Abstract:The image of a holomorphic map germ is not necessarily locally open, and it is not always well-defined as a set germ. We find the structure of what becomes the image of a map germ when the target is a surface. We encode it as a decorated tree and we derive a complexity degree.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems Addressed by the Paper
The paper aims to address the issue of whether the image of a germ of a complex analytic mapping can be defined as a local open set, and to explore its structure when the image cannot be defined as a germ of a set.
Specifically, for a non-constant germ of a complex analytic mapping \( F: (X, p) \rightarrow (Y, y) \), when the target space \( Y \) is a 2-dimensional surface, the authors propose a new definition to describe the image of the mapping germ and encode it as a decorated tree to derive a complexity measure.
#### Main Contributions
1. **Proposing a New Definition of Image**:
- The image of the mapping germ \( F \) is defined as a subset of the germ of curves \( F^*(A_{X, p}) \subset A_{Y, y} \).
- When \( F \) is a constant mapping, \( F^*(A_{X, p}) = 0_y \).
2. **Algorithm Description**:
- An algorithm is provided to describe the structure of \( F^*(A_{X, p}) \), especially when the target space \( Y \) is a 2-dimensional surface.
- The complexity of the image of the mapping germ is encoded as a new finite decorated tree.
3. **Complexity Measure**:
- A complexity measure of the image \( \kappa(F) \) is introduced, which equals the maximum length of the branch chains in the image of the mapping germ.
Through the above methods, the paper addresses the situation when the image of a mapping germ cannot be well-defined as a germ of a set and provides a method to describe the structure of the image of the mapping germ in such cases.
