Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\Bbb{Q}$. We study the behavior of the Tate--Shafarevich group of $E$ under quadratic extensions $\Bbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})/\Bbb{Q}$. First, we determine the cokernel of the restriction map $H^1(\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{\Bbb{Q}}/\Bbb{Q}),E)[2] \to \bigoplus_{p}H^1(\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{\Bbb{Q}_p}/\Bbb{Q}_p),E)[2]$. Using this result, without assuming the finiteness of the Tate--Shafarevich group, we prove that the ratio $\frac{\#\Sha(E/\Bbb{Q}(\sqrt{D}))[2] \cdot \#2\Sha(E/\Bbb{Q}(\sqrt{D}))[4]}{\#\Sha(E_D/\Bbb{Q})[2]}$ can grow arbitrarily large, where $E_D$ denotes the quadratic twist of $E$ by $D$. For elliptic curves of the form $E : y^2 = x^3 + px$ with $p$ an odd prime, assuming the finiteness of the relevant Tate--Shafarevich groups, we prove two results: first, that $\Sha(E_D/\Bbb{Q})[2] = 0$ for infinitely many square-free integers $D$, and second, that $\#\Sha(E/\Bbb{Q}(\sqrt{D}))[2] \leq 4$ for infinitely many imaginary quadratic fields $\Bbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### What problems does this paper attempt to solve?
This paper aims to study the behavior of the Tate - Shafarevich group of the elliptic curve \(E\) under the quadratic field extension \(Q(\sqrt{D})/Q\). Specifically, the author attempts to answer the following two main questions:
1. **Changes in the Tate - Shafarevich group under quadratic field extensions**:
- Study how \(\#X(E/Q(\sqrt{D}))[2]\) changes with \(D\).
- Explore how this change is related to the behavior of \(\#X(E_D/Q)[2]\), where \(E_D\) is the quadratic twist of \(E\).
2. **Changes in the number of counterexamples to the local - global principle**:
- When a torsor \([C/K]\in X(E/K)\) obtains \(L\)-rational points through the field extension \(L/K\), its image in \(X(E/L)\) becomes 0. However, the number of counterexamples to the local - global principle may increase over \(L\), making the behavior of \(\#X(E/L)\) relative to \(\#X(E/K)\) more complex.
### Main results
The author has proven the following main conclusions:
- For any integer \(r\) and an elliptic curve \(E\) defined over \(Q\), there are infinitely many quadratic fields \(Q(\sqrt{D})\) such that
\[
\frac{\#X(E/Q(\sqrt{D}))[2]\cdot\#2X(E/Q(\sqrt{D}))[4]}{\#X(E_D/Q)[2]}\geq r.
\]
This result shows that \(\#X(E/Q(\sqrt{D}))[2]\) and \(\#2X(E/Q(\sqrt{D}))[4]\) can be arbitrarily large.
- For an elliptic curve of the form \(E:y^{2}=x^{3}+px\) (where \(p\) is an odd prime), assuming that the Tate - Shafarevich group is finite, the author has proven that:
- There are infinitely many square - free integers \(D\) such that \(X(E_D/Q)[2]=0\).
- There are infinitely many imaginary quadratic fields \(Q(\sqrt{D})\) such that \(\#X(E/Q(\sqrt{D}))[2]\leq4\).
### Key technical means
To obtain these results, the author uses the following key technical means:
1. **Study of restriction maps and cohomology kernels**:
- Determine the cohomology kernel of the restriction map \(H^{1}(Gal(Q/Q),E)[2]\to\bigoplus_pH^{1}(Gal(Q_p/Q_p),E)[2]\).
2. **Properties of Selmer groups**:
- Use the properties of Selmer groups to derive the properties of the Tate - Shafarevich group, especially by using Cassels - Tate duality.
3. **Relationship between local and global cohomology**:
- Study the relationship between local and global cohomology, especially in the case of quadratic extensions.
### Summary
This paper, through in - depth research on the behavior of the Tate - Shafarevich group under quadratic field extensions, reveals the complexity of the local - global principle of elliptic curves on different fields and provides specific quantitative results on the growth of these groups. This not only deepens the understanding of the Tate - Shafarevich group but also provides new perspectives and tools for future research.
