Abstract:The notion of ball convexity, considered in finite dimensional real Banach spaces, is a natural and useful extension of usual convexity; one replaces intersections of half-spaces by suitable intersections of balls. A subset $S$ of a normed space is called ball convex if it coincides with its ball hull, which is obtained as intersection of all balls (of fixed radius) containing $S$. Ball convex sets are closely related to notions like ball polytopes, complete sets, bodies of constant width, and spindle convexity. We will study geometric properties of ball convex bodies in normed spaces, for example deriving separation theorems, characterizations of strictly convex norms, and an application to complete sets. Our main results refer to minimal representations of ball convex bodies in terms of their ball exposed faces, to representations of ball hulls of sets via unions of ball hulls of finite subsets, and to ball convexity of increasing unions of ball convex bodies.

Abstract:One of the subjects of functional analysis is classification of Banach spaces depending on various properties of the unit ball. The need of such considerations comes from a number of applications to problems of mathematical analysis. The list of subjects contains: differential calculus in normed spaces, approximation theory, weak topologies and reflexivity, general theory of convexity and convex functions, metric fixed point theory, and others. The aim of this book is to present basic facts from this field. It is addressed to advanced undergraduate and graduate students interested in the subject. For some it may result in further interest, a continuation and deepening of their study of the subject. It may be also useful for instructors running courses on functional analysis, supervising diploma theses or essays on various levels.

Abstract:By a ball-covering B of a Banach space X, we mean a collection of open balls off the origin in X and whose union contains the unit sphere of X; a ball-covering, B is called minimal if its cardinality B-# is smallest among all ball-coverings of X. This article, through establishing a characterization for existence of a ball-covering in Banach spaces, shows that for every n is an element of N with k <= n there exists an n-dimensional space admitting a minimal ball-covering of n + k balls. As an application, we give a new characterization of superreflexive spaces in terms of ball-coverings. Finally, we show that every infinite-dimensional Banach space admits an equivalent norm such that there is an infinite-dimensional quotient space possessing a countable ball-covering.

Abstract:In this paper we study the space $\mathcal{M}$ of all nonempty compact metric spaces considered up to isometry, equipped with the Gromov--Hausdorff distance. We show that each ball in $\mathcal{M}$ with center at the one-point space is convex in the weak sense, i.e., every two points of such a ball can be joined by a shortest curve that belongs to this ball, however, such a ball is not convex in the strong sense: it is not true that every shortest curve joining the points of the ball belongs to this ball. We also show that a ball of sufficiently small radius with center at a space of general position is convex in the weak sense.

Abstract:Let X be a ball Banach function space on ℝ^n . In this article, under some mild extra assumptions about both X and the boundedness of the Hardy–Littlewood maximal operator on both X and the associate space of its convexification, the authors successfully recover the homogeneous ball Banach Sobolev semi-norm ‖ |∇ f| ‖ _X via the functional sup _λ∈ (0,∞ )λ[ ∫ _{y∈ℝ^n: |f(· )-f(y)|>λ |· -y|^1+γ/q}| · -y| ^γ -n dy] ^1/q _X for any distributions f with |∇ f|∈ X , as well as the corresponding limiting identities with the limit for λ→∞ when γ∈ (0,∞ ) or the limit for λ→ 0^+ when γ∈ (-∞ ,0) , where γ∈ℝ∖{0} and where q∈ (0,∞ ) is related to X . In particular, some of these results are still new even when X:=L^p(ℝ^n) with p∈ [1,∞ ) . As applications, the authors obtain some fractional Sobolev-type and some fractional Gagliardo–Nirenberg-type inequalities in the setting of X . All these results are of quite wide generality and are applied to various specific function spaces, including Morrey, mixed-norm (or variable or weighted) Lebesgue, Lorentz, and Orlicz (or Orlicz-slice) spaces, some of which are new even in all these special cases. The novelty of this article is to use both the method of the extrapolation and the boundedness of the Hardy–Littlewood maximal operator on both X and the associate space of its convexification to overcome the essential difficulties caused by the deficiency of both the translation and the rotation invariance and an explicit expression of the norm of X .

