Abstract:Voronoi cells of a discrete set in Euclidean space are known as generalized polyhedra. We identify polyhedral cells of a discrete set through a direction cone. For an arbitrary set we distinguish polyhedral from non-polyhedral cells using inversion at a sphere and a theorem of semi-infinite linear programming.

Abstract:In normal Voronoi diagram, each site is able to see all points in the plane. In this paper, we study the problem such that each site is only able to see half-plane and construct the so-called Half-plane Voronoi Diagram (HPVD). We show that the half-plane Voronoi cell of each site is not necessary convex and it could consist of many disjoint regions. We prove that the complexity of the HPVD of n sites is $O(n^2)$. Then we give an algorithm of $O(n\log n)$ time and $O(n)$ space to construct HPVD such that the boundary lines of all half-planes are parallel and the visible half-planes are in the same side of the corresponding boundary lines. For the parallel boundary lines where the visible half-planes could be in either side of the corresponding boundary lines, we give an algorithm of $O(n^2)$ time and $O(n^2)$ space to construct HPVD.

Abstract:We study Voronoi diagrams of manifolds and varieties with respect to polyhedral norms. We provide upper and lower bounds on the dimensions of Voronoi cells. For algebraic varieties, we count their full-dimensional Voronoi cells. As an application, we consider the polyhedral Wasserstein distance between discrete probability distributions.

Polyline-sourced Geodesic Voronoi Diagrams on Triangle Meshes

Abstract:This paper studies the Voronoi diagrams on 2-manifold meshes based on geodesic metric a.k.a. geodesic Voronoi diagrams or GVDs, which have polyline generators. We show that our general setting leads to situations more complicated than conventional 2D Euclidean Voronoi diagrams as well as point-source based GVDs, since a typical bisector contains line segments, hyperbolic segments and parabolic segments. To tackle this challenge, we introduce a new concept, called local Voronoi diagram LVD, which is a combination of additively weighted Voronoi diagram and line-segment Voronoi diagram on a mesh triangle. We show that when restricting on a single mesh triangle, the GVD is a subset of the LVD and only two types of mesh triangles can contain GVD edges. Based on these results, we propose an efficient algorithm for constructing the GVD with polyline generators. Our algorithm runs in OnNlogN time and takes OnN space on an n-face mesh with m generators, where N = max{m, n}. Computational results on real-world models demonstrate the efficiency of our algorithm.
Weighted Voronoi-Delaunay dual on polyhedral surfaces and its finiteness

Abstract:We aim to give a strict proof of the existence and uniqueness of the weighted Voronoi decomposition and the dual weighted Delaunay triangulation on Euclidean and hyperbolic polyhedral surface as well as hyperbolic surface with geodesic boundaries. Since the former definition of the Voronoi cell may not be simply connected, we slightly adjust the definition. Our proof is to construct an isotopic map instead of using the edge-flipping algorithm, which is a generalization of the one by Dyer et al. The main theorem of this paper is a lemma for proving the existence of the inversive distance circle packing.

Logarithmic Voronoi polytopes for discrete linear models

Abstract:We study logarithmic Voronoi cells for linear statistical models and partial linear models. The logarithmic Voronoi cells at points on such model are polytopes. To any $d$-dimensional linear model inside the probability simplex $\Delta_{n-1}$, we can associate an $n\times d$ matrix $B$. For interior points, we describe the vertices of these polytopes in terms of co-circuits of $B$. We also show that these polytopes are combinatorially isomorphic to the dual of a vector configuration with Gale diagram $B$. This means that logarithmic Voronoi cells at all interior points on a linear model have the same combinatorial type. We also describe logarithmic Voronoi cells at points on the boundary of the simplex. Finally, we study logarithmic Voronoi cells of partial linear models, where the points on the boundary of the model are especially of interest.

Generalized Voronoi Diagrams and Lie Sphere Geometry

Abstract:We use Lie sphere geometry to describe two large categories of generalized Voronoi diagrams that can be encoded in terms of the Lie quadric, the Lie inner product, and polyhedra. The first class consists of diagrams defined in terms of extremal spheres in the space of Lie spheres, and the second class includes minimization diagrams for functions that can be expressed in terms of affine functions on a higher-dimensional space. These results unify and generalize previous descriptions of generalized Voronoi diagrams as convex hull problems. Special cases include classical Voronoi diagrams, power diagrams, order $k$ and farthest point diagrams, Apollonius diagrams, medial axes, and generalized Voronoi diagrams whose sites are combinations of points, spheres and half-spaces. We describe the application of these results to algorithms for computing generalized Voronoi diagrams and find the complexity of these algorithms.

