Abstract:I discuss Ren{\'e} Thom's approach to philosophy based on his mathematical background. At the same time, I will highlight his connection with Aristotle, his criticism of the modern view of science as a predictive process, his ideas on mathematical education, his position with respect to the French school of mathematics that was dominent in his time and his relationship with the philosophical community. I will also touch upon the connections between Thom's ideas and those of Leibniz, Riemann, Freud and others. The last version of this paper will appear as a chapter in the book Handbook of the History and Philosophy of Mathematical Practice (ed. Bharath Sriraman), Springer.
On $T$-Maps and Ideals of Antiderivatives of Hypersurface Singularities

Abstract:Mather-Yau's theorem leads to an extensive study about moduli algebras of isolated hypersurface singularities. In this paper, the Tjurina ideal is generalized as $T$-principal ideals of certain $T$-maps for Noetherian algebras. Moreover, we introduce the ideal of antiderivatives of a $T$-map, which creates many new invariants. Firstly, we compute two new invariants associated with ideals of antiderivatives for ADE singularities and conjecture a general pattern of polynomial growth of these invariants. Secondly, the language of $T$-maps is applied to generalize the well-known theorem that the Milnor number of a semi quasi-homogeneous singularity is equal to that of its principal part. Finally, we use the $T$- fullness and $T$-dependence conditions to determine whether an ideal is a $T$-principal ideal and provide a constructive way of giving a generator of a $T$-principal ideal. As a result, the problem about reconstruction of a hypersurface singularitiy from its generalized moduli algebras is solved. It generalizes the results of Rodrigues in the cases of the $0$th and $1$st moduli algebra, which inspired our solution. Bibliography: 24 titles.

Abstract:The treatise of Abū Ja'far al-Khāzin (Xth century), entitled "Commentary on the introduction of the tenth book of the treatise of Euclid" ("tafsīr sadr al-maqāla al-'āshira min kitāb Uqlīdis") exists in eight manuscripts. In this paper we present a study of this treatise, based on a first edition we have made, according to the copies of the manuscripts of Paris, Leiden and Tunis, Ahmadiya. A reading of this treatise of al-Khāzin proves that this mathematician did a profound study of the Xth book of Euclid Elements, in order to gain a global comprehension. In effect, he presented a condensed commentary, the originality of which can be felt both on the formal and the contents levels. The aim of our study is to try, as much as possible, to show this originality, referring specially to Pappus commentary of the "Xth book", the works of R. Rashed on the history of algebra and a recent work of M. Ben Miled on the Arabic commentaries of the Xth book. It appears to us that the work of al-Khāzin concerning the Xth book, is situated in the current of an Arabic tradition identified, mainly due to the works of R. Rashed, by: - an algebraic representation of the geometrical work of Euclid, - a numerical interpretation of the Euclidian notions, rendered possible by the introduction of a unity for every kind of magnitude.

Abstract:This is the translation to appear in the "SUPERSYMMETRY 2000 - Encyclopaedic Dictionary" of the original paper, published in March 1980, (C.R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. A-B, 290, 1980) in which basic notions of noncommutative geometry were introduced and applied to noncommutative tori. These include connections on finite projective modules, their curvature, and the Chern character. Finite projective modules on the noncommutative two-torus $ \Tb^2_{\theta}$ were realized as Schwartz spaces of vector valued functions on $\Rb$. Explicit constant curvature connections were constructed and a basic integrality phenomenon of the total curvature was displayed. The pseudo-differential calculus and the Atiyah-Singer index theorems were extended to Lie group actions on $C^*$ algebras and used to explain the above integrality of the total curvature by an index formula for finite difference-differential operators on the line. Recent interest in the hep-th literature for basic notions of noncommutative geometry in the case of noncommutative tori (cf for instance <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0012145" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0012145">hep-th/0012145</a> for an excellent review) prompted us to make the English translation of the original paper available.

