Abstract:In this paper, we study possible obstructed deformations of 2-dimensional Galois Representations attached to newforms of weight 2 and level $N > 1$. We provide conditions on the existence of local and global obstructions, and explicit description of the Universal Deformation Ring in several cases.

Abstract:We study deformation theory of mod $p$ Galois representations of $p$-adic fields with values in generalised tori, such as $L$-groups of (possibly non-split) tori. We show that the corresponding deformation rings are formally smooth over a group algebra of a finite abelian $p$-group. We compute their dimension and the set of irreducible components.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove, under a technical assumption, that any semi-direct product of a $p$-group $G$ with a group $\Phi$ of order prime to $p$ can appear as the Galois group of a tower of extensions $H/K/F$ with the property that $H$ is the maximal pro-$p$ extension of $K$ that is unramified everywhere, and $\operatorname{Gal}(H/K) = G$. A consequence of this result is that any local ring admitting a surjection to $\mathbb{Z}_5$ or $\mathbb{Z}_7$ with finite kernel can occur as a universal everywhere unramified deformation ring.

On deformation rings of residual Galois representations with three Jordan-Holder factors and modularity

Abstract:In this paper, we study Fontaine-Laffaille, self-dual deformations of a mod p non-semisimple Galois representation of dimension n with its Jordan-Holder factors being three mutually non-isomorphic absolutely irreducible representations. We show that under some conditions regarding the orders of certain Selmer groups, the universal deformation ring is a discrete valuation ring. Given enough information on the Hecke algebra, we also prove an R = T theorem in the general context. We then apply our results to abelian surfaces with cyclic rational isogenies and certain 6-dimensional representations arising from automorphic forms congruent to Ikeda lifts. Assuming the Bloch-Kato conjecture, our result identifies special L-value conditions for the existence of a unique abelian surface isogeny class and an R = T theorem for certain 6-dimensional Galois representations.

Abstract:We study deformation theory of mod $p$ Galois representations of $p$-adic fields with values in generalised reductive group schemes, such as $L$-groups and $C$-groups. We show that the corresponding deformation rings are complete intersections of expected dimension. We determine their irreducible components in many cases and show that they and their special fibres are normal and complete intersection.

Abstract:Ribet has proven remarkable results about non-optimal levels of residually reducible Galois representations. We focus on a non-optimal level $N$ that is the product of two distinct primes and where the Galois deformation ring is not expected to be Gorenstein. We prove a Galois-theoretic criterion for the deformation ring to be as small as possible -- that is, for there to be a unique newform of level $N$ with reducible residual representation. When this criterion is satisfied, we deduce an $R=\mathbb{T}$ theorem.

Existence of $p$-adic representations and flatness of even deformation rings in balanced global settings of rank one

Abstract:The main goal of this paper is to prove existence of $p$-adic lifts of even Galois representations in balanced global settings with dual Selmer groups of rank one, and to construct examples of even residual representations in characteristic $p=3$ for which the theorem yields existence of $3$-adic lifts. In the proof of the main theorem, we show that if the global deformation rings are not flat over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ at the minimal level, then after allowing ramification at one auxiliary prime, the new parts of the global rings enjoy the flatness property. The proof is independent of the parity of the representations. Previously, flatness was only known in established cases of Langlands reciprocity in the odd parity, while it is new for even deformation rings in balanced global settings of rank one. As a corollary, we show that by choosing the auxiliary prime appropriately, we can control the rank mod $p$ of the new part of the flat ring. The examples of $3$-adic representations and flat, even deformation rings are built by applying techniques from global class field theory to a family of totally real fields studied by D. Shanks. In the process of constructing the even residual representations, we show that there exist cuspidal automorphic representations $\pi$ and $\pi'$ of $\operatorname{GL}(2,\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Q}})$ attached to classical Maass wave forms of level $\ell=20887$ whose mod 3 reductions are distinct. The proof applies a theorem of R. P. Langlands from his theory of base change.

On generalized deformation problems

Abstract:Let $(R,m)$ be a Noetherian local ring and $I$ an ideal with finite projective dimension. If $R/I$ satisfies some property $\mathcal{P}$, it is natural to ask whether $R$ would also satisfy this property $\mathcal{P}$. This is called the generalized deformation problem. In this paper we discuss some properties that would satisfy this problem. There are two main parts for this paper. In the first part we focus on F-singularities of characteristic $p$. We show that F-injective satisfies this problem for the Cohen-Macaulay ring case and F-rational satisfies this problem for the excellent ring case. In the second part there is no restriction on the characteristic of $R$, we show that when $R$ is catenary and equidimensional with $I$ perfect, then the Serre's Condition $R_k$ would satisfy the problem. And the Serre's Condition $S_k$, $R_k+S_{k+1}$, normal rings, reduced rings and domains would always satisfy this problem.