Abstract:We prove the Voronoi conjecture for five-dimensional parallelohedra. Namely, we show that if a convex five-dimensional polytope $P$ tiles $\mathbb{R}^5$ with translations, then $P$ is an affine image of the Dirichlet-Voronoi polytope for a five-dimensional lattice.

Natural questions arise concerning how to characterize these arrangements—are they ordered or disordered? If they are ordered, how are they ordered and what kinds of defects do they possess? Voronoi tessellations, originally introduced to study problems in pure mathematics, have become a powerful and versatile tool for analyzing countless problems in pure and applied physics. We explain the basics of Voronoi tessellations and the shapes that they produce and describe how they can be used to characterize many physical systems.

Many-sided Poisson-Voronoi cells with only Gabriel neighbors

Abstract:Let $p_n^G$ be the probability for a planar Poisson-Voronoi cell to be $n$-sided {\it and\,} have only Gabriel neighbors. Using an exact coordinate transformation followed by scaling arguments and a mean-field type calculation, we obtain the asymptotic expansion of $\log p_n^G$ in the limit of large $n$. We determine several statistical properties of a many-sided cell obeying this `Gabriel condition.' In particular, the cell perimeter, when parametrized as a function $\tau(\theta)$ of the polar angle $\theta$, behaves as a Brownian bridge on the interval $0\le\theta\le 2\pi$. We point out similarities and differences with related problems in random geometry.

Abstract:Cycloids, hypocycloids and epicycloids have an often forgotten common property: they are homothetic to their evolutes. But what if we use convex symmetric polygons as unit balls, can we define evolutes and cycloids which are genuinely discrete? Indeed, we can! We define discrete cycloids as eigenvectors of a discrete double evolute transform which can be seen as a linear operator on a vector space we call curvature radius space. We are also able to classify such cycloids according to the eigenvalues of that transform, and show that the number of cusps of each cycloid is well determined by the ordering of those eigenvalues. As an elegant application, we easily establish a version of the four-vertex theorem for closed convex polygons. The whole theory is developed using only linear algebra, and concrete examples are given.

Unbounded Regions of High-Order Voronoi Diagrams of Lines and Line Segments in Higher Dimensions

Abstract:We study the behavior at infinity of the farthest and the higher-order Voronoi diagram of n line segments or lines in a d-dimensional Euclidean space. The unbounded parts of these diagrams can be encoded by a Gaussian map on the sphere of directions S d - 1 . We show that the combinatorial complexity of the Gaussian map for the order-k Voronoi diagram of n line segments and lines is O ( min { k , n - k } n d - 1 ) , which is tight for n - k = O ( 1 ) . This exactly reflects the combinatorial complexity of the unbounded features of these diagrams. All the d-dimensional cells of the farthest Voronoi diagram are unbounded, its ( d - 1 ) -skeleton is connected, and it does not have tunnels. A d-cell of the Voronoi diagram is called a tunnel if the set of its unbounded directions, represented as points on its Gaussian map, is not connected. In a three-dimensional space, the farthest Voronoi diagram of n ≥ 2 lines in general position has exactly n ( n - 1 ) three-dimensional cells. The Gaussian map of the farthest Voronoi diagram of line segments and lines can be constructed in O ( n d - 1 α ( n ) ) time, for d ≥ 4 , while if d = 3 , the time drops to worst-case optimal Θ ( n 2 ) . We extend the obtained results to bounded polyhedra and clusters of points as sites.

Abstract:The Voronoi tessellation of a homogeneous Poisson point process in the lower half-plane gives rise to a family of vertical elongated cells in the upper half-plane. The set of edges of these cells is ruled by a Markovian branching mechanism which is asymptotically described by two sequences of iid variables which are respectively Beta and exponentially distributed. This leads to a precise description of the scaling limit of a so-called typical cell. The limit object is a random apeirogon that we name menhir in reference to the Gallic huge stones. We also deduce from the aforementioned branching mechanism that the number of vertices of a cell of height $\lambda$ is asymptotically equal to $\frac45\log\lambda$.

