Abstract:For any alternating knot, it is known that the double branched cover of the $3$-sphere branched over the knot is an $L$-space. We show that the three-fold cyclic branched cover is also an $L$-space for any genus one alternating knot.

Abstract:Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications, Ahead of Print. Let [math] be a tame knot and consider an [math] beaded necklace [math] which is the union of [math] consecutive disjoint closed round balls (pearls) [math], [math]. An [math] pearl chain necklace [math] is the union of [math] and [math]. We will construct, via the action of a Kleinian group, a sequence of nested pearl chain necklaces [math] whose inverse limit is a wild knot of dynamically defined type [math]. In this paper, we will prove some topological properties of this kind of wild knots; in particular, we generalize the construction of cyclic branched coverings for this case, and we show that there exists a wild knot of dynamically defined type such that [math] is an [math]-fold cyclic branched covering of [math] along it, for [math].

Abstract:This article presents an alternate way to prove a result originally proven by Harvey, Kawamuro, and Plamenvskaya in \cite{HaKaPl}. We accomplish this by explicitly constructing an overtwisted disk in the $p$-fold cyclic branched cover of $S^3$ with the standard contact structure branched along a carefully selected transverse knot. Furthermore, by utilizing this construction of the overtwisted disk, we can see that the overtwisted disk is contained in the complement of the branch locus.

Abstract:In this paper we study the connections between cyclic presentations of groups and branched cyclic coverings of (1,1)-knots. In particular, we prove that every n-fold strongly-cyclic branched covering of a (1,1)-knot admits a cyclic presentation for the fundamental group encoded by a Heegaard diagram of genus n.

Abstract:Surgery on a knot in $S^3$ is said to be an alternating surgery if it yields the double branched cover of an alternating link. The main theoretical contribution is to show that the set of alternating surgery slopes is algorithmically computable and to establish several structural results. Furthermore, we calculate the set of alternating surgery slopes for many examples of knots, including all hyperbolic knots in the SnapPy census. These examples exhibit several interesting phenomena including strongly invertible knots with a unique alternating surgery and asymmetric knots with two alternating surgery slopes. We also establish upper bounds on the set of alternating surgeries, showing that an alternating surgery slope on a hyperbolic knot satisfies $|p/q| \leq 3g(K)+4$. Notably, this bound applies to lens space surgeries, thereby strengthening the known genus bounds from the conjecture of Goda and Teragaito.

Abstract:By examining the homology groups of a 4-manifold associated to an integral surgery on a knot $K$ in a rational homology 3-sphere $Y$ yielding a rational homology 3-sphere $Y^*$ with surgery dual knot $K^*$, we show that the subgroups generated by $[K]$ and $[K^*]$ in $H_1(Y)$ and $H_1(Y^*)$, respectively, have co-prime orders. We obtain an immediate corollary that, in conjunction with an argument of Lidman and Moore, proves the cosmetic crossing conjecture for knots whose branched double covers are Heegaard Floer L-spaces.
Concordances of sums of alternating torus knots and their mirrors to $L$-space knots

Abstract:Continuing the work of Zemke, Livingston and Allen, we consider when linear combinations of torus knots are concordant to $L$-space knots. We begin by proving Allen's conjecture for alternating torus knots. That is, we prove that a linear combination of alternating torus knots is concordant to an $L$-space knot if and only if the connected sum is a single torus knot. Then we establish a necessary condition for when a linear combination of torus knots is concordant to an $L$-space knot.

Abstract:Closed 3$$3$$-string braids admit many bandings to two-bridge links. By way of the Montesinos Trick, this allows us to construct infinite families of knots in the connected sum of lens spaces L(r,1)#L(s,1)$$L(r,1) \# L(s,1)$$ that admit a surgery to a lens space for all pairs of integers (r,s)$$(r,s)$$ except (0,0)$$(0,0)$$. These knots are typically hyperbolic. We also demonstrate that the previously known two families of examples of hyperbolic knots in non-prime manifolds with lens space surgeries of Eudave-Muñoz–Wu and Kang all fit this construction. As such, we propose a generalization of the cabling conjecture of González-Acuña–Short for knots in lens spaces.

Quasi-alternating surgeries

Abstract:In this article, we explore phenomena relating to quasi-alternating surgeries on knots, where a quasi-alternating surgery on a knot is a Dehn surgery yielding the double branched cover of a quasi-alternating link. Since the double branched cover of a quasi-alternating link is an L-space, quasi-alternating surgeries are special examples of L-space surgeries. We show that all SnapPy census L-space knots admit quasi-alternating surgeries except for the knots t09847 and o9_30634 which both do not have any quasi-alternating surgeries. In particular, this finishes Dunfield's classification of the L-space knots among all SnapPy census knots. In addition, we show that all asymmetric census L-space knots have exactly two quasi-alternating slopes that are consecutive integers. Similar behavior is observed for some of the Baker-Luecke asymmetric L-space knots. We also classify the quasi-alternating surgeries on torus knots and explore briefly the notion of formal L-space surgeries. This allows us to give examples of asymmetric formal L-spaces.

