Abstract:The graph minor structure theorem by Robertson and Seymour shows that every graph that excludes a fixed minor can be constructed by a combination of four ingredients: graphs embedded in a surface of bounded genus, a bounded number of vortices of bounded width, a bounded number of apex vertices, and the clique-sum operation. This paper studies the converse question: What is the maximum order of a complete graph minor in a graph constructed using these four ingredients? Our main result answers this question up to a constant factor.

Abstract:In this paper we study the algebra of graph invariants, focusing mainly on the invariants of simple graphs. All other invariants, such as sorted eigenvalues, degree sequences and canonical permutations, belong to this algebra. In fact, every graph invariant is a linear combination of the basic graph invariants which we study in this paper. To prove that two graphs are isomorphic, a number of basic invariants are required, which are called separator invariants. The minimal set of separator invariants is also the minimal basic generator set for the algebra of graph invariants. We find lower and upper bounds for the minimal number of generator/separator invariants needed for proving graph isomorphism. Finally we find a sufficient condition for Ulam's conjecture to be true based on Redfield's enumeration formula.

Abstract:We give a logical characterization of the polynomial-time properties of graphs with excluded minors: For every class C of graphs such that some graph H is not a minor of any graph in C , a property P of graphs in C is decidable in polynomial time if and only if it is definable in fixed-point logic with counting. Furthermore, we prove that for every class C of graphs with excluded minors there is a k such that a simple combinatorial algorithm, namely "the k -dimensional Weisfeiler--Lehman algorithm," decides isomorphism of graphs in C in polynomial time.

Abstract:We present problems and results that combine graph-minors and coarse geometry. For example, we ask whether every geodesic metric space (or graph) without a fat $H$ minor is quasi-isometric to a graph with no $H$ minor, for an arbitrary finite graph $H$. We answer this affirmatively for a few small $H$. We also present a metric analogue of Menger's theorem and Konig's ray theorem. We conjecture metric analogues of the Erdos--Posa Theorem and Halin's grid theorem.

Abstract:We study the extended root polytope associated to a directed graph. We show that under the operations of deletion and contraction of an edge of the digraph, none of the coefficients of the $h^*$-polynomial of its associated lattice polytope will increase.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of coarse bottlenecking in graphs and coarse skeletons of graphs and show how bottlenecking guarantees that a skeleton resembles (up to quasi-isometry) the original graph. We show how these tools can be used to simplify the structure of graphs upto quasi-isometry that have an excluded asymptotic minor, reducing it to a skeleton of the original containing no $3$-fat minor. We give an example to show that a similar result does not hold for $2$-fat minors. This makes progress towards a Conjecture posed by Georgakopoulos and Papasoglu.

Abstract:The Graph Minors Structure Theorem of Robertson and Seymour asserts that, for every graph $H,$ every $H$-minor-free graph can be obtained by clique-sums of ``almost embeddable'' graphs. Here a graph is ``almost embeddable'' if it can be obtained from a graph of bounded Euler-genus by pasting graphs of bounded pathwidth in an ``orderly fashion'' into a bounded number of faces, called the \textit{vortices}, and then adding a bounded number of additional vertices, called \textit{apices}, with arbitrary neighborhoods. Our main result is a {full classification} of all graphs $H$ for which the use of vortices in the theorem above can be avoided. To this end we identify a (parametric) graph $\mathscr{S}_{t}$ and prove that all $\mathscr{S}_{t}$-minor-free graphs can be obtained by clique-sums of graphs embeddable in a surface of bounded Euler-genus after deleting a bounded number of vertices. We show that this result is tight in the sense that the appearance of vortices cannot be avoided for $H$-minor-free graphs, whenever $H$ is not a minor of $\mathscr{S}_{t}$ for some $t\in\mathbb{N}.$ Using our new structure theorem, we design an algorithm that, given an $\mathscr{S}_{t}$-minor-free graph $G,$ computes the generating function of all perfect matchings of $G$ in polynomial time. Our results, combined with known complexity results, imply a complete characterization of minor-closed graph classes where the number of perfect matchings is polynomially computable: They are exactly those graph classes that do not contain every $\mathscr{S}_{t}$ as a minor. This provides a \textit{sharp} complexity dichotomy for the problem of counting perfect matchings in minor-closed classes.

