Abstract:In this paper I survey the sources of inspiration for my own and co-authored work in trying to develop a general theory of graph polynomials. I concentrate on meta-theorems, i.e., theorem which depend only on the form infinite classes of graph polynomials are defined in some formalism, and not on the actual meaning of the particular definitions.

Abstract:Tractability results for the model checking problem of logics yield powerful algorithmic meta theorems of the form: Every computational problem expressible in a logic $L$ can be solved efficiently on every class $\mathscr{C}$ of structures satisfying certain conditions. The most prominent logics studied in the field are (counting) monadic second-order logic (C)MSO, and first-order logic FO and its extensions. The complexity of CMSO model checking in general and of FO model checking on monotone graph classes is very well understood. In recent years there has been a rapid and exciting development of new algorithmic meta theorems. On the one hand there has been major progress for FO model checking on hereditary graph classes. This progress was driven by the development of a combinatorial structure theory for the logically defined monadically stable and monadically dependent graph classes, as well as by the advent of the new width measure twinwidth. On the other hand, new algorithmic meta theorems for new logics with expressive power between FO and CMSO offer a new unifying view on methods like the irrelevant vertex technique and recursive understanding. In this paper we overview the recent advances in algorithmic meta theorems and provide rough sketches for the methods to prove them.

Abstract:Many graph polynomials, such as the Tutte polynomial, the interlace polynomial and the matching polynomial, have both a recursive definition and a defining subset expansion formula. In this paper we present a general, logic-based framework which gives a precise meaning to recursive definitions of graph polynomials. We then prove that in this framework every recursive definition of a graph polynomial can be converted into a subset expansion formula.

An Algorithmic Meta-Theorem for Graph Modification to Planarity and FOL

Abstract:In general, a graph modification problem is defined by a graph modification operation $\boxtimes$ and a target graph property ${\cal P}$. Typically, the modification operation $\boxtimes$ may be vertex removal}, edge removal}, edge contraction}, or edge addition and the question is, given a graph $G$ and an integer $k$, whether it is possible to transform $G$ to a graph in ${\cal P}$ after applying $k$ times the operation $\boxtimes$ on $G$. This problem has been extensively studied for particilar instantiations of $\boxtimes$ and ${\cal P}$. In this paper we consider the general property ${\cal P}_{\phi}$ of being planar and, moreover, being a model of some First-Order Logic sentence ${\phi}$ (an FOL-sentence). We call the corresponding meta-problem Graph $\boxtimes$-Modification to Planarity and ${\phi}$ and prove the following algorithmic meta-theorem: there exists a function $f:\Bbb{N}^{2}\to\Bbb{N}$ such that, for every $\boxtimes$ and every FOL sentence ${\phi}$, the Graph $\boxtimes$-Modification to Planarity and ${\phi}$ is solvable in $f(k,|{\phi}|)\cdot n^2$ time. The proof constitutes a hybrid of two different classic techniques in graph algorithms. The first is the irrelevant vertex technique that is typically used in the context of Graph Minors and deals with properties such as planarity or surface-embeddability (that are not FOL-expressible) and the second is the use of Gaifman's Locality Theorem that is the theoretical base for the meta-algorithmic study of FOL-expressible problems.

Abstract:Distributed certification, whether it be proof-labeling schemes, locally checkable proofs, etc., deals with the issue of certifying the legality of a distributed system with respect to a given boolean predicate. A certificate is assigned to each process in the system by a non-trustable oracle, and the processes are in charge of verifying these certificates, so that two properties are satisfied: completeness, i.e., for every legal instance, there is a certificate assignment leading all processes to accept, and soundness, i.e., for every illegal instance, and for every certificate assignment, at least one process rejects. The verification of the certificates must be fast, and the certificates themselves must be small. A large quantity of results have been produced in this framework, each aiming at designing a distributed certification mechanism for specific boolean predicates. This paper presents a "meta-theorem", applying to many boolean predicates at once. Specifically, we prove that, for every boolean predicate on graphs definable in the monadic second-order (MSO) logic of graphs, there exists a distributed certification mechanism using certificates on $O(\log^2n)$ bits in $n$-node graphs of bounded treewidth, with a verification protocol involving a single round of communication between neighbors.

Graph polynomials: some questions on the edge

Abstract:We raise some questions about graph polynomials, highlighting concepts and phenomena that may merit consideration in the development of a general theory. Our questions are mainly of three types: When do graph polynomials have reduction relations (simple linear recursions based on local operations), perhaps in a wider class of combinatorial objects? How many levels of reduction relations does a graph polynomial need in order to express it in terms of trivial base cases? For a graph polynomial, how are properties such as equivalence and factorisation reflected in the structure of a graph? We illustrate our discussion with a variety of graph polynomials and other invariants. This leads us to reflect on the historical origins of graph polynomials. We also introduce some new polynomials based on partial colourings of graphs and establish some of their basic properties.

