Abstract:We prove a bi-ordered version of Rivas' result for free products of left-order groups. Namely, we show that a free product of bi-ordered groups does not admit isolated bi-ordering. Our method relies on the dynamical realization of bi-ordered groups. We also show that the natural action of the automorphism group $Aut(F_2)$ on $F_2$ does not have dense orbits.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct countably many isolated circular orders on the free products $G = F_{2n} \ast \mathbb{Z}_{m_1} \ast \cdots \ast \mathbb{Z}_{m_k}$ of cyclic groups. Moreover, we prove that these isolated circular orders are not the automorphic images of the others. By using these isolated circular orders, we also construct countably many isolated left orders on a certain central $\mathbb{Z}$-extension of $G$, which are not the automorphic images of the others.

Abstract:We give a new criterion which guarantees that a free group admits a bi-ordering that is invariant under a given automorphism. As an application, we show that the fundamental group of the "magic manifold" is bi-orderable, answering a question of Kin and Rolfsen.

Abstract:We give a classification and complete algebraic description of groups allowing only finitely many (left multiplication invariant) circular orders. In particular, they are all solvable groups with a specific semi-direct product decomposition. This allows us to also show that the space of circular orders of any group is either finite or uncountable. As a special case and first step, we show that the space of circular orderings of an infinite Abelian group has no isolated points, hence is homeomorphic to a cantor set.

Abstract:We show that an amalgamated free product $G*_{A}H$ admits a discrete isolated ordering, under some assumptions of $G,H$ and $A$. This generalizes the author's previous construction of isolated orderings, and unlike known constructions of isolated orderings, can produce an isolated ordering with many non-trivial proper convex subgroups.

Abstract:For an automorphism & phi; of a free group Fn of rank n, Bestvina and Handel showed that the rank rk(Fix(& phi;)) of the fixed subgroup is not greater than n. Soon after Bestvina and Handel's announcement, their result was generalized by many authors in various directions. In this paper, we are interested in fixed subgroups of endomorphisms of free products, focusing on explicit bounds for their ranks. By introducing a concept of UFP degree and combining some results of O'Neill-Turner, Sela and Sykiotis, we get explicit bounds for fixed subgroups of RAAGs, stably hyperbolic groups and free products of surface groups.& COPY;2023 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:Motivated by the recent result that left-orderability of a group $G$ is intimately connected to circular orderability of direct products $G \times \mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$, we provide necessary and sufficient cohomological conditions that such a direct product be circularly orderable. As a consequence of the main theorem, we arrive at a new characterization for the fundamental group of a rational homology 3-sphere to be left-orderable. Our results imply that for mapping class groups of once-punctured surfaces, and other groups whose actions on $S^1$ are cohomologically rigid, the products $G \times \mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ are seldom circularly orderable. We also address circular orderability of direct products in general, dealing with the cases of factor groups admitting a bi-invariant circular ordering, and iterated direct products whose factor groups are amenable.

On the growth of actions of free products

Abstract:If $G$ is a finitely generated group and $X$ a $G$-set, the growth of the action of $G$ on $X$ is the function that measures the largest cardinality of a ball of radius $n$ in the Schreier graph $\Gamma(G,X)$. In this note we consider the following stability problem: if $G,H$ are finitely generated groups admitting a faithful action of growth bounded above by a function $f$, does the free product $G \ast H$ also admit a faithful action of growth bounded above by $f$? We show that the answer is positive under additional assumptions, and negative in general. In the negative direction, our counter-examples are obtained with $G$ either the commutator subgroup of the topological full group of a minimal and expansive homeomorphism of the Cantor space; or $G$ a Houghton group. In both cases, the group $G$ admits a faithful action of linear growth, and we show that $G\ast H$ admits no faithful action of subquadratic growth provided $H$ is non-trivial. In the positive direction, we describe a class of groups that admit actions of linear growth and is closed under free products and exhibit examples within this class, among which the Grigorchuk group.

Abstract:We prove that product-free sets of the free group over a finite alphabet have maximum density $1/2$ with respect to the natural measure that assigns total weight one to each set of irreducible words of a given size. This confirms a conjecture of Leader, Letzter, Narayanan and Walters. In more general terms, we actually prove that strongly $k$-product-free sets have maximum density $1/k$ in terms of the said measure.

