Abstract:Finding out if neutrinos are Dirac or Majorana particles is known to be extremely difficult due to the smallness of neutrino mass and the fact that in the limit m ν = 0 both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos become Weyl fermions, i.e. are indistinguishable. There have been suggestions in the literature that in the case of processes with production of a neutrino-antineutrino pair (if neutrinos are Dirac particles) or two neutrinos (if they are of Majorana nature) quantum statistics may be of help. This is because for Majorana neutrinos quantum indistinguishability of identical particles requires the amplitude of the process to be antisymmetrized with respect to the interchange of the final-state neutrinos, whereas no such antisymmetrization must be done for Dirac neutrinos. It has been claimed that the resulting differences between the cross sections for Dirac and Majorana neutrinos persist even for arbitrarily small but not exactly vanishing neutrino mass. We demonstrate that, at least in the framework of the Standard Model, this is not the case. We also give a general proof that within the Standard Model quantum statistics does not help tell Dirac and Majorana neutrinos apart in the limit of negligibly small m ν / E .

Abstract:In <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2305.14140" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2305.14140">arXiv:2305.14140</a> [hep-ph] the authors analyze the radiative leptonic decay $\ell^- \to \nu_\ell \, \overline{\nu}_{\ell'} \, \ell^{\prime -} \, \gamma$ to distinguish between Dirac and Majorana nature of neutrinos. They utilize the back-to-back kinematics for this purpose, a special kinematic configuration which we first proposed in our paper <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2106.11785" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2106.11785">arXiv:2106.11785</a> [hep-ph]. Here we point out how and why their analysis of the back-to-back configuration is incorrect. This makes their conclusion and comments invalid and untenable.

Abstract:A novel method to differentiate the effects of Dirac and Majorana (D-M) neutrinos in four-body decays has been discussed in [C. S. Kim et al. , Inferring the nature of active neutrinos: Dirac or Majorana?, Phys. Rev. D 105 , 113006 (2022).]. There, it is concluded that the back-to-back kinematic scenario seems to avoid the constraint imposed by the "practical Dirac-Majorana confusion theorem," as one does not need to fully integrate over neutrino and antineutrino momenta. In this paper, we propose to analyze radiative leptonic lepton-decays ( l→l′νν ̄γ ), as an independent alternative process to study the possible Majorana nature of neutrinos. Our approach demonstrates that, in the back-to-back kinematic configuration (for the l′−γ and ν−ν ̄ systems, respectively), the distinction between Dirac and Majorana cases disappears when the inaccessible neutrino angle is integrated out, which might appear unexpected considering the claims in [C. S. Kim et al. , Inferring the nature of active neutrinos: Dirac or Majorana?, Phys. Rev. D 105 , 113006 (2022).]. Practical Dirac Majorana confusion theorem: Issues and Applicability

Abstract:We inspect the model-independent study of practical Dirac Majorana confusion theorem (pDMCT) -- a wide spread belief that the difference between Dirac and Majorana neutrinos via any kinematical observable would be practically impossible to determine because of the difference only being proportional to the square of neutrino mass -- in context of processes that have at least a neutrino antineutrino pair in their final state. We scrutinize the domain of applicability of pDMCT and also highlight those aspects that are often misunderstood. We try to clarify some of the frequently used concepts that are used to assert pDMCT as a generic feature irrespective of the process, or observable, such as the existence of any analytic continuity between Dirac and Majorana neutrinos in the limit mass(neutrino) -> 0. In summary, we illustrate that pDMCT is not any fundamental property of neutrinos, instead, it is a phenomenological feature of neutrino non-observation, depending on models and processes.

On the existence of quaternion-handedness for the spinor solutions of the Dirac and Majorana neutrinos

Abstract:This study explores the application of quaternionic left and right-handed algebraic frameworks to discuss the neutrino-handedness behavior. The generalized left and right-handed Dirac equations are expressed in terms of quaternionic four-dimensional non-commutative algebra, which yields helicity eigenspinors with definite spin states for Dirac neutrino eigenstates. We establish the spinor states of energy and momentum solutions for Dirac neutrinos and antineutrinos revealed by the non-commutative nature of quaternionic algebra. Furthermore, we expand the quaternionic Dirac spinor solutions to Majorana-like spinor solutions, which represent the mass eigenstates for Majorana neutrinos. By examining two-flavor neutrino oscillation, we express the quaternionic energy and momentum eigenstates of Dirac and Majorana neutrinos, as well as their oscillation probabilities. The estimated quaternionic-based probability supports neutrinos' massive nature and the presence of their right chiral components. The current quaternionic theory has the benefit of identifying the distinct properties of left and right-handed neutrinos, as well as anti-neutrinos, within a unified framework.

