Abstract:We show that two natural cycle classes on the moduli space of compact type stable maps to a varying elliptic curve agree. The first is the virtual fundamental class from Gromov-Witten theory, and the second is the Torelli pullback of the special cycle on A_g of principally polarized abelian varieties admitting an elliptic isogeny factor.

Abstract:The locus of non-simple abelian varieties in the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties gives rise to Noether-Lefschetz cycles. We study their intersection theoretic properties using the tautological projection constructed in [CMOP24], and show that projection defines a homomorphism when restricted to cycles supported on that locus. Using Hecke correspondences and the pullback by Torelli we prove that $[\mathcal {A}_1 \times \mathcal A_{g-1}]$ is not tautological in the sense of [vdG99] for $g=12$ and $g\geq 16$ even. We also explore the connections between Noether-Lefschetz cycles and the Gromov-Witten theory of a moving elliptic curve.

d-elliptic loci in genus 2 and 3

Abstract:We consider the loci of curves of genus 2 and 3 admitting a $d$-to-1 map to a genus 1 curve. After compactifying these loci via admissible covers, we obtain formulas for their Chow classes, recovering results of Faber-Pagani and van Zelm when $d=2$. The answers exhibit quasimodularity properties similar to those in the Gromov-Witten theory of a fixed genus 1 curve; we conjecture that the quasimodularity persists in higher genus, and indicate a number of possible variants.

Abstract:We consider the generating series of special cycles on $\mathcal{A}_1(N)\times \mathcal{A}_g(N)$, with full level $N$ structure, valued in the cohomology of degree $2g$. The modularity theorem of Kudla-Millson for locally symmetric spaces implies that these series are modular. When $N=1$, the images of these loci in $\mathcal{A}_g$ are the $d$-elliptic Noether-Lefschetz loci, which are conjectured to be modular. In the appendix, it is shown that the resulting modular forms are nonzero for $g=2$ when $N\geq 11$ and $N\neq 12$.

Tautological and non-tautological cycles on the moduli space of abelian varieties

Abstract:The tautological Chow ring of the moduli space $\mathcal{A}_g$ of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$ was defined and calculated by van der Geer in 1999. By studying the Torelli pullback of algebraic cycles classes from $\mathcal{A}_g$ to the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_g^{\mathrm{ct}}$ of genus $g$ of curves of compact type, we prove that the product class $[\mathcal{A}_1\times \mathcal{A}_5]\in \mathsf{CH}^{5}(\mathcal{A}_6)$ is non-tautological, the first construction of an interesting non-tautological algebraic class on the moduli spaces of abelian varieties. For our proof, we use the complete description of the the tautological ring $\mathsf{R}^*(\mathcal{M}_6^{\mathrm{ct}})$ in genus 6 conjectured by Pixton and recently proven by Canning-Larson-Schmitt. The tautological ring $\mathsf{R}^*(\mathcal{M}_6^{\mathrm{ct}})$ has a 1-dimensional Gorenstein kernel, which is geometrically explained by the Torelli pullback of $[\mathcal{A}_1\times \mathcal{A}_5]$. More generally, the Torelli pullback of the difference between $[\mathcal{A}_1\times \mathcal{A}_{g-1}]$ and its tautological projection always lies in the Gorenstein kernel of $\mathsf{R}^*(\mathcal{M}_g^{\mathrm{ct}})$. The product map $\mathcal{A}_1\times \mathcal{A}_{g-1}\rightarrow \mathcal{A}_g$ is a Noether-Lefschetz locus with general Neron-Severi rank 2. A natural extension of van der Geer's tautological ring is obtained by including more general Noether-Lefschetz loci. Results and conjectures related to cycle classes of Noether-Lefschetz loci for all $g$ are presented.

Abstract:We examine the moduli space E=T* of complex tori T(t)=C/L(t) where L(t)=cost.n(t)Lt. We find that the Dedekind eta function furnishes a bridge between the euclidean and hyperbolic structures on T*=C-L/L as well as between the doubly periodic Weierstrass function p on T* and the theta function for the lattice E(8). The former one allows us to rewrite the Lame equation for the Bers embedding of T(1,1) in a new form. We show that L has natural decomposition into 8 sublattices (each equivalent to L) together with appropriate half-points and that this leads to some local functions and to a relation with E(8)

Abstract:We give a dynamical proof of a result of Masser and Zannier [MZ2, MZ3] about torsion points on the Legendre family of elliptic curves. Our methods also treat points of small height. A key ingredient is the arithmetic equidistribution theorem on $\mathbb{P}^1$ of Baker-Rumely, Chambert-Loir, and Favre-Rivera-Letelier. Torsion points on the elliptic curve coincide with preperiodic points for the degree-4 Lattes family of rational functions. Our main new results concern properties of the bifurcation measures for this Lattes family associated to marked points.
Elliptic-elliptic surfaces and the Hesse pencil

Abstract:We construct a family of elliptic surfaces with $p_g=q=1$ that arise from base change of the Hesse pencil. We identify explicitly a component of the higher Noether-Lefschetz locus with positive Mordell-Weil rank, and a particular surface having maximal Picard number and defined over $\mathbb Q$. These examples satisfy the infinitesimal Torelli theorem, providing a second proof of the dominance of period map, which was first obtained by Engel-Greer-Ward. A third proof is provided using the Shioda modular surface associated with $\Gamma_0(11)$. Finally, we find birational models for the degenerations at the boundary of the one-dimensional Noether-Lefschetz locus, and extend the period map at those limit points.

