Abstract:We prove that for any integers $\alpha, \beta > 1$, the existential fragment of the first-order theory of the structure $\langle \mathbb{Z}; 0,1,<, +, \alpha^{\mathbb{N}}, \beta^{\mathbb{N}}\rangle$ is decidable (where $\alpha^{\mathbb{N}}$ is the set of positive integer powers of $\alpha$, and likewise for $\beta^{\mathbb{N}}$). On the other hand, we show by way of hardness that decidability of the existential fragment of the theory of $\langle \mathbb{N}; 0,1, <, +, x\mapsto \alpha^x, x \mapsto \beta^x\rangle$ for any multiplicatively independent $\alpha,\beta > 1$ would lead to mathematical breakthroughs regarding base-$\alpha$ and base-$\beta$ expansions of certain transcendental numbers.

Abstract:We consider a first-order logic for the integers with addition. This logic extends classical first-order logic by modulo-counting, threshold-counting and exact-counting quantifiers, all applied to tuples of variables (here, residues are given as terms while moduli and thresholds are given explicitly). Our main result shows that satisfaction for this logic is decidable in two-fold exponential space. If only threshold- and exact-counting quantifiers are allowed, we prove an upper bound of alternating two-fold exponential time with linearly many alternations. This latter result almost matches Berman's exact complexity of first-order logic without counting quantifiers. To obtain these results, we first translate threshold- and exact-counting quantifiers into classical first-order logic in polynomial time (which already proves the second result). To handle the remaining modulo-counting quantifiers for tuples, we first reduce them in doubly exponential time to modulo-counting quantifiers for single elements. For these quantifiers, we provide a quantifier elimination procedure similar to Reddy and Loveland's procedure for first-order logic and analyse the growth of coefficients, constants, and moduli appearing in this process. The bounds obtained this way allow to restrict quantification in the original formula to integers of bounded size which then implies the first result mentioned above. Our logic is incomparable with the logic considered by Chistikov et al. in 2022. They allow more general counting operations in quantifiers, but only unary quantifiers. The move from unary to non-unary quantifiers is non-trivial, since, e.g., the non-unary version of the Härtig quantifier results in an undecidable theory.

Abstract:We generalize Cooper's method of quantifier elimination for classical Presburger arithmetic to give a new proof that all parametric Presburger families (as defined by Kevin Woods) are definable by formulas with polynomially bounded quantifiers in an expanded language with predicates for divisibility by f(t) for every polynomial f over the integers. In fact, this quantifier bounding method works more generally in expansions of Presburger arithmetic with multiplication by scalars from any ring of functions into Z.

Abstract:We consider Presburger arithmetic extended by the sine function, call this extension sine-Presburger arithmetic ( sin-PA ), and systematically study decision problems for sets of sentences in sin-PA . In particular, we detail a decision algorithm for existential sin-PA sentences under assumption of Schanuel's conjecture. This procedure reduces decisions to the theory of the ordered additive group of real numbers extended by sine, which is decidable under Schanuel's conjecture. On the other hand, we prove that four alternating quantifier blocks suffice for undecidability of sin-PA sentences. To do so, we explicitly interpret the weak monadic second-order theory of the grid, which is undecidable, in sin-PA .

Abstract:We begin by proving that any Presburger-definable image of one or more sets of powers has zero natural density. Then, by adapting the proof of a dichotomy result on o-minimal structures by Friedman and Miller, we produce a similar dichotomy for expansions of Presburger arithmetic on the integers. Combining these two results, we obtain that the expansion of the ordered group of integers by any number of sets of powers does not define multiplication.

Abstract:Let $\alpha$ and $\beta$ belong to the same quadratic field. We show that the inhomogeneous Beatty sequence $(\lfloor n \alpha + \beta \rfloor)_{n \geq 1}$ is synchronized, in the sense that there is a finite automaton that takes as input the Ostrowski representations of $n$ and $y$ in parallel, and accepts if and only if $y = \lfloor n \alpha + \beta \rfloor$. Since it is already known that the addition relation is computable for Ostrowski representations based on a quadratic number, a consequence is a new and rather simple proof that the first-order logical theory of these sequences with addition is decidable. The decision procedure is easily implemented in the free software Walnut.

