Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite almost simple group with socle $G_0$. In this paper we prove that whenever $G/G_0$ is abelian, then there exists an abelian subgroup $A$ of $G$ such that $G=AG_0$. We propose a few applications of this structural property of almost simple groups.

Abstract:Abstract Let G be a finite group with an abelian normal subgroup N . When does N have a unique conjugacy class of complements in G ? We consider this question with a focus on properties of maximal subgroups. As corollaries we obtain Theorems 1.6 and 1.7 which are closely related to a result by Parker and Rowley on supplements of a nilpotent normal subgroup [3, Theorem 1]. Furthermore, we consider families of maximal subgroups of G closed under conjugation whose intersection equals {\Phi(G)} . In particular, we characterize the soluble groups having a unique minimal family with this property (Theorem 2.3, Remark 2.4). In the case when {\Phi(G)=1} , these are exactly the soluble groups in which each abelian normal subgroup has a unique conjugacy class of complements.

Generation by conjugate elements of finite almost simple groups with a sporadic socle

Abstract:As defined by Guralnick and Saxl given a nonabelian simple group $S$ and its nonidentity automorphism $x$, a natural number $\alpha_S(x)$ does not exceed a natural number $m$ if some $m$ conjugates of $x$ in the group $\langle x,S\rangle$ generate a subgroup that includes $S$. The outcome of this paper together with one by Di Martino, Pellegrini, and Zalesski, both of which are based on computer calculations with character tables, is a refinement of the estimates by Guralnick and Saxl on the value of $\alpha_S(x)$ in the case where $S$ is a sporadic group. In particular, we prove that $\alpha_S(x)\leqslant 4$, except when $S$ is one of the Fischer groups and $x$ is a $3$-transposition. In the latter case, $\alpha_S(x)=6$ if $S$ is either $Fi_{22}$ or $Fi_{23}$ and $\alpha_S(x)=5$ if $S={Fi_{24}}'$.

We call a subgroup H of G[Formula: see text]-supplemented in G if there exists a normal subgroup K of G such that G = HK and (H ∩ K)H G /H G is contained in the [Formula: see text]-hypercenter [Formula: see text] of G/H G . In this paper, we use [Formula: see text]-supplemented subgroups to study the structure of finite groups. Some known results in the literature are generalized.

Abstract:Given a finite abelian group G and cyclic subgroups A , B , C of G of the same order, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for A , B , C to admit a common transversal for the cosets they afford. For an arbitrary number of cyclic subgroups, we give a sufficient criterion when there exists a common complement. Moreover, in several cases where a common transversal exists, we provide concrete constructions.

Abstract:Earlier, the author described up to conjugacy all pairs of nilpotent subgroups of a finite group with socle for which for any element of . A similar description was obtained by the author later for primary subgroups and of a finite group with socle . In this paper, we describe up to conjugacy all pairs of nilpotent subgroups of a finite group with simple socle from the "Atlas of Finite Groups" for which for any element of . The results obtained in the considered cases confirm the hypothesis (Problem 15.40 from the "Kourovka Notebook") that a finite simple nonabelian group for any nilpotent subgroups contains an element such that .

Abstract:Let G be a group and A , B , C be subgroups of G . In this paper, we prove that if G=AB∪BC , then G = AB or G = BC . But, in general, G=AB∪AC does not imply that G = AB or G = AC . We also prove that if G is a 2-decomposed group, and G is a Sylow tower group or G is nilpotent-by-nilpotent, then G=AB∪AC implies that G = AB or G = AC . Other interesting special cases are also discussed.

Abstract:Let A be a supersingular abelian variety over a finite field k. We give an approximate description of the structure of the group A(k) of rational points of A over k in terms of the characteristic polynomial f of the Frobenius endomorphism of A relative to k. If f=g^e for a monic irreducible polynomial g and a positive integer e, we show that there is a group homomorphism A(k) --> (Z/g(1)Z)^e whose kernel and cokernel are elementary abelian 2-groups. In particular, this map is an isomorphism if the characteristic of k is 2 or A is simple of dimension greater than 2; in the last case one has e=1 or 2, and A(k) is isomorphic to (Z/g(1)Z)^e.

Abstract:We prove that the product of a subset and a normal subset inside any finite simple non‐abelian group G grows rapidly. More precisely, if A and B are two subsets with B normal and neither of them is too large inside G , then |AB|⩾|A||B|1−ε where ε>0 can be taken arbitrarily small. This is a somewhat surprising strengthening of a theorem of Liebeck, Schul, and Shalev.

Abstract:For a Lie algebra $L$ and a subalgebra $M$ of $L$ we say that a subalgebra $U$ of $L$ is a {\em supplement} to $M$ in $L$ if $L = M + U$. We investigate those Lie algebras all of whose maximal subalgebras have abelian supplements, those that have nilpotent supplements, those that have nil supplements, and those that have supplements with the property that their derived algebra is inside the maximal subalgebra being supplemented. For the algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero in the last three of these classes we find complete descriptions; for those in the first class partial results are obtained.

Abstract:Let k be an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic and G a simple algebraic group defined over k. Under the assumption that the characteristic is a good prime for G, we determine a maximal G-stable subvariety U' of the variety of unipotent elements of G such that for all u in U' any two A1-subgroups of G containing u are G-conjugate. This result establishes to what degree an analogue of the Jacobson-Morozov theorem for Lie algebras is valid for simple algebraic groups defined over fields of (good) positive characteristic

Abstract:The article presents several methods for the arithmetic of finite abelian groups. We introduce a tool - already used by Delsarte in [1] as I found out later - analogous to Dirichlet's convolution to obtain combinatorial results on these groups. Using this convolution and some group actions, we deduce an interesting fact : the number of generating subsets of a finite abelian group is always a multiple of the order of the group. Eventually, we prove a theorem about the generation of the group of permutations of an abelian group G using only transpositions and translations from the group G.

Abstract:We associate with every group G a set tau(G) of subgroups of G with 1 is an element of tau(G). If H is an element of tau(G), then we say that H is a tau-subgroup of G. Suppose that every tau-subgroup of G contained in X is subnormally embedded in G. If every maximal subgroup of every non-cyclic Sylow subgroup of X is U-tau-supplemented in G, then G is an element of F. Moreover, in the case when tau is regular, then every chief factor of G below E is cyclic.The results in this paper not only cover and unify a long list of some known results but also cause a wide series of new results. Abstract:We call a finite group G ultrasolvable if it has a characteristic subgroup series whose factors are cyclic. It was shown by Durbin--McDonald that the automorphism group of an ultrasolvable group is supersolvable. The converse statement was established by Baartmans--Woeppel under the hypothesis that G has no direct factor isomorphic to the Klein four-group. We extend this result by proving that Aut(G) is supersolvable if and only if G is ultrasolvable or G=H\times C_2\times C_2 where H is ultrasolvable of odd order. This corrects an erroneous claim by Corsi Tani. Our proof is more elementary than Baartmans--Woeppel's and uses some ideas of Corsi Tani and Laue.

Abstract:Left braces, introduced by Rump, have turned out to provide an important tool in the study of set theoretic solutions of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation. In particular, they have allowed to construct several new families of solutions. A left brace $(B,+,\cdot )$ is a structure determined by two group structures on a set $B$: an abelian group $(B,+)$ and a group $(B,\cdot)$, satisfying certain compatibility conditions. The main result of this paper shows that every finite abelian group $A$ is a subgroup of the additive group of a finite simple left brace $B$ with metabelian multiplicative group with abelian Sylow subgroups. This result complements earlier unexpected results of the authors on an abundance of finite simple left braces.