Tautological projection for cycles on the moduli space of abelian varieties

Abstract:We define a tautological projection operator for algebraic cycle classes on the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties $\mathcal{A}_g$: every cycle class decomposes canonically as a sum of a tautological and a non-tautological part. The main new result required for the definition of the projection operator is the vanishing of the top Chern class of the Hodge bundle over the boundary $\bar{\mathcal{A}}_g\smallsetminus \mathcal{A}_g$ of any toroidal compactification $\bar{\mathcal{A}}_g$ of the moduli space $\mathcal{A}_g$. We prove the vanishing by a careful study of residues in the boundary geometry. The existence of the projection operator raises many natural questions about cycles on $\mathcal{A}_g$. We calculate the projections of all product cycles $\mathcal{A}_{g_1}\times \ldots \times \mathcal{A}_{g_\ell}$ in terms of Schur determinants, discuss Faber's earlier calculations related to the Torelli locus, and state several open questions. The Appendix contains a conjecture about the projection of the locus of abelian varieties with real multiplication.

Abstract:Determining the limiting behaviour of the Jacobian as the underlying curve degenerates has been the subject of much interest. For nodal singularities, there are beautiful constructions of Caporaso as well as Pandharipande of compactified universal Jacobians over the moduli space of stable curves. Alexeev later obtained a canonical such compactification by extending the Torelli map out of the Deligne-Mumford compactification of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$. In contrast, Alexeev and Brunyate proved that the Torelli map does not extend over the cuspidal locus in Schubert's alternative compactification of pseudostable curves.

Holomorphic forms and non-tautological cycles on moduli spaces of curves

Abstract:We prove, for infinitely many values of $g$ and $n$, the existence of non-tautological algebraic cohomology classes on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ of smooth, genus-$g$, $n$-pointed curves. In particular, when $n=0$, our results show that there exist non-tautological algebraic cohomology classes on $\mathcal{M}_g$ for $g=12$ and all $g \geq 16$. These results generalize the work of Graber--Pandharipande and van Zelm, who proved that the classes of particular loci of bielliptic curves are non-tautological and thereby exhibited the only previously-known non-tautological class on any $\mathcal{M}_g$: the bielliptic cycle on $\mathcal{M}_{12}$. We extend their work by using the existence of holomorphic forms on certain moduli spaces $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ to produce non-tautological classes with nontrivial restriction to the interior, via which we conclude that the classes of many new double-cover loci are non-tautological.

Abstract:In recent work by Arena, Canning, Clader, Haburcak, Li, Mok, and Tamborini it was proven that for infinitely many values of $g$ and $n$, there exist non-tautological algebraic cohomology classes on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ of smooth genus $g$, $n$-pointed curves. Here we show how a generalization of their technique allows to cover most of the remaining cases, proving the existence of non-tautological algebraic cohomology classes on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ for all but finitely many values of $g$ and $n$.

Moduli of abelian varieties near the locus of products of elliptic curves

Abstract:We study various naturally defined subvarieties of the moduli space ${\mathcal A}_g$ of complex principally polarized abelian varieties (ppav) in a neighborhood of the locus of products of $g$ elliptic curves. In this neighborhood, we obtain a local description for the locus of hyperelliptic curves, reproving the recent result of Shepherd-Barron that the hyperelliptic locus is locally given by tridiagonal matrices. We further reprove and generalize to arbitrary genus the recent result of Agostini and Chua showing that the locus of Jacobians of genus 5 curves with a theta-null is an irreducible component of the locus of ppav with a theta-null such that the singular locus of the theta divisor at the corresponding two-torsion point has tangent cone of rank at most 3. We further show that the locus of ppav such that the gradient vanishes, for some odd theta characteristic, locally has codimension $g$ near the diagonal. Finally, we obtain new results on the locus where the rank of the Hessian of the theta function at a two-torsion point that lies on the theta divisor is equal to 2.

On CM Points Away from the Torelli Locus

Abstract:In this paper we prove that certain points in the Hecke orbit of a CM point in the Siegel modular variety do not lie in the open Torelli locus under suitable conditions on the field of definition and the CM factors that arise in the corresponding CM abelian variety. The proof is a combination of properties of stable Faltings height and known cases of the Sato-Tate equidistribution, and is motivated by an analogue over function fields proved by Kukulies. We also discuss the relation of our result with questions of Ekedahl-Serre type and refine a previous result showing that certain Shimura subvarieties of unitary type in the Siegel modular variety only meet the open Torelli locus in dimension zero.

