Abstract:We introduce two new local l_1-indices of the same type as the Bourgain l_1 index; the l_1^+-index and the l_1^+-weakly null index. We show that the l_1^+-weakly null index of a Banach space X is the same as the Szlenk index of X, provided X does not contain l_1. The l_1^+-weakly null index has the same form as the Bourgain l_1 index: if it is countable it must take values omega^alpha for some alpha<omega_1. The different l_1-indices are closely related and so knowing the Szlenk index of a Banach space helps us calculate its local l_1-index, via the l_1^+-weakly null index. We show that I(C(omega^{omega^alpha}))=omega^{1+alpha+1}.

Abstract:We compute the Szlenk index of an arbitrary projective tensor product $C(K)\widehat{\otimes}_\pi C(L)$ of spaces $C(K), C(L)$ of continuous functions on scattered, compact, Hausdorff spaces. In particular, we show that it is simply equal to the maximum of the Szlenk indices of the spaces $C(K), C(L)$. We deduce several results regarding non-isomorphism of $C(K)\widehat{\otimes}_\pi C(L)$ and $C(M)$ or $C(M)\widehat{\otimes}_\pi C(N)$ for particular choices of $K,L,M,N$.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal A$ be a infinite dimensional C*-algebra and $1<p<\infty$. We compute the Szlenk index of $\mathcal A$ and $L_p(\mathcal A)$, and show that $Sz(\mathcal A)=\Gamma'(i(\mathcal A))$ and $Dz(\mathcal A)=Sz(L_p(\mathcal A))=\omega Sz(\mathcal A)=\omega\Gamma'(i(\mathcal A))$, where $i(\mathcal A)$ is the noncommutative Cantor-Bendixson index, $\Gamma'(\xi)$ is the minimum ordinal number which is greater than $\xi$ of the form $\omega^\zeta$ for some $\zeta$ and we agree that $\Gamma'(\infty)=\infty$ and $\omega\cdot\infty=\infty$. As a application, we compute the Szlenk index [respectively, $w^\ast$-dentability index] of a C*-tensor product $\mathcal A\otimes_\beta\mathcal B$ of non-zero C*-algebras $\mathcal A$ and $\mathcal B$ in terms of $Sz(\mathcal A)$ and $Sz(\mathcal B)$ [respectively, $Dz(\mathcal A)$ and $Dz(\mathcal B)$]. When $\mathcal A$ is a separable C*-algebra, we show that there exists $a\in \mathcal A_h$ such that $Sz(\mathcal A)=Sz(C^\ast(a))$ and $Dz(\mathcal A)=Dz(C^\ast(a))$, where $C^\ast(a)$ is the C*-subalgebra of $\mathcal A$ generated by $a$.

Abstract:We show that if a separable Banach space has Kalton's property $(M^\ast)$, then all $\varepsilon$-Szlenk derivations of the dual unit ball are balls, however, in the case of the dual of Baernstein's space, all those Szlenk derivations are balls having the same radius as for $\ell_2$, yet this space fails property $(M^\ast)$. By estimating the radii of enveloping balls, we show that the Szlenk derivations are not balls for Tsirelson's space and the dual of Schlumprecht's space. Using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker theorem we prove that the same is true for the duals of certain sequential Orlicz spaces.

Abstract:We introduce the weaker forms of the Scheepers property, namely almost Scheepers (${\sf aS}$), weakly Scheepers in the sense of Sakai (${\sf wS}$) and weakly Scheepers in the sense of Kočinac (${\sf wS_k}$). We explore many topological properties of the weaker forms of the Scheepers property and present few illustrative examples to make distinction between these spaces. Certain situations are considered when all the weaker forms are equivalent. We also make investigations on the weak variations as considered in this paper concerning cardinalities. In particular we observe that 1. If every finite power of a space $X$ is ${\sf aM}$ (respectively, ${\sf wM}$), then $X$ is ${\sf aS}$ (respectively, ${\sf wS}$). 2. Every almost Lindelöf space of cardinality less than $\mathfrak{d}$ is ${\sf aS}$. 3. Let $X$ be Lindelöf and $\kappa<\mathfrak d$. If $X$ is a union of $\kappa$ many ${\sf aH}$ (respectively, ${\sf wH}$, ${\sf wH_k}$) spaces, then $X$ is ${\sf aS}$ (respectively, ${\sf wS}$, ${\sf wS_k}$). 4. The Alexandroff duplicate $AD(X)$ of a space $X$ has the Scheepers property if and only if $AD(X)$ has the ${\sf wS_k}$ property. 5. If $AD(X)$ is ${\sf aS}$ (respectively, ${\sf wS}$), then $X$ is also ${\sf aS}$ (respectively, ${\sf wS}$). Besides, few observations on productively ${\sf aS}$, productively ${\sf wS}$ and productively ${\sf wS_k}$ spaces are presented. Some open problems are also given.

