Abstract:Let $ \{T_n\}_{n\geq 0} $ be the sequence of Tribonacci numbers. In this paper, we study the exponential Diophantine equation $T_n-2^x3^y=c$, for $n,x,y\in \mathbb{Z}_{\ge0}$. In particular, we show that there is no integer $c$ with at least six representations of the form $T_n-2^x3^y$.

Abstract:Let $ \{L_n\}_{n\geq 0} $ be the sequence of Lucas numbers. In this paper, we look at the exponential Diophantine equation $L_n-2^x3^y=c$, for $n,x,y\in \mathbb{Z}_{\ge0}$. We treat the cases $c\in -\mathbb{N}$, $c=0$ and $c\in \mathbb{N}$ independently. In the cases that $c\in \mathbb{N}$ and $c\in -\mathbb{N}$, we find all integers $c$ such that the Diophantine equation has at least three solutions. These cases are treated independently since we employ quite different techniques in proving the two cases.

Abstract:It is conjectured that for any fixed relatively prime positive integers $a,b$ and $c$ all greater than 1 there is at most one solution to the equation $a^x+b^y=c^z$ in positive integers $x,y$ and $z$, except for specific cases. We develop the methods in our previous work which rely on a variety from Baker's theory and thoroughly study the conjecture for cases where $c$ is small relative to $a$ or $b$. Using restrictions derived under which there is more than one solution to the equation, we obtain a number of finiteness results on the conjecture, which in particular enables us to find some new values of $c$ being presumably infinitely many such that for each such $c$ the conjecture holds true except for only finitely many pairs of $a$ and $b$. Most importantly we prove that if $c=13$ then the equation has at most one solution, except for $(a,b)=(3,10)$ or $(10,3)$ which exactly gives two solutions. Further our study with the help of Schmidt Subspace Theorem among others brings strong contributions to the study of Pillai's type Diophantine equations, which includes a general and satisfactory result on a well-known conjecture of M. Bennett on the equation $a^x-b^y=c$ for any fixed positive integers $a,b$ and $c$ with both $a$ and $b$ greater than 1. Some conditional results are presented under the $abc$-conjecture as well.

Abstract:abstract: For any fixed relatively prime positive integers $a$, $b$ and $c$ with $\min\{a,b,c\}>1$, we prove that the equation $a^x+b^y=c^z$ has at most two solutions in positive integers $x$, $y$ and $z$, except for one specific case which exactly gives three solutions. Our result is essentially sharp in the sense that there are infinitely many examples allowing the equation to have two solutions in positive integers. From the viewpoint of a well-known generalization of Fermat's equation, it is also regarded as a 3-variable generalization of the celebrated theorem of Bennett [M.~A. Bennett, On some exponential equations of S. S. Pillai, Canad. J. Math. 53 (2001), no.~2, 897--922] which asserts that Pillai's type equation $a^x-b^y=c$ has at most two solutions in positive integers $x$ and $y$ for any fixed positive integers $a$, $b$ and $c$ with $\min\{a,b\}>1$.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler's conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system n=a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1, a_1a_2⋯ a_s-1(a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1)=b^s has solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+,i=1,2,…,s-1,s≥ 3. By using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ for s=3, but for s=4 it has infinitely many solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ and for s≥ 5 there are infinitely many polynomial solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ[t_1,t_2,…,t_s-3] with positive value satisfying this Diophantine system.

Abstract:Generalizing an argument of Matiyasevich, we illustrate a method to generate infinitely many diophantine equations whose solutions can be completely described by linear recurrences. In particular, we provide an integer-coefficient polynomial $p(x, y, z)$ whose only integer roots are consecutive triples of Tribonacci numbers.

Let $F_{n}$ be the Fibonacci numbers defined by the recurrence relation $F_{1}=1$, $F_{2}=1$ and $F_{n}=F_{n-1}+F_{n-2}$ for all $n\geq 3$. Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.