Abstract:In his work on modularity of elliptic curves and Fermat's last theorem, A. Wiles introduced two measures of congruences between Galois representations and between modular forms. One measure is related to the order of a Selmer group associated to a newform (and closely linked to deformations of the Galois representation associated to f), whilst the other measure is related to the congruence module associated to f (and is closely linked to Hecke rings and congruences between f and other newforms in ). The equality of these two measures led to isomorphisms between deformation rings and Hecke rings (via a numerical criterion for isomorphisms that Wiles proved) and showed these rings to be complete intersections. We continue our study begun in [BKM21] of the Wiles defect of deformation rings and Hecke rings (at a newform f) acting on the cohomology of Shimura curves over : It is defined to be the difference between these two measures of congruences. The Wiles defect thus arises from the failure of the Wiles numerical criterion at an augmentation . In situations we study here, the Taylor–Wiles–Kisin patching method gives an isomorphism without the rings being complete intersections. Using novel arguments in commutative algebra and patching, we generalize significantly and give different proofs of the results in [BKM21] that compute the Wiles defect at , and explain in an a priori manner why the answer in [BKM21] is a sum of local defects. As a curious application of our work we give a new and more robust approach to the result of Ribet–Takahashi that computes change of degrees of optimal parametrizations of elliptic curves over by Shimura curves as we vary the Shimura curve. The results we prove are not attainable using only the methods of Ribet–Takahashi.

A Rank-Two Case of Local-Global Compatibility for $l = p$

Abstract:We prove the classical $l = p$ local-global compatibility conjecture for certain regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic representations of weight 0 for GL$_2$ over CM fields. Using an automorphy lifting theorem, we show that if the automorphic side comes from a twist of Steinberg at $v | l$, then the Galois side has nontrivial monodromy at $v$. Based on this observation, we will give a definition of the Fontaine-Mazur $\mathcal{L}$-invariants attached to certain automorphic representations.

Erdmann classified the symmetric $\mathbf{k}$-algebras $\Lambda$ of finite representation type such that every non-projective module $M$ has period dividing four. The goal of this paper is to determine the indecomposable modules $M$ over these class of algebras $\Lambda$ whose stable endomorphism ring is isomorphic to $\mathbf{k}$, and then calculate their corresponding universal deformation rings (in the sense of F. M. Bleher and the third author).

Abstract:Let $K/\mathbf{Q}_p$ be a finite unramified extension, $\overline{\rho}:\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{\mathbf{Q}}_p/K)\rightarrow\mathrm{GL}_n(\overline{\mathbf{F}}_p)$ a continuous representation, and $\tau$ a tame inertial type of dimension $n$. We explicitly determine, under mild regularity conditions on $\tau$, the potentially crystalline deformation ring $R^{\eta,\tau}_{\overline{\rho}}$ in parallel Hodge--Tate weights $\eta=(n-1,\cdots,1,0)$ and inertial type $\tau$ when the \emph{shape} of $\overline{\rho}$ with respect to $\tau$ has colength at most one. This has application to the modularity of a class of shadow weights in the weight part of Serre's conjecture. Along the way we make unconditional the local-global compatibility results of \cite{PQ} and further study the geometry of moduli spaces of Fontaine--Laffaille representations in terms of colength one weights.

Abstract:We show that the minimum rank of a non-isotrivial local system of geometric origin on a suitably general n n -pointed curve of genus g g is at least 2 g + 1 2\sqrt {g+1} . We apply this result to resolve conjectures of Esnault-Kerz and Budur-Wang. The main input is an analysis of stability properties of flat vector bundles under isomonodromic deformations, which additionally answers questions of Biswas, Heu, and Hurtubise.

The cotangent complex is defined in the derived category through the homology localization functor. The basic properties and results of a deformation theory are proved. Abstract:In this paper, we study the obstruction for the sections of the universal hyperelliptic curves of genus $g\geq 3$. The obstruction of our interest comes from the relative completion of the hyperelliptic mapping class groups and the Lie algebra of the unipotent completion of the fundamental group of the configuration space of a compact oriented surface. Using the obstruction, we prove that the Birman exact sequence for the hyperelliptic mapping class groups does not split for $g\geq 3$.

Newform Eisenstein Congruences of Local Origin

Abstract:We give a general conjecture concerning the existence of Eisenstein congruences between weight $k\geq 3$ newforms of square-free level $NM$ and weight $k$ new Eisenstein series of square-free level $N$. Our conjecture allows the forms to have arbitrary character $\chi$ of conductor $N$. The special cases $M=1$ and $M=p$ prime are fully proved, with partial results given in general. We also consider the relation with the Bloch-Kato conjecture, and finish with computational examples demonstrating cases of our conjecture that have resisted proof.

Abstract:Let $U$ be a smooth affine curve over a number field $K$ with a compactification $X$ and let $\mathbb L$ be a rank $2$, geometrically irreducible $\bar{\mathbb Q}_\ell$-local system on $U$ with cyclotomic determinant that extends to an integral model, has Frobenius traces all in some fixed number field $E\subset \bar{\mathbb Q}_\ell$, and has bad, infinite reduction at some closed point $x$ of $X\setminus U$. We show that $\mathbb L$ occurs as a summand of the cohomology of a family of abelian varieties over $U$. The argument follows the structure of the proof of a recent theorem of Snowden-Tsimerman, who show that when $E=\mathbb Q$, then $\mathbb L$ is isomorphic to the cohomology of an elliptic curve $E_U\rightarrow U$.
