Abstract:We show that if a separable Banach space has Kalton's property $(M^\ast)$, then all $\varepsilon$-Szlenk derivations of the dual unit ball are balls, however, in the case of the dual of Baernstein's space, all those Szlenk derivations are balls having the same radius as for $\ell_2$, yet this space fails property $(M^\ast)$. By estimating the radii of enveloping balls, we show that the Szlenk derivations are not balls for Tsirelson's space and the dual of Schlumprecht's space. Using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker theorem we prove that the same is true for the duals of certain sequential Orlicz spaces.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of isometric envelope of a subspace in a Banach space, establishing its connections with several key elements: (a) we explore its relation to the mean ergodic projection on fixed points within a semigroup of contractions, (b) we draw parallels with Korovkin sets from the 1970s, (c) we investigate its impact on the extension properties of linear isometric embeddings. We use this concept to address the recent conjecture that the Gurarij space and the spaces , are the only separable approximately ultrahomogeneous Banach spaces (a certain multidimensional transitivity of the action of the linear isometry group). The similar conjecture for Fraïssé Banach spaces (a strengthening of the approximately homogeneous property) is also considered. We characterize the Hilbert space as the only separable reflexive space in which any closed subspace coincides with its envelope; and we show that the Gurarij space satisfies the same property. We compute some envelopes in the case of Lebesgue spaces, showing that the reflexive -spaces are the only reflexive rearrangement invariant spaces on [0, 1] for which all 1-complemented subspaces are envelopes. We also identify the isometrically unique "full" quotient space of by a Hilbertian subspace, for appropriate values of p , as well as the associated topological group embedding of the unitary group into the isometry group of .

Abstract:We consider the optimization problem $(P_{A})$ $\inf_{x\in X}\{f(x)+g(Ax)\}$ where $f$ and $g$ are proper convex functions defined on locally convex Hausdorff topological vector spaces $X$ and $Y$, respectively, and $A$ is a linear operator from $X$ to $Y$. By using the properties of the epigraph of the conjugated functions, some sufficient and necessary conditions for the strong Fenchel duality and the strong converse Fenchel duality of $(P_{A})$ are provided. Sufficient and necessary conditions for the stable Fenchel duality and for the total Fenchel duality are also derived.

Abstract:The relationship between the convergence ball of the Euler iteration in Banach Spaces and its exclusive fixed points on Riemann spheres is investigated. By using an exclusive fixed point of the Euler iteration, the convergence ball is determined accurately for a class of operators whose derivatives satisfy some generalized Lipschitz condition on Banach spaces.

Abstract:The celebrated Dvoretzky theorem asserts that every $N$-dimensional convex body admits central sections of dimension $d = \Omega(\log N)$, which is nearly spherical. For many instances of convex bodies, typically unit balls with respect to some norm, much better lower bounds on $d$ have been obtained, with most research focusing on such lower bounds and on the degree of approximation of the section by a $k$-dimensional Euclidean ball. In this note we focus on another parameter, namely the radius of the approximating ball. We focus on the case of the unit ball of the space $\ell_1^N$ (the so-called cross-polytope), which is relevant to various questions of interest in theoretical computer science. We will also survey other instances where similar questions for other normed spaces (most often $\ell_p$-spaces or their non-commutative analogues) were found relevant to problems in various areas of mathematics and its applications, and state some open problems. Finally, in view of the computer science ramifications, we will comment on the algorithmic aspects of finding nearly spherical sections.

Delta-points and their implications for the geometry of Banach spaces

Abstract:We show that the Lipschitz-free space with the Radon--Nikodým property and a Daugavet point recently constructed by Veeorg is in fact a dual space isomorphic to $\ell_1$. Furthermore, we answer an open problem from the literature by showing that there exists a superreflexive space, in the form of a renorming of $\ell_2$, with a $\Delta$-point. Building on these two results, we are able to renorm every infinite-dimensional Banach space with a $\Delta$-point. Next, we establish powerful relations between existence of $\Delta$-points in Banach spaces and their duals. As an application, we obtain sharp results about the influence of $\Delta$-points for the asymptotic geometry of Banach spaces. In addition, we prove that if $X$ is a Banach space with a shrinking $k$-unconditional basis with $k < 2$, or if $X$ is a Hahn--Banach smooth space with a dual satisfying the Kadets--Klee property, then $X$ and its dual $X^*$ fail to contain $\Delta$-points. In particular, we get that no Lipschitz-free space with a Hahn--Banach smooth predual contains $\Delta$-points. Finally we present a purely metric characterization of the molecules in Lipschitz-free spaces that are $\Delta$-points, and we solve an open problem about representation of finitely supported $\Delta$-points in Lipschitz-free spaces.

