Abstract:The Ekeland-Hofer-Zehnder capacity (EHZ capacity) is a fundamental symplectic invariant of convex bodies. We show that computing the EHZ capacity of polytopes is NP-hard. For this we reduce the feedback arc set problem in bipartite tournaments to computing the EHZ capacity of simplices.

Abstract:In this paper, we give an estimation for coisotropic Ekeland–Hofer–Zehnder capacity by combinatorial formula. This result implies that coisotropic Ekeland–Hofer–Zehnder capacity can measure the symmetry of convex bodies with respected to in some sense. Next, we talk about the behavior of coisotropic Ekeland–Hofer–Zehnder capacity of convex domains in the classical phase space with respect to symplectic p -products.

Characterizing symplectic capacities on ellipsoids

Abstract:It is a long-standing conjecture that all symplectic capacities which are equal to the Gromov width for ellipsoids coincide on convex domains in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$. It is known that they coincide for monotone toric domains in all dimensions. In this paper, we study whether requiring a capacity to be equal to the $k^{th}$ Ekeland-Hofer capacity for all ellipsoids can characterize it on a class of domains. We prove that for $k=n=2$, this holds for convex toric domains, but not for all monotone toric domains. We also prove that for $k=n\ge 3$, this does not hold even for convex toric domains.

Abstract:Given a symplectic toric manifold, the moment maps of sub-circle actions can be modified to be admissible functions in the sense of Hofer-Zehnder. By exploiting the relationship between the period of Hamiltonian sub-circle actions of a symplectic toric manifold and its Delzant polytope, we develop an invariant of Delzant polytopes which gives a lower bound of the Hofer-Zehnder capacity.

Abstract:We use positive S^1-equivariant symplectic homology to define a sequence of symplectic capacities c_k for star-shaped domains in R^{2n}. These capacities are conjecturally equal to the Ekeland-Hofer capacities, but they satisfy axioms which allow them to be computed in many more examples. In particular, we give combinatorial formulas for the capacities c_k of any "convex toric domain" or "concave toric domain". As an application, we determine optimal symplectic embeddings of a cube into any convex or concave toric domain. We also extend the capacities c_k to functions of Liouville domains which are almost but not quite symplectic capacities.

Abstract:We use explicit pseudoholomorphic curve techniques (without virtual perturbations) to define a sequence of symplectic capacities analogous to those defined recently by the second named author using symplectic field theory. We then compute these capacities for all four-dimensional convex toric domains. This gives various new obstructions to stabilized symplectic embedding problems which are sometimes sharp.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the problems of searching for the capacity factors and determining the capacity ranks of edges in a network coding-based network, which were first proposed in (K. Cai and P.Y. Fan, 2007). For the former problem, we prove that it is computationally hard by reducing the well known NP-complete SUB-SUM problem to the current problem. For the latter problem, we devise efficient algorithms in a special case of networks and conjecture that in general case the problem is also hard.

Abstract:A boundary integral equation method is presented for fast computation of the analytic capacities of compact sets in the complex plane. The method is based on using the Kerzman--Stein integral equation to compute the Szegö kernel and then the value of the Ahlfors map at the point at infinity. The proposed method can be used for domains with smooth and piecewise smooth boundaries. When combined with conformal mappings, the method can be used for compact slit sets. Several numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method. We recover some known exact results and corroborate the conjectural subadditivity property of analytic capacity.

Abstract:We construct new families of symplectic capacities indexed by certain symmetric polynomials, defined using rational symplectic field theory. In particular, we introduce a sequence of capacities based on an L-infinity structure on linearized contact homology and rational curve counts with local tangency constraints. We prove various structural properties of these capacities and give some preliminary computations which show that they give state of the art symplectic embedding obstructions in basic examples.

