Abstract:I rigorously analyze a proposal, introduced by D.R.Terno, about a spatial localization observable for a Klein-Gordon massive real particle in terms of a Poincaré-covariant family of POVMs. I prove that these POVMs are actually a kinematic deformation of the Newton-Wigner PVMs. The first moment of one of these POVMs however exactly coincides with a restriction (on a core) of the Newton-Wigner selfadjoint position operator, though the second moment does not. This fact permits to preserve all nice properties of the Newton-Wigner position observable, dropping the unphysical features arising from the Hegerfeldt theorem. The considered POVM does not permit spatially sharply localized states, but it admits families of almost localized states with arbitrary precision. Next, I establish that the Terno localization observable satisfies part of a requirement introduced by D.P.L.Castrigiano about causal temporal evolution concerning the Lebesgue measurable spatial regions of any Minkowskian reference frame. The validity of the complete Castrigiano's causality requirement is also proved for a notion of spatial localization which generalizes Terno's one in a natural way.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is related to the spatial localization of relativistic particles at a given time. Specifically, the paper explores how to define a spatial - position observable for a relativistic particle. This problem has become very complicated due to several "impossibility" results (such as Hegerfeldt's theorem). These theoretical obstacles indicate that it is not feasible to use the traditional projection - valued measure (PVM) to define the spatial - localization observable, because they will lead to unphysical phenomena such as non - locality and superluminal propagation. To solve these problems, the author analyzes a spatial - localization observable based on the positive - operator - valued measure (POVM) proposed by D.R. Terno. This POVM is Poincaré covariant, and its first - order moment is exactly the same as the Newton - Wigner position operator on a certain core, but the second - order moment is different. This enables Terno's POVM to retain all the good properties of the Newton - Wigner position observable while avoiding the problems brought by Hegerfeldt's theorem. In addition, the author proves that Terno's localization observable satisfies some of the requirements for causal time evolution proposed by D.P.L. Castrigiano, especially for Lebesgue - measurable spatial regions in the Minkowski reference frame. The author further proves that for a natural generalization of the localization concept, the complete Castrigiano causality requirements are also valid. Overall, the main goal of this paper is to provide a reasonable and physically feasible method for describing the spatial localization of particles in the relativistic framework.