Abstract:We conduct a model-independent analysis of the distinct signatures of various generic new physics possibilities in the decay $B \to K \, \nu \, \overline{\nu}$ by analyzing the branching ratio as well as the missing mass-square distribution. Considering the final neutrinos to be of the same flavor with non-zero mass, we discuss the new physics contributions for both Dirac and Majorana neutrino possibilities. In our study, we utilize the analytical relations among form factors in semi-leptonic $B \to K$ transitions, which are consistent with current lattice QCD predictions to a very high numerical accuracy. We provide constraints on different new physics parameters, taking into account the recent measurement of $B^+ \to K^+ \, \nu \, \overline{\nu}$ branching ratio by the Belle-II collaboration. In future, if the missing mass-square distribution for $B^+ \to K^+ \, \nu \, \overline{\nu}$ decay gets reported by Belle-II with analysis of more events than their present data set, one can not only investigate possible new physics effects in these decays, but also probe the Dirac/Majorana nature of the neutrinos using quantum statistics, since a difference between the two cases is known to exist in the presence of non-standard neutrino interactions.

Abstract:We propose a new method toward distinguishing the Dirac versus Majorana nature of neutrino masses from the spectrum of gravitational waves (GWs) associated with neutrino mass genesis. Motivated by the principle of generating small neutrino masses without tiny Yukawa couplings, we assume generic seesaw mechanisms for both Majorana and Dirac neutrino masses. For Majorana neutrinos, we further assume a spontaneously broken gauged U(1)B−L symmetry, independently of the type of Majorana seesaw mechanism, which gives a cosmic string induced GW signal flat over a wide range of frequencies. For Dirac neutrinos, we assume the spontaneous breaking of a Z2 symmetry, the minimal symmetry choice associated with all Dirac seesaw mechanisms, which is softly broken, generating a peaked GW spectrum from the annihilation of the resulting domain walls. In fact, the GW spectra for all types of Dirac seesaws with such a broken Z2 symmetry are identical, subject to a mild caveat. As an illustrative example, we study the simplest respective type-I seesaw mechanisms, and show that the striking difference in the shapes of the GW spectra can help differentiate between these Dirac and Majorana seesaws, complementing results of neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. Abstract:Finding out if neutrinos are Dirac or Majorana particles is known to be extremely difficult. This is generally believed to be due to the smallness of the neutrino mass compared to typical neutrino energies, and to the fact that in the limit of vanishing mass all distinctions between Dirac and Majorana neutrinos disappear. This, however, does not necessarily mean that for non-relativistic neutrinos distinguishing between them is an easy task. We consider this problem in detail. The issues discussed include the possibilities of studying neutrino nature with non-relativistic neutrinos produced in $\beta$ decay in direct neutrino mass measurement experiments and with relic neutrinos, as well as with slow neutrinos in pair production processes and in scattering, both elastic and inelastic. We also discuss processes allowed for only one of the two neutrino types as a means of uncovering neutrino nature.

Abstract:The conflict between the determinism of geometry in general relativity and the essential statistics of quantum mechanics blocks the development of a unified theory. Electromagnetic radiation is essential to both fields and supplies a common meeting ground. It is proposed that a suitable mechanism to resolve these differences can be based on the use of a time-symmetric treatment for the radiation. Advanced fields of the absorber can be interpreted to supply the random character of spontaneous emission. This allows the statistics of the Born rule to come from the spontaneous emission that occurs during a physical measurement. When the absorber is included, quantum mechanics is completely deterministic. It is suggested that the peculiar properties of kaons may be induced by the advanced effects of the neutrino field. Schrödinger's cat loses its enigmatic personality and the identification of mental processes as an essential component of a measurement is no longer needed.

Abstract:Quantum critical phenomena may be qualitatively different when massless Dirac fermions are present at criticality. Using our recently-discovered fermion-sign-free Majorana quantum Monte Carlo method introduced by us in (Li et al 2015 Phys. Rev. B 91 241117), we investigate the quantum critical phenomena of spinless Dirac fermions at their charge-density-wave phase transitions on the honeycomb lattice having N s = 2 L 2 ?> sites with largest L = 24. By finite-size scaling, we accurately obtain critical exponents of this so-called Gross–Neveu chiral-Ising universality class of two (two-component) Dirac fermions in 2+1D: &eegr; = 0.45 ( 2 ) ?> , &ngr; = 0.77 ( 3 ) ?> , and β = 0.60 ( 3 ) ?> , which are qualitatively different from the mean-field results but are reasonably close to the ones obtained from renormalization group calculations.

