Abstract:We extended the notion of Newton-Wigner localization, already constructed in the bi-dimensional de Sitter space, to the tri-dimensional case for both principal and complementary series. We identify the one-particle subspace, generated by the positive-energy modes solution of the Klein-Gordon equation, as an irreducible representation of the de Sitter group. The time-evolution of the Newton-Wigner operator was obtained explicitly, and for the complementary series the evolution is trivial, i.e., there are no dynamics. Also, we discussed heuristically the existing sign ambiguity when we do not require as a postulate that the Newton-Wigner functions must be proportional to their respective solutions in the representation of solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is the problem of defining the position of particles in 3D de Sitter space. Specifically, the author extends the previously established Newton - Wigner localization concept in 2D de Sitter space to be applicable to the principal series and complementary series in the 3D case. The main contributions of the paper include: 1. **Defining the single - particle subspace**: The author determines the single - particle subspace generated by positive - energy mode solutions. These solutions are solutions to the Klein - Gordon equation and form an irreducible representation of the de Sitter group. 2. **Time evolution**: The time evolution of the Newton - Wigner operator is clearly given. For the complementary series, the time evolution is trivial, that is, there is no dynamical behavior. 3. **Discussion of signal ambiguity**: The author heuristically discusses the problem of signal ambiguity when it is not assumed that the Newton - Wigner function must be proportional to its representation in the solutions of the Klein - Gordon equation. ### Specific problem description - **Background**: In relativistic quantum mechanics, the measurement of particle position is a fundamental but complex concept. Especially in quantum field theory in curved spacetime (QFTCS), how to define and understand the position of particles is an important research topic. - **Objective**: The paper aims to define the particle position operator in 3D de Sitter space by constructing a set of localization postulates. These postulates take into account the actions of rotation, parity, and time - reversal operators, as well as the large - mass limit condition. - **Method**: By analytically solving the Klein - Gordon equation, the author finds the basis of positive - energy modes and constructs a unitary transformation that satisfies the localization postulates on this basis. These transformations map the solutions in Hilbert space to square - integrable functions on the 2 - sphere. ### Main results - **Localization postulates**: The localization postulates for free fields in 3D de Sitter space are proposed. These postulates ensure the probability interpretation of the wave function and have good behavior under rotation, parity, and time - reversal. - **Construction of unitary transformations**: Through the localization postulates, a family of time - dependent unitary transformations \( \{W_t\}_{t \in \mathbb{R}^+} \) are constructed. These transformations map the solutions of positive - energy modes to square - integrable functions on the 2 - sphere. - **Handling of signal ambiguity**: The signal ambiguity that occurs when the large - mass limit condition is not considered is discussed, and a method for choosing an appropriate signal to eliminate this ambiguity is given. ### Conclusion The paper successfully extends the concept of Newton - Wigner localization to be applicable to free fields in 3D de Sitter space. This work not only provides a new perspective for understanding particle localization in curved spacetime but also lays the foundation for further research on the properties of quantum field theory in de Sitter space.
