Abstract:We prove a conjecture on the Chow ring of characteristic classes for the special Clifford groups. This conjecture was the only obstacle for obtaining an algorithm computing the maximal indexes of twisted spin grassmannians.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective quadric defined over a field of characteristic 2. We prove that in the Chow group of codimension 2 or 3 of $X$ the torsion subgroup has at most two elements. In codimension 2, we determine precisely when this torsion subgroup is nontrivial. In codimension 3, we show that there is no torsion if $\dim X\ge 11$. This extends the analogous results in characteristic different from 2, obtained by Karpenko in the nineteen-nineties.

Abstract:We show that the chow group of $p$-cycles with rational coefficients are isomorphic to the corresponding rational homology groups for smooth complex projective varieties carrying a holomorphic vector field with an isolated zero locus. As applications, we obtain Chow groups and Lawson homology groups with rational coefficients and verify the Friedlander-Mazur conjecture and the Generalized Hodge conjecture for those varieties.

Abstract:Nebe, Rains and Sloane studied the polynomial invariants for real and complex Clifford groups and they give a new conceptual proof that these invariants are spanned by the set of complete weight enumerators of certain self-dual codes, which was first proved by Runge using modular forms. The purpose of this paper is to show that very similar results can be obtained for the invariants of the complex Clifford group X-m acting on the space of conjugate polynomials in 2(m) variables of degree N-1 in x(f) and of degree N-2 in their complex conjugates (x(f)) over bar. In particular, we show that the dimension of this space is 2, for (N-1, N-2)=(5,5). This solves affirmatively Conjecture 2 given by Zhu, Kueng, Grassl and Gross. In other words if an orbit of the complex Clifford group is a projective 4-design, then it is automatically a projective 5-design.

Abstract:We compute the Chow ring of a quasi-split geometrically almost simple algebraic group assuming the coefficients to be a field. This extends the classical computation for split groups done by Kac to the non-split quasi-split case. For the proof we introduce and study equivariant conormed Chow rings, which are well adapted to the study of quasi-split groups and their homogeneous varieties.

On character table of Clifford groups

Abstract:Based on a presentation of $\mathcal{C}_n$ and the help of [GAP], we construct the character table of the Clifford group $\mathcal{C}_n$ for $n=1,2,3$. As an application, we can efficiently decompose the (higher power of) tensor product of the matrix representation in those cases. Our results recover some known results in [HWW, WF] and reveal some new phenomena. We prove that when $n \geq 3$, (1) the trivial character is the only linear character for $\mathcal{C}_n$ and hence $\mathcal{C}_n$ equals to its commutator subgroup, (2) the $n$-qubit Pauli group $\mathcal{P}_n$ is the only proper non-trivial normal subgroup of $\mathcal{C}_n$, (3) the matrix representation $\mathcal{M}_{2^n}$ is a faithful representation for $\mathcal{C}_n$. As a byproduct, we give a presentation of the finite symplectic group $Sp(2n,2)$ in terms of generators and relations.

The Total Rank Conjecture in Characteristic Two

Abstract:The Total Rank Conjecture is a coarser version of the Buchsbaum-Eisenbud-Horrocks conjecture which, loosely stated, predicts that modules with large annihilators must also have ``large'' syzygies. This conjecture was proved by the second author for rings of odd characteristic by taking advantage of the Adams operations on the category of perfect complexes with finite length homology. In this paper, we prove a stronger form of the Total Rank Conjecture for rings of characteristic two. This result may be seen as evidence that the Generalized Total Rank Conjecture (which is known to be false in odd characteristic) actually holds in characteristic two. We also formulate a meaningful extension of the Total Rank Conjecture over non Cohen-Macaulay rings and prove that this conjecture holds for any ring containing a field (independent of characteristic).

On Chow Rings of Quiver Moduli

Abstract:Abstract We describe the point class and Todd class in the Chow ring of a moduli space of quiver representations, building on a result of Ellingsrud–Strømme. This, together with the presentation of the Chow ring by the second author, makes it possible to compute integrals on quiver moduli. To do so, we construct a canonical morphism of universal representations in great generality, and along the way point out its relation to the Kodaira–Spencer morphism. We illustrate the results by computing some invariants of some “small” Kronecker moduli spaces. We also prove that the first non-trivial (6-dimensional) Kronecker moduli space is isomorphic to the zero locus of a general section of $\mathcal{Q}^{\vee }(1)$ on $\textrm{Gr}(2,8)$.

Higher Chow groups and not necessarily admissible cycles

Abstract:We construct some analog of cubical Bloch's higher Chow groups. Instead of considering cycles in $X\times\mathbb A^n$ we consider varieties $Y$ over $X$ together with a distinguished element in the $n$-th exterior power of the multiplicative group of the field of fraction on $Y$. This definition allows us to make sense of a cycle in $X\times\mathbb A^n$ intersecting faces improperly as an element in this complex. We prove that this complex is well-defined and study its basic properties: flat pullback, the localization sequence etc. As an application we prove that the cohomology of this complex in degrees $m-1, m$ and weight $m$ isomorphic to the cohomology of polylogarithmic complex.

Abstract:We answer two questions of Carrell on a singular complex projective variety admitting the multiplicative group action, one positively and the other negatively. The results are applied to Chow varieties and we obtain Chow groups of 0-cycles and Lawson homology groups of 1-cycles for Chow varieties. A brief survey on the structure of Chow varieties is included for comparison and completeness. Moreover, we give counterexamples to Shafarevich's problem on the rationality of the irreducible components of Chow varieties.

