Abstract:We present an edge labeling of order- k Voronoi diagrams, , of point sets S in the plane, and study properties of the regions defined by them. Among them, we show that has a small orientable cycle and path double cover, and we identify configurations that cannot appear in for small values of k . This paper also contains a systematic study of well-known and new properties of , all whose proofs only rely on elementary geometric arguments in the plane. The maybe most comprehensive study of structural properties of was done by D.T. Lee (On k-nearest neighbor Voronoi diagrams in the plane) in 1982. Our work reviews and extends the list of properties of higher order Voronoi diagrams.

Abstract:In normal Voronoi diagram, each site is able to see all points in the plane. In this paper, we study the problem such that each site is only able to see half-plane and construct the so-called Half-plane Voronoi Diagram (HPVD). We show that the half-plane Voronoi cell of each site is not necessary convex and it could consist of many disjoint regions. We prove that the complexity of the HPVD of n sites is $O(n^2)$. Then we give an algorithm of $O(n\log n)$ time and $O(n)$ space to construct HPVD such that the boundary lines of all half-planes are parallel and the visible half-planes are in the same side of the corresponding boundary lines. For the parallel boundary lines where the visible half-planes could be in either side of the corresponding boundary lines, we give an algorithm of $O(n^2)$ time and $O(n^2)$ space to construct HPVD.

Abstract:Skyline queries are important in many application domains. In this paper, we propose a novel structure Skyline Diagram, which given a set of points, partitions the plane into a set of regions, referred to as skyline polyominos. All query points in the same skyline polyomino have the same skyline query results. Similar to kth-order Voronoi diagram commonly used to facilitate k nearest neighbor (kNN) queries, skyline diagram can be used to facilitate skyline queries and many other applications. However, it may be computationally expensive to build the skyline diagram. By exploiting some interesting properties of skyline, we present several efficient algorithms for building the diagram with respect to three kinds of skyline queries, quadrant, global, and dynamic skylines. Experimental results on both real and synthetic datasets show that our algorithms are efficient and scalable.

Abstract:Three polynomials are defined for given sets $S$ of $n$ points in general position in the plane: The Voronoi polynomial with coefficients the numbers of vertices of the order-$k$ Voronoi diagrams of $S$, the circle polynomial with coefficients the numbers of circles through three points of $S$ enclosing $k$ points of $S$, and the $E_{\leq k}$ polynomial with coefficients the numbers of (at most $k$)-edges of $S$. We present several formulas for the rectilinear crossing number of $S$ in terms of these polynomials and their roots. We also prove that the roots of the Voronoi polynomial lie on the unit circle if, and only if, $S$ is in convex position. Further, we present bounds on the location of the roots of these polynomials.

Unbounded Regions of High-Order Voronoi Diagrams of Lines and Line Segments in Higher Dimensions

Abstract:We study the behavior at infinity of the farthest and the higher-order Voronoi diagram of n line segments or lines in a d-dimensional Euclidean space. The unbounded parts of these diagrams can be encoded by a Gaussian map on the sphere of directions S d - 1 . We show that the combinatorial complexity of the Gaussian map for the order-k Voronoi diagram of n line segments and lines is O ( min { k , n - k } n d - 1 ) , which is tight for n - k = O ( 1 ) . This exactly reflects the combinatorial complexity of the unbounded features of these diagrams. All the d-dimensional cells of the farthest Voronoi diagram are unbounded, its ( d - 1 ) -skeleton is connected, and it does not have tunnels. A d-cell of the Voronoi diagram is called a tunnel if the set of its unbounded directions, represented as points on its Gaussian map, is not connected. In a three-dimensional space, the farthest Voronoi diagram of n ≥ 2 lines in general position has exactly n ( n - 1 ) three-dimensional cells. The Gaussian map of the farthest Voronoi diagram of line segments and lines can be constructed in O ( n d - 1 α ( n ) ) time, for d ≥ 4 , while if d = 3 , the time drops to worst-case optimal Θ ( n 2 ) . We extend the obtained results to bounded polyhedra and clusters of points as sites.

Abstract:In this thesis we study sets of points in the plane and their Voronoi diagrams, in particular when the points coincide. We bring together two ways of studying point sets that have received a lot of attention in recent years: Voronoi diagrams and compactifications of configuration spaces. We study moving and colliding points and this enables us to introduce `limit Voronoi diagrams'. We define several compactifications by considering geometric properties of pairs and triples of points. In this way we are able to define a smooth, real version of the Fulton-MacPherson compactification. We show how to define Voronoi diagrams on elements of these compactifications and describe the connection with the limit Voronoi diagrams.