Abstract:These notes are designed to offer some (perhaps new) codicils to related work, a list of problems and conjectures seeking (preferably) combinatorial proofs. The main items are Eulerian polynomials and hook/contents of Young diagram, mostly on the latter. We also have items on Frobenius theorem and multi-core partitions; most recently, some problems on (what we call) colored over-partitions. Formulas analogues to or in the spirit of works by Han, Nekrasov-Okounkov and Stanley are distributed throughout. Concluding remarks are provided at the end in hopes of directing the interested researcher, properly. The newly added problem is on chromatic polynomials

Abstract:In this paper, we will show dichotomy theorems for the computation of polynomials corresponding to evaluation of graph homomorphisms in Valiant's model. We are given a fixed graph $H$ and want to find all graphs, from some graph class, homomorphic to this $H$. These graphs will be encoded by a family of polynomials. We give dichotomies for the polynomials for cycles, cliques, trees, outerplanar graphs, planar graphs and graphs of bounded genus.

Fine-grained Meta-Theorems for Vertex Integrity

Abstract:Vertex Integrity is a graph measure which sits squarely between two more well-studied notions, namely vertex cover and tree-depth, and that has recently gained attention as a structural graph parameter. In this paper we investigate the algorithmic trade-offs involved with this parameter from the point of view of algorithmic meta-theorems for First-Order (FO) and Monadic Second Order (MSO) logic. Our positive results are the following: (i) given a graph $G$ of vertex integrity $k$ and an FO formula $\phi$ with $q$ quantifiers, deciding if $G$ satisfies $\phi$ can be done in time $2^{O(k^2q+q\log q)}+n^{O(1)}$; (ii) for MSO formulas with $q$ quantifiers, the same can be done in time $2^{2^{O(k^2+kq)}}+n^{O(1)}$. Both results are obtained using kernelization arguments, which pre-process the input to sizes $2^{O(k^2)}q$ and $2^{O(k^2+kq)}$ respectively. The complexities of our meta-theorems are significantly better than the corresponding meta-theorems for tree-depth, which involve towers of exponentials. However, they are worse than the roughly $2^{O(kq)}$ and $2^{2^{O(k+q)}}$ complexities known for corresponding meta-theorems for vertex cover. To explain this deterioration we present two formula constructions which lead to fine-grained complexity lower bounds and establish that the dependence of our meta-theorems on $k$ is the best possible. More precisely, we show that it is not possible to decide FO formulas with $q$ quantifiers in time $2^{o(k^2q)}$, and that there exists a constant-size MSO formula which cannot be decided in time $2^{2^{o(k^2)}}$, both under the ETH. Hence, the quadratic blow-up in the dependence on $k$ is unavoidable and vertex integrity has a complexity for FO and MSO logic which is truly intermediate between vertex cover and tree-depth.

Abstract:We give combinatorial criteria for predicting the transcendental weight of Feynman integrals of certain graphs in $\phi^4$ theory. By studying spanning forest polynomials, we obtain operations on graphs which are weight-preserving, and a list of subgraphs which induce a drop in the transcendental weight.

Abstract:We prove that in the algebraic metacomplexity framework, the decomposition of metapolynomials into their isotypic components can be implemented efficiently, namely with only a quasipolynomial blowup in the circuit size. This means that many existing algebraic complexity lower bound proofs can be efficiently converted into isotypic lower bound proofs via highest weight metapolynomials, a notion studied in geometric complexity theory. In the context of algebraic natural proofs, our result means that without loss of generality algebraic natural proofs can be assumed to be isotypic. Our proof is built on the Poincaré--Birkhoff--Witt theorem for Lie algebras and on Gelfand--Tsetlin theory, for which we give the necessary comprehensive background.

Abstract:A theory graph is a network of axiomatic theories connected with meaning-preserving mappings called theory morphisms. Theory graphs are well suited for organizing large bodies of mathematical knowledge. Traditional and formal proofs do not adequately fulfill all the purposes that mathematical proofs have, and they do not exploit the structure inherent in a theory graph. We propose a new style of proof that fulfills the principal purposes of a mathematical proof as well as capitalizes on the connections provided by the theory morphisms in a theory graph. This new style of proof combines the strengths of traditional proofs with the strengths of formal proofs.