Abstract:Graph inverse semigroups generalize the polycyclic inverse monoids and play an important role in the theory of C*-algebras. This paper has two main goals: first, to provide an abstract characterization of graph inverse semigroups; and second, to show how they may be completed, under suitable conditions, to form what we call the Cuntz-Krieger semigroup of the graph. This semigroup is the ample semigroup of a topological groupoid associated with the graph, and the semigroup analogue of the Leavitt path algebra of the graph.

On the Semigroup of Graph Gonality Sequences

Abstract:The $r$th gonality of a graph is the smallest degree of a divisor on the graph with rank $r$. The gonality sequence of a graph is a tropical analogue of the gonality sequence of an algebraic curve. We show that the set of truncated gonality sequences of graphs forms a semigroup under addition. Using this, we study which triples $(x,y,z)$ can be the first 3 terms of a graph gonality sequence. We show that nearly every such triple with $z \geq \frac{3}{2}x+2$ is the first three terms of a graph gonality sequence, and also exhibit triples where the ratio $\frac{z}{x}$ is an arbitrary rational number between 1 and 3. In the final section, we study algebraic curves whose $r$th and $(r+1)$st gonality differ by 1, and posit several questions about graphs with this property.

Finite models for positive combinatorial and exponential algebra

Abstract:We use high girth, high chromatic number hypergraphs to show that there are finite models of the equational theory of the semiring of nonnegative integers whose equational theory has no finite axiomatisation, and show this also holds if factorial, fixed base exponentiation and operations for binomial coefficients are adjoined. We also derive the decidability of the equational logical entailment operator $\vdash$ for antecedents true on $\mathbb{N}$ by way of a form of the finite model property. Two appendices contain additional basic development of combinatorial operations. Amongst the observations are an eventual dominance well-ordering of combinatorial functions and consequent representation of the ordinal $\epsilon_0$ in terms of factorial functions; the equivalence of the equational logic of combinatorial algebra over the natural numbers and over the positive reals; and a candidate list of elementary axioms.

Abstract:Freiman's theorem gives a lower bound for the cardinality of the doubling of a finite set in $\RR^n$. In this paper we give an interpretation of his theorem for monomial ideals and their fiber cones. We call a quasi-equigenerated monomial ideal a Freiman ideal, if the set of its exponent vectors achieves Freiman's lower bound for its doubling. Algebraic characterizations of Freiman ideals are given, and finite simple graphs are classified whose edge ideals or matroidal ideals of its cycle matroids are Freiman ideals.

Abstract:In recent work, the authors developed a simple method of constructing topological spaces from certain well-behaved partially ordered sets -- those coming from sequences of relations between finite sets. This method associates a given poset with its spectrum, which is a compact T_1 topological space. In this paper, we focus on the case where such finite sets have a graph structure and the relations belong to a given graph category. We relate topological properties of the spectrum to combinatorial properties of the graph categories involved. We then utilise this to exhibit elementary combinatorial constructions of well-known continua as Fraïssé limits of finite graphs in categories with relational morphisms.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 1, Page 566-589, March 2024. Modular decomposition focuses on repeatedly identifying a module [math] (a collection of vertices that shares exactly the same neighborhood outside of [math]) and collapsing it into a single vertex. This notion of exactitude of neighborhood is very strict, especially when dealing with real-world graphs. We study new ways to relax this exactitude condition. However, generalizing modular decomposition is far from obvious. Most of the previous proposals lose algebraic properties of modules and thus most of the nice algorithmic consequences. We introduce the notion of an [math]-module, a relaxation that maintains some of the algebraic structure. It leads to a new combinatorial decomposition with interesting properties. Among the main results in this work, we show that minimal [math]-modules can be computed in polynomial time, and we generalize series and parallel operation between graphs. This leads to [math]-cographs which have interesting properties. We study how to generalize Gallai's theorem corresponding to the case for [math], but unfortunately we give evidence that computing such a decomposition tree can be difficult.

On bounded ratios of minors of totally positive matrices

Abstract:We provide several examples of bounded Laurent monomials of minors of a totally positive matrix, which can not be factored into a product of so called primitive ratios, thus showing that the conjecture about factorization of bounded ratios stated in [3] by Fallat, Gekhtman, and Johnson does not hold. However, all found examples satisfy subtraction-free conjecture stated also in [3]. In addition, we show that the set of all bounded ratios form a polyhedral cone of dimension $\binom{2n}{n}-2n$.