Abstract:In this survey, we discuss volumetric and combinatorial results concerning (mostly finite) intersections or unions of balls (mostly of equal radii) in the $d$-dimensional real vector space, mostly equipped with the Euclidean norm. Our first topic is the Kneser-Poulsen Conjecture, according to which if a finite number of unit balls are rearranged so that the pairwise distances of the centers increase, then the volume of the union (resp., intersection) increases (resp., decreases). Next, we discuss Blaschke-Santaló type, and isoperimetric inequalities for convex sets in Euclidean $d$-space obtained as intersections of (possibly infinitely many) unit balls, which we call spindle convex sets. We present some results on spindle convex sets in the plane, with special attention paid to their approximation by the spindle convex hull of a finite subset. A ball-polyhedron is a convex body obtained as the intersection of finitely many unit balls in Euclidean $d$-space. We consider the combinatorial structure of their faces, and volumetric properties of ball polyhedra obtained from choosing the centers of the balls randomly.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{X} = \{ X_{\gamma} \}_{\gamma \in \Gamma}$ be a family of Banach spaces and let $\mathcal{E}$ be a Banach sequence space defined on $\Gamma$. The main aim of this work is to investigate the abstract Kadets--Klee properties, that is, the Kadets--Klee type properties in which the weak convergence of sequences is replaced by the convergence with respect to some linear Hausdorff topology, for the direct sum construction $(\bigoplus_{\gamma \in \Gamma} X_{\gamma})_{\mathcal{E}}$. As we will show, and this seems to be quite atypical behavior when compared to some other geometric properties, to lift the Kadets--Klee properties from the components to whole direct sum it is not enough to assume that all involved spaces have the appropriate Kadets--Klee property. Actually, to complete the picture one must add a dichotomy in the form of the Schur type properties for $X_{\gamma}$'s supplemented by the variant of strict monotonicity for $\mathcal{E}$. Back down to earth, this general machinery naturally provides a blue print for other topologies like, for example, the weak topology or the topology of local convergence in measure, that are perhaps more commonly associated with this type of considerations. Furthermore, by limiting ourselves to direct sums in which the family $\mathcal{X}$ is constant, that is, $X_{\gamma} = X$ for all $\gamma \in \Gamma$ and some Banach space $X$, we return to the well-explored ground of K{ö}the--Bochner sequence spaces $\mathcal{E}(X)$. Doing all this, we will reproduce, but sometimes also improve, essentially all existing results about the classical Kadets--Klee properties in K{ö}the--Bochner sequence spaces.

Abstract:We investigate the question whether the (I)-envelope of any subset of a dual to a Banach space $X$ may be described as the closed convex hull in a suitable topology. If $X$ contains no copy of $\ell^1$ then the weak topology generated by functionals of the first Baire class in the weak$^*$ topology works. On the other hand, if $X$ contains a complemented copy of $\ell^1$ or $X=C([0,1])$ no locally convex topology works. If we do not require the topology to be locally convex, the problem is still open. We further introduce and compare several natural intermediate closure operators on a dual Banach space. Finally, we collect several intringuing open problems related to (I)-envelopes.

Abstract:We introduce slicely countably determined points (SCD points) of a bounded and convex subset of a Banach space which extends the notions of denting points, strongly regular points and much more. We completely characterize SCD points in the unit balls of $L_1$-preduals. We study SCD points in direct sums of Banach spaces and obtain that an infinite sum of Banach spaces may have an SCD point despite the fact that none of its components have it. We then prove sufficient conditions to get that an elementary tensor $x\otimes y$ is an SCD point in the unit ball of the projective tensor product $X \widehat{\otimes}_\pi Y$. Regarding Lipschitz-free spaces on compact metric spaces, we show that norm one SCD points of their unit balls are exactly the ones that can be approximated by convex combinations of strongly exposed points of the unit ball. Finally, as applications, we prove a new inheritance result for the Daugavet property to its subspaces, we show that separable Banach spaces for which every convex series of slices intersects the unit sphere must contain an isomorphic copy of $\ell_1$, and we get pointwise conditions on an operator on a Banach space with the Daugavet property to satisfy the Daugavet equation.

