Abstract:We prove a higher-dimensional Chevalley restriction theorem for orthogonal groups, which was conjectured by Chen and Ngo for reductive groups. In characteristic p > 2, we also prove a weaker statement. In characteristic 0, the theorem implies that the categorical quotient of a commuting scheme by the diagonal adjoint action of the group is integral and normal. As applications, we deduce some trace identities and a certain multiplicative property of the Pfaffian over an arbitrary commutative algebra. (c) 2023 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
Fixed locus dimension of diagonalizable $p$-groups

Abstract:We obtain lower bounds for the dimension of fixed loci of abelian $p$-groups acting on smooth projective varieties. Those arise from modulo p Chern numbers, and are shown to be optimal. The bounds are expressed in a natural way by introducing an appropriate filtration on the modulo $p$ cobordism ring. They are obtained using equivariant localization methods, via the concentration theorem, and by a technique of "partition dividing".

Abstract:We generalize a theorem of Bismut–Zhang, which extends the Cheeger–Müller theorem on Ray–Singer torsion and Reidemeister torsion, to the case of infinite Galois covering spaces. Our result is stated in the framework of extended cohomology, and generalizes in this case a recent result of Braverman–Carey–Farber–Mathai. It does not use the determinant class condition and thus also (potentially) generalizes several results on L2-torsions due to Burghelea, Friedlander, Kappeler and McDonald. We combine the framework developed by Braverman–Carey–Farber–Mathai on the determinant of extended cohomology with the heat kernel method developed in the original paper of Bismut–Zhang to prove our result.

Abstract:We prove that the restriction operator for the H-type groups is bounded from L-p to L-p' for p near to 1 when the dimension of the center is larger than one, and the range of p depends on the dimension of the center. This is different from the Heisenberg group, on which the restriction operator is not bounded from L-p to L-p' unless p = 1.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that every automorphism of a Chevalley group (or its elementary subgroup) with root system of rank > 1 over a commutative ring (with 1/2 for the systems A2,F4,Bl,Cl ; with 1/2 and 1/3 for the system G2 ) is standard, i.e., it is a composition of ring, inner, central and graph automorphisms. This result finalizes description of automorphisms of Chevalley groups. However, the restrictions on invertible elements can be a topic of further considerations. We provide also some model-theoretic applications of this description.

The key step is the construction of the inverse map of the Chevalley restriction map called the spectral data map. Abstract:Abstract We study the $p$-rank stratification of the moduli space $\operatorname{\mathcal{A}\mathcal{S}\mathcal{W}}_{(d_{1},d_{2},\ldots ,d_{n})}$, which represents $\mathbb{Z}/p^{n}$-covers in characteristic $p>0$ whose $\mathbb{Z}/p^{i}$-subcovers have conductor $d_{i}$. In particular, we identify the irreducible components of the moduli space and determine their dimensions. To achieve this, we analyze the ramification data of the represented curves and use it to classify all the irreducible components of the space. In addition, we provide a comprehensive list of pairs $(p,(d_{1},d_{2},\ldots ,d_{n}))$ for which $\operatorname{\mathcal{A}\mathcal{S}\mathcal{W}}_{(d_{1},d_{2},\ldots ,d_{n})}$ in characteristic $p$ is irreducible. Finally, we investigate the geometry of $\operatorname{\mathcal{A}\mathcal{S}\mathcal{W}}_{(d_{1},d_{2},\ldots ,d_{n})}$ by studying the deformations of cyclic covers that vary the $p$-rank and the number of branch points.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime. We construct a $p$-group $P$ of nilpotency class two, rank seven and exponent $p$, such that $\mathrm{Aut}(P)$ induces $N_{\mathrm{GL}(7,p)}(G_2(p)) = Z(\mathrm{GL}(7,p)) G_2(p)$ on the Frattini quotient $P/\Phi(P)$. The constructed group $P$ is the smallest $p$-group with these properties, having order $p^{14}$, and when $p = 3$, our construction gives two nonisomorphic $p$-groups. To show that $P$ satisfies the specified properties, we study the action of $G_2(q)$ on the octonion algebra over $\mathbb{F}_q$, for each power $q$ of $p$, and explore the reducibility of the exterior square of each irreducible seven-dimensional $\mathbb{F}_q[G_2(q)]$-module.

Abstract:In this article, we prove a $p$-adic analogue of the local invariant cycle theorem for $H^2$ in mixed characteristics. As a result, for a smooth projective variety $X$ over a $p$-adic local field $K$ with a proper flat regular model $\mathcal{X}$ over $O_K$, we show that the natural map $Br(\mathcal{X})\rightarrow Br(X_{\bar{K}})^{G_K}$ has a finite kernel and a finite cokernel. And we prove that the natural map $Hom(Br(X)/Br(K)+Br(\mathcal{X}), \mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}) \rightarrow Alb_X(K)$ has a finite kernel and a finite cokernel, generalizing Lichtenbaum's duality between Brauer groups and Jacobians for curves to arbitrary dimensions.

