One-dimensional quasi-uniform Kronecker sequences

Abstract:In this short note, we prove that the one-dimensional Kronecker sequence $i\alpha \bmod 1, i=0,1,2,\ldots,$ is quasi-uniform if and only if $\alpha$ is a badly approximable number. Our elementary proof relies on a result on the three-gap theorem for Kronecker sequences due to Halton (1965).

Abstract:We conjecture unimodality for some sequences of generalized Kronecker coefficients and prove it for partitions with at most two columns. The proof is based on a hard Lefschetz property for corresponding highest weight spaces. We also study more general Lefschetz properties, show implications to a higher-dimensional analogue of the Alon–Tarsi conjecture on Latin squares and give related positivity results.

Abstract:We provide bounds on the sizes of the gaps -- defined broadly -- in the set $\{k_1\vbeta_1 + \ldots + k_n\vbeta_n \mbox{ (mod 1)} : k_i \in \Z \cap (0,Q^\frac{1}{n}]\}$ for generic $\vbeta_1, \ldots, \vbeta_n \in \R^m$ and all sufficiently large $Q$. We also introduce a related problem in Diophantine approximation, which we believe is of independent interest.

Abstract:Are common quasi-Monte Carlo sequences quasi-uniform? While this question remains widely open, in this short note, we prove that the two-dimensional Sobol' sequence is not quasi-uniform. This result partially answers an unsolved problem of Sobol' and Shukhman (2007) in a negative manner.

Abstract:A few years ago Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko introduced an interesting quantization of the real numbers as certain power series in a quantization parameter $q.$ It is known now that the golden ratio has minimal radius among all these series. We study the rational numbers having maximal radius of convergence equal to 1, which we call Kronecker fractions. We prove that the corresponding continued fraction expansions must be palindromic and describe all Kronecker fractions with prime denominators. We found several infinite families of Kronecker fractions and all Kronecker fractions with denominator less than 2000. We also comment on the irrational case and on the relation with braids, rational knots and links.

Abstract:Digital Kronecker-sequences are a non-archimedean analog of classical Kronecker-sequences whose construction is based on Laurent series over a finite field. In this paper it is shown that for almost all digital Kronecker-sequences the star discrepancy satisfies DN⁎⩾c(q,s)(logN)sloglogN for infinitely many N∈N, where c(q,s)>0 only depends on the dimension s and on the order q of the underlying finite field, but not on N. This result shows that a corresponding metrical upper bound due to Larcher is up to some loglogN term best possible.

Abstract:Given $\boldsymbol{\alpha} \in [0,1]^d$, we estimate the smooth discrepancy of the Kronecker sequence $(n \boldsymbol{\alpha} \,\mathrm{mod}\, 1)_{n\geq 1}$. We find that it can be smaller than the classical discrepancy of $\textbf{any}$ sequence when $d \le 2$, and can even be bounded in the case $d=1$. To achieve this, we establish a novel deterministic analogue of Beck's local-to-global principle (Ann. of Math. 1994), which relates the discrepancy of a Kronecker sequence to multiplicative diophantine approximation. This opens up a new avenue of attack for Littlewood's conjecture.

Abstract:An positive even number is said to be a Kronecker number if it can be written in infinitely many ways as the difference between two primes, and it is believed that all even numbers are Kronecker numbers. We will study the division and multiplication of Kronecker numbers to study the largeness of the set of Kronecker numbers. A numerical lower bound for the density Kronecker numbers among even numbers is given, and it is proved that there exists a computable constant $k$ and a set $D$ consisting of at most 720 computable Maillet numbers such that, for any integer $n$, $kn$ can be expressed as a product of a Kronecker number with a Maillet number in $D$. Meanwhile, it is proved that every positive rational number can be written as a ratio of two Kronecker numbers.