Abstract:We prove that any group acting faithfully on a bifoliated plane while preserving the orientations of both foliations is left-orderable. The proof utilizes a construction of a linear order on the set of ends of the leaf spaces, which takes advantage of the additional structure coming with a bifoliation. Moreover, we build an identification between ends of leaf spaces of the bifoliation and subsets of the boundary circle at infinity, and use it to give a condition for the equivalence between a faithful group action on a bifoliated plane and a faithful group action on the set of ends of the leaf spaces.

Abstract:Given a graph $\Gamma$ and a number $n$, the associated $n^{th}$ graph braid group $B_n(\Gamma)$ is the fundamental group of the unordered configuration space of $n$ points on $\Gamma$. Świątkowski showed that for a given $\Gamma$ and $n$ large enough, there is a free abelian subgroup of $B_n(\Gamma)$ of rank equal to the cohomological dimension of $B_n(\Gamma)$. In this note, we observe that at the cost of possibly adding additional points, we can find a subgroup of the same cohomological dimension which is a direct product of non-abelian free groups, and give some applications.

Abstract:In a number of recent works, it has been established that many virtually free groups, almost all fundamental groups of surfaces and all groups which are nontrivial free products of groups satisfying a non-trivial law are algebraically closed in any group in which they are verbally closed. Abstract:Let $G = H_1 * ... * H_k * F_r$ be a torsion-free group and $\phi$ an automorphism of $G$ that preserves this free factor system. We show that when $\phi$ is fully irreducible and atoroidal relative to this free factor system, the mapping torus $\Gamma = G \rtimes_{\phi} \mathbb{Z}$ acts relatively geometrically on a hyperbolic CAT(0) cube complex. This is a generalisation of a result of Hagen and Wise for hyperbolic free-by-cyclic groups.

Abstract:A result of Baumslag and Roseblade states that a finitely presented subgroup of the direct product of two free groups is virtually a direct product of free groups. In this paper we generalise this result to the class of cyclic subgroup separable graphs of groups with free abelian vertex groups and cyclic edge groups. More precisely, we show that a finitely presented subgroup of the direct product of two groups in this class is virtually $H$-by-(free abelian), where $H$ is the direct product of two groups in the class. In particular, our result applies to 2-dimensional coherent right-angled Artin groups and residually finite tubular groups. Furthermore, we show that the multiple conjugacy problem and the membership problem are decidable for finitely presented subgroups of the direct product of two $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs.

Higher incoherence of the automorphism groups of a free group

Abstract:Let $F_n$ be the free group on $n \geq 2$ generators. We show that for all $1 \leq m \leq 2n-3$ (respectively for all $1 \leq m \leq 2n-4$) there exists a subgroup of $\operatorname{Aut}(F_n)$ (respectively $\operatorname{Out}(F_n)$) which has finiteness of type $F_{m}$ but not of type $FP_{m+1}(\mathbb{Q})$, hence it is not $m$-coherent. In both cases, the new result is the upper bound $m= 2n-3$ (respectively $m = 2n-4$), as it cannot be obtained by embedding direct products of free noncyclic groups, and certifies higher incoherence up to the virtual cohomological dimension and is therefore sharp. As a tool of the proof, we discuss the existence and nature of multiple inequivalent extensions of suitable finite-index subgroups of $\operatorname{Aut}(F_2)$.

Finitely presented subgroups of direct products of graphs of groups with free abelian vertex groups

Abstract:A result by Bridson, Howie, Miller, and Short states that if $S$ is a finitely presented subgroup of the direct product of free groups, then $S$ is virtually a nilpotent extension of a direct product of free groups. Moreover, if $S$ is a subgroup of type $FP_n$ of the direct product of $n$ free groups, then the nilpotent extension is finite, so $S$ is actually virtually the direct product of free groups. In this paper, these results are generalized to $2$-dimensional coherent right-angled Artin groups. More precisely, we show that a finitely presented subgroup of the direct product of $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs is still virtually a nilpotent extension of a direct product of subgroups. If $S$ is moreover a type $FP_n$ subgroup of the direct product of $n$ $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs, then $S$ is commensurable to a kernel of a character of a direct product of subgroups. Finally, we show that the multiple conjugacy problem and the membership problem are decidable for finitely presented subgroups of direct products of $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs.