An efficient quantifier elimination procedure for Presburger arithmetic

Abstract:All known quantifier elimination procedures for Presburger arithmetic require doubly exponential time for eliminating a single block of existentially quantified variables. It has even been claimed in the literature that this upper bound is tight. We observe that this claim is incorrect and develop, as the main result of this paper, a quantifier elimination procedure eliminating a block of existentially quantified variables in singly exponential time. As corollaries, we can establish the precise complexity of numerous problems. Examples include deciding (i) monadic decomposability for existential formulas, (ii) whether an existential formula defines a well-quasi ordering or, more generally, (iii) certain formulas of Presburger arithmetic with Ramsey quantifiers. Moreover, despite the exponential blowup, our procedure shows that under mild assumptions, even NP upper bounds for decision problems about quantifier-free formulas can be transferred to existential formulas. The technical basis of our results is a kind of small model property for parametric integer programming that generalizes the seminal results by von zur Gathen and Sieveking on small integer points in convex polytopes.

Positive Moments Forever: Undecidable and Decidable Cases

Abstract:Is there an algorithm to determine attributes such as positivity or non-zeroness of linear recurrence sequences? This long-standing question is known as Skolem's problem. In this paper, we study the complexity of an equivalent problem, namely the (generalized) moment membership problem for matrices. We show that this problem is decidable for orthogonal, unitary and real eigenvalue matrices, and undecidable for matrices over certain commutative and non-commutative polynomial rings. Our results imply that the positivity problem for simple unitary linear recurrence sequences is decidable, and is undecidable for linear recurrence sequences over the ring of commutative polynomials. As a byproduct, we prove a free version of Polya's theorem.

Abstract:We investigate generalized quadratic forms with values in the set of rational integers over quadratic fields. We characterize the real quadratic fields which admit a positive definite binary generalized form of this type representing every positive integer. We also show that there are only finitely many such fields where a ternary generalized form with these properties exists.

Abstract:We investigate the decidability of the monadic second-order (MSO) theory of the structure $\langle \mathbb{N};<,P_1, \ldots,P_k \rangle$, for various unary predicates $P_1,\ldots,P_k \subseteq \mathbb{N}$. We focus in particular on "arithmetic" predicates arising in the study of linear recurrence sequences, such as fixed-base powers $\mathsf{Pow}_k = \{k^n : n \in \mathbb{N}\}$, $k$-th powers $\mathsf{N}_k = \{n^k : n \in \mathbb{N}\}$, and the set of terms of the Fibonacci sequence $\mathsf{Fib} = \{0,1,2,3,5,8,13,\ldots\}$ (and similarly for other linear recurrence sequences having a single, non-repeated, dominant characteristic root). Abstract:A central question in Arithmetic geometry is to determine for which polynomials $f \in \mathbb{Z}[t]$ and which number fields $K$ the Hasse principle holds for the affine equation $f(t) = N_{K/\mathbb{Q}}(\boldsymbol{x}) \neq 0$. Whilst extensively studied in the literature, current results are largely limited to polynomials and number fields of low degree. In this paper, we establish the Hasse principle for a wide family of polynomials and number fields, including polynomials that are products of arbitrarily many linear, quadratic or cubic factors. The proof generalises an argument of Irving, which makes use of the beta sieve of Rosser and Iwaniec. As a further application of our sieve results, we prove new cases of a conjecture of Harpaz and Wittenberg on locally split values of polynomials over number fields, and discuss consequences for rational points in fibrations.