On the automaticity of the Hankel determinants of a family of automatic sequences

Abstract:<p>Hankel determinants and automatic sequences are two classical subjects widely studied in Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science. However, these two topics were considered totally independently, until in 1998, when Allouche, Peyrière, Wen and Wen proved that all the Hankel determinants of the Thue-Morse sequence are nonzero. This property allowed Bugeaud to prove that the irrationality exponents of the Thue-Morse-Mahler numbers are exactly 2. Since then, the Hankel determinants of several other automatic sequences, in particular, the paperfolding sequence, the Stern sequence, the period-doubling sequence, are studied by Coons, Vrbik, Guo, Wu, Wen, Bugeaud, Fu, Han, Fokkink, Kraaikamp, and Shallit. On the other hand, it is known that the Hankel determinants of a rational power series are ultimately zero, and the Hankel determinants of a quadratic power series over finite fields are ultimately periodic. It is therefore natural to ask if we can obtain similar results about the Hankel determinants of algebraic series. In the present paper, we provide a partial answer to this question by establishing the automaticity of the reduced Hankel determinants modulo 2 of a family of automatic sequences. As an application of our result, we give upper bounds for the irratoinality exponent of a family of automatic numbers.</p>

Beatty Sequences for a Quadratic Irrational: Decidability and Applications

Abstract:Let $\alpha$ and $\beta$ belong to the same quadratic field. We show that the inhomogeneous Beatty sequence $(\lfloor n \alpha + \beta \rfloor)_{n \geq 1}$ is synchronized, in the sense that there is a finite automaton that takes as input the Ostrowski representations of $n$ and $y$ in parallel, and accepts if and only if $y = \lfloor n \alpha + \beta \rfloor$. Since it is already known that the addition relation is computable for Ostrowski representations based on a quadratic number, a consequence is a new and rather simple proof that the first-order logical theory of these sequences with addition is decidable. The decision procedure is easily implemented in the free software Walnut.

Abstract:The Oldenburger–Kolakoski sequence is the only infinite sequence over the alphabet {1, 2} that starts with 1 and is its own run-length encoding. In the present work, we take a step back from this largely known and studied sequence by introducing some randomness in the choice of the letters written. This enables us to provide some results on the convergence of the density of 1's in the resulting sequence. When the choice of the letters is given by an infinite sequence of i.i.d. random variables or by a Markov chain, the average densities of letters converge. Moreover, in the case of i.i.d. random variables, we are able to prove that the densities even almost surely converge.

Abstract:We introduce an infinite family of Kronecker series twisted by characters. As an application, we give a closed formula for the sum of all Hecke eigenforms on ${\Gamma}_0(N) $ multiplied by their twisted period polynomials in terms of the product of those twisted Kronecker series, when N is square free. This extends an identity of Zagier among period polynomials, Hecke eigenforms and a quotient of Jacobi theta series.

Abstract:We estimate Gowers uniformity norms for some classical automatic sequences, such as the Thue-Morse and Rudin-Shapiro sequences. The methods can also be extended to other automatic sequences. As an application, we asymptotically count arithmetic progressions in the set of integers $\leq N$ where the Thue-Morse (resp. Rudin-Shapiro) sequence takes the value $+1$.

In this paper, we present a generic construction of [math]-ary sequences with period [math] based on the Euler quotient modulo [math], where [math] and [math] are odd primes satisfying that [math] divides [math] and [math] is any prime less than [math]. The minimal polynomial and the linear complexity of the proposed sequences are determined in most cases under the assumption that [math]. The result shows that each of the sequences has large linear complexity.

Abstract:Assume that $\alpha>1$ is an algebraic number and $\xi\neq0$ is a real number. We are concerned with the distribution of the fractional parts of the sequence $(\xi \alpha^{n})$. Under various Diophantine conditions on $\xi$ and $\alpha$, we obtain lower bounds on the number $n$ with $1\leq n\leq N $ for which the fractional part of the sequence $(\xi \alpha^{n})_{n\geq1}$ fall into a prescribed region $I\subset [0,1]$, extending several results in the literature. As an application, we show that the Fourier decay rate of some self-similar measures is logarithmic, generalizing a result of Varjú and Yu.
