Abstract:We study the space of non-simple polarised abelian surfaces. Specifically, we describe for which pairs (m, n) the locus of polarised abelian surfaces of type (1, d) that contain two complementary elliptic curve of exponents m, n, denoted Ed(m,n)$$\mathcal {E}_d(m,n)$$ is non-empty. We show that if d is square-free, the locus Ed(m,n)$$\mathcal {E}_d(m,n)$$ is an irreducible surface (if non-empty). We also show that the loci Ed(d,d)$$\mathcal {E}_d(d,d)$$ can have many components if d is an odd square. As an application, we show that for a genus 3 curve with a completely decomposable Jacobian (i.e. isogenous to a product of 3 elliptic curves) the degrees of complementary coverings fi:C→Ei,i=1,2,3$$f_i:C\rightarrow E_i,\ i=1,2,3$$ satisfy lcm(deg(f1),deg(f2))=lcm(deg(f1),deg(f3))=lcm(deg(f2),deg(f3))$${{\,\textrm{lcm}\,}}(\deg (f_1),\deg (f_2))={{\,\textrm{lcm}\,}}(\deg (f_1),\deg (f_3))={{\,\textrm{lcm}\,}}(\deg (f_2),\deg (f_3))$$.

Simplicity of some Jacobians with many automorphisms

Abstract:We study an explicit $(2g-1)$-dimensional family of Jacobian varieties of dimension $\frac{d-1}2(g-1)$, arising from quotient curves of unramified cyclic coverings of prime degree $d$ of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g\ge 2$. By using a deformation argument, we prove that the generic element of the family is simple. Furthermore, we completely describe their endomorphism algebra, and we show that they admit a rank $\frac{d-1}2-1$ group of non-polarized automorphisms. As an application of these results, we prove the generic injectivity of the Prym map for étale cyclic coverings of hyperelliptic curves of odd prime degree under some slight numerical restrictions. This result generalizes in several directions previous results on genus 2.

Elliptic-elliptic surfaces and the Hesse pencil

Abstract:We construct a family of elliptic surfaces with $p_g=q=1$ that arise from base change of the Hesse pencil. We identify explicitly a component of the higher Noether-Lefschetz locus with positive Mordell-Weil rank, and a particular surface having maximal Picard number and defined over $\mathbb Q$. These examples satisfy the infinitesimal Torelli theorem, providing a second proof of the dominance of period map, which was first obtained by Engel-Greer-Ward. A third proof is provided using the Shioda modular surface associated with $\Gamma_0(11)$. Finally, we find birational models for the degenerations at the boundary of the one-dimensional Noether-Lefschetz locus, and extend the period map at those limit points.

This implies that for a Riemann surface of genus [Formula: see text], the mixed Hodge structure on the space of its positive, reduced divisors of degree [Formula: see text] does in general not split over [Formula: see text].
Generic injectivity of Hessian maps of ternary forms

Abstract:We prove that any planar projective curve of degree $d \ge 4$ and with a smooth Hessian curve $H_f$ is uniquely determined by $H_f$. Taking into account that the Hessian curve is the ramification divisor associated with the polar map, we prove the statement using a geometric description of the graph of such a map. It turns out that in degree $d\ge 4$ two curves have the same smooth Hessian if and only if they have the same Jacobian ideal. The latter curves have been classified by C. Mammana, and they all have a reducible, hence singular, Hessian curve. As a consequence, the Hessian map, associating with a proportionality class of a ternary form the class of its Hessian determinant, is injective on the open locus corresponding to curves with smooth Hessian curve. This confirms a conjecture posed by C. Ciliberto and G. Ottaviani.

Moduli of abelian varieties near the locus of products of elliptic curves

Abstract:We study various naturally defined subvarieties of the moduli space ${\mathcal A}_g$ of complex principally polarized abelian varieties (ppav) in a neighborhood of the locus of products of $g$ elliptic curves. In this neighborhood, we obtain a local description for the locus of hyperelliptic curves, reproving the recent result of Shepherd-Barron that the hyperelliptic locus is locally given by tridiagonal matrices. We further reprove and generalize to arbitrary genus the recent result of Agostini and Chua showing that the locus of Jacobians of genus 5 curves with a theta-null is an irreducible component of the locus of ppav with a theta-null such that the singular locus of the theta divisor at the corresponding two-torsion point has tangent cone of rank at most 3. We further show that the locus of ppav such that the gradient vanishes, for some odd theta characteristic, locally has codimension $g$ near the diagonal. Finally, we obtain new results on the locus where the rank of the Hessian of the theta function at a two-torsion point that lies on the theta divisor is equal to 2.