Abstract:Higher order Delaunay triangulations are a generalization of the Delaunay triangulation that provides a class of well-shaped triangulations, over which extra criteria can be optimized. A triangulation is order-k Delaunay if the circumcircle of each triangle of the triangulation contains at most k points. In this paper we study lower and upper bounds on the number of higher order Delaunay triangulations, as well as their expected number for randomly distributed points. We show that arbitrarily large point sets can have a single higher order Delaunay triangulation, even for large orders, whereas for first order Delaunay triangulations, the maximum number is 2n−3. Next we show that uniformly distributed points have an expected number of at least 2ρ1n(1+o(1)) first order Delaunay triangulations, where ρ1 is an analytically defined constant (ρ1≈0.525785), and for k>1, the expected number of order-k Delaunay triangulations (which are not order-i for any i<k) is at least 2ρkn(1+o(1)), where ρk can be calculated numerically.

On Clustering Induced Voronoi Diagrams

Abstract:In this paper, we study a generalization of the classical Voronoi diagram, called clustering induced Voronoi diagram (CIVD). Different from the traditional model, CIVD takes as its sites the power set $U$ of an input set $P$ of objects. For each subset $C$ of $P$, CIVD uses an influence function $F(C,q)$ to measure the total (or joint) influence of all objects in $C$ on an arbitrary point $q$ in the space $\mathbb{R}^d$, and determines the influence-based Voronoi cell in $\mathbb{R}^d$ for $C$. This generalized model offers a number of new features (e.g., simultaneous clustering and space partition) to Voronoi diagram which are useful in various new applications. We investigate the general conditions for the influence function which ensure the existence of a small-size (e.g., nearly linear) approximate CIVD for a set $P$ of $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ for some fixed $d$. To construct CIVD, we first present a standalone new technique, called approximate influence (AI) decomposition, for the general CIVD problem. With only $O(n\log n)$ time, the AI decomposition partitions the space $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ into a nearly linear number of cells so that all points in each cell receive their approximate maximum influence from the same (possibly unknown) site (i.e., a subset of $P$). Based on this technique, we develop assignment algorithms to determine a proper site for each cell in the decomposition and form various $(1-\epsilon)$-approximate CIVDs for some small fixed $\epsilon>0$. Particularly, we consider two representative CIVD problems, vector CIVD and density-based CIVD, and show that both of them admit fast assignment algorithms; consequently, their $(1-\epsilon)$-approximate CIVDs can be built in $O(n \log^{\max\{3,d+1\}}n)$ and $O(n \log^{2} n)$ time, respectively.

Abstract:We study the statistics of the Voronoi cell perimeter in large bi-pointed planar quadrangulations. Such maps have two marked vertices at a fixed given distance $2s$ and their Voronoi cell perimeter is simply the length of the frontier which separates vertices closer to one marked vertex than to the other. We characterize the statistics of this perimeter as a function of $s$ for maps with a large given volume $N$ both in the scaling limit where $s$ scales as $N^{1/4}$, in which case the Voronoi cell perimeter scales as $N^{1/2}$, and in the local limit where $s$ remains finite, in which case the perimeter scales as $s^2$ for large $s$. The obtained laws are universal and are characteristics of the Brownian map and the Brownian plane respectively.

On Spheres with $k$ Points Inside

Abstract:We generalize a classical result by Boris Delaunay that introduced Delaunay triangulations. In particular, we prove that for a locally finite and coarsely dense generic point set $A$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, every generic point of $\mathbb{R}^d$ belongs to exactly $\binom{d+k}{d}$ simplices whose vertices belong to $A$ and whose circumspheres enclose exactly $k$ points of $A$. We extend this result to the cases in which the points are weighted, and when $A$ contains only finitely many points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ or in $\mathbb{S}^d$. Furthermore, we use the result to give a new geometric proof for the fact that volumes of hypersimplices are Eulerian numbers.

Abstract:We study the combinatorial complexity of Voronoi diagram of point sites on a general triangulated 2-manifold surface, based on the geodesic metric. Given a triangulated 2-manifold T of n faces and a set of m point sites S={s1,s2,…,sm}∈T, we prove that the complexity of Voronoi diagram VT(S) of S on T is O(mn) if the genus of T is zero. For a genus-g manifold T in which the samples in S are dense enough and the resulting Voronoi diagram satisfies the closed ball property, we prove that the complexity of Voronoi diagram VT(S) is O((m+g)n).