Abstract:We consider the number of solutions in positive integers $(x,y,z)$ for the purely exponential Diophantine equation $a^x+b^y =c^z$ (with $\gcd(a,b)=1$). Apart from a list of known exceptions, a conjecture published in 2016 claims that this equation has at most one solution in positive integers $x$, $y$, and $z$. We show that this is true for some ranges of $a$, $b$, $c$, for instance, when $1 < a,b < 3600$ and $c<10^{10}$. The conjecture also holds for small pairs $(a,b)$ independent of $c$, where $2 \le a,b \le 10$ with $\gcd(a,b)=1$. We show that the Pillai equation $a^x - b^y = r > 0$ has at most one solution (with a known list of exceptions) when $2 \le a,b \le 3600$. Finally, the primitive case of the Jeśmanowicz conjecture holds when $a \le 10^6$ or when $b \le 10^6$. This work highlights the power of some ideas of Miyazaki and Pink and the usefulness of a theorem by Scott.

Abstract:This paper contributes to the conjecture of R. Scott and R. Styer which asserts that for any fixed relatively prime positive integers $a,b$ and $c$ greater than 1 there is at most one solution to the equation $a^x+b^y=c^z$ in positive integers $x,y$ and $z$, except for specific cases. The fundamental result proves the conjecture under some congruence condition modulo $c$ on $a$ and $b$. As applications the conjecture is confirmed to be true if $c$ takes some small values including the Fermat primes found so far, and this particularly provides an analytic proof of the celebrated theorem of Scott [R. Scott, On the equations $p^x-b^y=c$ and $a^x+b^y=c^z$, J. Number Theory 44(1993), 153-165] solving the conjecture for $c=2$ in a purely algebraic manner. The method can be generalized for smaller modulus cases, and it turns out that the conjecture holds true for infinitely many specific values of $c$ not being perfect powers. The main novelty is to apply a special type of the $p$-adic analogue to Baker's theory on linear forms in logarithms via a certain divisibility relation arising from the existence of two hypothetical solutions to the equation. The other tools include Baker's theory in the complex case and its non-Archimedean analogue for number fields together with various elementary arguments through rational and quadratic numbers, and extensive computation.

Abstract:Let $a, b\in \mathbb{N}$ be relatively prime. Previous work showed that exactly one of the two equations $ax + by = (a-1)(b-1)/2$ and $ax + by + 1 = (a-1)(b-1)/2$ has a nonnegative, integral solution; furthermore, the solution is unique. Let $F_n$ be the $n$th Fibonacci number. When $(a,b) = (F_n, F_{n+1})$, it is known that there is an explicit formula for the unique solution $(x,y)$. We establish formulas to compute the solution when $(a,b) = (F_n^2, F_{n+1}^2)$ and $(F_n^3, F_{n+1}^3)$, giving rise to some intriguing identities involving Fibonacci numbers. Additionally, we construct a different pair of equations that admits a unique positive (instead of nonnegative), integral solution.

Abstract:F. Luca proved for any fixed rational number $\alpha>0$ that the Diophantine equations of the form $\alpha\,m!=f(n!)$, where $f$ is either the Euler function or the divisor sum function or the function counting the number of divisors, have only finitely many integer solutions $(m,n)$. In this paper we generalize the mentioned result and show that Diophantine equations of the form $\alpha\,m_1!\cdots m_r!=f(n!)$ have finitely many integer solutions, too. In addition, we do so by including the case $f$ is the sum of $k$\textsuperscript{th} powers of divisors function. Moreover, we observe that the same holds by replacing some of the factorials with certain examples of Bhargava factorials.