Abstract:Determining the limiting behaviour of the Jacobian as the underlying curve degenerates has been the subject of much interest. For nodal singularities, there are beautiful constructions of Caporaso as well as Pandharipande of compactified universal Jacobians over the moduli space of stable curves. Alexeev later obtained a canonical such compactification by extending the Torelli map out of the Deligne-Mumford compactification of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$. In contrast, Alexeev and Brunyate proved that the Torelli map does not extend over the cuspidal locus in Schubert's alternative compactification of pseudostable curves.

Rational torsion on hyperelliptic jacobian varieties

Abstract:Fixing an integer $g\ge 2$, it was conjectured by Flynn that there exists a constant $\kappa$, independent of $g$, such that for every $m \le \kappa g$, there exists a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ over $\Q$ with a rational $m$-torsion point on its Jacobian. Leprévost proved this conjecture with $\kappa=3$. In this work we prove that given an integer $N$ in the interval $[3g,4g+1]$, $g\ge 3$, satisfying certain partition conditions, there exist infinite families of hyperelliptic Jacobian varieties with a rational torsion point of order $N$. In particular, we establish the existence of such varieties for $N=4g+1$ when $g$ is odd and for $N=4g-1$ when $g$ is even. A few explicit applications of this result produce the first known infinite examples of torsion $13$ when $g=3$, torsion $15$ when $g=4$, and torsion $17,18,21$ when $g=5$. In fact, we show that infinitely many of the latter abelian varieties are absolutely simple.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth Fano variety. We attach a bi-graded associative algebra $\mathrm{HS}(\mathcal{K}u(X))=\bigoplus_{i,j\in \mathbb{Z}} \mathrm{Hom}(\mathrm{Id},S_{\mathcal{K}u(X)}^{i}[j])$ to the Kuznetsov component $\mathcal{K}u(X)$ whenever it is defined. Then we construct a natural sub-algebra of $\mathrm{HS}(\mathcal{K}u(X))$ when $X$ is a Fano hypersurface and establish its relation with Jacobian ring $\mathrm{Jac}(X)$. As an application, we prove a categorical Torelli theorem for Fano hypersurface $X\subset\mathbb{P}^n(n\geq 2)$ of degree $d$ if $\mathrm{gcd}(n+1,d)=1.$ In addition, we give a new proof of the $[Pir22, Theorem 1.2]$ using a similar idea.

Abstract:In the paper we consider the Jacobian locus $\overline{J_g}$ and the Prym locus $\overline{P_{g+1}}$, in the moduli space $A_g$ of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$, for $g\geq 7$, and we study the extrinsic geometry of $\overline{J_g}\subset \overline{P_{g+1}}$, under the inclusion provided by the theory of generalized Prym varieties as introduced by Beauville. More precisely, we study certain geodesic curves with respect to the Siegel metric of $A_g$, starting at a Jacobian variety $[JC]\in A_g$ of a curve $[C]\in M_g$ and with direction $\zeta\in T_{[JC]}J_g$. We prove that for a general $JC$, any geodesic of this kind is not contained in $\overline{J_g}$ and even in $\overline{P_{g+1}}$, if $\zeta$ has rank $k<\Cliff C-3$, where $\Cliff C$ denotes the Clifford index of $C$.

Abstract:In this note we survey recent results on the extrinsic geometry of the Jacobian locus inside $\mathsf{A}_g$. We describe the second fundamental form of the Torelli map as a multiplication map, recall the relation between totally geodesic subvarieties and Hodge loci and survey various results related to totally geodesic subvarieties and the Jacobian locus.

Abstract:Given a non-hyperelliptic curve $C\in\mathscr{M}_g$ and $2\leq n\leq g-2$, we prove that the generic fiber of the Gauss map on $W_n$ has one element and we characterize its multiple locus. Assuming that $C$ doesn't have a $\mathfrak{g}_{n+k+1}^{k+1}$, for $1\leq k\leq n-1\leq g-3$, we solve the problem of reconstructing each $\mathfrak{g}_{n+k}^k$ and the dual hypersurface of the image of its associated morphism, through information encoded in the Gauss map. For this purpose we introduce the notion of $\left(n+k\right)$-intersection loci and we study their dimensions. In the hyperelliptic case we prove that the image of the Gauss map is a union of sets whose closures are birational to their complete $\mathfrak{g}_{n+k}^k$, for each $1\leq k\leq n\leq g-1$, and that these also contain a copy of the dual hypersurface of the image of its associated morphism. From the case $k=n$ we deduce that the closure of the image of the Gauss map is birational to $\mathbb{P}^n$.

