Abstract:A knot in a solid torus defines a map on the set of (smooth or topological) concordance classes of knots in S 3 S^3 . This set admits a group structure, but a conjecture of Hedden suggests that satellite maps never induce interesting homomorphisms: we give new evidence for this conjecture in both categories. First, we use Casson-Gordon signatures to give the first obstruction to a slice pattern inducing a homomorphism on the topological concordance group, constructing examples with every winding number besides ± 1 \pm 1 . We then provide subtle examples of satellite maps which map arbitrarily deep into the n n -solvable filtration of Cochran, Orr, and Teichner [Ann. of Math. (2) 157 (2003), pp. 433–519], act like homomorphisms on arbitrary finite sets of knots, and yet which still do not induce homomorphisms. Finally, we verify Hedden’s conjecture in the smooth category for all small crossing number satellite operators but one.

Iterated satellite operators on the knot concordance group

Abstract:We show that for a winding number zero satellite operator $P$ on the knot concordance group, if the axis of $P$ has nontrivial self-pairing under the Blanchfield form of the pattern, then the image of the iteration $P^n$ generates an infinite rank subgroup for each $n$. Furthermore, the graded quotients of the filtration of the knot concordance group associated with $P$ have infinite rank at all levels. This gives an affirmative answer to a question of Hedden and Pinzón-Caicedo in many cases. We also show that under the same hypotheses, $P^n$ is not a homomorphism on the knot concordance group for each $n$. We use amenable $L^2$-signatures to prove these results.

Abstract:We describe a new method for computing the $UV = 0$ knot Floer complex of a satellite knot given the $UV = 0$ knot Floer complex for the companion and a doubly pointed bordered Heegaard diagram for the pattern, showing that the complex for the satellite can be computed from an immersed doubly pointed Heegaard diagram obtained from the Heegaard diagram for the pattern by overlaying the immersed curve representing the complex for the companion. This method streamlines the usual bordered Floer method of tensoring with a bimodule associated to the pattern by giving an immersed curve interpretation of that pairing, and computing the module from the immersed diagram is often easier than computing the relevant bordered bimodule. In particular, for (1,1) patterns the resulting immersed diagram is genus one, and thus the computation is combinatorial. For (1,1) patterns this generalizes previous work of the first author which showed that such immersed Heegaard diagram computes the $V=0$ knot Floer complex of the satellite. As a key technical step, which is of independent interest, we extend the construction of a bigraded complex from a doubly pointed Heegaard diagram and of an extended type D structure from a torus-boundary bordered Heegaard diagram to allow Heegaard diagrams containing an immersed alpha curve.

Abstract:We study a family of $(1,1)$-pattern knots that generalize the Mazur pattern, and compute the concordance invariants $\tau$ and $\epsilon$ of $n$-twisted satellites formed from these patterns. We show that none of the $n$-twisted patterns from this family act surjectively on the smooth or rational concordance group. We also determine when the $n$-twisted generalized Mazur patterns are fibered in the solid torus, compute their genus in $S^1 \times D^2$, and show that $n$-twisted satellites with generalized Mazur patterns and non-trivial companions are not Floer thin.

Abstract:We show that a large class of satellite operators are rank‐expanding; that is, they map some rank‐one subgroup of the concordance group onto an infinite linearly independent set. Our work constitutes the first systematic study of this property in the literature and partially affirms a conjecture of the second author and Pinzón‐Caicedo. More generally, we establish a Floer‐theoretic condition for a family of companion knots to have infinite‐rank image under satellites from this class. The methods we use are amenable to patterns that act trivially in topological concordance and are capable of handling a surprisingly wide variety of companions. For instance, we give an infinite linearly independent family of Whitehead doubles whose companion knots all have negative τ ‐invariant. Our results also recover and extend several theorems in this area established using instanton Floer homology.

Abstract:We prove formulae for the $\mathbb{F}_2$-Rasmussen invariant of satellite knots of patterns with wrapping number 2, using the multicurve technology for Khovanov and Bar-Natan homology developed by Kotelskiy, Watson, and the second author. A new concordance homomorphism, which is independent of the Rasmussen invariant, plays a central role in these formulae. We also explore whether similar formulae hold for the Ozsváth-Szabó invariant $\tau$.

Abstract:Generalizing prior work of Levine, we give infinitely many examples of pattern knots P such that P(K) is not slice in any rational homology 4-ball, for any companion knot K. To show this, we establish a closed formula for the concordance invariants tau and epsilon of a family of satellite knots obtained from generalized Mazur patterns. Our main computational tool is the immersed curve technique from bordered Heegaard Floer homology arising from the work of Chen-Hanselman.

Abstract:Scannell and Sinha considered a spectral sequence to calculate the rational homotopy groups of spaces of long knots in n-dimensional Euclidean space, for n greater than or equal to 4. At the end of their paper they conjecture that when n is odd, the terms on the antidiagonal on the second page precisely give the space of primitive Feynman diagrams related to the theory of Vassiliev invariants. In this paper we prove that conjecture. This has the application that the path components of the terms of the Taylor tower for the space of classical long knots are in one-to-one correspondence with quotients of the module of Feynman diagrams, even though the Taylor tower does not actually converge. This provides strong evidence that the stages of the Taylor tower give rise to universal Vassiliev knot invariants in each degree.