Abstract:This note tries to show that a re-examination of a first course in analysis, using the more sophisticated tools and approaches obtained in later stages, can be a real fun for experts, advanced students, etc. We start by going to the extreme, namely we present two proofs of the Extreme Value Theorem: "the programmer proof" that suggests a method (which is practical in down-to-earth settings) to approximate, to any required precision, the extreme values of the given function in a metric space setting, and an abstract space proof ("the level-set proof") for semicontinuous functions defined on compact topological spaces. Next, in the intermediate part, we consider the Intermediate Value Theorem, generalize it to a wide class of discontinuous functions, and re-examine the meaning of the intermediate value property. The trek reaches the final frontier when we discuss the Uniform Continuity Theorem, generalize it, re-examine the meaning of uniform continuity, and find the optimal delta of the given epsilon. Abstract:Generalized Functions play a central role in the understanding of differential equations containing singularities and nonlinearities. Introducing infinitesimals and infinities to deal with these obstructions leads to controversies concerning the existence, rigor and the amount of non-standard analysis needed to understand these theories. Milieus constructed over the generalized reals sidestep them all. A Riemannian manifold M embeds discretely into a generalized manifold $M^*$ on which singularities vanish and products of nonlinearities make sense. Linking this to an already existing global theory provides an algebra embedding $\kappa :\hat{\cal{G}}(M)\longrightarrow {\cal{C}}^{\infty}(M^*,\widetilde{\mathbb{R}}_f)$. Generalized Space-Time is constructed and its possible effects on Classical Space-Time are examined.

Abstract:Pour $K$ un corps global (corps de nombres ou corps de fonctions d'une variable sur un corps fini $F$), on dispose de théorèmes de dualité classiques (Tate, Poitou, Nakayama) pour la cohomologie galoisienne à valeurs dans des tores et des modules abéliens finis. Nous établissons de tels théorèmes pour $K$ le corps des fonctions d'une courbe projective et lisse sur le corps $F={\bf C}((t))$ des séries formelles en une variable sur le corps des complexes. Cela permet de contrôler le défaut du principe de Hasse et l'approximation faible pour les espaces homogènes sous un tore. Il y a ici des différences avec le cas classique ($K$ corps global), et aussi avec le cas récemment étudié où $K$ est un corps de fonctions d'une variable sur un corps $p$-adique. Par exemple, la $K$-rationalité d'un tore n'implique pas ici la validité du principe de Hasse pour ses espaces principaux homogènes. ---------------- Over a global field $K$ (number field, or function field of a curve over a finite field $F$), arithmetic duality theorems for the Galois cohomology of tori and finite Galois modules have long been known. More recent work investigates the case where $K$ is the function fields of of a curve over a $p$-adic field. For $K$ the function field of a curve over the formal series field $F={\bf C}((t))$, we establish analogous duality theorems. We thus control the obstruction to the local-global principle and to weak approximation for homogeneous spaces of tori. There are differences with the afore described cases. For example the Hasse principle need not hold for principal homogeneous spaces of a $K$-rational torus.

Abstract:This expository article is devoted to the local theory of ultradifferentiable classes of functions, with a special emphasis on the quasianalytic case. Although quasianalytic classes are well-known in harmonic analysis since several decades, their study from the viewpoint of differential analysis and analytic geometry has begun much more recently and, to some extent, has earned them a new interest. Therefore, we focus on contemporary questions closely related to topics in local algebra. We study, in particular, Weierstrass division problems and the role of hyperbolicity, together with properties of ideals of quasianalytic germs. Incidentally, we also present a simplified proof of Carleman's theorem on the non-surjectivity of the Borel map in the quasianalytic case.

Abstract:The goal of this paper consists of developing a new (more physical and numerical in comparison with standard and non-standard analysis approaches) point of view on Calculus with functions assuming infinite and infinitesimal values. It uses recently introduced infinite and infinitesimal numbers being in accordance with the principle 'The part is less than the whole' observed in the physical world around us. These numbers have a strong practical advantage with respect to traditional approaches: they are representable at a new kind of a computer - the Infinity Computer - able to work numerically with all of them. An introduction to the theory of physical and mathematical continuity and differentiation (including subdifferentials) for functions assuming finite, infinite, and infinitesimal values over finite, infinite, and infinitesimal domains is developed in the paper. This theory allows one to work with derivatives that can assume not only finite but infinite and infinitesimal values, as well. It is emphasized that the newly introduced notion of the physical continuity allows one to see the same mathematical object as a continuous or a discrete one, in dependence on the wish of the researcher, i.e., as it happens in the physical world where the same object can be viewed as a continuous or a discrete in dependence on the instrument of the observation used by the researcher. Connections between pure mathematical concepts and their computational realizations are continuously emphasized through the text. Numerous examples are given.