Abstract:This article presents an algorithm to compute digital images of Voronoi, Johnson-Mehl or Laguerre diagrams of a set of punctual sites, in a domain of a Euclidean space of any dimension. The principle of the algorithm is, in a first step, to investigate the voxels in balls centred around the sites, and, in a second step, to process the voxels remaining outside the balls. The optimal choice of ball radii can be determined analytically or numerically, which allows a performance of the algorithm in $O(N_v \ln N_s$), where $N_v$ is the total number of voxels of the domain and $N_s$ the number of sites of the tessellation. Periodic and non-periodic boundary conditions are considered. A major advantage of the algorithm is its simplicity which makes it very easy to implement. This makes the algorithm suitable for creating high resolution images of microstructures containing a large number of cells, in particular when calculations using FFT-based homogenisation methods are then to be applied to the simulated materials.

Abstract:We use Lie sphere geometry to describe two large categories of generalized Voronoi diagrams that can be encoded in terms of the Lie quadric, the Lie inner product, and polyhedra. The first class consists of diagrams defined in terms of extremal spheres in the space of Lie spheres, and the second class includes minimization diagrams for functions that can be expressed in terms of affine functions on a higher-dimensional space. These results unify and generalize previous descriptions of generalized Voronoi diagrams as convex hull problems. Special cases include classical Voronoi diagrams, power diagrams, order $k$ and farthest point diagrams, Apollonius diagrams, medial axes, and generalized Voronoi diagrams whose sites are combinations of points, spheres and half-spaces. We describe the application of these results to algorithms for computing generalized Voronoi diagrams and find the complexity of these algorithms.

Abstract:Given an $n$-element set $C\subseteq\mathbb{R}^d$ and a (sufficiently generic) $k$-element multiset $V\subseteq\mathbb{R}^d$, we can order the points in $C$ by ranking each point $c\in C$ according to the sum of the distances from $c$ to the points of $V$. Let $\Psi_k(C)$ denote the set of orderings of $C$ that can be obtained in this manner as $V$ varies, and let $\psi^{\mathrm{max}}_{d,k}(n)$ be the maximum of $\lvert\Psi_k(C)\rvert$ as $C$ ranges over all $n$-element subsets of $\mathbb{R}^d$. We prove that $\psi^{\mathrm{max}}_{d,k}(n)=\Theta_{d,k}(n^{2dk})$ when $d \geq 2$ and that $\psi^{\mathrm{max}}_{1,k}(n)=\Theta_k(n^{4\lceil k/2\rceil -1})$. As a step toward proving this result, we establish a bound on the number of sign patterns determined by a collection of functions that are sums of radicals of nonnegative polynomials; this can be understood as an analogue of a classical theorem of Warren. We also prove several results about the set $\Psi(C)=\bigcup_{k\geq 1}\Psi_k(C)$; this includes an exact description of $\Psi(C)$ when $d=1$ and when $C$ is the set of vertices of a vertex-transitive polytope.

Kinetic Geodesic Voronoi Diagrams in a Simple Polygon

Abstract:We study the geodesic Voronoi diagram of a set $S$ of $n$ linearly moving sites inside a static simple polygon $P$ with $m$ vertices. We identify all events where the structure of the Voronoi diagram changes, bound the number of such events, and then develop a kinetic data structure (KDS) that maintains the geodesic Voronoi diagram as the sites move. To this end, we first analyze how often a single bisector, defined by two sites, or a single Voronoi center, defined by three sites, can change. For both these structures we prove that the number of such changes is at most $O(m^3)$, and that this is tight in the worst case. Moreover, we develop compact, responsive, local, and efficient kinetic data structures for both structures. Our data structures use linear space and process a worst-case optimal number of events. Our bisector and Voronoi center kinetic data structures handle each event in $O(\log^2 m)$ time. Both structures can be extended to efficiently support updating the movement of the sites as well. Using these data structures as building blocks we obtain a compact KDS for maintaining the full geodesic Voronoi diagram.

Abstract:The computation of Voronoi Diagrams, or their dual Delauney triangulations is difficult in high dimensions. In a recent publication Polianskii and Pokorny propose an iterative randomized algorithm facilitating the approximation of Voronoi tesselations in high dimensions. In this paper, we provide an improved vertex search method that is not only exact but even faster than the bisection method that was previously recommended. Building on this we also provide a depth-first graph-traversal algorithm which allows us to compute the entire Voronoi diagram. This enables us to compare the outcomes with those of classical algorithms like qHull, which we either match or marginally beat in terms of computation time. We furthermore show how the raycasting algorithm naturally lends to a Monte Carlo approximation for the volume and boundary integrals of the Voronoi cells, both of which are of importance for finite Volume methods. We compare the Monte-Carlo methods to the exact polygonal integration, as well as a hybrid approximation scheme.
