Abstract:The mitigation of human-induced climate change is of crucial importance for the sustainability of humankind. For this aim the RPC community has exerted considerable effort over the last decade to reduce the greenhouse gases emission from RPC detectors. These included searching for new eco-friendly gases, implementing recovery and/or recirculation systems, improving gas tightness and using new materials and approaches in detector conception and operation for the reduction of gas flow rates. Along this line of work, we present here an RPC architecture aimed at a dramatic reduction of gas use in chambers meant for low particle rate (below ten of Hz⋅cm −2 ) operation. Two glass chambers were tested for more than six months with zero gas flow, showing no evidence of time-related effects, allowing to consider that permanently sealed RPCs may be within reach, with obvious practical and environmental advantages.

Abstract:Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) are gaseous detectors widely used in high energy physics experiments, operating with a gas mixture primarily containing Tetrafluoroethane (C$_{2}$H$_{2}$F$_{4}$), commonly known as R-134a, which has a global warming potential (GWP) of 1430. To comply with European regulations and explore environmentally friendly alternatives, the RPC EcoGas@GIF++ collaboration, involving ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, LHCb/SHiP, and EP-DT communities, has undertaken intensive R\&D efforts to explore new gas mixtures for RPC technology.

Abstract:Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) have shown stable operation at the Large Hadron Collider and satisfactory efficiency for the entire Run 1 (2010-2013) and Run 2 (2015-2018) with C$_{2}$H$_{2}$F$_{4}$-based gas mixtures and the addition of SF$_{6}$ and i-C$_{4}$H$_{10}$. Since its global warming potential (GWP) is high, C$_{2}$H$_{2}$F$_{4}$ is phasing out of production due to recent European Union regulations and as a result its cost is progressively increasing. Therefore, finding a new RPC gas mixture with a low GWP has become extremely important. This contribution describes the simulation of the RPC efficiency with tetrafluoropropene C$_{3}$H$_{2}$F$_{4}$ (HFO1234ze), a hydrofluoroolefin with very low GWP. Simulation results are systematically compared with measurements of RPC efficiency in C$_{3}$H$_{2}$F$_{4}$-based gas mixtures with the addition of different combinations of Ar, He, CO$_{2}$, O$_{2}$ and i-C$_{4}$H$_{10}$ in various concentrations. This simulation allows the study of the interplay between C$_{3}$H$_{2}$F$_{4}$ and the other gas components in the mixture as well as may allow the identification of the most promising environment-friendly gas mixtures with C$_{3}$H$_{2}$F$_{4}$ for RPCs.

Abstract:Resistive Plate Chamber detectors are largely used in current High Energy Physics experiments, typically operated in avalanche mode with large fractions of Tetrafluoroethane (C2H2F4), a gas recently banned by the European Union due to its high Global Warming Potential (GWP). An intense R&D activity is ongoing to improve RPC technology in view of future HEP applications. In the last few years the RPC EcoGas@GIF++ Collaboration has been putting in place a joint effort between the ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, LHCb/SHiP and EP-DT Communities to investigate the performance of present and future RPC generations with eco-friendly gas mixtures. Detectors with different layout and electronics have been operated with ecological gas mixtures, with and without irradiation at the CERN Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF++). Results of these performance studies together with plans for an aging test campaign are discussed in this article.

Abstract:The Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPC) are used as a timing detector in several particle physics and cosmic ray experiments. The gas mixture of MRPC at current experiments is a mixture containing $\rm C_2F_4H_2$ and in some cases $\rm SF_6$. $\rm C_2F_4H_2$ and $\rm SF_6$ have a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 1430 and 23900 respectively, therefore they are classified as greenhouse gases. The studies to reduce the amount of emission of the greenhouse gas in high energy experiments are underway; the present contribution has been performed as part of this effort. The results have been obtained from the beam test of a small MRPC which has 6 gaps of 220 $\mu$m and an sensitive area of 20 $\times$ 20 cm$^2$. It has been operated with the ecological HFO-1234ze gas ($\rm C_3F_4H_2$), and with the $\rm C_2F_4H_2/SF_6$ mixture. We have found that the ecological gas can substitute for the $\rm C_2F_4H_2$-based gas mixture without significantly compromising the current level of performance.

