Abstract:We consider satellite operators where the corresponding 2-component link is an L-space link. This family includes many commonly studied satellite operators, including cabling operators, the Whitehead operator, and a family of Mazur operators. We give a formula which computes the knot Floer complex of a satellite of $K$ in terms of the knot Floer complex of $K$. Our main tools are the Heegaard Floer Dehn surgery formulas and their refinements. A key step in our computation is a proof that 2-component L-space links have formal knot Floer complexes. We use this to show that the link Floer complexes of 2-component L-space links are determined by their multivariable Alexander polynomials. We implement our satellite formula in Python code, which we also make available.

Abstract:Given an $n$-component link $L$ in any 3-manifold $M$, the space $\mathcal{L} \subset (\mathbb{Q}\cup \mkern-1.5mu\{\infty\})^n$ of rational surgery slopes yielding L-spaces is already fully characterized (in joint work by the author) when $n\!=\!1$ and $\mathcal{L}$ is nontrivial. For $n\mkern-2mu>\mkern-3mu1$, however, there are no previous results for $\mathcal{L}$ as a rational subspace, and only limited results for integer surgeries $\mathcal{L}\cap\mathbb{Z}^n$ on $S^3\mkern-2mu$. Herein, we provide the first nontrivial explicit descriptions of $\mathcal{L}$ for rational surgeries on multi-component links. Generalizing Hedden's and Hom's L-space result for cables, we compute both $\mathcal{L}$, and its topology, for all satellites by torus-links in $S^3\mkern-2mu$. For fractal-boundaried $\mathcal{L}$ resulting from satellites by algebraic links or iterated torus links, we develop arbitrarily precise approximation tools. We also extend the provisional validity of the L-space conjecture for rational surgeries on a knot $K \subset S^3$ to rational surgeries on such satellite-links of $K$. These results exploit the author's generalized Jankins-Neumann formula for graph manifolds.

Abstract:We get a necessary condition under which a nonsimple knot (i.e. a satellite knot) admits a nontrivial surgery producing a lens space. Interesting corollaries are: (1) if a lens space can be obtained from a nontrivial surgery on a nonsimple knot, then the order of its fundamental group is not smaller than 23; (2) any nonsimple knot admits at most one nontrivial surgery which produces a lens space.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss a general strategy to detect the absence of weakly symplectic fillings of $L$-spaces. We start from a generic $L$-space knot and consider (positive) Dehn surgeries on it. We compute, using arithmetic data depending only on the knot type and the surgery coefficient, the value of the relevant geometric invariants used to obstruct fillability. We also provide a new example of an infinite family of hyperbolic $L$-spaces that do not admit weakly symplectic fillings. These are manifolds that lie inside $\{\text{Tight}\}$ but not inside $\{\text{Weakly Fillable}\}$.

Homomorphism obstructions for satellite maps

Abstract:A knot in a solid torus defines a map on the set of (smooth or topological) concordance classes of knots in S 3 S^3 . This set admits a group structure, but a conjecture of Hedden suggests that satellite maps never induce interesting homomorphisms: we give new evidence for this conjecture in both categories. First, we use Casson-Gordon signatures to give the first obstruction to a slice pattern inducing a homomorphism on the topological concordance group, constructing examples with every winding number besides ± 1 \pm 1 . We then provide subtle examples of satellite maps which map arbitrarily deep into the n n -solvable filtration of Cochran, Orr, and Teichner [Ann. of Math. (2) 157 (2003), pp. 433–519], act like homomorphisms on arbitrary finite sets of knots, and yet which still do not induce homomorphisms. Finally, we verify Hedden’s conjecture in the smooth category for all small crossing number satellite operators but one.

Iterated satellite operators on the knot concordance group

Abstract:We show that for a winding number zero satellite operator $P$ on the knot concordance group, if the axis of $P$ has nontrivial self-pairing under the Blanchfield form of the pattern, then the image of the iteration $P^n$ generates an infinite rank subgroup for each $n$. Furthermore, the graded quotients of the filtration of the knot concordance group associated with $P$ have infinite rank at all levels. This gives an affirmative answer to a question of Hedden and Pinzón-Caicedo in many cases. We also show that under the same hypotheses, $P^n$ is not a homomorphism on the knot concordance group for each $n$. We use amenable $L^2$-signatures to prove these results.

Abstract:We describe a new method for computing the $UV = 0$ knot Floer complex of a satellite knot given the $UV = 0$ knot Floer complex for the companion and a doubly pointed bordered Heegaard diagram for the pattern, showing that the complex for the satellite can be computed from an immersed doubly pointed Heegaard diagram obtained from the Heegaard diagram for the pattern by overlaying the immersed curve representing the complex for the companion. This method streamlines the usual bordered Floer method of tensoring with a bimodule associated to the pattern by giving an immersed curve interpretation of that pairing, and computing the module from the immersed diagram is often easier than computing the relevant bordered bimodule. In particular, for (1,1) patterns the resulting immersed diagram is genus one, and thus the computation is combinatorial. For (1,1) patterns this generalizes previous work of the first author which showed that such immersed Heegaard diagram computes the $V=0$ knot Floer complex of the satellite. As a key technical step, which is of independent interest, we extend the construction of a bigraded complex from a doubly pointed Heegaard diagram and of an extended type D structure from a torus-boundary bordered Heegaard diagram to allow Heegaard diagrams containing an immersed alpha curve.

