Abstract:A boundary integral equation method is presented for fast computation of the analytic capacities of compact sets in the complex plane. The method is based on using the Kerzman--Stein integral equation to compute the Szegö kernel and then the value of the Ahlfors map at the point at infinity. The proposed method can be used for domains with smooth and piecewise smooth boundaries. When combined with conformal mappings, the method can be used for compact slit sets. Several numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method. We recover some known exact results and corroborate the conjectural subadditivity property of analytic capacity.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper mainly discusses the problem of calculating the analytic capacity of compact sets on the complex plane. Analytic capacity is an important concept in complex analysis, and it has applications in various fields such as approximation theory, potential theory, electronics, and fluid dynamics. However, except for a few special cases, analytic capacity is usually difficult to compute directly, so numerical methods are needed to solve it.
The paper proposes a method based on the Boundary Integral Equation (BIE) to quickly calculate the analytic capacity of compact sets with smooth or piecewise smooth boundaries. This method first uses the Kerzman-Stein integral equation to calculate the Szegö kernel, and then determines the analytic capacity using the derivative values of the Ahlfors map. The Ahlfors map is a unique analytic function that maps multiply connected domains to the unit disk, and its derivative at infinity is equal to the analytic capacity.
The paper also discusses some known closed-form expressions for analytic capacity and provides several numerical examples to verify the efficiency of the proposed method. In addition, for the union of a finite number of concentric disks, it provides numerical evidence supporting the subadditivity property of analytic capacity, although this property is still an open problem for general compact sets.
In summary, this paper aims to provide a fast and accurate numerical method for calculating the analytic capacity of a wider range of compact sets, including those with smooth boundaries, piecewise smooth boundaries, and sets composed only of slits.