The equation was studied and claimed to be solved completely in Ddamulira and Luca (Ramanujan J 56(2):651–684, 2021) but there are some computational bugs in that publication because of the wrong statement of Mignotte's bound from Mignotte (A kit on linear forms in three logarithms. http://irma.math.unistra.fr/~bugeaud/travaux/kit.pdf, 2008). Abstract:We study the equation $(x-4r)^3 + (x-3r)^3 + (x-2r)^3+(x-r)^3 + x^3 + (x+r)^3+(x+2r)^3 + (x+3r)^3 + (x+4r)^3 = y^p$, which is a natural continuation of previous works carried out by A. Argáez-García and the fourth author (perfect powers that are sums of cubes of a three, five and seven term arithmetic progression). Under the assumptions $0 < r \leq 10^6$, $p \geq 5 $ a prime and $\gcd(x, r) = 1$, we show that solutions must satisfy $xy=0$. Moreover, we study the equation for prime exponents $2$ and $3$ in greater detail. Under the assumptions $r>0$ a positive integer and $\gcd(x, r) = 1$ we show that there are infinitely many solutions for $p=2$ and $p=3$ via explicit constructions using integral points on elliptic curves. We use an amalgamation of methods in computational and algebraic number theory to overcome the increased computational challenge. Most notable is a significant computational efficiency obtained through appealing to Bilu, Hanrot and Voutier's Primitive Divisor Theorem and the method of Chabauty, as well as employing a Thue equation solver earlier on.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate Diophantine equations of the form $T^2=G(\overline{X}),\; \overline{X}=(X_{1},\ldots,X_{m})$, where $m=3$ or $m=4$ and $G$ is specific homogenous quintic form. First, we prove that if $F(x,y,z)=x^2+y^2+az^2+bxy+cyz+dxz\in\Z[x,y,z]$ and $(b-2,4a-d^2,d)\neq (0,0,0)$, then the Diophantine equation $t^2=nxyzF(x,y,z)$ has solution in polynomials $x, y, z, t$ with integer coefficients, without polynomial common factor of positive degree. In case $a=d=0, b=2$ we prove that there are infinitely many primitive integer solutions of the Diophantine equation under consideration. As an application of our result we prove that for each $n\in\Q\setminus\{0\}$ the Diophantine equation \begin{equation*} T^2=n(X_{1}^5+X_{2}^5+X_{3}^5+X_{4}^5) \end{equation*} has a solution in co-prime (non-homogenous) polynomials in two variables with integer coefficients. We also present a method which sometimes allow us to prove the existence of primitive integers solutions of more general quintic Diophantine equation of the form $T^2=aX_{1}^5+bX_{2}^5+cX_{3}^5+dX_{4}^5$, where $a, b, c, d\in\Z$. In particular, we prove that for each $m, n\in\Z\setminus\{0\},$ the Diophantine equation \begin{equation*} T^2=m(X_{1}^5-X_{2}^5)+n^2(X_{3}^5-X_{4}^5) \end{equation*} has a solution in polynomials which are co-prime over $\Z[t]$. Moreover, we show how modification of the presented method can be used in order to prove that for each $n\in\Q\setminus\{0\}$, the Diophantine equation \begin{equation*} t^2=n(X_{1}^5+X_{2}^5-2X_{3}^5) \end{equation*} has a solution in polynomials which are co-prime over $\Z[t]$.

Abstract: In this paper, we consider some hybrid Diophantine equations of addition and multiplication. We first improve a result on new Hilbert-Waring problem. Then we consider the equation \begin{equation} \begin{cases} A+B=C ABC=D^n \end{cases} \end{equation} where $A,B,C,D,n \in\ZZ_{+}$ and $n\geq3$, which may be regarded as a generalization of Fermat's equation $x^n+y^n=z^n$. When $\gcd(A,B,C)=1$, $(1)$ is equivalent to Fermat's equation, which means it has no positive integer solutions. We discuss several cases for $\gcd(A,B,C)=p^k$ where $p$ is an odd prime. In particular, for $k=1$ we prove that $(1)$ has no nonzero integer solutions when $n=3$ and we conjecture that it is also true for any prime $n>3$. Finally, we consider equation $(1)$ in quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{t})$ for $n=3$.
