Abstract:We define a flexible class of Riemmanian metrics on the three-torus. Then, using Stern's inequality relating scalar curvature to harmonic one-forms, we show that any sequence of metrics in this family whose negative part of the scalar curvature tends to zero in $L^2$ norm has a subsequence which converges to some flat metric on the three-torus in the sense of Dong-Song.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the stability of three - tori with small negative scalar curvature. Specifically, the author defines a class of Riemannian metrics on three - tori and uses the Stern inequality (an inequality that relates the scalar curvature to harmonic 1 - forms) to study whether these metrics will converge to flat metrics in some sense when the negative scalar curvature part of the metrics approaches zero in the \(L^2\) norm.
### Specific problem description
The core problems of the paper are to explore the following points:
1. **Existence of geometric limits**: For a specific class of Riemannian metrics, if the negative scalar curvature part of them approaches zero in the \(L^2\) norm, will these metrics converge to flat metrics in some sense?
2. **Stability**: How do these metrics behave when they are close to flat metrics? In particular, is there a way to strictly prove the convergence of these metrics in the Dong - Song sense?
### Main contributions of the paper
- **Introduction of a new metric family**: The author defines a class of Riemannian metrics that satisfy certain volume, scalar curvature and other geometric conditions.
- **Use of the Stern inequality**: Through the Stern inequality, the author is able to relate the scalar curvature to harmonic 1 - forms, thus providing a theoretical tool for studying the convergence of metrics.
- **Proof of convergence**: The author proves that under certain conditions, when the negative scalar curvature part of the metrics approaches zero in the \(L^2\) norm, these metrics will indeed converge to some flat metric.
### Mathematical expressions
The key mathematical formulas involved in the paper include:
- Stern inequality:
\[
2\pi\int_{S}\chi(\Sigma_{\theta})d\theta\geq\frac{1}{2}\int_{S}\int_{\Sigma_{\theta}}(|du|^{2}- 2|\nabla du|^{2}+R_{g})dA_{g}d\theta
\]
where \(R_{g}\) is the scalar curvature of the metric \(g\), and \(\chi(\Sigma_{\theta})\) is the Euler characteristic of the level set \(\Sigma_{\theta}=u^{-1}(\theta)\)
- Definition of the metric family:
\[
F(V, R,\Lambda,\eta,M)
\]
A metric family that satisfies the following conditions:
1. \(|T^{3}|_{g}\leq V\)
2. \(\|R_{g}\|_{L^{2}(g)}\leq R\)
3. \(IN_{1}(g)\geq\Lambda\)
4. \(\min\{\text{stabsys}_{1}(g),\text{stabsys}_{2}(g)\}\geq\sigma\)
5. \(\kappa(g,\eta)\leq M\)
Through these formulas and conditions, the author shows that when the negative scalar curvature part of the metrics approaches zero, the metrics will converge to flat metrics under specific conditions.
