Abstract:A cut in a digraph $D=(V,A)$ is a set of arcs $\{uv \in A: u\in U, v\notin U\}$, for some $U\subseteq V$. It is known that the arc set $A$ is covered by $k$ cuts if and only if it admits a $k$-coloring such that no two consecutive arcs $uv, vw$ receive the same color. Alon, Bollobás, Gyárfás, Lehel and Scott (2007) observed that every acyclic digraph of maximum indegree at most $\binom{k}{\lfloor k/2 \rfloor}-1$ is covered by $k$ cuts. We prove that this degree condition is best possible (if an enormous outdegree is allowed). Notably, for $k\geq 5$, powers of directed paths do not suffice as extremal examples. Instead, we locate the maximum $d$ such that the $d$-th power of an arbitrarily long directed path is covered by $k$ cuts between $(1-o(1)) \frac{1}{e} 2^k$ and $\frac{1}{2}2^k-2$. Let $k\geq 3$ and $D$ be an acyclic digraph that is not covered by $k$ cuts. We prove that the decision problem whether a digraph that admits a homomorphism to $D$ is covered by $k$ cuts is NP-complete. If $k=3$ and $D$ is the third power of the directed path on 12 vertices, then even the restriction to planar digraphs of maximum indegree and outdegree $3$ holds.

Abstract:Given two $k$-uniform hypergraphs $F$ and $G$, we say that $G$ has an $F$-covering if for every vertex in $G$ there is a copy of $F$ covering it. For $1\leq i\leq k-1$, the minimum $i$-degree $\delta_i(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum integer such that every $i$ vertices are contained in at least $\delta_i(G)$ edges. Let $c_i(n,F)$ be the largest minimum $i$-degree among all $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraphs that have no $F$-covering. In this paper, we consider the $F$-covering problem in $3$-uniform hypergraphs when $F$ is the generalized triangle $T$, where $T$ is a $3$-uniform hypergraph with the vertex set $\{v_1,v_2,v_3,v_4,v_5\}$ and the edge set $\{\{v_{1}v_{2}v_{3}\},\{v_{1}v_{2}v_{4}\},\{v_{3}v_{4}v_{5}\}\}$. We give the exact value of $c_2(n,T)$ and asymptotically determine $c_1(n,T)$. We also consider the $F$-covering problem in $3$-uniform hypergraphs when $F$ are some trees, such as the linear $k$-path $P_k$ and the star $S_k$. Especially, we provide bounds of $c_i(n,P_k)$ and $c_i(n,S_k)$ for $k\geq 3$, where $i=1,2$.

Path Odd-Covers of Graphs

Abstract:We introduce and study "path odd-covers", a weakening of Gallai's path decomposition problem and a strengthening of the linear arboricity problem. The "path odd-cover number" $p_2(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a collection of paths whose vertex sets are contained in $V(G)$ and whose symmetric difference of edge sets is $E(G)$. We prove an upper bound on $p_2(G)$ in terms of the maximum degree $\Delta$ and the number of odd-degree vertices $v_{\text{odd}}$ of the form $\max\left\{v_{\text{odd}}/{2}, 2\left\lceil {\Delta}/{2}\right \rceil\right\}$. This bound is only a factor of $2$ from a rather immediate lower bound of the form $\max \left\{ {v_{\text{odd}} }/{2} , \left\lceil {\Delta}/{2}\right\rceil \right\}$. We also investigate some natural relaxations of the problem which highlight the connection between the path odd-cover number and other well-known graph parameters. For example, when allowing for subdivisions of $G$, the previously mentioned lower bound is always tight except in some trivial cases. Further, a relaxation that allows for the addition of isolated vertices to $G$ leads to a match with the linear arboricity when $G$ is Eulerian. Finally, we transfer our observations to establish analogous results for cycle odd-covers.

Abstract:The n -dimensional HSDC with the logic graph Hn is one of the most attractive server-centric data center networks for high incremental scalability. The routing design in network topology is very important for information transmission. In particular, the application of disjoint path covers can solve various problems such as program code optimization and mapping parallel programs to parallel structures. Hn consists of 2n cliques and each two vertices in a clique are adjacent. For any vertex sets {x,u} and {y,v} in W and B , respectively, and any two disjoint vertex sets A1,A2 in some clique, where (W,B) is a bipartition of Hn , in this paper, we prove that, when |Ai|≠1 and Ai∩{x,y,u,v}=∅ for i=1,2 , if |A1∪A2|≤n−3 , then there exists an (x,y) -path P1 and a (u,v) -path P2 in Hn passing through A1 and A2 , respectively, such that P1 and P2 have no common vertices and P1∪P2 contains all vertices of Hn . Then P1∪P2 is called the 2-disjoint path cover in Hn and we propose the efficient algorithms for the path design. Furthermore, we prove that our main result is optimal.

