Abstract:Using a computationally inexpensive frozen phonon approach we have developed a technique which can be used to screen large unit cell materials and systems for enhanced superconducting critical temperatures. The method requires only density functional theory (DFT) calculated electronic band structures of phonon modes corresponding to atomic displacements for various materials. We have applied this method to well known conventional superconductors including MgB$_2$, H$_{3}$S and other hydrides as examples.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper presents a new method for computing electron-phonon coupling, aiming to efficiently screen high critical temperature superconducting materials. The current methods are computationally expensive and not suitable for large-scale screening. The frozen phonon method developed in the paper can predict the electron-phonon coupling strength (λ) of materials at a lower computational cost, and is applicable to systems with a large number of atoms, such as large unit cell crystal structures. This method improves upon previous frozen phonon techniques, allowing for more accurate estimation of λ and pre-screening of potential high-temperature superconducting materials.