Abstract:In this work we study three different versions of small diameter properties of the unit ball in a Banach space and its dual. The related concepts for all closed bounded convex sets of a Banach space was initiated and developed in \cite{B3}, \cite{BR} ,\cite{EW}, \cite{GM} was extensively studied in the context of dentability, huskability, Radon Nikodym Property and Krein Milman Property in \cite{GGMS}. We introduce the the Ball Huskable Property ($BHP$), namely, the unit ball has relatively weakly open subsets of arbitrarily small diameter. We compare this property to two related properties, $BSCSP$ namely, the unit ball has convex combination of slices of arbitrarily small diameter and $BDP$ namely, the closed unit ball has slices of arbitrarily small diameter. We show $BDP$ implies $BHP$ which in turn implies $BSCSP$ and none of the implications can be reversed. We prove similar results for the $w^*$-versions. We prove that all these properties are stable under $l_p$ sum for $1\leq p \leq \infty, c_0$ sum and Lebesgue Bochner spaces. Finally, we explore the stability of these with properties in the light of three space property. We show that $BHP$ is a three space property provided $X/Y$ is finite dimensional and same is true for $BSCSP$ when $X$ has $BSCSP$ and $X/Y$ is strongly regular (\cite{GGMS}).

Abstract:We prove that there exists an equivalent norm $\Vert\vert\cdot\vert\Vert$ on $L_\infty[0,1]$ with the following properties: (1) The unit ball of $(L_\infty[0,1],\Vert\vert\cdot\vert\Vert)$ contains non-empty relatively weakly open subsets of arbitrarily small diameter; (2) The set of Daugavet points of the unit ball of $(L_\infty[0,1],\Vert\vert\cdot\vert\Vert)$ is weakly dense; (3) The set of ccw $\Delta$-points of the unit ball of $(L_\infty[0,1],\Vert\vert\cdot\vert\Vert)$ is norming. We also show that there are points of the unit ball of $(L_\infty[0,1],\Vert\vert\cdot\vert\Vert)$ which are not $\Delta$-points, meaning that the space $(L_\infty[0,1],\Vert\vert\cdot\vert\Vert)$ fails the diametral local diameter 2 property. Finally, we observe that the space $(L_\infty[0,1],\Vert\vert\cdot\vert\Vert)$ provides both alternative and new examples that illustrate the differences between the various diametral notions for points of the unit ball of Banach spaces.

Abstract:To a complex projective structure Σ on a surface, Thurston associates a locally convex pleated surface. We derive bounds on the geometry of both in terms of the norms ‖ϕΣ‖∞ and ‖ϕΣ‖2 of the quadratic differential ϕΣ of Σ given by the Schwarzian derivative of the associated locally univalent map. We show that these give a unifying approach that generalizes a number of important, well-known results for convex cocompact hyperbolic structures on 3-manifolds, including bounds on the Lipschitz constant for the nearest-point retraction and the length of the bending lamination. We then use these bounds to begin a study of the Weil–Petersson gradient flow of renormalized volume on the space CC(N) of convex cocompact hyperbolic structures on a compact manifold N with incompressible boundary, leading to a proof of the conjecture that the renormalized volume has infimum given by one half the simplicial volume of DN, the double of N.

Abstract:Let K be a convex body in Rd in which a ball rolls freely and which slides freely in a ball. Let K(n) be the intersection of n i.i.d. random half‐spaces containing K chosen according to a certain prescribed probability distribution. We prove an asymptotic upper bound on the variance of the mean width of K(n) as n→∞ . We achieve this result by first proving an asymptotic upper bound on the variance of the weighted volume of random polytopes generated by n i.i.d. random points selected according to certain probability distributions, then, using polarity, we transfer this to the circumscribed model.

Abstract:We show that every Banach space containing isomorphic copies of $c_0$ can be equivalently renormed so that every nonempty relatively weakly open subset of its unit ball has diameter 2 and, however, its unit ball still contains convex combinations of slices with diameter arbitrarily small, which improves in a optimal way the known results about the size of this kind of subsets in Banach spaces.

Abstract:Let $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ be a domain, $\Gamma$ be a hyperplane intersecting it. Let $\varepsilon>0$, and $\Omega_\varepsilon=\Omega\setminus\overline{\Sigma_\varepsilon}$, where $\Sigma_\varepsilon$ ("sieve") is an $\varepsilon$-neighbourhood of $\Gamma$ punctured by many narrow passages. When $\varepsilon\to0$, the number of passages tends to infinity, while the diameters of their cross-sections tend to zero. For the case of identical straight periodically distributed and appropriately scaled passages T. Del Vecchio (1987) proved that the Neumann Laplacian on $\Omega_\varepsilon$ converges in a strong resolvent sense to the Laplacian on $\Omega\setminus\Gamma$ subject to the so-called $\delta'$-conditions on $\Gamma$. We will refine this result by deriving estimates on the rate of convergence in terms of various operator norms, and providing the estimate for the distance between the spectra. The assumptions we impose on the passages are rather general. For $n=2$ the results of T. Del Vecchio are not complete, some cases remain as open problems, and in this work we will fill these gaps.