Abstract:We study a family of $(1,1)$-pattern knots that generalize the Mazur pattern, and compute the concordance invariants $\tau$ and $\epsilon$ of $n$-twisted satellites formed from these patterns. We show that none of the $n$-twisted patterns from this family act surjectively on the smooth or rational concordance group. We also determine when the $n$-twisted generalized Mazur patterns are fibered in the solid torus, compute their genus in $S^1 \times D^2$, and show that $n$-twisted satellites with generalized Mazur patterns and non-trivial companions are not Floer thin.

Abstract:We show that a large class of satellite operators are rank‐expanding; that is, they map some rank‐one subgroup of the concordance group onto an infinite linearly independent set. Our work constitutes the first systematic study of this property in the literature and partially affirms a conjecture of the second author and Pinzón‐Caicedo. More generally, we establish a Floer‐theoretic condition for a family of companion knots to have infinite‐rank image under satellites from this class. The methods we use are amenable to patterns that act trivially in topological concordance and are capable of handling a surprisingly wide variety of companions. For instance, we give an infinite linearly independent family of Whitehead doubles whose companion knots all have negative τ ‐invariant. Our results also recover and extend several theorems in this area established using instanton Floer homology.

Abstract:A knot in the 3-sphere is called an L--space knot if it admits a nontrivial Dehn surgery yielding an L--space. Like torus knots and Berge knots, many L--space knots admit also a Seifert fibered surgery. We give a concrete example of a hyperbolic, L-space knot which has no exceptional surgeries, in particular, no Seifert fibered surgeries.

Abstract:We present two examples of strongly invertible L-space knots whose surgeries are never the double branched cover of a Khovanov thin link in the 3-sphere. Consequently, these knots provide counterexamples to a conjectural characterization of strongly invertible L-space knots due to Watson. We also discuss other exceptional properties of these two knots, for example, these two L-space knots have formal semigroups that are actual semigroups.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that the Gluck twist of certain satellite $2$-knots in a $4$-manifold do not change the diffeomorphism type in three different ways: one is directly from the definition of the satellite $2$-knot, and the other two are by finding an equivalent description of the satellite $2$-knot. Furthermore, using the new description, we gave infinite number of new examples of $2$-knots which are unknotted by connected summing a single standard real projective plane.

Abstract:In ``Knots in lattice homology", Ozsváth, Stipsicz, and Szabó showed that knot lattice homology satisfies a surgery formula similar to the one relating knot Floer homology and Heegaard Floer homology, and in previous work, I showed that knot lattice homology is the persistent homology of a doubly filtered space. Here I provide an iterable version of the surgery formula that, provided the initial knot lattice space with flip map, produces a space isomorphic as a doubly-filtered space to the corresponding knot lattice space for the dual knot with the corresponding flip map. If we include the involutive data for the original knot and ambient three-manifold, we can also produce the corresponding involutive data on the new knot lattice space without assuming that the original three-manifold is an $L$-space. I construct $\infty$-categories where these operations are functorial. Finally, I use the surgery formula to compute some examples of knot lattice spaces including for the regular fiber of $\Sigma(2,3,7)$ and for a knot in a three-manifold that is not given by an almost rational graph.

Abstract:We show that if KK is a satellite knot in the 3-sphere S3S^3 which admits a generalized cosmetic crossing change of order qq with ‖q‖≥6\|q\| \geq 6, then KK admits a pattern knot with a generalized cosmetic crossing change of the same order. As a consequence of this, we find that any prime satellite knot in S3S^3 which admits a torus knot as a pattern cannot admit a generalized cosmetic crossing change of order qq with ‖q‖≥6\|q\| \geq 6. We also show that if there is any knot in S3S^3 admitting a generalized cosmetic crossing change of order qq with ‖q‖≥6\|q\| \geq 6, then there must be such a knot which is hyperbolic.

Abstract:We use bordered Floer theory to study properties of twisted Mazur pattern satellite knots $Q_{n}(K)$. We prove that $Q_n(K)$ is not Floer homologically thin, with two exceptions. We calculate the 3-genus of $Q_{n}(K)$ in terms of the twisting parameter $n$ and the 3-genus of the companion $K$, and we determine when $Q_n(K)$ is fibered. As an application to our results on Floer thickness and 3-genus, we verify the Cosmetic Surgery Conjecture for many of these satellite knots.

Abstract:In this article, we apply slope detection techniques to study properties of toroidal $3$-manifolds obtained by performing Dehn surgeries on satellite knots in the context of the $L$-space conjecture. We show that if $K$ is an $L$-space knot or admits an irreducible rational surgery with non-left-orderable fundamental group, then the JSJ graph of its exterior is a rooted interval. Consequently, any rational surgery on a composite knot has a left-orderable fundamental group. This is the left-orderable counterpart of Krcatovich's result on the primeness of $L$-space knots, which we reprove using our methods. Analogous results on the existence of co-orientable taut foliations are proved when the knot has a fibred companion. Our results suggest a new approach to establishing the counterpart of Krcatovich's result for surgeries with co-orientable taut foliations, on which partial results have been achieved by Delman and Roberts. Finally, we prove results on left-orderable $p/q$-surgeries on knots with $p$ small.

Abstract:The construction of knots via annular twisting has been used to create families of knots yielding the same manifold via Dehn surgery. Prior examples have all involved Dehn surgery where the surgery slope is an integral multiple of 2. In this note we prove that for any integer $n$ there exist infinitely many different knots in $S^3$ such that $n$-surgery on those knots yields the same manifold. In particular, when $|n|=1$ homology spheres arise from these surgeries. In addition, when $n \neq 0$ the bridge numbers of the knots constructed tend to infinity as the number of twists along the annulus increases.
