Abstract:We give a new criterion which guarantees that a free group admits a bi-ordering that is invariant under a given automorphism. As an application, we show that the fundamental group of the "magic manifold" is bi-orderable, answering a question of Kin and Rolfsen.

Abstract:We prove a bi-ordered version of Rivas' result for free products of left-order groups. Namely, we show that a free product of bi-ordered groups does not admit isolated bi-ordering. Our method relies on the dynamical realization of bi-ordered groups. We also show that the natural action of the automorphism group $Aut(F_2)$ on $F_2$ does not have dense orbits.

Abstract:We consider a purely algebraic result. Then given a circle or cyclic group of prime order action on a manifold, we will use it to estimate the lower bound of the number of fixed points. We also give an obstruction to the existence of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ action on manifolds with isolated fixed points when $p$ is a prime.
Classifying bi-invariant 2-forms on infinite-dimensional Lie groups

Abstract:A bi-invariant differential 2-form on a Lie group G is a highly constrained object, being determined by purely linear data: an Ad-invariant alternating bilinear form on the Lie algebra of G. On a compact connected Lie group these have an known classification, in terms of de Rham cohomology, which is here generalised to arbitrary finite-dimensional Lie groups, at the cost of losing the connection to cohomology. This expanded classification extends further to all Milnor regular infinite-dimensional Lie groups. I give some examples of (structured) diffeomorphism groups to which the result on bi-invariant forms applies. For symplectomorphism and volume-preserving diffeomorphism groups the spaces of bi-invariant 2-forms are finite-dimensional, and related to the de Rham cohomology of the original compact manifold. In the particular case of the infinite-dimensional projective unitary group PU(H) the classification invalidates an assumption made by Mathai and the author about a certain 2-form on this Banach Lie group.

Abstract:Let W be a first-order structure and ρ be an Aut(W)-congruence on W. In this article we define the almost-free finite covers of W with respect to ρ, and we show how to construct them. These are a generalization of free finite covers. A consequence of a result of [5] is that any finite cover of W with binding groups all equal to a simple non-abelian permutation group is almost-free with respect to some ρ on W. Our main result gives a description (up to isomorphism) in terms of the Aut(W)-congruences on W of the kernels of principal finite covers of W with binding groups equal at any point to a simple non-abelian regular permutation group G. Then we analyze almost-free finite covers of Ω(n), the set of ordered n-tuples of distinct elements from a countable set Ω, regarded as a structure with Aut(Ω(n)) = Sym(Ω) and we show a result about biinterpretability. The material here presented addresses a problem which arises in the context of classification of totally categorical structures.

Taut foliations in branched cyclic covers and left-orderable groups

Abstract:We study the left-orderability of the fundamental groups of cyclic branched covers of links which admit co-oriented taut foliations. In particular we do this for cyclic branched covers of fibred knots in integer homology 3 3 -spheres and cyclic branched covers of closed braids. The latter allows us to complete the proof of the L-space conjecture for closed, connected, orientable, irreducible 3 3 -manifolds containing a genus one fibred knot. We also prove that the universal abelian cover of a manifold obtained by generic Dehn surgery on a hyperbolic fibred knot in an integer homology 3 3 -sphere admits a co-oriented taut foliation and has left-orderable fundamental group, even if the surgered manifold does not, and that the same holds for many branched covers of satellite knots with braided patterns. A key fact used in our proofs is that the Euler class of a universal circle representation associated to a co-oriented taut foliation coincides with the Euler class of the foliation’s tangent bundle. Though known to experts, no proof of this important result has appeared in the literature. We provide such a proof in the paper.

Abstract:We give a classification and complete algebraic description of groups allowing only finitely many (left multiplication invariant) circular orders. In particular, they are all solvable groups with a specific semi-direct product decomposition. This allows us to also show that the space of circular orders of any group is either finite or uncountable. As a special case and first step, we show that the space of circular orderings of an infinite Abelian group has no isolated points, hence is homeomorphic to a cantor set.

Abstract:In this paper we study the left-orderability of $3$-manifold groups using an enhancement, called recalibration, of Calegari and Dunfield's "flipping" construction, used for modifying $\mbox{Homeo}_+(S^1)$-representations of the fundamental groups of closed $3$-manifolds. The added flexibility accorded by recalibration allows us to produce $\mbox{Homeo}_+(S^1)$-representations of hyperbolic link exteriors so that a chosen element in the peripheral subgroup is sent to any given rational rotation. We apply these representations to show that the branched covers of families of links associated to arbitrary epimorphisms of the link group onto a finite cyclic group are left-orderable. This applies, for instance, to fibered hyperbolic strongly quasipositive links. Our result on the orderability of branched covers implies that the degeneracy locus of any pseudo-Anosov flow on an alternating knot complement must be meridional, which generalizes the known result that the fractional Dehn twist coefficient of any hyperbolic fibered alternating knot is zero. Applications of these representations to order-detection of slopes are also discussed in the paper.

Abstract:The famous Brauer–Fowler theorem states that the order of a finite simple group can be bounded in terms of the order of the centralizer of an involution. Using the classification of finite simple groups, we generalize this theorem and prove that if a simple locally finite group has an involution which commutes with at most n involutions, then the group is finite and its order is bounded in terms of n only. This answers a question of Strunkov from the Kourovka notebook.

