Abstract:We investigate the order of the Tate--Shafarevich group of abelian varieties modulo rational squares. Our main result shows that every square-free natural number appears as the non square-free part of the Tate--Shafarevich group of some abelian variety, thereby validating a conjecture of W. Stein.

Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\Bbb{Q}$. We study the behavior of the Tate--Shafarevich group of $E$ under quadratic extensions $\Bbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})/\Bbb{Q}$. First, we determine the cokernel of the restriction map $H^1(\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{\Bbb{Q}}/\Bbb{Q}),E)[2] \to \bigoplus_{p}H^1(\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{\Bbb{Q}_p}/\Bbb{Q}_p),E)[2]$. Using this result, without assuming the finiteness of the Tate--Shafarevich group, we prove that the ratio $\frac{\#\Sha(E/\Bbb{Q}(\sqrt{D}))[2] \cdot \#2\Sha(E/\Bbb{Q}(\sqrt{D}))[4]}{\#\Sha(E_D/\Bbb{Q})[2]}$ can grow arbitrarily large, where $E_D$ denotes the quadratic twist of $E$ by $D$. For elliptic curves of the form $E : y^2 = x^3 + px$ with $p$ an odd prime, assuming the finiteness of the relevant Tate--Shafarevich groups, we prove two results: first, that $\Sha(E_D/\Bbb{Q})[2] = 0$ for infinitely many square-free integers $D$, and second, that $\#\Sha(E/\Bbb{Q}(\sqrt{D}))[2] \leq 4$ for infinitely many imaginary quadratic fields $\Bbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$.

Abstract:We provide a formula for the order of the Tate--Shafarevich group of elliptic curves over dihedral extensions of number fields of order $2n$, up to $4^{th}$ powers and primes dividing $n$. Specifically, for odd $n$ it is equal to the order of the Tate--Shafarevich group over the quadratic subextension. A similar formula holds for even $n$.

Abstract:The Shafarevich-Tate group $W (\mathscr{A})$ measures the failure of the Hasse principle for an abelian variety $\mathscr{A}$. Using a correspondence between the abelian varieties and the higher dimensional non-commutative tori, we prove that $W (\mathscr{A})\cong Cl~(\Lambda)\oplus Cl~(\Lambda)$ or $W (\mathscr{A})\cong \left(\mathbf{Z}/2^k\mathbf{Z}\right) \oplus Cl_{~\mathbf{odd}}~(\Lambda)\oplus Cl_{~\mathbf{odd}}~(\Lambda)$, where $Cl~(\Lambda)$ is the ideal class group of a ring $\Lambda$ associated to the K-theory of the non-commutative tori and $2^k $ divides the order of $Cl~(\Lambda)$. The case of elliptic curves with complex multiplication is considered in detail.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over a finitely generated field $K$ of characteristic $p>0$. We proved that the finiteness of the $\ell$-primary part of $\mathrm{Br}(X_{K^s})^{G_K}$ for a single prime $\ell\neq p$ will imply the finiteness of the prime-to-$p$ part of $\mathrm{Br}(X_{K^s})^{G_K}$, generalizing a theorem of Tate and Lichtenbaum for varieties over finite fields. For an abelian variety $A$ over $K$, we proved a similar result for the Tate-Shafarevich group of $A$, generalizing a theorem of Schneider for abelian varieties over global function fields.

Abstract:For an abelian variety $A$ over a finitely generated field $K$ of characteristic $p > 0$, we prove that the algebraic rank of $A$ is at most a suitably defined analytic rank. Moreover, we prove that equality, i.e., the BSD rank conjecture, holds for $A/K$ if and only if a suitably defined Tate--Shafarevich group of $A/K$ (1) has finite $\ell$-primary component for some/all $\ell \neq p$, or (2) finite prime-to-$p$ part, or (3) has $p$-primary part of finite exponent, or (4) is of finite exponent. There is an algorithm to verify those conditions for concretely given $A/K$.