Symplectic capacities of domains close to the ball and Banach-Mazur geodesics in the space of contact forms

Abstract:We prove that all normalized symplectic capacities coincide on smooth domains in $\mathbb C^n$ which are $C^2$-close to the Euclidean ball, whereas this fails for some smooth domains which are just $C^1$-close to the ball. We also prove that all symplectic capacities whose value on ellipsoids agrees with that of the $n$-th Ekeland-Hofer capacity coincide in a $C^2$-neighborhood of the Euclidean ball of $\mathbb C^n$. These results are deduced from a general theorem about contact forms which are $C^2$-close to Zoll ones, saying that these contact forms can be pulled back to suitable "quasi-invariant" contact forms. We relate all this to the question of the existence of minimizing geodesics in the space of contact forms equipped with a Banach-Mazur pseudo-metric. Using some new spectral invariants for contact forms, we prove the existence of minimizing geodesics from a Zoll contact form to any contact form which is $C^2$-close to it. This paper also contains an appendix in which we review the construction of exotic ellipsoids by the Anosov-Katok conjugation method, as these are related to the above mentioned pseudo-metric.

Abstract:Abstract. We show that the problem to decide whether two (convex) polytopes, given by their vertex-facet incidences, are combinatorially isomorphic is graph isomorphism complete, even for simple or simplicial polytopes. On the other hand, we give a polynomial time algorithm for the combinatorial polytope isomorphism problem in bounded dimensions. Furthermore, we derive that the problems to decide whether two polytopes, given either by vertex or by facet descriptions, are projectively or affinely isomorphic are graph isomorphism hard.

Abstract:The cosmological polytope of a graph $G$ was recently introduced to give a geometric approach to the computation of wavefunctions for cosmological models with associated Feynman diagram $G$. Basic results in the theory of positive geometries dictate that this wavefunction may be computed as a sum of rational functions associated to the facets in a triangulation of the cosmological polytope. The normalized volume of the polytope then provides a complexity estimate for these computations. In this paper, we examine the (Ehrhart) $h^\ast$-polynomial of cosmological polytopes. We derive recursive formulas for computing the $h^\ast$-polynomial of disjoint unions and $1$-sums of graphs. The degree of the $h^\ast$-polynomial for any $G$ is computed and a characterization of palindromicity is given. Using these observations, a tight lower bound on the $h^\ast$-polynomial for any $G$ is identified and explicit formulas for the $h^\ast$-polynomials of multitrees and multicycles are derived. The results generalize the existing results on normalized volumes of cosmological polytopes. A tight upper bound and a combinatorial formula for the $h^\ast$-polynomial of any cosmological polytope are conjectured.

Constrained maximization of conformal capacity

Abstract:We consider constellations of disks which are unions of disjoint hyperbolic disks in the unit disk with fixed radii and unfixed centers. We study the problem of maximizing the conformal capacity of a constellation under constraints on the centers in two cases. In the first case the constraint is that the centers are at most at distance $R \in(0,1)$ from the origin and in the second case it is required that the centers are on the subsegment $[-R,R]$ of a diameter of the unit disk. We study also similar types of constellations with hyperbolic segments instead of the hyperbolic disks. Our computational experiments suggest that a dispersion phenomenon occurs: the disks/segments go as close to the unit circle as possible under these constraints and stay as far as possible from each other. The computation of capacity reduces to the Dirichlet problem for the Laplace equation which we solve with a fast boundary integral equation method. The results are double-checked with the $hp$-FEM method.

Algebraic capacities as tropical polynomials over the reduced $c_1$-positive symplectic cone

Abstract:In a series of work [Wor22], [Wor21] and [CW20], algebraic capacities were introduced in an algebraic manner for polarized algebraic surfaces and applied to the symplectic embedding problems. In this paper, we give a reformulation of algebraic capacities in terms of only a tamed pair of symplectic form and almost complex structure. We show that they actually only depend on the cohomology class of the symplectic form for a rational manifold. Since it is not known that any symplectic form on a rational manifold is Kähler, this novel formulation potentially is more general on a rational manifold. Additionally, for manifolds with $b^+=1$, we derive asymptotic results that are parallel to the context of ECH(Embedded Contact Homology) and algebraic settings. When assuming $c_1\cdot [\omega]>0$ on rational manifolds, we further introduce a sequence of tropical polynomials which will succinctly describe those capacities viewed as functions over the domain parametrizing such symplectic forms. As an application, we give a purely symplectic proof of the correspondence between algebraic capacities and ECH capacities for smooth toric surfaces.