Abstract:The Resistive Plate Chambers standard mixture, mainly based on C 2 H 2 F 4 , has a high Global Warming Potential (GWP) and therefore the search for RPC eco friendly gases is mandatory. In fact if some additional restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions will be imposed or if this gas becomes too expensive due to a reduction on the industrial demand, it will be impossible to use it anymore. The main problem is that the detector already installed in the experiments can not work properly with the eco-friendly gases already studied and for this reason the search for a suitable eco-friendly gas mixture is crucial. In this work we present the results on the detector performance in terms of efficiency, prompt and ionic charge, with different gas mixtures.

Abstract:This research investigates the viability of replacing greenhouse gases C 2 H 2 F 4 and SF 6 with eco-friendly gas mixtures in Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) detectors used at CERN LHC experiments. The study focuses on the addition of CO 2 as a substitute of C 2 H 2 F 4 to minimize greenhouse gas emissions and reduce operational costs. Initial performance studies with cosmic muons evaluate key parameters such as efficiency, current, streamer probability, prompt charge, cluster size, and time resolution of the detectors. Subsequent assessments take place at the CERN Gamma Irradiation Facility, emulating the LHC experiment background radiation. Furthermore, the study explores alternatives to SF 6 , including 3M NOVEC TM 4710 and AMOLEA TM 1224yd, presenting perforances results about these gas alternatives in High Pressure Laminate RPCs.

Abstract:The current operation of the Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) system within the CMS experiment involves approximately 95% tetrafluoroethane (C 2 H 2 F 4 , TFE). However, in response to climate change concerns, the European Union has instituted a ban on TFE owing to its elevated Global Warming Potential (GWP), resulting in an associated increase in market prices. In this framework, shared endeavors within the RPC EcoGas@GIF++ Collaboration, have been dedicated to investigating novel ecological gaseous mixtures based on tetrafluoropropene (C 3 H 2 F 4 , HFO-1234ze) to ensure the sustainable functionality of RPCs. This presentation will delve into the performance outcomes derived from improved RPC gas gaps operating on HFO/CO 2 -based mixtures as ecologically viable alternatives, particularly in anticipation of the High Luminosity LHC phase (HL-LHC). Additionally, the utilization of TFE/CO 2 mixtures will be explored as a pragmatic strategy to swiftly alleviate gas-related operational costs.

Abstract:Due to their simplicity and comparatively low cost Resistive Plate Chambers are gaseous detectors widely used in high-energy and cosmic rays physics when large detection areas are needed. However, the best gaseous mixtures are currently based on tetrafluoroethane, which has the undesirable characteristic of a large Global Warming Potential (GWP) of about 1400 and because of this, it is currently being phased out from industrial use. As a possible replacement, tetrafluoropropene (which has a GWP close to 1) has been taken into account. Since tetrafluoropropene is more electronegative than tetrafluoroethane, it has to be diluted with gases with a lower attachment coefficient in order to maintain the operating voltage close to 10 kV. One of the main candidates for this role is carbon dioxide. In order to ascertain the feasibility and the performance of tetrafluoropropene-CO2 based mixtures, an R&D program is being carried out in the ALICE collaboration, which employs an array of 72 Bakelite RPCs (Muon Identifier, MID) to identify muons. Different proportions of tetrafluoropropene and CO2, with the addition of small quantities of isobutane and sulphur hexafluoride, have been tested with 50x50 cm2 RPC prototypes with 2 mm wide gas gap and 2 mm thick Bakelite electrodes. In the presentation, results from tests with cosmic rays will be presented, together with data concerning the current drawn by a RPC exposed to the gamma-ray flux of the Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF) at CERN.

Abstract:Results obtained by the RPC ECOgas@GIF++ Collaboration, using Resistive Plate Chambers operated with new, eco-friendly gas mixtures, based on tetrafluoropropene and carbon dioxide, are shown and discussed in this paper. Tests aimed to assess the performance of this kind of detectors in high-irradiation conditions, analogous to the ones foreseen for the coming years at the Large Hadron Collider experiments, were performed, and demonstrate a performance basically similar to the one obtained with the gas mixtures currently in use, based on tetrafluoroethane, which is being progressively phased out for its possible contribution to the greenhouse effect. Long term aging tests are also being carried out, with the goal to demonstrate the possibility of using these eco-friendly gas mixtures during the whole High Luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider.

