Abstract:A knot in the 3-sphere is called an L--space knot if it admits a nontrivial Dehn surgery yielding an L--space. Like torus knots and Berge knots, many L--space knots admit also a Seifert fibered surgery. We give a concrete example of a hyperbolic, L-space knot which has no exceptional surgeries, in particular, no Seifert fibered surgeries.

Abstract:For a knot in the 3-sphere, the Upsilon invariant is a piecewise linear function defined on the interval [0,2]. For an L-space knot, the Upsilon invariant is determined only by the Alexander polynomial of the knot. We exhibit infinitely many pairs of hyperbolic L-space knots such that two knots of each pair have distinct Alexander polynomials, so they are not concordant, but share the same Upsilon invariant. Conversely, we examine the restorability of the Alexander polynomial of an L-space knot from the Upsilon invariant through the Legendre-Fenchel transformation.

Abstract:Continuing the work of Zemke, Livingston and Allen, we consider when linear combinations of torus knots are concordant to $L$-space knots. We begin by proving Allen's conjecture for alternating torus knots. That is, we prove that a linear combination of alternating torus knots is concordant to an $L$-space knot if and only if the connected sum is a single torus knot. Then we establish a necessary condition for when a linear combination of torus knots is concordant to an $L$-space knot.

$L$-space knots with positive surgeries that are not weakly symplectically fillable

Abstract:In this paper we discuss a general strategy to detect the absence of weakly symplectic fillings of $L$-spaces. We start from a generic $L$-space knot and consider (positive) Dehn surgeries on it. We compute, using arithmetic data depending only on the knot type and the surgery coefficient, the value of the relevant geometric invariants used to obstruct fillability. We also provide a new example of an infinite family of hyperbolic $L$-spaces that do not admit weakly symplectic fillings. These are manifolds that lie inside $\{\text{Tight}\}$ but not inside $\{\text{Weakly Fillable}\}$.

Abstract:We present two examples of strongly invertible L-space knots whose surgeries are never the double branched cover of a Khovanov thin link in the 3-sphere. Consequently, these knots provide counterexamples to a conjectural characterization of strongly invertible L-space knots due to Watson. We also discuss other exceptional properties of these two knots, for example, these two L-space knots have formal semigroups that are actual semigroups.

Abstract:The Upsilon invariant of a knot is a concordance invariant derived from knot Floer homology theory. It is a piecewise linear continuous function defined on the interval $[0,2]$. Borodzik and Hedden gave a question asking for which knots the Upsilon invariant is a convex function. It is known that the Upsilon invariant of any $L$-space knot, and a Floer thin knot after taking its mirror image, if necessary, as well, is convex. Also, we can make infinitely many knots whose Upsilon invariants are convex by the connected sum operation. In this paper, we construct infinitely many mutually non-concordant hyperbolic knots whose Upsilon invariants are convex. To calculate the full knot Floer complex, we make use of a combinatorial method for $(1,1)$-knots.

Abstract:We use Dehn surgery methods to construct infinite families of hyperbolic knots in the 3-sphere satisfying a weak form of the Turaev--Viro invariants volume conjecture. The results have applications to a conjecture of Andersen, Masbaum, and Ueno about quantum representations of surface mapping class groups. We obtain an explicit family of pseudo-Anosov mapping classes acting on surfaces of any genus and with one boundary component that satisfy the conjecture.

Abstract:For any alternating knot, it is known that the double branched cover of the $3$-sphere branched over the knot is an $L$-space. We show that the three-fold cyclic branched cover is also an $L$-space for any genus one alternating knot.

Abstract:Heegaard Floer homology and knot Floer homology are powerful invariants of 3-manifolds and links respectively. L-space knots are knots which admit Dehn surgeries to 3-manifolds with Heegaard Floer homology of minimal rank. In this paper we study almost L-space knots, which are knots admitting large Dehn surgeries to 3-manifolds with Heegaard Floer homology of next-to-minimal rank. Our main result is a classification of the $CFK^\infty$ type of almost L-space knots. As corollaries we show that almost L-space knots satisfy various topological properties, including some given by Baldwin-Sivek. We also give some new cable link detection results.

Abstract:It is conjectured that a hyperbolic knot admits at most three Dehn surgeries which yield closed three manifolds containing incompressible tori. We show that there exist infinitely many hyperbolic knots which attain the conjectural maximum number. Interestingly, those surgeries correspond to consecutive integers.