Abstract:Properties of Lipschitz and d.c. surfaces of finite codimension in a Banach space and properties of generated σ-ideals are studied. These σ-ideals naturally appear in the differentiation theory and in the abstract approximation theory. Using these properties, we improve an unpublished result of M. Heisler which gives an alternative proof of a result of D. Preiss on singular points of convex functions.

Abstract:We use (versions of) the von Neumann inequality for Hilbert space contractions to prove several Schwarz-Pick inequalities. Specifically, we derive an alternate proof for a multi-point Schwarz-Pick inequality by Beardon and Minda, along with a generalized version for operators. Connections with model spaces and Peschl's invariant derivatives are established. Finally, Schwarz-Pick inequalities for analytic functions on polydisks and for higher order derivatives are discussed. An enhanced version of the Schwarz-Pick lemma, using the notion of distinguished variety, is obtained for the bidisk.

A note on the spaces of Eisenstein series on general congruence subgroups

Abstract:This article proposes a new approach to study the spectral Eisenstein series of weight $k$ on a congruence subgroup of $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ using Hecke's theory of Eisenstein series for the principal congruence subgroups. Our method provides a gateway to analytic and arithmetic properties of the spectral Eisenstein series using corresponding results for the principal congruence subgroup. We show that the specializations of the weight $k$ spectral Eisenstein series at $s = 0$ give rise to a basis for the space of Eisenstein series on a general congruence subgroup. A variant of this construction provides an algorithmically computable basis with algebraic Fourier coefficients for the same space. Our philosophy also yields an explicit basis parameterized by cusps for the space of Eisenstein series with nebentypus. We use this basis to generalize Hida's Eichler-Shimura isomorphism theorem for modular forms with nebentypus to almost all nebentypus characters and levels.

Abstract:In this paper we give a simpler proof of the $L^p$-Schwartz space isomorphism $(0< p\leq 2)$ under the Fourier transform for the class of functions of left $\delta$-type on a Riemannian symmetric space of rank one. Our treatment rests on Anker's \cite{A} proof of the corresponding result in the case of left $K$-invariant functions on $X$. Thus we give a proof which relies only on the Paley--Wiener theorem.

Closed ideals of operators on the Baernstein and Schreier spaces

Abstract:We study the lattice of closed ideals of bounded operators on two families of Banach spaces: the Baernstein spaces $B_p$ for $1<p<\infty$ and the Schreier spaces $S_p$ for $1\le p<\infty$. Our main conclusion is that there are $2^{\mathfrak{c}}$ many closed ideals that lie between the ideals of compact and strictly singular operators on each of these spaces, and also $2^{\mathfrak{c}}$ many closed ideals that contain projections of infinite rank. Counterparts of results of Gasparis and Leung using a numerical index to distinguish the isomorphism types of subspaces spanned by subsequences of the unit vector basis for the higher-order Schreier spaces play a key role in the proofs, as does the Johnson-Schechtman technique for constructing $2^{\mathfrak{c}}$ many closed ideals of operators on a Banach space.