Abstract:Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) has been conventionally used as an insulating gas in switchgear. However, owing to its high Global-warming Potential (GWP), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) calls for its replacement with alternative gases. In this work, hydrofluoroolefine HFO-1336mzzE is analyzed as an alternative, due to its good dielectric strength and low GWP. For this purpose, the influence of electric discharges on the stability of this gas in mixtures with vector gases (air, CO2 and N2) at 20% (v/v) was studied, and the influence of humidity (0, 200, and 500 ppm) and temperature (25 °C, 60 and 120 °C) was determined. Electric arc discharge was conducted by a gas-insulated medium voltage switchgear prototype specifically designed for this work. Its main characteristic is the uniform distribution of the dissipated energy, facilitating better reproducibility of the results. The degradation of HFO-1336mzzE was monitored by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS) sampling in addition to online measurement using Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR). The degradation rate (DR) was measured by assessing the concentrations of the different degradation gases occurring in each experiment. The results were evaluated by using density functional theory (DFT) and transition state theory (TS). Finally, the DR analysis was completed with a study of coke formation for prolonged discharge periods. The gas mixture containing CO2 showed a higher stability compared to those containing air or N2, with temperature being the most decisive factor. A declining trend in the degradation rate tending toward stabilization was observed, rendering CO2 the preferred carrier gas.

Abstract:This paper presents experimental results of RPCs performances with different working gas mixtures. Owing to Freon's high global warming potential, its threat to RPCs aging and its large consumption in large particle physics experiments, studies to minimize the concentration of HFC-134A, and even its complete replacement, have been undertaken. In addition, the reduction of iso-butane is also a favorable strategy, due to the flammability level of the gas mixture. Freon-less working gas mixture of Ar/HFC-134A/i-C4H10/CO2=20/0/8/72 was chosen with plateau efficiency of 86.3% and noise rate of 0.61 Hz/cm(2). For working gas with lower ratio of Freon, Ar/HFC-134A/i-C4H10/CO2=20/20/8/52 was suggested with plateau efficiency of 91.0% and noise rate of 0.19 Hz/cm(2), in which Freon was decreased by 22% compared to the BESIII RPC gas mixture. Furthermore, iso-butane was decreased to 6% with RPC's efficiency of 90% and noise rate of 0.20 Hz/cm(2) achieved. Finally, the explanation of RPC's different performances at various working gas mixtures has been validated by the investigation of secondary streamers. This study will be helpful for RPC's application in future large particle physics experiments, in which RPCs can run in streamer mode.

Abstract:A Comparative study has been performed on Resistive Plate Chambers made of different grades of bakelite paper laminates, produced and commercially available in India. The chambers, operated in the streamer mode using argon : tetrafluroethane : isobutane in 34:59:7 mixing ratio, are tested with cosmic rays for the efficiency and the stability with cosmic rays. A particular grade of bakelite (P-120, NEMA LI-1989 Grade XXX), used for high voltage insulation in humid conditions, was found to give satisfactory performance with stable efficiency of > 96% continuously for more than 110 days. A silicone treatment of the inner surfaces of the bakelite RPC is found to be necessary for operation of the detector.

R&D studies on eco-friendly gas mixtures for the ALICE Muon Identifier

Abstract:Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs), used for the Muon Spectrometer of the ALICE experiment at CERN LHC, are currently operated in maxi-avalanche mode with a low threshold value and without amplification in the front-end electronics. RPC detectors have shown a good operation stability with the current gas mixture during the entire Run 1 (2010$-$2013) and the ongoing Run 2 (2015$-$2018) at the LHC. The gas mixture is made up of $C_{2}H_{2}F_{4}$, $SF_{6}$ and $iC_{4}H_{10}$. Since the first two gases have high Global Warming Potentials (GWPs), there is the risk that they will be phased out of production in the next years, due to the recent restrictions and regulations of the European Union. Therefore, finding a new eco-friendly gas mixture has become extremely important in order to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases. In addition, the present $iC_{4}H_{10}$ contribution makes the current gas mixture flammable. Non-flammable components, or at least in non-flammable concentrations, would be advisable to make the operation of detectors simpler and safer. In order to identify a gas mixture suited to cope with the requirements of the ALICE Muon Identifier in the forthcoming High-Luminosity runs, a dedicated experimental set-up has been used to carry out R&D studies on promising gas mixtures with small-size RPCs. Hydrofluoroolefins ($HFOs$) are appropriate candidates to replace the $C_{2}H_{2}F_{4}$ thanks to their very low GWPs, especially $HFO1234ze$ which is not flammable at room temperature. Several tests on $HFO$-based mixtures with addition of various gases are ongoing and encouraging results have already been obtained. Furthermore, the use of $CO_{2}$ as a quencher has been studied as it might represent a valid solution to avoid flammability of the mixture. Finally, medium-term stability of detectors exposed to the cosmic-ray flux will be shown in this paper.

