Abstract:This article is based on a talk at the RIEMain in Contact conference in Cagliari, Italy in honor of the 78th birthday of David Blair one of the founders of modern Riemannian contact geometry. The present article is a survey of a special type of Riemannian contact structure known as Sasakian geometry. An ultimate goal of this survey is to understand the moduli of classes of Sasakian structures as well as the moduli of extremal and constant scalar curvature Sasaki metrics, and in particular the moduli of Sasaki-Einstein metrics.

Abstract:Leonardo’s mathematical notes bear witness to a work in progress and allow us to look directly into the mind of the writer. In Leonardo we find two of the three fundamental classical geometric problems: the duplication of the cube and the quadrature of the circle. While Leonardo is extremely familiar with two-dimensional geometry problems, and proposes playful graphic exercises of adding and subtracting polygonal surfaces of all kinds, he is still unable to solve the problem of the duplication of the cube. Numerous pages testify of the attempt to rise above planar geometry and reach the realm of the third dimension, but Leonardo always bumps against the limits of quantity calculation possibilities of his age.

Abstract:We describe a relationship between work of Gatto, Laksov, and their collaborators on realizations of (generalized) Schubert calculus of Grassmannians, and the geometric Satake correspondence of Lusztig, Ginzburg, and Mirković and Vilonen. Along the way we obtain new proofs of equivariant Giambelli formulas for the ordinary and orthogonal Grassmannians, as well as a simple derivation of the “rim-hook” rule for computing in the equivariant quantum cohomology of the Grassmannian.

Abstract:The following notes are intended to make a small digression on the topics mentioned in the title of the same, since these were not addressed in the past tribute by the Institute of Physics of the UdeA. We believe more than platitude try to justify the importance and effectiveness in the development of mathematics and physics during the eighteenth century and present such issues, therefore a brief description of the methods and problems attacked by Euler and his contemporaries using the heuristics. Note in advance that they constitute a strong impoverished attempt to honor the memory of who is considered the Shakespeare of Mathematics: Universal, rich in detail and inexhaustible.

Abstract:Phys and Math are two colleagues at the University of Saçenbon (Crefan Kingdom), dialoguing about the remarkable efficiency of mathematics for physics. They talk about the notches on the Ishango bone and the various uses of psi in maths and physics; they arrive at dessins d’enfants, moonshine concepts, Rademacher sums and their significance in the quantum world. You should not miss their eccentric proposal of relating Bell’s theorem to the Baby Monster group. Their hyperbolic polygons show a considerable singularity/cusp structure that our modern age of computers is able to capture. Henri Poincaré would have been happy to see it.

Abstract:In a series of lectures given in 2003 soon after receiving the Fields Medal for his results in the Algebraic Geometry Vladimir Voevodsky (1966-2017) identifies two strategic goals for mathematics, which he plans to pursue in his further research. The first goal is to develop a "computerised library of mathematical knowledge", which supports an automated proof-verification. The second goal is to "bridge pure and applied mathematics". Voevodsky's research towards the first goal brought about the new Univalent foundations of mathematics. In view of the second goal Voevodsky in 2004 started to develop a mathematical theory of Population Dynamics, which involved the Categorical Probability theory. This latter project did not bring published results and was abandoned by Voevodsky in 2009 when he decided to focus his efforts on the Univalent foundations and closely related topics. In the present paper, which is based on Voevodsky's archival sources, I present Voevodsky's views of mathematics and its relationships with natural sciences, critically discuss these views, and suggest how Voevodsky's ideas and approaches in the applied mathematics can be further developed and pursued. A special attention is given to Voevodsky's original strategy to bridge the persisting gap between the pure and applied mathematics where computers and the computer-assisted mathematics have a major role.

Abstract:The two of us have shared a fascination with James Victor Uspensky's 1937 textbook $Introduction \, to \, Mathematical \, Probability$ ever since our graduate student days: it contains many interesting results not found in other books on the same subject in the English language, together with many non-trivial examples, all clearly stated with careful proofs. We present some of Uspensky's gems to a modern audience hoping to tempt others to read Uspensky for themselves, as well as report on a few of the other mathematical topics he also wrote about (for example, his book on number theory contains early results about perfect shuffles). Uspensky led an interesting life: a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, he spoke at the 1924 International Congress of Mathematicians in Toronto before leaving Russia in 1929 and coming to the US and Stanford. Comparatively little has been written about him in English; the second half of this paper attempts to remedy this.