Abstract:Graph theoretical ideas are highly utilized by computer science fields especially data mining. In this field, a data structure can be designed in the form of graph. Covering is a widely used form of data representation in data mining and covering-based rough sets provide a systematic approach to this type of representation. In this paper, we study the connectedness of graphs through covering-based rough sets and apply it to connected matroids. First, we present an approach to inducing a covering by a graph, and then study the connectedness of the graph from the viewpoint of covering approximation operators. Second, we construct a graph from a matroid, and find the matroid and the graph have the same connectedness, which makes us to use covering-based rough sets to study connected matroids. In summary, this paper provides a new approach to studying graph theory and matroid theory.

Abstract:A point-disjoint path cover of a directed graph is a collection of point-disjoint paths (some paths possibly having zero length) which covers all the points. A path cover which minimizes the number of paths corresponds to an optimal sequence of the steps of a computer program for efficient coding and documentation. The minimization problem for the general directed graph is hard in the sense of being NP-complete. In the case of cycle-free digraphs, however, the problem is polynomial, for it is shown that it can be reduced to the maximum-matching problem. A heuristic given here for finding a near optimal path cover for the general case is based upon applying the maximum-matching algorithm to the subgraphs of an interval decomposition.

Abstract:Given a graph, the general problem to cover the maximum number of vertices by a collection of vertex-disjoint long paths seems to escape from the literature. A path containing at least k vertices is considered long. When , the problem is polynomial time solvable; when k is the total number of vertices, the problem reduces to the Hamiltonian path problem, which is NP-complete. For a fixed , the problem is NP-hard and the best known approximation algorithm for the weighted set packing problem implies a k -approximation algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, there is no approximation algorithm directly designed for the general problem; when , the problem admits a 4-approximation algorithm which was presented recently. We propose the first -approximation algorithm for the general problem and an improved 2-approximation algorithm when . Both algorithms are based on local improvement, and their theoretical performance analyses are done via amortization and their practical performance is examined through simulation studies.

Abstract:Given a graph G , let S and T be two disjoint vertex subsets of equal size k in G . A many-to-many k -disjoint path cover of G joining S and T is a set of k vertex-disjoint paths between S and T that altogether cover every vertex of the graph. It is said to be paired if each vertex of S must be joined to a designated vertex of T , or unpaired otherwise. Let Γn be a Cayley graph generated by a transposition tree with bipartition V0 and V1 . Let S⊆V0 and T⊆V1 be two vertex subsets of equal size two. It is shown in this paper that Γn has an unpaired many-to-many two-disjoint path cover joining S and T with at most n−4 faulty edges, where n≥4 . The result is optimal with respect to the degree of Γn . As applications, the edge fault-tolerant two-disjoint path covers for the star network, bubble-sort network and modified bubble-sort network are derived.

Abstract:The dichromatic number $\vec{\chi}(G)$ of a digraph $G$ is the least integer $k$ such that $G$ can be partitioned into $k$ acyclic digraphs. A digraph is $k$-dicritical if $\vec{\chi}(G) = k$ and each proper subgraph $H$ of $G$ satisfies $\vec{\chi}(H) \leq k-1$. We prove various bounds on the minimum number of arcs in a $k$-dicritical digraph, a structural result on $k$-dicritical digraphs and a result on list-dicolouring. We characterise $3$-dicritical digraphs $G$ with $(k-1)|V(G)| + 1$ arcs. For $k \geq 4$, we characterise $k$-dicritical digraphs $G$ on at least $k+1$ vertices and with $(k-1)|V(G)| + k-3$ arcs, generalising a result of Dirac. We prove that, for $k \geq 5$, every $k$-dicritical digraph $G$ has at least $(k-\frac 1 2 - \frac 1 {k-1}) |V(G)| - k(\frac 1 2 - \frac 1 {k-1})$ arcs, which is the best known lower bound. We prove that the number of connected components induced by the vertices of degree $2(k-1)$ of a $k$-dicritical digraph is at most the number of connected components in the rest of the digraph, generalising a result of Stiebitz. Finally, we generalise a Theorem of Thomassen on list-chromatic number of undirected graphs to list-dichromatic number of digraphs.

