmetic statistical problems in which one is trying to count orbits on a subvariety of affine space defined by the vanishing of a quadratic invariant. We explain this method by way of example by computing the average size of $2$-Selmer groups in the families $y^2 = x^3 + B$ and $y^2 = x^3 + B^2$. In the course of the argument we introduce a smoothed form of Bhargava's aforementioned method, as well as a trick with which we formally deduce that the above averages are $3$ from knowledge of the averages over "unconstrained" families.

Abstract:Let $S \subseteq \mathbb{N}$ be finite. Is there a positive definite quadratic form that fails to represent only those elements in $S$? For $S = \emptyset$, this was solved (for classically integral forms) by the $15$-Theorem of Conway-Schneeberger in the early 1990s and (for all integral forms) by the $290$-Theorem of Bhargava-Hanke in the mid-2000s. In 1938 Halmos attempted to list all weighted sums of four squares that failed to represent $S=\{m\}$; of his $88$ candidates, he could provide complete justifications for all but one. In the same spirit, we ask, "for which $S = \{m, n\}$ does there exist a quadratic form excepting only the elements of $S$?" Extending the techniques of Bhargava and Hanke, we answer this question for quaternary forms. In the process, we prove what Halmos could not; namely, that $x^2+2y^2+7z^2+13w^2$ represents all positive integers except $5$. We develop new strategies to handle forms of higher dimensions, yielding an enumeration of and proofs for the $73$ possible pairs that a classically integral positive definite quadratic form may except.

Abstract:We count integral quaternion zeros of $\gamma_1^2 \pm \dots \pm \gamma_n^2$, giving an asymptotic when $n\ge 9$, and a likely near-optimal bound when $n=8$. To do so, we introduce a new, nonabelian delta symbol method, which is of independent interest. Our asymptotic at height $X$ takes the form $cX^{4n-8} + O(X^{3n+\varepsilon})$ for suitable $c \in \mathbb{C}$ and any $\varepsilon>0.$ We construct special subvarieties implying that, in general, $3n+\varepsilon$ can be at best improved to $3n-2.$

Abstract:Let m be a positive integer satisfying m equivalent to 1 (mod 4) and (m/7) = 1. Then there exist integers x, y, epsilon Z such that m = x(2) + 7y(2) + 49z(2). Recent work of J. Coates, Y. Li, Y. Tian and S. Zhai ([1]) shows that this conclusion is useful in the study of the arithmetic of elliptic curves. The above m can be represented also by either x2 + 14y2 + 28z2 + 14yz or 2x(2) + 4y(2) + 49z(2) + 2xy. Moreover, if m = 1 (mod 8) and (m/7) = 1, then m can be represented by x(2) + 14y(2) + 28z(2) + 14yz. The same is true for 2x(2) + 4y(2) + 49z(2) + 2xy, provided that m is not square. If we assume further that m = 1 (mod 4) with (m/7) = 1 is not square, then m can be represented by 8x(2) + 8y(2) + 9z(2) + 8yz + 8xz + 2xy and 2x(2) + 7y(2) + 25z(2) + 2xz. Note that the genus of x(2) + 7y(2) + 49z(2) consists of exactly the above appeared five ternary quadratic forms.
A motivic circle method

Abstract:The circle method has been successfully used over the last century to study rational points on hypersurfaces. More recently, a version of the method over function fields, combined with spreading out techniques, has led to a range of results about moduli spaces of rational curves on hypersurfaces. In this paper a version of the circle method is implemented in the setting of the Grothendieck ring of varieties. This allows us to approximate the classes of these moduli spaces directly, without relying on point counting, and leads to a deeper understanding of their geometry.

Abstract:Let $f(t_1,\ldots,t_n)$ be a nondegenerate integral quadratic form. We analyze the asymptotic behavior of the function $D_f(X)$, the number of integers of absolute value up to $X$ represented by $f$. When $f$ is isotropic or $n$ is at least $3$, we show that there is a $\delta(f) \in \mathbb{Q} \cap (0,1)$ such that $D_f(X) \sim \delta(f) X$ and call $\delta(f)$ the density of $f$. We consider the inverse problem of which densities arise. Our main technical tool is a Near Hasse Principle: a quadratic form may fail to represent infinitely many integers that it locally represents, but this set of exceptions has density $0$ within the set of locally represented integers.