Abstract:In 2009, Calegari constructed smooth homotopy 4-spheres from monodromies of fibered knots. We prove that all these are diffeomorphic to the standard 4-sphere. Our method uses 5-dimensional handlebody techniques and results on mapping class groups of 3-dimensional handlebodies. As an application, we present potential counterexamples to the smooth 4-dimensional Schoenflies conjecture which are related to the work of Casson and Gordon on fibered ribbon knots.

Abstract:Let $K\subset S^3$ be a knot and $\eta, \gamma \subset S^3\backslash K$ be simple closed curves. Denote by $\Sigma_q(K)$ the $q$-fold cyclic branched cover of $K$. We give an explicit formula for computing the linking numbers between lifts of $\eta$ and $\gamma$ to $\Sigma_q(K)$. As an application, we evaluate, in a variety of cases, an obstruction to satellite operations inducing homomorphisms on smooth concordance.

Abstract:We describe a simple formula for computing the Heegaard Floer multicurve invariant of double tangles from the Heegaard Floer multicurve invariant of knot complements. A comparison with a similar multicurve invariant for Conway tangles in the setting of Khovanov homology confirms that knot Floer homology and Khovanov homology behave very differently under satellite operations, echoing recent observations from <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2208.13612" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2208.13612">arXiv:2208.13612</a>. We also obtain a new characterisation of L-space knots in terms of Heegaard Floer A-link satellites. Along the way, we find the first example of a satellite knot whose knot Floer homology is thin.

Abstract:Abstract Mutant knots, in the sense of Conway, are known to share the same Homfly polynomial. Their 2-string satellites also share the same Homfly polynomial, but in general their m -string satellites can have different Homfly polynomials for m > 2. We show that, under conditions of extra symmetry on the constituent 2-tangles, the directed m -string satellites of mutants share the same Homfly polynomial for m < 6 in general, and for all choices of m when the satellite is based on a cable knot pattern. We give examples of mutants with extra symmetry whose Homfly polynomials of some 6-string satellites are different, by comparing their quantum sl (3) invariants.

Abstract:We use bordered Floer theory to study properties of twisted Mazur pattern satellite knots $Q_{n}(K)$. We prove that $Q_n(K)$ is not Floer homologically thin, with two exceptions. We calculate the 3-genus of $Q_{n}(K)$ in terms of the twisting parameter $n$ and the 3-genus of the companion $K$, and we determine when $Q_n(K)$ is fibered. As an application to our results on Floer thickness and 3-genus, we verify the Cosmetic Surgery Conjecture for many of these satellite knots.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that the Gluck twist of certain satellite $2$-knots in a $4$-manifold do not change the diffeomorphism type in three different ways: one is directly from the definition of the satellite $2$-knot, and the other two are by finding an equivalent description of the satellite $2$-knot. Furthermore, using the new description, we gave infinite number of new examples of $2$-knots which are unknotted by connected summing a single standard real projective plane.

Abstract:We establish a pseudoisotopy result for embedding spaces in the line of that of Weiss and Williams for diffeomorphism groups. In other words, for $P\subset M$ a codimension at least three embedding, we describe the difference in a range of homotopical degrees between the spaces of block and ordinary embeddings of $P$ into $M$ as a certain infinite loop space involving the relative algebraic $K$-theory of the pair $(M,M-P)$. This range of degrees is the so-called concordance embedding stable range, which, by recent developments of Goodwillie-Krannich-Kupers, is far beyond that of the aforementioned theorem of Weiss-Williams.

Abstract:We give a recursive construction of the categorified Young symmetrizer introduced by Abel-Hogancamp in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1510.05330" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1510.05330">arXiv:1510.05330</a> corresponding to the single-column partition. As a consequence, we obtain new expressions for the uncolored $y$-ified HOMFLYPT homology of positive torus links and the $y$-ified column-colored HOMFLYPT homology of positive torus knots. We study the structure of the augmented fundamental quandle of a knot whose complement contains an incompressible torus. We obtain the relationship between the fundamental quandle of a satellite knot and the fundamental quandles/groups of its companion and pattern knots. General presentations of the fundamental quandles of a link in a solid torus, a link in a lens space and a satellite knot are described. In the last part of this paper, an algebraic approach to the study of affine quandles is presented and some known results about the Alexander module and quandle colorings are obtained.

Abstract:We further study the symplectic Khovanov homology of Seidel and Smith and its generalization to even tangles. This homology theory is a conjectural geometric model for Khovanov homology. In this paper we uncover structures on symplectic Khovanov homology which have analogues in Khovanov homology. To each elementary (as well as minimal) cobordism between two tangles we associate a homomorphism between the symplectic Khovanov homology groups of the two tangles. We define the symplectic analogues $H_{s}^m$ of Khovanov's arc algebras and equip the symplectic Khovanov homology of an $(m,n)$-tangle with the structure of an $(H_{s}^m,H_{s}^n)$-bimodule. We show that $H_{s}^m$ and Khovanov's $H^m$ are isomorphic as associative algebras over $\Z/2$. We also obtain a skein exact triangle for symplectic Khovanov homology which resembles the one for Khovanov homology.