Abstract:We investigate connections between upper/lower estimates for Banach lattices and the notion of relative s-decomposability, which has roots in interpolation theory. To get a characterization of relatively s-decomposable Banach lattices in terms of the above estimates, we assign to each Banach lattice X two sequence spaces XU and XL that are largely determined by the set of p, for which lp is finitely lattice representable in X. As an application, we obtain an orbital factorization of relative K-functional estimates for Banach couples (X0, X1) and (Y0, Y1) through some suitable couples of weighted Lp-spaces provided if Xi, Yi are relatively s-decomposable for i = 0, 1. Also, we undertake a detailed study of the properties of optimal upper and lower sequence spaces XU and XL, and, in particular, prove that these spaces are rearrangement invariant. In the Appendix, a description of the optimal upper sequence space for a separable Orlicz space as a certain intersection of some special Musielak-Orlicz sequence spaces is given

Abstract:Sukochev and Zanin resolved an open problem due to B. Simon concerning optimal constants in Hölder inequality for the weak Schatten classes of compact operators. In this note we observe that these constants, by introducing the modified weak Schatten quasi-norms, can be renormalised so that the original Simon's conjecture (with optimal constant 1) does hold. We also provide an unexpectedly simple proof for the modified Hölder inequality and its sharpness.

Abstract:In this paper we study the subspace of functions in Bloch space that vanish at $\bfi:=(0^{\prime},i)$ (denoted by $\widetilde{\calB}$) on the Siegel upper half-space of $\bbC^n$. We find that the functions in $\widetilde{\calB}$ possess the following uniqueness property: if $f\in \widetilde{\calB}$ and $\bfL^{\alpha} f\equiv 0$ for some nonnegative multi-index $\alpha$, then $f\equiv 0$, where $\bfL^{\alpha}:=(\bfL_1)^{\alpha_1} \cdots (\bfL_n)^{\alpha_n}$ with $\bfL_j = \partial_j + 2i \bar{z}_j \partial_n$ for $j=1,\ldots, n-1$ and $\bfL_n = \partial_n$. We establish a new integral representation for functions in $\widetilde{\calB}$. This enables us to relate the Bloch semi-norm to a ``derivative semi-norm''. Duality problems about $\widetilde{\calB}$ are considered, in particular we identify $\widetilde{\calB}_0$ as the predual of $A^1(\calU)$. Also, we discuss the Mackey topology of Bergman spaces and Hardy spaces for $0<p<1$.

Abstract:We consider Bochner–Riesz means on weighted spaces, at the critical index . For every -weight we obtain an extension of Vargas' weak type (1, 1) inequality in some range of . To prove this result we establish new endpoint results for sparse domination. These are almost optimal in dimension ; partial results as well as conditional results are proved in higher dimensions. For the means of index we prove fully optimal sparse bounds.

Abstract:Singular numbers of operators between Hilbert spaces were generalized to Banach spaces by s-numbers (in the sense of Pietsch). This allows for different choices, including approximation, Gelfand, Kolmogorov and Bernstein numbers. Here, we present an elementary proof of a bound between the smallest and the largest s-number.

Measuring the convexity of compact sumsets with the Schneider non-convexity index

Abstract:In recent work, Franck Barthe and Mokshay Madiman introduced the concept of the Lyusternik region, denoted by $\Lambda_{n}(m)$, to better understand volumes of sumsets. They gave a characterization of $\Lambda_{n}(2)$ (the volumes of compact sets in $\mathbb{R}^n$ when at most $m=2$ sets are added together) and proved that Lebesgue measure satisfies a fractional superadditive property. We attempt to imitate the idea of the Lyusternik region by defining a region based on the Schneider non-convexity index function, which was originally defined by Rolf Schneider in 1975. We call this region the Schneider region, denoted by $S_{n}(m)$. In this paper, we will give an initial characterization of the region $S_{1}(2)$ and in doing so, we will prove that the Schneider non-convexity index of a sumset $c(A_1+A_2)$ has a best lower bound in terms of $c(A_1)$ and $c(A_2)$. We will pose some open questions about extending this lower bound to higher dimensions and large sums. We will also show that, analogous to Lebesgue measure, the Schneider non-convexity index has a fractional subadditive property. Regarding the Lyusternik region, we will show that when the number of sets being added is $m\geq3$, that the region $\Lambda_{n}(m)$ is not closed, proving a new qualitative property for the region.