Abstract:Graph polynomials are polynomials assigned to graphs. Interestingly, they also arise in many areas outside graph theory as well. Many properties of graph polynomials have been widely studied. In this paper, we survey some results on the derivative and real roots of graph polynomials, which have applications in chemistry, control theory and computer science. Related to the derivatives of graph polynomials, polynomial reconstruction of the matching polynomial is also introduced.
A proof-theoretic metatheorem for nonlinear semigroups generated by an accretive operator and applications

Abstract:We further develop the theoretical framework of proof mining, a program in mathematical logic that seeks to quantify and extract computational information from prima facie `non-computational' proofs from the mainstream literature. To that end, we establish logical metatheorems that allow for the treatment of proofs involving nonlinear semigroups generated by an accretive operator, structures which in particular arise in the study of the solutions and asymptotic behavior of partial differential equations. In that way, the here established metatheorems facilitate a theoretical basis for the application of methods from the proof mining program to the wide variety of mathematical results established in the context of that theory since the 1960's. We in particular illustrate the applicability of the new systems and their metatheorems introduced here by providing two case studies on two central results due to Reich and Plant, respectively, on the asymptotic behavior of said semigroups and the resolvents of their generators where we derive rates of convergence for the limits involved which are, moreover, polynomial in all data.

Analogs of Brooks' Theorem for coloring parameters of infinite graphs and Konig's Lemma

Abstract:In the past, analogies to Brooks' theorem have been found for various parameters of graph coloring for infinite locally finite connected graphs in ZFC. We prove these theorems are not provable in ZF (i.e. the Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory without the Axiom of Choice (AC)). Moreover, such theorems follow from Konig's Lemma (every infinite locally finite connected graph has a ray-a weak form of AC) in ZF. In ZF, we formulate new conditions for the existence of the distinguishing chromatic number, the distinguishing chromatic index, the total chromatic number, the total distinguishing chromatic number, the odd chromatic number, and the neighbor-distinguishing index in infinite locally finite connected graphs, which are equivalent to Konig's Lemma. In this direction, we strengthen a recent result of Stawiski from 2023.

Abstract:Magic labelings of graphs are studied in great detail by Stanley and Stewart. In this article, we construct and enumerate magic labelings of graphs using Hilbert bases of polyhedral cones and Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of polytopes. We define polytopes of magic labelings of graphs and digraphs. We give a description of the faces of the Birkhoff polytope as polytopes of magic labelings of digraphs.

Abstract:A graph operator is a function $\Gamma$ defined on some set of graphs such that whenever two graphs $G$ and $H$ are isomorphic, written $G\simeq H$, then $\Gamma(G)\simeq \Gamma(H)$. For a graph $G$ not in the domain of $\Gamma$, we put $\Gamma(G)=\emptyset$. Also, let us define $\Gamma^0(G)=G$, and for any integr $k\ge1$, $\Gamma^k(G)=\Gamma(\Gamma^{k-1}(G))$ We prove that if $\Gamma$ is a graph operator, then the sequence $\langle \Gamma^k(G)\rangle_{k=0}^\infty$ has only three possible types of behaviour. Either $\Gamma^k(G)=\emptyset$ for some integer $k>0$, or $\displaystyle\lim_{k\to\infty}|V(\Gamma^k(G))|=\infty$, or there exist integers $m\ge0$, $p>0$ such that the graphs $\Gamma^j(G)$ are non-isomorphic ($0\le j\le m)$, and $\Gamma^{n+p}\simeq \Gamma ^n(G)$ for all integers $n\ge m$. We illustrate this using two new graph operators, namely, the path graph operator and the claw graph operator.

Variations on a Theme of Makowski

Abstract:We distinguish the axiomatic study of proofs in geometry from study about geometry from general axioms for mathematics. We briefly report on an abuse of that distinction and its unfortunate effect on US high school education. We review a number of 20th century approaches to synthetic geometry. In doing so, we disambiguate (in the Wikipedia sense) the terms: metric, orthogonal, isotropic and hyperbolic. With some of these systems we are able to axiomatize `affine geometry' over the complex field (The argument is trivial from [Wu94] or [Szm78], but not remarked by either of them.). We examine the general question of the connections between axioms for Affine geometries and the stability classification of associated complete first order theories of fields. We conclude with reminiscences of a half-century friendship with Janós.

Abstract:Graph Theory is still a relatively young subject, and debate still rages on what material constitutes the core results that any introductory text should include. Bollobás has chosen to introduce graph theory - including recent results - in a way that emphasizes the connections between (for example) the Tutte polynomial of a graph, the partition functions of theoretical physics, and the new knot polynomials, all of which are interconnected.On the other hand, graph theory is also rooted strongly in computing science, where it is applied to many different problems; Bollobás's treatment is completely theoretical and does not address these applications. Or, in more practical terms, he is concerned whether a solution exists, rather than asking whether the solution can be computed in a reasonably efficient manner.One of the pleasures of working in graph theory is the abundance of problems available to solve. Unlike many more traditional areas of Mathematics, knowing the core results and proofs is frequently insufficient. Often solving a new problem requires a new approach, or a subtle twist on an existing one, combined with some bare knuckle work. Bollobás emphasizes this in the problems available at the end of each chapter; he includes in total 639 problems, ranging from the reasonably straightforward to the very difficult. I spent time with friends working on these problems, and was intrigued by the variety of the proofs that we came up with.