K(X)) be the family of nonempty bounded closed (resp. compact) subsets of X endowed with the Hausdorff distance and let BG(X) denote the closure of the set {A∈B(X):A∩G=∅} and KG(X)=BG(X)∩K(X). We introduce the admissible family A of B(X) and prove that EAo(G) (resp. EoA(G)), the set of all subsets F∈A⊆BG(X) (resp. F∈A⊆B(X)) such that the minimization problem min(F,G) (resp. the maximization problem max(F,G)) is well-posed, is a dense Gδ-subset of A. Furthermore, when X is uniformly convex, we prove that A⧹EAo(G) and A⧹EoA(G) are σ-porous in A.

Abstract:The relationship between the convergence ball of the Euler iteration in Banach Spaces and its exclusive fixed points on Riemann spheres is investigated. By using an exclusive fixed point of the Euler iteration, the convergence ball is determined accurately for a class of operators whose derivatives satisfy some generalized Lipschitz condition on Banach spaces.

Abstract:By a ball-covering B of a Banach space X , we mean that it is a collection of open balls off the origin whose union contains the sphere of the unit ball of X . The space X is said to have a ball-covering property, if it admits a ball-covering consisting of countably many balls. This paper, by constructing the equivalent norms on l ∞ , shows that ball-covering property is not invariant under isomorphic mappings, though it is preserved under such mappings if X is a Gateaux differentiability space; presents that this property of X is not heritable by its closed subspaces; and the property is also not preserved under quotient mappings.
A probabilistic approach to Lorentz balls

Abstract:We develop a probabilistic approach to study the volumetric and geometric properties of unit balls $\mathbb B_{q,1}^n$ of finite-dimensional Lorentz sequences spaces $\ell_{q,1}^n$. More precisely, we show that the empirical distribution of a random vector $X^{(n)}$ uniformly distributed on the volume normalized Lorentz ball in $\mathbb R^n$ converges weakly to a compactly supported symmetric probability distribution with explicitly given density; as a consequence we obtain a weak Poincaré-Maxwell-Borel principle for any fixed number $k\in\mathbb N$ of coordinates of $X^{(n)}$ as $n\to\infty$. Moreover, we prove a central limit theorem for the largest coordinate of $X^{(n)}$, demonstrating a quite different behavior than in the case of the $\ell_q^n$ balls, where a Gumbel distribution appears in the limit. Last but not least, we prove a Schechtman-Schmuckenschläger type result for the asymptotic volume of intersections of volume normalized Lorentz and $\ell^n_p$ balls.

Abstract:In this survey, we discuss volumetric and combinatorial results concerning (mostly finite) intersections or unions of balls (mostly of equal radii) in the $d$-dimensional real vector space, mostly equipped with the Euclidean norm. Our first topic is the Kneser-Poulsen Conjecture, according to which if a finite number of unit balls are rearranged so that the pairwise distances of the centers increase, then the volume of the union (resp., intersection) increases (resp., decreases). Next, we discuss Blaschke-Santaló type, and isoperimetric inequalities for convex sets in Euclidean $d$-space obtained as intersections of (possibly infinitely many) unit balls, which we call spindle convex sets. We present some results on spindle convex sets in the plane, with special attention paid to their approximation by the spindle convex hull of a finite subset. A ball-polyhedron is a convex body obtained as the intersection of finitely many unit balls in Euclidean $d$-space. We consider the combinatorial structure of their faces, and volumetric properties of ball polyhedra obtained from choosing the centers of the balls randomly.