Abstract:We provide an alternative proof of a sufficient condition for the fundamental group of the $n^{th}$ cyclic branched cover of $S^3$ along a prime knot $K$ to be left-orderable, which is originally due to Boyer-Gordon-Watson. As an application of this sufficient condition, we show that for any $(p,q)$ two-bridge knot, with $p\equiv 3 \text{ mod } 4$, there are only finitely many cyclic branched covers whose fundamental groups are not left-orderable. This answers a question posed by D{\c a}bkowski, Przytycki and Togha.

Abstract:A knot in the 3-sphere is called an L--space knot if it admits a nontrivial Dehn surgery yielding an L--space. Like torus knots and Berge knots, many L--space knots admit also a Seifert fibered surgery. We give a concrete example of a hyperbolic, L-space knot which has no exceptional surgeries, in particular, no Seifert fibered surgeries.

Abstract:We study the left-orderability of the fundamental groups of cyclic branched covers of links which admit co-oriented taut foliations. In particular we do this for cyclic branched covers of fibred knots in integer homology 3 3 -spheres and cyclic branched covers of closed braids. The latter allows us to complete the proof of the L-space conjecture for closed, connected, orientable, irreducible 3 3 -manifolds containing a genus one fibred knot. We also prove that the universal abelian cover of a manifold obtained by generic Dehn surgery on a hyperbolic fibred knot in an integer homology 3 3 -sphere admits a co-oriented taut foliation and has left-orderable fundamental group, even if the surgered manifold does not, and that the same holds for many branched covers of satellite knots with braided patterns. A key fact used in our proofs is that the Euler class of a universal circle representation associated to a co-oriented taut foliation coincides with the Euler class of the foliation’s tangent bundle. Though known to experts, no proof of this important result has appeared in the literature. We provide such a proof in the paper.

Abstract:We consider closed orientable 3-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds which are cyclic branched coverings of the 3-sphere, with branching set being a two-bridge knot (or link). We establish two-sided linear bounds depending on the order of the covering for the Matveev complexity of the covering manifold. The lower estimate uses the hyperbolic volume and results of Cao-Meyerhoff and Gueritaud-Futer (who recently improved previous work of Lackenby), while the upper estimate is based on an explicit triangulation, which also allows us to give a bound on the Delzant T-invariant of the fundamental group of the manifold.

Abstract:In this article we show that all cyclic branched covers of a Seifert link have left-orderable fundamental groups, and therefore admit co-oriented taut foliations and are not $L$-spaces, if and only if it is not an $ADE$ link up to orientation. This leads to a proof of the $ADE$ link conjecture for Seifert links. When $L$ is an $ADE$ link up to orientation, we determine which of its canonical $n$-fold cyclic branched covers $\Sigma_n(L)$ have non-left-orderable fundamental groups. In addition, we give a topological proof of Ishikawa's classification of strongly quasipositive Seifert links and we determine the Seifert links that are definite, resp. have genus zero, resp. have genus equal to its smooth $4$-ball genus, among others. In the last section, we provide a comprehensive survey of the current knowledge and results concerning the $ADE$ link conjecture.

Abstract:Let $K\subset S^3$ be a knot and $\eta, \gamma \subset S^3\backslash K$ be simple closed curves. Denote by $\Sigma_q(K)$ the $q$-fold cyclic branched cover of $K$. We give an explicit formula for computing the linking numbers between lifts of $\eta$ and $\gamma$ to $\Sigma_q(K)$. As an application, we evaluate, in a variety of cases, an obstruction to satellite operations inducing homomorphisms on smooth concordance.

Abstract:Heegaard Floer homology and knot Floer homology are powerful invariants of 3-manifolds and links respectively. L-space knots are knots which admit Dehn surgeries to 3-manifolds with Heegaard Floer homology of minimal rank. In this paper we study almost L-space knots, which are knots admitting large Dehn surgeries to 3-manifolds with Heegaard Floer homology of next-to-minimal rank. Our main result is a classification of the $CFK^\infty$ type of almost L-space knots. As corollaries we show that almost L-space knots satisfy various topological properties, including some given by Baldwin-Sivek. We also give some new cable link detection results.