Abstract:Applying a classical theorem of Smith, we show that the poset property of being Gorenstein* over Z2 is inherited by the subposet of fixed points under an involutive poset automorphism. As an application, we prove that every interval in the Bruhat order on (twisted) involutions in an arbitrary Coxeter group has this property, and we find the rank function. This implies results conjectured by F. Incitti. We also show that the Bruhat order on the fixed points of an involutive automorphism induced by a Coxeter graph automorphism is isomorphic to the Bruhat order on the fixed subgroup viewed as a Coxeter group in its own right.

Abstract:In this article we study the space of left- and bi-invariant orderings on a torsion-free nilpotent group $G$. We will show that generally the set of such orderings is equipped with a faithful action of the automorphism group of $G$. We prove a result which allows us to establish the same conclusion when $G$ is assumed to be merely residually torsion-free nilpotent. In particular, we obtain faithful actions of mapping class groups of surfaces. We will draw connections between the structure of orderings on residually torsion-free nilpotent, hyperbolic groups and their Gromov boundaries, and we show that in those cases a faithful $\Aut(G)$-action on the boundary is equivalent to a faithful $\Aut(G)$ action on the space of left--invariant orderings.

Orderability of big mapping class groups

Abstract:We give an alternate proof of the left-orderability of the mapping class group of a connected oriented infinite-type surface with a non-empty boundary. Our main strategy involves the inductive construction of a countable stable Alexander system for the surface using a carefully chosen exhaustion by finite-type subsurfaces. In fact, we prove that a generalised ideal arc system for the surface also induces a left-ordering on the big mapping class group. We then prove that two generalised ideal arc systems determine the same left-ordering if and only if they are loosely isotopic. Finally, we prove that the topology on the big mapping class group is the same as the order topology induced by a left-ordering corresponding to an inductively constructed ideal arc system.

Abstract:Motivated by well known results in low-dimensional topology, we introduce and study a topology on the set CO(G) of all left-invariant circular orders on a fixed countable and discrete group G. CO(G) contains as a closed subspace LO(G), the space of all left-invariant linear orders of G, as first topologized by Sikora. We use the compactness of these spaces to show the sets of non-linearly and non-circularly orderable finitely presented groups are recursively enumerable. We describe the action of Aut(G) on CO(G) and relate it to results of Koberda regarding the action on LO(G). We then study two families of circularly orderable groups: finitely generated abelian groups, and free products of circularly orderable groups. For finitely generated abelian groups A, we use a classification of elements of CO(A) to describe the homeomorphism type of the space CO(A), and to show that Aut(A) acts faithfully on the subspace of circular orders which are not linear. We define and characterize Archimedean circular orders, in analogy with linear Archimedean orders. We describe explicit examples of circular orders on free products of circularly orderable groups, and prove a result about the abundance of orders on free products. Whenever possible, we prove and interpret our results from a dynamical perspective.

Left-orderability of Groups Acting on Bifoliated Planes

Abstract:We prove that any group acting faithfully on a bifoliated plane while preserving the orientations of both foliations is left-orderable. The proof utilizes a construction of a linear order on the set of ends of the leaf spaces, which takes advantage of the additional structure coming with a bifoliation. Moreover, we build an identification between ends of leaf spaces of the bifoliation and subsets of the boundary circle at infinity, and use it to give a condition for the equivalence between a faithful group action on a bifoliated plane and a faithful group action on the set of ends of the leaf spaces.

Abstract:We classify all order one invariants of immersions of a closed orientable surface F into R^3, with values in an arbitrary Abelian group G. We show that for any F and G and any regular homotopy class A of immersions of F into R^3, the group of all order one invariants on A is isomorphic to G^\aleph_0 \oplus B \oplus B where G^\aleph_0 is the group of all functions from a set of cardinality \aleph_0 into G and B={x\in G : 2x=0}. Our work includes foundations for the study of finite order invariants of immersions of a closed orientable surface into R^3, analogous to chord diagrams and the 1-term and 4-term relations of knot theory.

Abstract:The group of 2-by-2 matrices with integer entries and determinant $\pm > 1$ can be identified either with the group of outer automorphisms of a rank two free group or with the group of isotopy classes of homeomorphisms of a 2-dimensional torus. Thus this group is the beginning of three natural sequences of groups, namely the general linear groups ${\rm{GL}}(n,\Z)$, the groups of outer automorphisms of free groups of rank $n\geq 2$, and the mapping class groups of closed orientable surfaces of genus $g\geq 1$. Much of the work on mapping class groups and automorphisms of free groups is motivated by the idea that these sequences of groups are strongly analogous. In this article we highlight a few of the most striking similarities and differences between these series of groups and present a list of open problems motivated by this philosophy.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent result that left-orderability of a group $G$ is intimately connected to circular orderability of direct products $G \times \mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$, we provide necessary and sufficient cohomological conditions that such a direct product be circularly orderable. As a consequence of the main theorem, we arrive at a new characterization for the fundamental group of a rational homology 3-sphere to be left-orderable. Our results imply that for mapping class groups of once-punctured surfaces, and other groups whose actions on $S^1$ are cohomologically rigid, the products $G \times \mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ are seldom circularly orderable. We also address circular orderability of direct products in general, dealing with the cases of factor groups admitting a bi-invariant circular ordering, and iterated direct products whose factor groups are amenable.