Abstract:Let p∈ [1,∞ ) and X be a ball Banach function space on ℝ^n with an absolutely continuous norm for which the Hardy–Littlewood maximal operator is bounded on (X^1/p)' , the associate (dual) space of its 1/ p -convexification. The purpose of this work is to establish the fundamental formula lim _ s→ 1^- (1-s) [ ∫ _ℝ^n|f(· )-f(y)|^p/|· -y|^n+sp dy] ^1/p ^p_X = 2 π ^n-1/2Γ( p+1/2) /p Γ( p+n/2) |∇ f| ^p_X for any f∈ X , where Γ is the Gamma function. This identity coincides with the celebrated classical formula of Bourgain, Brezis, and Mironescu [ 12 , 22 ] when X=L^p(ℝ^n) , but it is new for general X , in particular for X=L^q(ℝ^n) ( 1≤ p< q<∞ ). Translation invariance plays a vital role in the proof of this formula in its aforementioned standard proofs in [ 12 , 22 ]. But translation invariance may not be valid for ball Banach function spaces, nor is there an explicit expression for the associate norm. The authors overcome these obstacles via a key weighted estimate, obtained using fine geometric properties of adjacent systems of dyadic cubes, and Poincaré’s inequality. This estimate is then combined with harmonic analysis tools, such as extrapolation and the boundedness of the Hardy–Littlewood maximal operator, to derive the desired formula. Applications of this limiting identity yield new characterizations of ball Banach Sobolev spaces. Explicit spaces X for which these results apply are Morrey spaces, mixed-norm (resp., weighted or variable) Lebesgue spaces, Orlicz(-slice) (or generalized amalgam) spaces, and Lorentz spaces.
Maximal noncompactness of limiting Sobolev embeddings

Abstract:We develop a new method suitable for establishing lower bounds on the ball measure of noncompactness of operators acting between considerably general quasinormed function spaces. This new method removes some of the restrictions oft-presented in the previous work. Most notably, the target function space need not be disjointly superadditive nor equipped with a norm. Instead, a property that is far more often at our disposal is exploited, namely the absolute continuity of the target quasinorm. We use this new method to prove that limiting Sobolev embeddings into spaces of Brezis--Wainger type are so-called maximally noncompact, i.e., their ball measure of noncompactness is the worst possible.

The Banach-Tarski paradox for some subsets of finite-dimensional normed spaces over non-Archimedean valued fields

Abstract:We show some results related to the classical Banach-Tarski paradox in the setting of finite-dimensional normed spaces over a non-Archimedean valued field $K$. For instance, all balls and spheres in $K^n$, and the whole space $K^n$ (for $n\ge 2$) are paradoxical with respect to certain groups of isometries of $K^n$. If $K$ is locally compact (e.g., $K$ is the field $\mathbb{Q}_p$ of $p$-adic numbers for any prime number $p$), any two bounded subsets of $K^n$ with nonempty interiors are equidecomposable (and paradoxical) with respect to a certain group of isometries of $K^n$ (for $n\ge 2$).

Abstract:We show that if a separable Banach space has Kalton's property $(M^\ast)$, then all $\varepsilon$-Szlenk derivations of the dual unit ball are balls, however, in the case of the dual of Baernstein's space, all those Szlenk derivations are balls having the same radius as for $\ell_2$, yet this space fails property $(M^\ast)$. By estimating the radii of enveloping balls, we show that the Szlenk derivations are not balls for Tsirelson's space and the dual of Schlumprecht's space. Using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker theorem we prove that the same is true for the duals of certain sequential Orlicz spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, some extrapolations on ball Banach function spaces are established. As applications, we obtain the boundedness of fractional spherical maximal operators, fractional integral operators with rough kernels, spherical maximal operators, strongly singular integral operators and maximal Bochner–Riesz operators on ball Banach function spaces. Finally, we apply these boundedness results to two concrete examples of ball Banach function spaces, namely, variable Lebesgue spaces and mixed-norm Lebesgue spaces.

Abstract:Given a finite covering by closed convex sets of $B_X$, the unit ball of an infinite-dimensional Banach space, we investigate whether there is a set of the covering that contains balls of radius close to $1$ and (a) arbitrarily high finite dimension or (b) infinite dimension. In case (a) the answer is affirmative, but for the case (b) we just get radius close to $1/2$ and finite codimension under much more restrictive hypotheses.

Abstract:About ten years ago, Schmuckenschläger proved that the lowest eigenvalue of Dirichlet Laplacian for the intersection of two balls (i.e., convex, symmetric and compact subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with non-empty interior) is less than the sum of the lowest eigenvalue for each. His arguments rely on Kac's formula, the log-concavity of Gaussian measures, the symmetry of balls and Lieb's classical result for the intersection of two domains. In this note we revisit Schmuckenschläger's proof and propose a direct and elementary Lieb-free approach to these inequalities.