Abstract:Given a collection $\mathcal{G} =\{G_1,G_2,\dots,G_m\}$ of graphs on the common vertex set $V$ of size $n$, an $m$-edge graph $H$ on the same vertex set $V$ is transversal in $\mathcal{G}$ if there exists a bijection $\varphi :E(H)\rightarrow [m]$ such that $e \in E(G_{\varphi(e)})$ for all $e\in E(H)$. Denote $\delta(\mathcal{G}):=\operatorname*{min}\left\{\delta(G_i): i\in [m]\right\}$. In this paper, we first establish a minimum degree condition for the existence of transversal Hamilton paths in $\mathcal{G}$: if $n=m+1$ and $\delta(\mathcal{G})\geq \frac{n-1}{2}$, then $\mathcal{G}$ contains a transversal Hamilton path. This solves a problem proposed by [Li, Li and Li, J. Graph Theory, 2023]. As a continuation of the transversal version of Dirac's theorem [Joos and Kim, Bull. Lond. Math. Soc., 2020] and the stability result for transversal Hamilton cycles [Cheng and Staden, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2403.09913v1" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2403.09913v1">arXiv:2403.09913v1</a>], our second result characterizes all graph collections with minimum degree at least $\frac{n}{2}-1$ and without transversal Hamilton cycles. We obtain an analogous result for transversal Hamilton paths. The proof is a combination of the stability result for transversal Hamilton paths or cycles, transversal blow-up lemma, along with some structural analysis.

Abstract:In graph theory, a packing within graph G is defined as a collection H={H1,H2} , where H1 and H2 are both equivalent to G , yet they exist as edge-disjoint subgraphs within Kn . Considering a positive integer k , we introduce Dk , a set comprising graphs within G , each with a maximum degree not exceeding k . Extending the concept of a packing, a near packing that accommodates Dk in graph G emerges, realized by overlapping two iterations of G . In this configuration, the intersecting subgraph formed by edges shared in both G copies is a member of Dk . The notation m(n,Dk) represents the highest possible value of m , ensuring each graph with order n and size at most m can incorporate a near packing that accommodates Dk . A notable case is m(n,D0)=n−2 , highlighting that a near packing which admits D0 equates to a standard packing. This paper focuses on establishing the value of m(n,D1)=⌊3n−52⌋ .

Abstract:In the Directed $k$-Chinese Postman Problem ($k$-DCPP), we are given a connected weighted digraph $G$ and asked to find $k$ non-empty closed directed walks covering all arcs of $G$ such that the total weight of the walks is minimum. Gutin, Muciaccia and Yeo (Theor. Comput. Sci. 513 (2013) 124--128) asked for the parameterized complexity of $k$-DCPP when $k$ is the parameter. We prove that the $k$-DCPP is fixed-parameter tractable. We also consider a related problem of finding $k$ arc-disjoint directed cycles in an Euler digraph, parameterized by $k$. Slivkins (ESA 2003) showed that this problem is W[1]-hard for general digraphs. Generalizing another result by Slivkins, we prove that the problem is fixed-parameter tractable for Euler digraphs. The corresponding problem on vertex-disjoint cycles in Euler digraphs remains W[1]-hard even for Euler digraphs.

Abstract:Given a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $n$ vertices, an even cover in $H$ is a collection of hyperedges that touch each vertex an even number of times. Even covers are a generalization of cycles in graphs and are equivalent to linearly dependent subsets of a system of linear equations modulo $2$. As a result, they arise naturally in the context of well-studied questions in coding theory and refuting unsatisfiable $k$-SAT formulas. Analogous to the irregular Moore bound of Alon, Hoory, and Linial (2002), in 2008, Feige conjectured an extremal trade-off between the number of hyperedges and the length of the smallest even cover in a $k$-uniform hypergraph. This conjecture was recently settled up to a multiplicative logarithmic factor in the number of hyperedges (Guruswami, Kothari, and 1Manohar 2022 and Hsieh, Kothari, and Mohanty 2023). These works introduce the new technique that relates hypergraph even covers to cycles in the associated \emph{Kikuchi} graphs. Their analysis of these Kikuchi graphs, especially for odd $k$, is rather involved and relies on matrix concentration inequalities.