Abstract:We establish expansion properties for suitably generic polynomials of degree $d$ in $d+1$ variables over finite fields. In particular, we show that if $P\in\mathbb{F}_q[x_1,\ldots,x_{d+1}]$ is a polynomial of degree $d$ coming from an explicit, Zariski dense set, and $X_1,\ldots,X_{d+1}\subseteq\mathbb{F}_q$ are suitably large, then $|P(X_1,\ldots,X_{d+1})|=q-O(1)$. Our methods rely on a higher-degree extension of a result of Vinh on point--line incidences over a finite field.

Abstract:In 1987, Pheidas showed that the field of Laurent series $\mathbb{F}_q((t))$ with a constant for the indeterminate $t$ and a predicate for the natural powers $\{t^n \mid n > 0\}$ of $t$ is existentially undecidable. We show that the same result holds true if $t$ is replaced by any element $\alpha$ of positive $t$-adic valuation.

Abstract:For a field extension $L/K$ we consider maps that are quadratic over $L$ but whose polarisation is only bilinear over $K$. Our main result is that all such are automatically quadratic forms over $L$ in the usual sense if and only if $L/K$ is formally unramified. In particular, this shows that over finite and number fields, one of the axioms in the standard definition of quadratic forms is superfluous.

On Polynomial-Time Decidability of k-Negations Fragments of First-Order Theories

Abstract:This paper introduces a generic framework that provides sufficient conditions for guaranteeing polynomial-time decidability of fixed-negation fragments of first-order theories that adhere to certain fixed-parameter tractability requirements. It enables deciding sentences of such theories with arbitrary existential quantification, conjunction and a fixed number of negation symbols in polynomial time. It was recently shown by Nguyen and Pak [SIAM J. Comput. 51(2): 1--31 (2022)] that an even more restricted such fragment of Presburger arithmetic (the first-order theory of the integers with addition and order) is NP-hard. In contrast, by application of our framework, we show that the fixed negation fragment of weak Presburger arithmetic, which drops the order relation from Presburger arithmetic in favour of equality, is decidable in polynomial time.

On Decidable and Undecidable Extensions of Simply Typed Lambda Calculus

Abstract:The decidability of the reachability problem for finitary PCF has been used as a theoretical basis for fully automated verification tools for functional programs. The reachability problem, however, often becomes undecidable for a slight extension of finitary PCF with side effects, such as exceptions, algebraic effects, and references, which hindered the extension of the above verification tools for supporting functional programs with side effects. In this paper, we first give simple proofs of the undecidability of four extensions of finitary PCF, which would help us understand and analyze the source of undecidability. We then focus on an extension with references, and give a decidable fragment using a type system. To our knowledge, this is the first non-trivial decidable fragment that features higher-order recursive functions containing reference cells.

Quadratic Word Equations with Length Constraints, Counter Systems, and Presburger Arithmetic with Divisibility

Abstract:Word equations are a crucial element in the theoretical foundation of constraint solving over strings, which have received a lot of attention in recent years. A word equation relates two words over string variables and constants. Its solution amounts to a function mapping variables to constant strings that equate the left and right hand sides of the equation. While the problem of solving word equations is decidable, the decidability of the problem of solving a word equation with a length constraint (i.e., a constraint relating the lengths of words in the word equation) has remained a long-standing open problem. In this paper, we focus on the subclass of quadratic word equations, i.e., in which each variable occurs at most twice. We first show that the length abstractions of solutions to quadratic word equations are in general not Presburger-definable. We then describe a class of counter systems with Presburger transition relations which capture the length abstraction of a quadratic word equation with regular constraints. We provide an encoding of the effect of a simple loop of the counter systems in the theory of existential Presburger Arithmetic with divisibility (PAD). Since PAD is decidable, we get a decision procedure for quadratic words equations with length constraints for which the associated counter system is \emph{flat} (i.e., all nodes belong to at most one cycle). We show a decidability result (in fact, also an NP algorithm with a PAD oracle) for a recently proposed NP-complete fragment of word equations called regular-oriented word equations, together with length constraints. Decidability holds when the constraints are additionally extended with regular constraints with a 1-weak control structure.