Abstract:An infinite graph is quasi-transitive if its vertex set has finitely many orbits under the action of its automorphism group. In this paper we obtain a structure theorem for locally finite quasi-transitive graphs avoiding a minor, which is reminiscent of the Robertson-Seymour Graph Minor Structure Theorem. We prove that every locally finite quasi-transitive graph $G$ avoiding a minor has a tree-decomposition whose torsos are finite or planar; moreover the tree-decomposition is canonical, i.e. invariant under the action of the automorphism group of $G$. As applications of this result, we prove the following. * Every locally finite quasi-transitive graph attains its Hadwiger number, that is, if such a graph contains arbitrarily large clique minors, then it contains an infinite clique minor. This extends a result of Thomassen (1992) who proved it in the 4-connected case and suggested that this assumption could be omitted. * Locally finite quasi-transitive graphs avoiding a minor are accessible (in the sense of Thomassen and Woess), which extends known results on planar graphs to any proper minor-closed family. * Minor-excluded finitely generated groups are accessible (in the group-theoretic sense) and finitely presented, which extends classical results on planar groups. * The domino problem is decidable in a minor-excluded finitely generated group if and only if the group is virtually free, which proves the minor-excluded case of a conjecture of Ballier and Stein (2018).

Abstract:We study the number of connected graphs with $n$ vertices that cannot be written as the cartesian product of two graphs with fewer vertices. We give an upper bound which implies that for large $n$ almost all graphs are both connected and cartesian prime. For graphs with an even number of vertices, a full asymptotic expansion is obtained. Our method, inspired by Knopfmacher's theory of arithmetical semigroups, is based on reduction to Wright's asymptotic expansion for the number of connected graphs with $n$ vertices.

Super graphs on groups, II

Abstract:In an earlier paper, the authors considered three types of graphs, and three equivalence relations, defined on a group, viz.\ the power graph, enhanced power graph, and commuting graph, and the relations of equality, conjugacy, and same order; for each choice of a graph type A and an equivalence relation B, there is a graph, the \emph{B superA graph} defined on $G$. The resulting nine graphs (of which eight were shown to be in general distinct) form a two-dimensional hierarchy. In the present paper, we consider these graphs further. We prove universality properties for the conjugacy supergraphs of various types, adding the nilpotent, solvable and enhanced power graphs to the commuting graphs considered in the rest of the paper, and also examine their relation to the invariable generating graph of the group. We also show that supergraphs can be expressed as graph compositions, in the sense of Schwenk, and use this representation to calculate their Wiener index. We illustrate these by computing Wiener index of equality supercommuting and conjugacy supercommuting graphs for dihedral and quaternion groups.

Excluding Surfaces as Minors in Graphs

Abstract:We introduce an annotated extension of treewidth that measures the contribution of a vertex set $X$ to the treewidth of a graph $G.$ This notion provides a graph distance measure to some graph property $\mathcal{P}$: A vertex set $X$ is a $k$-treewidth modulator of $G$ to $\mathcal{P}$ if the treewidth of $X$ in $G$ is at most $k$ and its removal gives a graph in $\mathcal{P}.$This notion allows for a version of the Graph Minors Structure Theorem (GMST) that has no need for apices and vortices: $K_k$-minor free graphs are those that admit tree-decompositions whose torsos have $c_{k}$-treewidth modulators to some surface of Euler-genus $c_{k}.$ This reveals that minor-exclusion is essentially tree-decomposability to a ``modulator-target scheme'' where the modulator is measured by its treewidth and the target is surface embeddability. We then fix the target condition by demanding that $\Sigma$ is some particular surface and define a ``surface extension'' of treewidth, where $\Sigma\mbox{-}\mathsf{tw}(G)$ is the minimum $k$ for which $G$ admits a tree-decomposition whose torsos have a $k$-treewidth modulator to being embeddable in $\Sigma.$We identify a finite collection $\mathfrak{D}_{\Sigma}$ of parametric graphs and prove that the minor-exclusion of the graphs in $\mathfrak{D}_{\Sigma}$ precisely determines the asymptotic behavior of ${\Sigma}\mbox{-}\mathsf{tw},$ for every surface $\Sigma.$ It follows that the collection $\mathfrak{D}_{\Sigma}$ bijectively corresponds to the ``surface obstructions'' for $\Sigma,$ i.e., surfaces that are minimally non-contained in $\Sigma.$