The Diophantine problem in Chevalley groups

Abstract:In this paper we study the Diophantine problem in Chevalley groups $G_\pi (\Phi,R)$, where $\Phi$ is an indecomposable root system of rank $> 1$, $R$ is an arbitrary commutative ring with $1$. We establish a variant of double centralizer theorem for elementary unipotents $x_\alpha(1)$. This theorem is valid for arbitrary commutative rings with $1$. The result is principle to show that any one-parametric subgroup $X_\alpha$, $\alpha \in \Phi$, is Diophantine in $G$. Then we prove that the Diophantine problem in $G_\pi (\Phi,R)$ is polynomial time equivalent (more precisely, Karp equivalent) to the Diophantine problem in $R$. This fact gives rise to a number of model-theoretic corollaries for specific types of rings.

Abstract:A well-known conjecture of Babai states that if G is any finite simple group and X is a generating set for G , then the diameter of the Cayley graph Cay( G , X ) is bounded by log ∣ G ∣ c for some universal constant c . In this paper, we prove such a bound for Cay( G , X ) for G = PSL( n , q ), PSp( n , q ) or PSU( n , q ) where q is odd, under the assumptions that X contains a transvection and q ≠ 9 or 81.

Abstract:A $\mathbf{GL}$-variety is a (typically infinite dimensional) variety modeled on the polynomial representation theory of the general linear group. In previous work, we studied these varieties in characteristic 0. In this paper, we obtain results in positive characteristic: for example, we prove a version of Chevalley's theorem on constructible sets. We give an application of our theory to strength of polynomials.

Abstract:Replacing symmetric powers by divided powers and working over Witt vectors instead of ground fields, I generalize Kawamatas T^1-lifting theorem to characteristic p>0. Combined with the work of Deligne-Illusie on degeneration of the Hodge-de Rham spectral sequences, this gives unobstructedness for certain Calabi-Yau varieties with free crystalline cohomology modules.

Mod-$p$ Galois representations not arising from abelian varieties

Abstract:It is known that any Galois representation $\rho : G_{\mathbb{Q}} \rightarrow \mathrm{GL}(2,\mathbb{F}_p)$ with determinant equal to the mod-$p$ cyclotomic character, arises from the $p$-torsion of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$, if and only if $p \leq 5$. In dimension $g = 2$, when $p \le 3$, it is again known that any Galois representation valued in $\mathrm{GSp}(4,\mathbb{F}_p)$ with cyclotomic similitude character arises from an abelian surface. In this paper, we study this question for all primes $p$ and dimensions $g \ge 2$. When $g \ge 2$ and $(g,p) \neq (2,2)$, $(2,3)$, $(3,2)$, we prove the existence of a Galois representation over $\mathbb{Q}$ valued in $\mathrm{GSp}(2g,\mathbb{F}_p)$ with cyclotomic similitude character, that cannot arise as the $p$-torsion representation of any $g$-dimensional abelian variety over $\mathbb{Q}$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a $p$-divisible group over a complete discrete valuation ring $R$ of characteristic $p$. The generic fiber of $G$ determines a Galois representation $\rho$. The image of $\rho$ admits a ramification filtration and a Lie filtration. We relate these filtrations in the case $G$ is one dimensional, giving an equicharacteristic version of Sen's theorem in this setting. This result generalizes results of Gross and Chai. Additionally, we prove that the representation associated to the étale part of $G$ is irreducible.

Abstract:For a Chevalley group G over an algebraically closed field K of characteristic p>0 with the irreducible root system R, Lusztig's character formula expresses the formal character of a simple G-module by the formal characters of the Weyl modules and the values of the Kazhdan–Lusztig polynomials at 1. It is known that, for a sufficiently large characteristic p of the field K, Lusztig's character formula holds. The known lower bound of the characteristic p is much larger than the Coxeter number h of the root system R. Observations show that for simple modules with restricted highest weights of small Chevalley groups such as those of types A1,A2, A3,B2, B3, and C3, Lusztig's character formula holds for all p≥h. For large Chevalley groups, no other examples are known. In this paper, for G of type Al, we give some series of simple modules for which Lusztig's character formula holds for all p≥h. Using this result, we compute the cohomology of G with coefficients in these simple modules. To prove the results, Jantzen's filtration properties for Weyl modules and the properties of Kazhdan–Lusztig polynomials are used.

Abstract:We give conditions under which the number of solutions of a system of polynomial equations over a finite field F_q of characteristic p is divisible by p. Our setup involves the substitution t_i |-> f_i(t_i) for auxiliary polynomials f_1,...,f_n in F_q[t]. We recover as special cases results of Chevalley-Warning and Morlaye-Joly. Then we investigate higher p-adic divisibilities, proving a result that recovers the Ax-Katz Theorem. We also consider p-weight degrees, recovering work of Moreno-Moreno, Moreno-Castro and Castro-Castro-Velez.

Abstract:A problem of current interest, also motivated by applications to Coding theory, is to find explicit equations for \textit{maximal} curves, that are projective, geometrically irreducible, non-singular curves defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ whose number of $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$-rational points attains the Hasse-Weil upper bound of $q^2+2\mathfrak{g}q+1$ where $\mathfrak{g}$ is the genus of the curve $\mathcal{X}$. For curves which are Galois covered of the Hermitian curve, this has been done so far ad hoc, in particular in the cases where the Galois group has prime order and also when has order the square of the characteristic. In this paper we obtain explicit equations of all Galois covers of the Hermitian curve with Galois group of order $dp$ where $p$ is the characteristic of $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ and $d$ is prime other than $p$. We also compute the generators of the Weierstrass semigroup at a special $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$-rational point of some of the curves, and discuss some possible positive impacts on the minimum distance problems of AG-codes.