Abstract:We study moduli spaces of objects in the derived category of noncommutative ruled surfaces over orbifold curves to find equivariant deformations of moduli spaces of framed sheaves on equivariant elliptic surfaces. These derived categories are a common generalization of the category of modules of the preprojective algebra and of the category of twisted D-modules over a curve. We show that the birational geometry of the Hilbert scheme of points on an equivariant elliptic surface is controlled by an elliptic root system, and conjecture in general and prove in special cases that moduli spaces of objects in these derived categories provides a deformation of birational models for the Hilbert scheme. We also study the applications of this deformation to the geometric representation theory of the central fiber, specifically to produce geometric correspondences giving rise to Lie algebra actions on the equivariant cohomology of the central fiber and give formulas for the action of the Namikawa-Markman Weyl group of monodromy reflections in terms of this Lie algebra.

Abstract:We embed the Lubin-Tate tower into a larger tower of formal schemes, the "degenerating Lubin-Tate tower." We construct a topological realization of the degenerating Lubin-Tate tower, i.e., a compatible family of presheaves of $E_{\infty}$-ring spectra on the étale site of each formal scheme in the degenerating Lubin-Tate tower, which agrees on the base of the tower with the Goerss-Hopkins presheaf on Lubin-Tate space. We define and prove basic properties of nearby cycle and vanishing cycle presheaves of spectra on formal schemes. We apply these constructions to our spectrally-enriched degenerating Lubin-Tate tower to produce, for every spectrum $X$, an "$\ell$-adic topological Jacquet-Langlands (TJL) dual" of $X$. We prove that there is a correspondence between: 1. certain irreducible representations of $Aut(\mathbb{G})$ occurring in $(\mathcal{K}(E(\mathbb{G}))^{\wedge}_{\ell})_*(X)$, and 2. certain supercuspidal irreducible representations of $GL_n$ occuring in the rational homotopy groups of the TJL dual of $X$. Here $E(\mathbb{G})$ is the Morava $E$-theory spectrum of a height $n$ formal group $\mathbb{G}$, and $\mathcal{K}(E(\mathbb{G}))^{\wedge}_{\ell}$ is its algebraic $K$-theory spectrum completed away from the characteristic of the ground field of $\mathbb{G}$. Finally, we prove that at height $1$, TJL duality preserves the $L$-factors. This means that the automorphic $L$-factor of the $GL_1$-representation associated to $(\mathcal{K}(E(\mathbb{G}))^{\wedge}_{\ell})_*(X)$ by TJL duality is precisely the $p$-local Euler factor in a meromorphic $L$-function whose special values in the left half-plane recover the orders of the $KU$-local stable homotopy groups of $X$.

Abstract:We introduce a method of constructing the virtual cycle of any scheme associated with a tangent-obstruction complex. We apply this method to constructing the virtual moduli cycle of the moduli of stable maps from n-pointed genus g curves to any smooth projective variety. As an application, we give an algebraic definition of GW-invariants for any smooth projective variety.

Abstract:We compare two cycle class maps on torsion cycles and show that they agree up to a minus sign. The first one goes back to Bloch (1979), with recent generalizations to non-closed fields. The second is the étale motivic cycle class map $\alpha^{i}_{X}\colon \text{CH}^{i}(X)_{\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}}\to H^{2i}_{L}(X,\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}(i))$ restricted to torsion cycles.

Abstract:Elliptic curves play a natural and important role in elliptic cohomology. In earlier work with I. Kriz, thes elliptic curves were interpreted physically in two ways: as corresponding to the intersection of M2 and M5 in the context of (the reduction of M-theory to) type IIA and as the elliptic fiber leading to F-theory for type IIB. In this paper we elaborate on the physical setting for various generalized cohomology theories, including elliptic cohomology, and we note that the above two seemingly unrelated descriptions can be unified using Sen's picture of the orientifold limit of F-theory compactification on K3, which unifies the Seiberg-Witten curve with the F-theory curve, and through which we naturally explain the constancy of the modulus that emerges from elliptic cohomology. This also clarifies the orbifolding performed in the previous work and justifies the appearance of the w_4 condition in the elliptic refinement of the mod 2 part of the partition function. We comment on the cohomology theory needed for the case when the modular parameter varies in the base of the elliptic fibration.

Abstract:We discuss two properties of an abelian variety, namely, being a direct summand in a product of Jacobians and the weaker property of being "split". We relate the first property to the integral Hodge conjecture for curve classes on abelian varieties. We also relate both properties to the existence problem for universal zero-cycles on Brauer-Severi varieties over abelian varieties. A similar relation is established for the existence problem of a universal codimension 2 cycle on a cubic threefold.