Abstract:The temperature dependence of the frequency dispersion in the sound velocity and damping of vitreous silica is reanalyzed. Thermally activated relaxation accounts for the sound attenuation observed above 10 K at sonic and ultrasonic frequencies. Its extrapolation to the hypersonic regime reveals that the anharmonic coupling to the thermal bath becomes important in Brillouin-scattering measurements. At 35 GHz and room temperature, the damping due to this anharmonicity is found to be nearly twice that produced by thermally activated relaxation. The analysis also reveals a sizeable velocity increase with temperature which is not related with sound dispersion. This suggests that silica experiences a gradual structural change that already starts well below room temperature.

Abstract:We provide a direct proof, valid in arbitrary characteristic, of the result originally proven by Kapranov over $\mathbb{C}$, that the Hilbert and Chow quotients $(\mathbb{P}^1)^n//PGL2$ are isomorphic to $\overline{M}_{0,n}$. In both cases this is done by explicitly constructing the universal family and then showing that the induced morphism is an isomorphism onto its image. The proofs of these results in many ways reduce to the case $n = 4$; in an appendix we outline a formalism of this phenomenon relating to certain operads.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime. We state characteristic $p$ analogues of the Mumford--Tate conjecture and the André--Oort conjecture for ordinary strata of mod $p$ Shimura varieties. We prove the conjectures for arbitrary products of GSpin Shimura varieties (and their subvarieties). Important subvarieties of GSpin Shimura varieties include modular and Shimura curves, Hilbert modular surfaces, $\mathrm{U}(1,n)$ unitary Shimura varieties, and moduli spaces of principally polarized Abelian and K3 surfaces. The two conjectures are both related to a notion of linearity for mod $p$ Shimura varieties, about which Chai has formulated the Tate-linear conjecture. Though seemingly different, the three conjectures are intricately entangled. We will first solve the Tate-linear conjecture for single GSpin Shimura varieties, above which we build the proof of the Tate-linear conjecture and the characteristic $p$ analogue of the Mumford--Tate conjecture for products of GSpin Shimura varieties. We then use the Tate-linear and the characteristic $p$ analogue of the Mumford--Tate conjectures to prove the characteristic $p$ analogue of the André--Oort conjecture. Our proof uses Chai's results on monodromy of $p$-divisible groups and rigidity theorems for formal tori, as well as Crew's parabolicity conjecture which is recently proven by D'Addezio.

Abstract:The Chow groups of codimension-p algebraic cycles modulo rational equivalence on a smooth algebraic variety X have steadfastly resisted the efforts of algebraic geometers to fathom their structure. This book explores a "linearization" approach to this problem, focusing on the infinitesimal structure of the Chow groups near their identity elements. This method was adumbrated in recent work of Mark Green and Phillip Griffiths. Similar topics have been explored by Bloch, Stienstra, Hesselholt, Van der Kallen, and others. A famous formula of Bloch expresses the Chow groups as Zariski sheaf cohomology groups of algebraic K-theory sheaves on X. "Linearization" of the Chow groups is thereby related to "linearization" of algebraic K-theory, which may be described in terms of negative cyclic homology. The "proper formal construction" arising from this approach is a "machine" involving the coniveau spectral sequences arising from four different generalized cohomology theories on X, with the last two sequences connected by the algebraic Chern character. Due to the critical role of the coniveau filtration, I refer to this construction as the coniveau machine. The main theorem in this book establishes the existence of the coniveau machine for algebraic K-theory on a smooth algebraic variety. An immediate corollary is a new formula expressing generalized tangent groups of Chow groups in terms of negative cyclic homology.

Abstract:Merkurjev's theorem--the statement that the 2-torsion of the Brauer group is represented by Clifford algebras of quadratic forms--is in general false when the base is no longer a field. The work of Parimala, Scharlau, and Sridharan proves the existence of smooth complete curves over local fields, over which Merkurjev's theorem is equivalent to the existence of a rational theta characteristic. Here, we prove that for smooth curves over a local field or surfaces over a finite field, replacing the Witt group by the total Witt group of all line bundle-valued quadratic forms recovers Merkurjev's theorem: the 2-torsion of the Brauer group is always represented by even Clifford algebras of line bundle-valued quadratic forms.

Abstract:We prove that the Göttsche-Schroeter and Schroeter-Shustin refined invariants specialize at $q=1$ to the enumeration of rational, resp. elliptic complex curves on arbitrary toric surfaces matching constraints that consist of points and of points with a contact element. Furthermore, we show that the refined invariant extends to the case of any genus $g\ge2$ and either one contact constraint or points in Mikhalkin position, and it again specializes to the corresponding characteristic number at $q=1$. In the appendix we show the limitations of extending this count to a more general setting.

Non-vanishing of Ceresa and Gross--Kudla--Schoen cycles associated to modular curves

Abstract:Given an algebraic curve $X$ of genus $\ge 3$, one can construct two algebraic $1$-cycles, the Ceresa cycle and the Gross-Kudla-Schoen modified diagonal cycle, each living in the Jacobian of $X$ and the triple product $X \times X \times X$ respectively. These two cycles are homologically trivial but are of infinite order in their corresponding Chow groups for a very general curve over $\mathbb{C}$. From the work of S-W Zhang, for a fixed curve these two cycles are non-torsion in their corresponding Chow groups if and only if one of them is. In this paper, we prove that the Ceresa and Gross-Kudla-Schoen cycles associated to a modular curve $X$ are non-torsion in the corresponding Chow groups when $X=\Gamma \backslash \overline{\mathbb{H}}$ for certain congruence subgroups $\Gamma\subset {\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. We obtain the result by studying a pullback formula for special divisors by the diagonal map $X \hookrightarrow X \times X$.