Abelian surfaces over $\mathbb{F}_{q}(t)$ with large Tate-Shafarevich groups

Abstract:We produce an explicit sequence $\left(S_a \right)_{a \geq 1}$ of abelian surfaces over the rational function field $\mathbb{F}_{q}(t)$ whose Tate-Shafarevich groups are finite and large. More precisely, we establish the estimate $\left \arrowvert\mathrm{III}(S_a) \right \arrowvert = H(S_a)^{1 + o(1)}$ as $a \rightarrow \infty$, where $H(S_a)$ denotes the exponential height of $S_a$. Our method is to prove that each $S_a$ satisfies the BSD conjecture, analyse the geometry and arithmetic of its Néron model and give an explicit expression for its $L$-function in terms of Gauss and Kloosterman sums. By studying the relative distribution of the angles associated to these character sums, we estimate the size of the central value of $L(S_a, T)$, hence the order of $\mathrm{III}(S_a)$.

On the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for modular abelian surfaces

Abstract:Let $A$ be a modular abelian surface over $Q$ which either has trivial geometric endomorphism ring, or arises as the restriction of scalars of an elliptic curve over an imaginary quadratic field which is modular and is not a $Q$-curve. In the former case, assume that there exists an odd Dirichlet character $\chi$ such that $L(A,\chi,1)\neq 0$. We prove the following implication: if $L(A, 1) \ne 0$, and the $p$-adic eigenvariety for $GSp_4$ is smooth at the point corresponding to $A$ (and some auxiliary technical hypotheses hold), then $A(Q)$ is finite, as predicted by the Birch--Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, and the $p$-part of the Tate--Shafarevich group is also finite. We also prove one inclusion of the cyclotomic Iwasawa Main Conjecture for $A$. Moreover, we also prove analogous results for cohomological automorphic representations of $GSp_4$, removing many of the restrictive hypotheses in our earlier work [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2003.05960" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2003.05960">2003.05960</a>]; for cohomological representations we do not need to assume smoothness of the eigenvariety, since it is automatic in this case. The main ingredient in the proof is the Euler system attached to the spin representations of genus $2$ Siegel modular forms constructed in our earlier work with Skinner.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a field and $V$ be a set of rank one valuations of $K$. The corresponding Tate-Shafarevich group of a $K$-torus $T$ is $Sha(T , V) = \ker\left(H^1(K , T) \to \prod_{v \in V} H^1(K_v , T)\right)$. We prove that if $K = k(X)$ is the function field of a smooth geometrically integral quasi-projective variety over a field $k$ of characteristic 0 and $V$ is the set of discrete valuations of $K$ associated with prime divisors on $X$, then for any torus $T$ defined over the base field $k$, the group $Sha(T , V)$ is finite in the following situations: (1) $k$ is finitely generated and $X(k) \neq \emptyset$; (2) $k$ is a number field.

Abstract:We prove, under suitable assumptions, that $p$-torsion Tate-Shafarevich classes for elliptic curves over the rationals are visible in quotients of Jacobians of modular curves, as predicted by a conjecture of Jetchev-Stein. The key ingredient is the non-triviality of the Bertolini-Darmon bipartite Kolyvagin system, which implies that suitable cohomology classes of the system form a basis of the Selmer group modulo $p$.

The Shafarevich conjecture for hypersurfaces in abelian varieties

Abstract:Faltings proved that there are finitely many abelian varieties of genus $g$ over a number field $K$, with good reduction outside a finite set of primes $S$. Fixing one of these abelian varieties $A$, we prove that there are finitely many smooth hypersurfaces in $A$, with good reduction outside $S$, representing a given ample class in the Néron-Severi group of $A$, up to translation, as long as the dimension of $A$ is at least $4$. Our approach builds on the approach of arXiv:1807.02721 which studies $p$-adic variations of Hodge structure to turn finiteness results for $p$-adic Galois representations into geometric finiteness statements. A key new ingredient is an approach to proving big monodromy for the variations of Hodge structure arising from the middle cohomology of these hypersurfaces using the Tannakian theory of sheaf convolution on abelian varieties.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a totally real field in which a prime number $p>2$ is inert. We continue the study of the (generalized) Goren--Oort strata on quaternionic Shimura varieties over finite extensions of $\mathbb F_p$. We prove that, when the dimension of the quaternionic Shimura variety is even, the Tate conjecture for the special fiber of the quaternionic Shimura variety holds for the cuspidal $\pi$-isotypical component, as long as the two unramified Satake parameters at $p$ are not differed by a root of unity.
Integers expressible as the sum of two rational cubes