Abstract:By examining the homology groups of a 4-manifold associated to an integral surgery on a knot $K$ in a rational homology 3-sphere $Y$ yielding a rational homology 3-sphere $Y^*$ with surgery dual knot $K^*$, we show that the subgroups generated by $[K]$ and $[K^*]$ in $H_1(Y)$ and $H_1(Y^*)$, respectively, have co-prime orders. We obtain an immediate corollary that, in conjunction with an argument of Lidman and Moore, proves the cosmetic crossing conjecture for knots whose branched double covers are Heegaard Floer L-spaces.

Abstract:There has been a great deal of interest in understanding which knots are characterized by which of their Dehn surgeries. We study a 4-dimensional version of this question: which knots are determined by which of their traces? We prove several results that are in stark contrast with what is known about characterizing surgeries, most notably that the 0-trace detects every L-space knot. Our proof combines tools in Heegaard Floer homology with results about surface homeomorphisms and their dynamics. We also consider nonzero traces, proving for instance that each positive torus knot is determined by its $n$-trace for any $n\leq 0$, whereas no non-positive integer is known to be a characterizing slope for any positive torus knot besides the right-handed trefoil.

Abstract:Using Xu's conjugacy algorithm on the braid group B-3 [6,31] and the hyperbolicity criterion of 3-braid links by Futer-Kalfagianni-Purcell [14], we classify Lorenz knots of trip number 3 into torus knots and hyperbolic knots.Moreover, we provide another approach to this problem. Modulo a conjectural pseudo-Anosov criterion, we can also classify Lorenz knots of trip number 3 based upon the Dehornoy floor theory. Abstract:In this note, we show that if there is a knot in $S^3$ having $\mathbb{Z}_m$ torsion in its Khovanov homology, then there are infinitely many hyperbolic knots and infinitely many prime satellite knots having $\mathbb{Z}_m$ torsion in their Khovanov homology. As an application, we give the first known examples of hyperbolic knots and links with odd (and other non-$\mathbb{Z}_2$ torsion) in their Khovanov homology.

Abstract:We study positive braid knots (the knots in the three-sphere realized as positive braid closures) through the lens of the L-space conjecture. This conjecture predicts that if $K$ is a non-trivial positive braid knot, then for all $r < 2g(K)-1$, the 3-manifold obtained via $r$-framed Dehn surgery along $K$ admits a taut foliation. Our main result provides some positive evidence towards this conjecture: we construct taut foliations in such manifolds whenever $r<g(K)+1$. As an application, we produce a novel braid positivity obstruction for cable knots by proving that the $(n,\pm 1)$-cable of a knot $K$ is braid positive if and only if $K$ is the unknot. We also present some curious examples demonstrating the limitations of our construction; these examples can also be viewed as providing some negative evidence towards the L-space conjecture. Finally, we apply our main result to produce taut foliations in some splicings of knot exteriors.

Abstract:Closed 3$$3$$-string braids admit many bandings to two-bridge links. By way of the Montesinos Trick, this allows us to construct infinite families of knots in the connected sum of lens spaces L(r,1)#L(s,1)$$L(r,1) \# L(s,1)$$ that admit a surgery to a lens space for all pairs of integers (r,s)$$(r,s)$$ except (0,0)$$(0,0)$$. These knots are typically hyperbolic. We also demonstrate that the previously known two families of examples of hyperbolic knots in non-prime manifolds with lens space surgeries of Eudave-Muñoz–Wu and Kang all fit this construction. As such, we propose a generalization of the cabling conjecture of González-Acuña–Short for knots in lens spaces.

Abstract:In an earlier paper, we used the absolute grading on Heegaard Floer homology to give restrictions on knots in $S^3$ which admit lens space surgeries. The aim of the present article is to exhibit stronger restrictions on such knots, arising from knot Floer homology. One consequence is that all the non-zero coefficients of the Alexander polynomial of such a knot are $\pm 1$. This information in turn can be used to prove that certain lens spaces are not obtained as integral surgeries on knots. In fact, combining our results with constructions of Berge, we classify lens spaces $L(p,q)$ which arise as integral surgeries on knots in $S^3$ with $|p|\leq 1500$. Other applications include bounds on the four-ball genera of knots admitting lens space surgeries (which are sharp for Berge's knots), and a constraint on three-manifolds obtained as integer surgeries on alternating knots, which is closely to related to a theorem of Delman and Roberts.