Proof a conjecture on connectivity keeping odd paths in k-connected bipartite graphs

Abstract:Luo, Tian and Wu (2022) conjectured that for any tree $T$ with bipartition $X$ and $Y$, every $k$-connected bipartite graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $k+t$, where $t=$max$\{|X|,|Y|\}$, contains a tree $T'\cong T$ such that $G-V(T')$ is still $k$-connected. Note that $t=\lceil\frac{m}{2}\rceil$ when the tree $T$ is the path with order $m$. In this paper, we proved that every $k$-connected bipartite graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $k+ \lceil\frac{m+1}{2}\rceil$ contains a path $P$ of order $m$ such that $G-V(P)$ remains $k$-connected. This shows that the conjecture is true for paths with odd order. And for paths with even order, the minimum degree bound in this paper is the bound in the conjecture plus one.

DP-Coloring of Graphs from Random Covers

Abstract:DP-coloring (also called correspondence coloring) of graphs is a generalization of list coloring that has been widely studied since its introduction by Dvořák and Postle in $2015$. DP-coloring of a graph $G$ is equivalent to an independent transversal of a DP-cover of $G$. Intuitively, a $k$-fold DP-cover of a graph $G$ is an assignment of lists of size $k$ to the vertices of $G$ where the names of colors vary from edge to edge. In this paper, we introduce the notion of random DP-covers and study the behavior of DP-coloring from such random covers. We prove a series of results about the probability that a graph is or is not DP-colorable from a random cover. These results support the following threshold behavior on random $k$-fold DP-covers as $\rho\to\infty$ where $\rho$ is the maximum density of a graph: graphs are non-DP-colorable with high probability when $k$ is sufficiently smaller than $\rho/\ln\rho$, and graphs are DP-colorable with high probability when $k$ is sufficiently larger than $\rho/\ln\rho$. Our results depend on $\rho$ growing fast enough and imply a sharp threshold for dense enough graphs. For sparser graphs, we analyze DP-colorability in terms of degeneracy. We also prove fractional DP-coloring analogs to these results.

Abstract:Recently, the authors gave Ramsey-type results for the path cover/partition number of graphs. In this paper, we continue the research about them focusing on digraphs, and find a relationship between the path cover/partition number and forbidden structures in digraphs. Let $D$ be a weakly connected digraph. A family $\mathcal{P}$ of subdigraphs of $D$ is called a {\it path cover} (resp. a {\it path partition}) of $D$ if $\bigcup _{P\in \mathcal{P}}V(P)=V(D)$ (resp. $\dot\bigcup _{P\in \mathcal{P}}V(P)=V(D)$) and every element of $\mathcal{P}$ is a directed path. The minimum cardinality of a path cover (resp. a path partition) of $D$ is denoted by ${\rm pc}(D)$ (resp. ${\rm pp}(D)$). In this paper, we find forbidden structure conditions assuring us that ${\rm pc}(D)$ (or ${\rm pp}(D)$) is bounded by a constant.

Abstract:Let be a digraph. For an integer , a k - arc-connected flip is an arc subset of D such that after reversing the arcs in it the digraph becomes (strongly) k -arc-connected. The first main result of this paper introduces a sufficient condition for the existence of a k -arc-connected flip that is also a submodular flow for a crossing submodular function. More specifically, given some integer , suppose for all , where and denote the number of arcs in A leaving and entering U , respectively. Let be a crossing family over ground set V , and let be a crossing submodular function such that for all . Then D has a k -arc-connected flip J such that for all . The result has several applications to Graph Orientations and Combinatorial Optimization. In particular, it strengthens Nash-Williams' so-called weak orientation theorem , and proves a weaker variant of Woodall's conjecture on digraphs whose underlying undirected graph is -edge-connected. The second main result of this paper is even more general. It introduces a sufficient condition for the existence of capacitated integral solutions to the intersection of two submodular flow systems. This sufficient condition implies the classic result of Edmonds and Giles on the box-total dual integrality of a submodular flow system. It also has the consequence that in a weakly connected digraph, the intersection of two submodular flow systems is totally dual integral.