Abstract:THE late Prof. Durége's treatise, in this English translation, will be a welcome addition to the works on this subject by Forsyth and Harkness and Morley. Durége has a genial method of exposition, as all who know his other book on Elliptic Functions will testify. The numerous definitions and novel ideas in the “Theory of Functions” are made clear by well-chosen illustrations and diagrams. There is no reference to the date of the first edition, but we believe it goes back some thirty years; so that Durége could claim to be a pioneer in the presentation of this subject to the general reader, Weier-strass's ideas being inaccessible to all except his own university pupils.

Abstract:This book is made of two parts. The first is concerned with the differential form spectrum of congruence hyperbolic manifolds. We prove Selberg type theorems on the first eigenvalue of the laplacian on differential forms. The method of proof is representation theoritic, we hope the different chapters may as well serve as an introduction to the modern theory of automorphic forms and its application to spectral questions. The second part of the book is of a more differential geometric flavor, a new kind of lifting of cohomology classes is proved.

Abstract:Formalization of real analysis offers a chance to rebuild traditional proofs of important theorems as unambiguous theories that can be interactively explored. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the Lebesgue Differentiation Theorem formalized in the Coq proof assistant, from which the first Fundamental Theorem of Calculus (FTC) for the Lebesgue integral is obtained as a corollary. Proving the first FTC in this way has the advantage of decomposing into loosely-coupled theories of moderate size and of independent interest that lend themselves well to incremental and collaborative development. We explain how we formalize all the topological constructs and all the standard lemmas needed to eventually relate the definitions of derivability and of Lebesgue integration of MathComp-Analysis, a formalization of analysis developed on top of the Mathematical Components library. In the course of this experiment, we substantially enrich MathComp-Analysis and even devise a new proof for Urysohn's lemma.

Towards a geometric theory of integration

Abstract:Integration is the final key step when turning an infinitesimal argument into a result applicable to quantities of finite size. Conceptually, it is about combining infinitesimal contributions to a finite whole. We make a first step towards a geometric theory of integration in the context of Synthetic Differential Geometry (SDG) by analysing the differential aspect of the integration process. Starting from two heuristic principles that combine the idea of differential forms as infinitesimal measures while formalising the process of taking infinitesimal differences at the same time we derive a general notion of differential form as an equivariant map from infinitesimal $n$-cuboids to the base ring coordinatising a line. Besides the familiar differential forms introduced by Cartan we discover two new types. We also discover a new differential operator besides the exterior derivative. Analogous to the relationship between the exterior derivative and the Stokes-Cartan integral theorem, this new operator is linked to the generalised Fundamental Theorem of Calculus in higher dimensions, as discussed in prior research. This shows that the Fundamental Theorem is an integral theorem like Stokes-Cartan, but for one of the new types of differential forms.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence has recently experienced remarkable advances, fueled by large models, vast datasets, accelerated hardware, and, last but not least, the transformative power of differentiable programming. This new programming paradigm enables end-to-end differentiation of complex computer programs (including those with control flows and data structures), making gradient-based optimization of program parameters possible. As an emerging paradigm, differentiable programming builds upon several areas of computer science and applied mathematics, including automatic differentiation, graphical models, optimization and statistics. This book presents a comprehensive review of the fundamental concepts useful for differentiable programming. We adopt two main perspectives, that of optimization and that of probability, with clear analogies between the two. Differentiable programming is not merely the differentiation of programs, but also the thoughtful design of programs intended for differentiation. By making programs differentiable, we inherently introduce probability distributions over their execution, providing a means to quantify the uncertainty associated with program outputs.