Abstract:Abstract Neutrino oscillation is an important physical phenomenon in elementary particle physics, and its nonclassical features can be revealed by the Leggett–Garg inequality. It shows that its quantum coherence can be sustained over astrophysical length scales. In this work, we investigate the measure of quantumness in experimentally observed neutrino oscillations via the nonlocal advantage of quantum coherence (NAQC), quantum steering, and Bell nonlocality. From various neutrino sources, ensembles of reactor and accelerator neutrinos are analyzed at distinct energies, such as Daya Bay (0.5 km and 1.6 km) and MINOS (735 km) collaborations. The NAQC of two-flavor neutrino oscillation is characterized experimentally compared to the theoretical prediction. It exhibits non-monotonously evolutive phenomenon with the increase of energy. Furthermore, it is found that the NAQC is a stronger quantum correlation than quantum steering and Bell nonlocality even in the order of km. Hence, for an arbitrary bipartite neutrino-flavor state with achieving a NAQC, it must be also a steerable and Bell nonlocal state. The results might offer an insight into the neutrino oscillation for the further applications on quantum information processing.
Distinguishing between Dirac and Majorana neutrinos using temporal correlations

Abstract:In the context of two flavour neutrino oscillations, it is understood that the $2\times 2$ mixing matrix is parameterized by one angle and a Majorana phase. However, this phase does not impact the oscillation probabilities in vacuum or in matter with constant density. Interestingly, the Majorana phase becomes relevant when we describe neutrino oscillations along with neutrino decay. This is due to the fact that effective Hamiltonian has Hermitian and anti-Hermitian components which cannot be simultaneously diagonalized (resulting in decay eigenstates being different from the mass eigenstates). We consider the $\cal PT$ symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonian describing two flavour neutrino case and study the violation of Leggett-Garg Inequalities (LGI) in this context for the first time. We demonstrate that temporal correlations in the form of LGI allow us to probe whether neutrinos are Dirac or Majorana. We elucidate the role played by the mixing and decay parameters on the extent of violation of LGI. We emphasize that for optimized choice of parameters, the difference in $K_4$ ($K_3$) for Dirac and Majorana case is $\sim 15\%$ ($\sim 10\%$).

Abstract:The authors of the recent paper [1] boldly claim to discover a new fully quantum approach to foundation of statistical mechanics: "Our conceptually novel approach is free of mathematically ambiguous notions such as probability, ensemble, randomness, etc." The aim of this note is to show that this approach is neither specific for quantum systems nor really conceptually different from the standard textbook arguments supporting microcanonical or canonical ensembles in statistical mechanics.

Abstract:In this reply, I point out that the comment by Cline (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2410.05826" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2410.05826">arXiv:2410.05826</a>) on my manuscripts (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2407.00954" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2407.00954">arXiv:2407.00954</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2410.03133" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2410.03133">arXiv:2410.03133</a>) has overlooked the critical fact that the quantum entanglement between the neutrino's mass and other degrees of freedom would destroy the quantum coherence between the mass eigenstates.

Abstract:Neutrinos may acquire small Dirac or Majorana masses by new low-energy physics in terms of the chiral gravitational anomaly, as proposed by Dvali and Funcke (2016). This model predicts fast neutrino decays, $\nu_i\to\nu_j+\phi$ and $\nu_i\to\bar{\nu}_j+\phi$, where the gravi-majorons $\phi$ are pseudoscalar Nambu-Goldstone bosons. The final-state neutrino and antineutrino distributions differ depending on the Dirac or Majorana mass of the initial state. This opens a channel for distinguishing these cases, for example in the spectrum of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos. In particular, we put bounds on the neutrino lifetimes in the Majorana case, ${\tau_2}/{m_2}> 1.1\times 10^{-3}(6.7\times 10^{-4})~{\rm s/eV}$ and ${\tau_3}/{m_3}> 2.2\times 10^{-5}(1.3\times 10^{-4})~{\rm s/eV}$ at 90% CL for hierarchical (degenerate) masses, using data from experiments searching for antineutrino appearance from the Sun.

A quantum-information theoretic analysis of three-flavor neutrino oscillations: Quantum entanglement, nonlocal and nonclassical features of neutrinos

Abstract:Correlations exhibited by neutrino oscillations are studied via quantum-information theoretic quantities. We show that the strongest type of entanglement, genuine multipartite entanglement, is persistent in the flavor changing states. We prove the existence of Bell-type nonlocal features, in both its absolute and genuine avatars. Finally, we show that a measure of nonclassicality, dissension, which is a generalization of quantum discord to the tripartite case, is nonzero for almost the entire range of time in the evolution of an initial electron-neutrino. Via these quantum-information theoretic quantities, capturing different aspects of quantum correlations, we elucidate the differences between the flavor types, shedding light on the quantum-information theoretic aspects of the weak force.
A new look at the Dirac quantization condition

Abstract:The angular momentum of any quantum system should be {\it unambiguously} quantized. We show that such a quantization fails for a pure Dirac monopole due to a previously overlooked field angular momentum from the monopole-electric charge system coming from the magnetic field of the Dirac string and the electric field of the charge. Applying the point-splitting method to the monopole-charge system yields a total angular momentum which obeys the standard angular momentum algebra, but which is gauge {\it variant}. In contrast it is possible to properly quantize the angular momentum of a topological 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole plus charge. This implies that pure Dirac monopoles are not viable -- only 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles are theoretically consistent with angular momentum quantization and gauge invariance.