Abstract:Abstract For a non‐singular projective toric variety , the virtual logarithmic Tevelev degrees are defined as the virtual degree of the morphism from the moduli stack of logarithmic stable maps to the product . In this paper, after proving that Mikhalkin's correspondence theorem holds in genus 0 for logarithmic virtual Tevelev degrees, we use tropical methods to provide closed formulas for the case in which is a Hirzebruch surface. In order to do so, we explicitly list all the tropical curves contributing to the count.

Nodal rational curves on Enriques surfaces of base change type

Abstract:Using lattice theory, Hulek and Schütt proved that for every $m\in\mathbb{Z}_+$ there exists a nine-dimensional family $\mathcal{F}_m$ of K3 surfaces covering Enriques surfaces having an elliptic pencil with a rational bisection of arithmetic genus $m$. We present a purely geometrical lattice free construction of these surfaces, that allows us to prove that generically the mentioned bisections are nodal. Moreover, we show that, for every $m\in\mathbb{Z}_+$, the very general Enriques surface covered by a K3 surface in $\mathcal{F}_m$ admits a countable set of nodal rational curves of arithmetic genus $(4k^2-4k+1)m+4k^2-4k$ for every $k\in\mathbb{Z}_+$, that form a rank 8 subgroup of the automorphism group of the surface. As an application, we compute the linear class of the $n$-torsion multisection for every $n\in\mathbb{N}$ for a general rational elliptic surface.

The "exponential" torsion of superelliptic Jacobians

Abstract:Let $J$ be the Jacobian of a superelliptic curve defined by the equation $y^{\ell} = f(x)$, where $f$ is a separable polynomial of degree non-divisible by $\ell$. In this article we study the "exponential" (i.e. $\ell$-power) torsion of $J$. In particular, under some mild conditions on the polynomial $f$, we determine the image of the associated $\ell$-adic representation up to the determinant. We show also that the image of the determinant is contained in an explicit $\mathbb Z_{\ell}$-lattice with a finite index. As an application, we prove the Hodge, Tate and Mumford-Tate conjectures for a generic superelliptic Jacobian of the above type.

On (2,2)-decomposable genus 4 Jacobians

Abstract:We consider the question of when a Jacobian of a curve of genus $2g$ admits a $(2,2)$-isogeny to two polarized dimension $g$ abelian varieties. We find that one of them must be a Jacobian itself and, if the associated curve is hyperelliptic, so is the other. For $g=2$ this allows us to describe $(2,2)$-decomposable genus $4$ Jacobians in terms of Prym varieties. We describe the locus of such genus $4$ curves in terms of the geometry of the Igusa quartic threefold. We also explain how our characterization relates to Prym varieties of unramified double covers of plane quartic curves, and we describe this Prym map in terms of $6$ and $7$ points in $\mathbb{P}^3$. We also investigate which genus $4$ Jacobians admit a $2$-isogeny to the square of a genus $2$ Jacobian and give a full description of the hyperelliptic ones. While most of the families we find are of the expected dimension $1$, we also find a family of unexpectedly high dimension~$2$.

Orbifold Euler Characteristics of Compactified Jacobians

Abstract:We calculate the orbifold Euler characteristics of all the degree d fine universal compactified Jacobians (defined by Pagani and Tommasi) over the moduli space of stable curves of genus g with n marked points. We show that this orbifold Euler characteristic agrees with the Euler characteristic of the moduli space of stable, genus 0 curves with 2g+n markings up to a combinatorial factor, and in particular, is independent of the degree d and the choice of degree d universal fine compactified Jacobian. As a special case, we see that the universal fine compactified Jacobians defined by Kass and Pagani, depending on a universal polarization, have orbifold Euler characteristic independent of this choice of polarization.

Abstract:We establish the existence of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g\ge 2$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ whose Jacobians possess rational torsion points of order $N$ where $N=4g^2+2g-2$ or $4g^2+ 2g -4$. For $N=2g^2+7g+1$, we introduce a $1$-parameter family of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with a rational torsion point of order $N$ on their Jacobians.

Abstract:For a curve of genus at least four which is either very general or very general hyperelliptic, we classify all ways in which a power of its Jacobian can be isogenous to a product of Jacobians of curves. As an application, we show that, for a very general principally polarized abelian variety of dimension at least four, or the intermediate Jacobian of a very general cubic threefold, no power is isogenous to a product of Jacobians of curves. This confirms some cases of the Coleman-Oort conjecture. We further deduce from our results some progress on the question whether the integral Hodge conjecture fails for such abelian varieties.