Abstract:We prove that a positive proportion of integers are expressible as the sum of two rational cubes, and a positive proportion are not so expressible, thus proving a conjecture of Davenport. More generally, we prove that a positive proportion (in fact, at least one sixth) of elliptic curves in any cubic twist family have rank 0, and a positive proportion (in fact, at least one sixth) of elliptic curves with good reduction at 2 in any cubic twist family have rank 1. Our method involves proving that the average size of the 2-Selmer group of elliptic curves in any cubic twist family, having any given root number, is 3. We accomplish this by generalizing a parametrization, due to the second author and Ho, of elliptic curves with extra structure by pairs of binary cubic forms. We then use a novel combination of geometry-of-numbers methods and the circle method that builds on earlier work of Ruth and the first author. In particular, we make use of a new interpretation of the singular integral and series arising in the circle method in terms of real and $p$-adic Haar measures on the relevant group. We prove a uniformity estimate for integral points on the relevant quadric, which along with a sieve allows us to prove that the average size of the 2-Selmer group over the cubic twist family is 3. By suitably partitioning the subset of curves in the family with given root number, we effect a further sieve to show that the root number is equidistributed and that the same average, now taken over only those curves of given root number, is again 3. Finally, we apply the $p$-parity theorem of Dokchitser-Dokchitser and a $p$-converse theorem of Burungale-Skinner to conclude. We also prove the analogue of the above results for the sequence of square numbers: namely, we prove that a positive proportion of square integers are expressible as the sum of two rational cubes, and a positive proportion are not.

On the structure of the Bloch--Kato Selmer groups of modular forms over anticyclotomic $\mathbf{Z}_p$-towers

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime number and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field in which $p$ is split. Let $f$ be a modular form with good reduction at $p$. We study the variation of the Bloch--Kato Selmer groups and the Bloch--Kato--Shafarevich--Tate groups of $f$ over the anticyclotomic $\mathbf{Z}_p$-extension $K_\infty$ of $K$. In particular, we show that under the generalized Heegner hypothesis, if the $p$-localization of the generalized Heegner cycle attached to $f$ is primitive and certain local conditions hold, then the Pontryagin dual of the Selmer group of $f$ over $K_\infty$ is free over the Iwasawa algebra. Consequently, the Bloch--Kato--Shafarevich--Tate groups of $f$ vanish. This generalizes earlier works of Matar and Matar--Nekovář on elliptic curves. Furthermore, our proof applies uniformly to the ordinary and non-ordinary settings.

Quadratic twists of tiling number elliptic curves

Abstract:A positive integer $n$ is called a tiling number if the equilateral triangle can be dissected into $nk^2$ congruent triangles for some integer $k$. An integer $n>3$ is tiling number if and only if at least one of the elliptic curves $E^{(\pm n)}:\pm ny^2=x(x-1)(x+3)$ has positive Mordell-Weil rank. Let $A$ denote one of the two curves. In this paper, using Waldspurger formula and an induction method, for $n\equiv 3,7\mod 24$ positive square-free, as well as some other residue classes, we express the parity of analytic Sha of $A$ in terms of the genus number $g(m):=\#2\mathrm{Cl}(\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-m}))$ as $m$ runs over factors of $n$. Together with $2$-descent method which express $\mathrm{dim}_{\mathbb{F}_2}\mathrm{Sel}_2(A/\mathbb{Q})/A[2]$ in terms of the corank of a matrix of $\mathbb{F}_2$-coefficients, we show that for $n\equiv 3,7\mod 24$ positive square-free, the analytic Sha of $A$ being odd is equivalent to that $\mathrm{Sel}_2(A/\mathbb{Q})/A[2]$ being trivial, as predicted by the BSD conjecture.

Abstract:In this article, we aim to establish a prototype result regarding lower bounds of (joint) distributions of central $L'$-values through extending a method of Radziwill and Soundararajan of proving conditional bounds for distributions of central $L$-values (via the one-level density of low-lying zeros of involving $L$-functions). To illustrate this, we give several conditional bounds towards joint distributions of central $L'$-values and orders of Tate-Shafarevich groups in rank-one families of quadratic twists. As an application, we derive a simultaneous non-vanishing result for central $L'$-values in families of quadratic twists of triples of holomorphic modular forms.