Abstract:Clathrate hydrates recently find important practical applications in the capture and recovery of green-house gases, cold storage and refrigeration systems. Nevertheless, their properties at microscopic scale remains largely insufficient yet. Herein, the structure and stability of clathrate hydrates encapsulating fluorinated methane derivatives under mechanical load are investigated by molecular dynamics simula-tions. All investigated clathrate hydrates are structurally stable host-guest molecular crystals yet show distinct structural and mechanical behaviors. Lattice constant of those clathrate hydrates is dictated by the size and dipole moment of fluorinated methane, for example, it is initially enlarged with increasing fluorine atom in the methane guest molecule but followed by reduction as the guest molecule becomes tetrafluoromethane. However, clathrate hydrates encapsulating non-polar fluorinated methane show superior mechanical properties over those encapsulating polar ones. Polar fluorinated methane deriva-tives@clathrate cages exhibit distinct rotational dynamics that are influenced by strain. Moreover, all studied clathrate hydrates are mechanically failed by fractures of water cage accompanied by formation of unconventional clathrate cages. Those findings give insights into understanding the structural, thermo-dynamic stability and mechanical properties of clathrate hydrates encapsulating fluorinated guests.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Large Resistive Plate Chamber systems have their roots in High Energy Physics experiments at the European Organization for Nuclear Research: ATLAS, CMS and ALICE, where hundreds of square meters of both trigger and timing RPCs have been deployed. These devices operate with complex gas systems, equipped with re-circulation and purification units, which require a fresh gas supply of the order of 6 cm 3 /min/m 2 , creating logistical, technical and financial problems. In this communication, we present a new concept in the construction of RPCs which allowed us to operate a detector at ultra-low gas flow regime. With this new approach, the glass stack is encapsulated in a tight plastic box made of polypropylene, which presents excellent water vapor blocking properties as well as a good protection against atmospheric gases.

Abstract:In this paper we would like to present a few characteristics of the Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) made of a particular grade of bakelite paper laminates (P-120, NEMA LI-1989 Grade XXX), produced and commercially available in India. This particular grade is used for high voltage insulation in humid conditions. The chambers are tested with cosmic rays in the streamer mode using argon, tetrafluroethane and isobutane in 34:59:7 mixing ratio. In the first set of detectors made with such grade, a thin coating of silicone fluid on the inner surfaces of the bakelite was found to be necessary for operation of the detector. Those silicone coated RPCs were found to give satisfactory performance with stable efficiency of >90% continuously for a long period as reported earlier. Results of the crosstalk measurement of these silicone coated RPC will be presented in this paper. Very recently RPCs made with the same grade of bakelite but having better surface finish, are found to give equivalent performance even without any coating inside. Preliminary results of this type of RPCs are also being presented.

Abstract:A large (240 cm × 120 cm × 0.2 cm) oil-free High Pressure Laminate (HPL), commonly referred as ``bakelite'', Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) has been developed at VECC-Kolkata using locally available P-302 OLTC grade HPL. The chamber has been operated in streamer mode using Argon, Freon(R134a) and Iso-butane in a ratio of 34:57:9 by volume. The electrodes and glue samples have been characterised by measuring their electrical parameters like bulk resistivity and surface resistivity. The performance of the chamber has been studied by measuring the efficiency, its uniformity and stability in detection of cosmic muons. Timing measurement has been performed at a central location of the chamber. The chamber showed an efficiency >95% and time resolution (σ), at the point of measurement, ∼0.83 ns at 9000 V. Details of the material characterisation, fabrication procedure and performance studies have been discussed.