Abstract:In this thesis we study sets of points in the plane and their Voronoi diagrams, in particular when the points coincide. We bring together two ways of studying point sets that have received a lot of attention in recent years: Voronoi diagrams and compactifications of configuration spaces. We study moving and colliding points and this enables us to introduce `limit Voronoi diagrams'. We define several compactifications by considering geometric properties of pairs and triples of points. In this way we are able to define a smooth, real version of the Fulton-MacPherson compactification. We show how to define Voronoi diagrams on elements of these compactifications and describe the connection with the limit Voronoi diagrams.

Abstract:Consider a Voronoi tiling of the Euclidean space based on a realization of a inhomogeneous Poisson random set. A Voronoi polyomino is a finite and connected union of Voronoi tiles. In this paper we provide tail bounds for the number of boxes that are intersected by a Voronoi polyomino, and vice-versa. These results will be crucial to analyze self-avoiding paths, greedy polyominoes and first-passage percolation models on Voronoi tilings and on the dual graph, named the Delaunay triangulation.

Abstract:We study Voronoi cells in the statistical setting by considering preimages of the maximum likelihood estimator that tessellate an open probability simplex. In general, logarithmic Voronoi cells are convex sets. However, for certain algebraic models, namely finite models, models with ML degree 1, linear models, and log-linear (or toric) models, we show that logarithmic Voronoi cells are polytopes. As a corollary, the algebraic moment map has polytopes for both its fibres and its image, when restricted to the simplex. We also compute non-polytopal logarithmic Voronoi cells using numerical algebraic geometry. Finally, we determine logarithmic Voronoi polytopes for the finite model consisting of all empirical distributions of a fixed sample size. These polytopes are dual to the logarithmic root polytopes of Lie type A, and we characterize their faces.

Abstract:The computation of Voronoi Diagrams, or their dual Delauney triangulations is difficult in high dimensions. In a recent publication Polianskii and Pokorny propose an iterative randomized algorithm facilitating the approximation of Voronoi tesselations in high dimensions. In this paper, we provide an improved vertex search method that is not only exact but even faster than the bisection method that was previously recommended. Building on this we also provide a depth-first graph-traversal algorithm which allows us to compute the entire Voronoi diagram. This enables us to compare the outcomes with those of classical algorithms like qHull, which we either match or marginally beat in terms of computation time. We furthermore show how the raycasting algorithm naturally lends to a Monte Carlo approximation for the volume and boundary integrals of the Voronoi cells, both of which are of importance for finite Volume methods. We compare the Monte-Carlo methods to the exact polygonal integration, as well as a hybrid approximation scheme.

Abstract:Consider a planar random point process made of the union of a point (the origin) and of a Poisson point process with a uniform intensity outside a deterministic set surrounding the origin. When the intensity goes to infinity, we show that the Voronoi cell associated with the origin converges from above to a deterministic convex set. We describe this set and give the asymptotics of the expectation of its defect area, defect perimeter and number of vertices. On the way, two intermediary questions are treated. First, we describe the mean characteristics of the Poisson-Voronoi cell conditioned on containing a fixed convex body around the origin and secondly, we show that the nucleus of such cell converges to the Steiner point of the convex body. As in Rényi and Sulanke's seminal papers on random convex hulls, the regularity of the convex body has crucial importance. We deal with both the smooth and polygonal cases. Techniques are based notably on accurate estimates of the area of the Voronoi flower and of the support function of the cell containing the origin as well as on an Efron-type relation.

Abstract:In this work we study inside-out dissections of polygons and polyhedra. We first show that an arbitrary polygon can be inside-out dissected with $2n+1$ pieces, thereby improving the best previous upper bound of $4(n-2)$ pieces. Additionally, we establish that a regular polygon can be inside-out dissected with at most $6$ pieces. Lastly, we prove that any polyhedron that can be decomposed into finitely many regular tetrahedra and octahedra can be inside-out dissected.

Abstract:A polyiamond is a polygon composed of unit equilateral triangles, and a generalized deltahedron is a convex polyhedron whose every face is a convex polyiamond. We study a variant where one face may be an exception. For a convex polygon P, if there is a convex polyhedron that has P as one face and all the other faces are convex polyiamonds, then we say that P can be domed. Our main result is a complete characterization of which equiangular n-gons can be domed: only if n is in {3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12}, and only with some conditions on the integer edge lengths.