Abstract:Our focus is to study constellations of disjoint disks in the hyperbolicspace, i.e., the unit disk equipped with the hyperbolic metric. Each constellationcorresponds to a set $E$ which is the union of $m>2$ disks withhyperbolic radii $r_j>0, j=1,\ldots,m$. The centers of the disks are notfixed, and hence individual disks of the constellation are allowed tomove under the constraints that they do not overlap and theirhyperbolic radii remain invariant. Our main objective is to findcomputational lower bounds for the conformal capacity of a givenconstellation. The capacity depends on the centers and radii in a verycomplicated way even in the simplest cases when $m=3$ or $m=4$. In theabsence of analytic methods, our work is based on numerical simulationsusing two different numerical methods, the boundary integral equationmethod and the $hp$-FEM method, respectively. Our simulations combine capacitycomputation with minimization methods and produce extremal cases wherethe disks of the constellation are grouped next to each other. Thisresembles the behavior of animal colonies minimizingheat flow in arctic areas.

Abstract:Communications in Contemporary Mathematics, Ahead of Print. Upper bounds are obtained for the Newtonian capacity of compact sets in [math] in terms of the perimeter of the [math]-parallel neighborhood of [math]. For compact, convex sets in [math] with a [math] boundary the Newtonian capacity is bounded from above by [math], where [math] is the integral of the mean curvature over the boundary of [math] with equality if [math] is a ball. For compact, convex sets in [math] with non-empty interior the Newtonian capacity is bounded from above by [math] with equality if [math] is a ball. Here, [math] is the perimeter of [math] and [math] is its measure. A quantitative refinement of the latter inequality in terms of the Fraenkel asymmetry is also obtained. An upper bound is obtained for expected Newtonian capacity of the Wiener sausage in [math] with radius [math] and time length [math].

Abstract:We show that the polytopes obtained from the Birkhoff polytope by imposing additional inequalities restricting the "longest increasing subsequence" have Ehrhart quasi-polynomials which are honest polynomials, even though they are just rational polytopes in general. We do this by defining a continuous, piecewise-linear bijection to a certain Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope. This bijection is not an integral equivalence but it respects lattice points in the appropriate way to imply that the two polytopes have the same Ehrhart (quasi-)polynomials. In fact, the bijection is essentially the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence.

Capacity bounds on integral flows and the Kostant partition function

Abstract:The type $A$ Kostant partition function is an important combinatorial object with various applications: it counts integer flows on the complete directed graph, computes Hilbert series of spaces of diagonal harmonics, and can be used to compute weight and tensor product multiplicities of representations. In this paper we study asymptotics of the Kostant partition function, improving on various previously known lower bounds and settling conjectures of O'Neill and Yip. Our methods build upon recent results and techniques of Brändén-Leake-Pak, who used Lorentzian polynomials and Gurvits' capacity method to bound the number of lattice points of transportation and flow polytopes. Finally, we also give new two-sided bounds using the Lidskii formulas from subdivisions of flow polytopes.

On the Difficulty of Intersection Checking with Polynomial Zonotopes

Abstract:Polynomial zonotopes, a non-convex set representation, have a wide range of applications from real-time motion planning and control in robotics, to reachability analysis of nonlinear systems and safety shielding in reinforcement learning. Despite this widespread use, a frequently overlooked difficulty associated with polynomial zonotopes is intersection checking. Determining whether the reachable set, represented as a polynomial zonotope, intersects an unsafe set is not straightforward. In fact, we show that this fundamental operation is NP-hard, even for a simple class of polynomial zonotopes. The standard method for intersection checking with polynomial zonotopes is a two-part algorithm that overapproximates a polynomial zonotope with a regular zonotope and then, if the overapproximation error is deemed too large, splits the set and recursively tries again. Beyond the possible need for a large number of splits, we identify two sources of concern related to this algorithm: (1) overapproximating a polynomial zonotope with a zonotope has unbounded error, and (2) after splitting a polynomial zonotope, the overapproximation error can actually increase. Taken together, this implies there may be a possibility that the algorithm does not always terminate.We perform a rigorous analysis of the method and detail necessary conditions for the union of overapproximations to provably converge to the original polynomial zonotope.