Abstract:The classical quadratic Gauss sum can be thought of as an exponential sum attached to a quadratic form on a cyclic group. We introduce an equivariant version of Gauss sum for arbitrary finite quadratic forms, which is an exponential sum twisted by the action of the orthogonal group. We prove that simple arithmetic formulae hold for some basic classes of quadratic forms. In application, such invariant appears in the dimension formula for certain vector-valued modular forms.

Abstract:We prove a Poisson summation formula for the zero locus of a quadratic form in an even number of variables with no assumption on the support of the functions involved. The key novelty in the formula is that all ``boundary terms'' are given either by constants or sums over smaller quadrics related to the original quadric. We also discuss the link with the classical problem of estimating the number of solutions of a quadratic form in an even number of variables. To prove the summation formula we compute (the Arthur truncated) theta lift of the trivial representation of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{A}_F)$. As previously observed by Ginzburg, Rallis, and Soudry, this is an analogue for orthogonal groups on vector spaces of even dimension of the global Schrödinger representation of the metaplectic group. In the appendix the results of the paper are related to previous work on Eisenstein series and Poisson summation formulae for Braverman-Kazhdan spaces.

A minimalist version of the circle method and Diophantine problems over thin sets

Abstract:This paper studies the minimal conditions under which we can establish asymptotic formulae for Waring's problem and other additive problems that may be tackled by the circle method. We confirm in quantitative terms the well-known heuristic that a mean value estimate and an estimate of Weyl type, together with suitable distribution properties of the underlying set over a set of admissible residue classes, are sufficient to implement the circle method. This allows us to give a rather general proof of Waring's problem which is applicable to a range of sufficiently well-behaved thin sets, such as the ellipsephic sets recently investigated by the first author.

Abstract:Let $-d$ be a a negative discriminant and let $T$ vary over a set of representatives of the integral equivalence classes of integral binary quadratic forms of discriminant $-d$. We prove an asymptotic formula for $d \to \infty$ for the average over $T$ of the number of representations of $T$ by an integral positive definite quaternary quadratic form and obtain results on averages of Fourier coefficients of linear combinations of Siegel theta series. We also find an asymptotic bound from below on the number of binary forms of fixed discriminant $-d$ which are represented by a given quaternary form. In particular, we can show that for growing $d$ a positive proportion of the binary quadratic forms of discriminant $-d$ is represented by the given quaternary quadratic form.

Abstract:Over 200 years ago, Gauss discovered a composition law on the $SL_2({\mathbb Z})$-equivalence classes of primitive binary quadratic forms. Since then, bijections of classes of binary forms have been found with ideal class groups of quadratic rings. This paper uses one such bijection given by Bhargava, relating classes of projective binary cubic forms to the $3$-torsion of an ideal class group, to find an explicit form for a cubic analogue of Gaussian composition.

Abstract:We study cliques in graphs arising from quadratic forms where the vertices are the elements of the module of the quadratic form and two vertices are adjacent if their difference represents some fixed scalar. We determine structural properties and the clique number for quadratic forms over finite rings. We further extend previous results about graphs arising from such forms and forms over fields of characteristic 0 in a unified framework.

Abstract:Let $Q$ be a positive-definite quaternary quadratic form with prime discriminant. We give an explicit lower bound on the number of representations of a positive integer $n$ by $Q$. This problem is connected with deriving an upper bound on the Petersson norm $\langle C, C \rangle$ of the cuspidal part of the theta series of $Q$. We derive an upper bound on $\langle C, C \rangle$ that depends on the smallest positive integer not represented by the dual form $Q^{*}$. In addition, we give a non-trivial upper bound on the sum of the integers $n$ excepted by $Q$.

Abstract:We investigate generalized quadratic forms with values in the set of rational integers over quadratic fields. We characterize the real quadratic fields which admit a positive definite binary generalized form of this type representing every positive integer. We also show that there are only finitely many such fields where a ternary generalized form with these properties exists.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a non-degenerate integral ternary quadratic form and let $m_0\in\mathbb{Z}_{\neq 0}$. We study growth of rational points on the affine quadric $(F=m_0)$ and show that they are equidistributed in the adelic space off a finite place. This is closely related to Linnik's problem. Our approach is based on the $\delta$-variant of the Hardy--Littlewood circle method developed by Heath-Brown.
