Abstract:We fully classify completely multiplicative sequences which are given by generalised polynomial formulae, and obtain a similar result for (not necessarily completely) multiplicative sequences under the additional restriction that the sequence is not zero almost everywhere.

Abstract:In this article we prove that all completely multiplicative automatic sequences $(a_n)_{n \in \mathbf{N}}$ defined on $\mathbf{C}$, vanishing or not, can be written in the form $a_n=b_n\chi_n$ where $(b_n)_{n \in \mathbf{N}}$ is an almost constant sequence, and $(\chi_n)_{n \in \mathbf{N}}$ is a Dirichlet character.

Abstract:We investigate the construction of $\pm1$-valued completely multiplicative functions that take the value $+1$ at at most $k$ consecutive integers, which we call length-$k$ functions. We introduce a way to extend the length based on the idea of the "rotation trick" and such an extension can be quantified by the number of modified primes. Under the assumption of Elliott's conjecture, this method allows us to construct length-$k$ functions systematically for $k\geq 4$ which generalizes the work of I. Schur for $k = 2$ and R. Hudson for $k =3$.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a class of binary sequences induced by monomial permutation polynomials over $\mathrm {GF}(2^{p})$ and study the period property and the shift-equivalence of these binary sequences. In particularly, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for such a sequence to have maximal period. Moreover, we also give a necessary and sufficient condition for two such sequences to be shift equivalent.

Abstract:Linear second order recursive sequences with arbitrary initial conditions are studied. For sequences with the same parameters a ring and a group is attached, and isomorphisms and homomorphisms are established for related parameters. In the group, called the {\it sequence group}, sequences are identified if they differ by a scalar factor, but not if they differ by a shift, which is the case for the Laxton group. Prime divisors of sequences are studied with the help of the sequence group $\mod p$, which is always cyclic of order $p\pm 1$. Even and odd numbered subsequences are given independent status through the introduction of one rational parameter in place of two integer parameters. This step brings significant simplifications in the algebra. All elements of finite order in Laxton groups and sequence groups are described effectively. A necessary condition is established for a prime $p$ to be a divisor of a sequence: {\it the norm (determinant) of the respective element of the ring must be a quadratic residue $\mod p$}. This leads to an uppers estimate of the set of divisors by a set of prime density $1/2$. Numerical experiments show that the actual density is typically close to $0.35$. A conjecture is formulated that the sets of prime divisors of the even and odd numbered elements are independent for a large family of parameters.

Polynomial p-adic Low-Discrepancy Sequences

Abstract:The classic example of a low-discrepancy sequence in $\mathbb{Z}_p$ is $(x_n) = an+b$ with $a \in \mathbb{Z}_p^x$ and $b \in \mathbb{Z}_p$. Here we address the non-linear case and show that a polynomial $f$ generates a low-discrepancy sequence in $\mathbb{Z}_p$ if and only if it is a permutation polynomial $\mod p$ and $\mod p^2$. By this it is possible to construct non-linear examples of low-discrepancy sequences in $\mathbb{Z}_p$ for all primes $p$. Moreover, we prove a criterion which decides for any given polynomial in $\mathbb{Z}_p$ with $p \in \left\{ 3,5, 7\right\}$ if it generates a low-discrepancy sequence. We also discuss connections to the theories of Poissonian pair correlations and real discrepancy.

Abstract:In this article we consider the completely multiplicative sequences $(a_n)_{n \in \mathbf{N}}$ defined on a field $\mathbf{K}$ and satisfying $$\sum_{p| p \leq n, a_p \neq 1, p \in \mathbf{P}}\frac{1}{p}<\infty,$$ where $\mathbf{P}$ is the set of prime numbers. We prove that if such sequences are automatic then they cannot have infinitely many prime numbers $p$ such that $a_{p}\neq 1$. Using this fact, we prove that if a completely multiplicative sequence $(a_n)_{n \in \mathbf{N}}$, vanishing or not, can be written in the form $a_n=b_n\chi_n$ such that $(b_n)_{n \in \mathbf{N}}$ is a non ultimately periodic, completely multiplicative automatic sequence satisfying the above condition, and $(\chi_n)_{n \in \mathbf{N}}$ is a Dirichlet character or a constant sequence, then there exists only one prime number $p$ such that $b_p \neq 1$ or $0$.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a class of sequences generated by a product of matrices the coefficients of which are polynomials. We prove that the sequences of this classe are equivalent to the sequences generated by substitutions. As corollaries, we establish generalized Mahler equations and we prove that the set of natural numbers is a disjoint union of different Fibonacci sequences.

Abstract:Divisibility sequences are defined by the property that their elements divide each other whenever their indices do. The divisibility sequences that also satisfy a linear recurrence, like the Fibonacci numbers, are generated by polynomials that divide their compositions with every positive integer power. We completely characterize such polynomials in terms of their factorizations into cyclotomic polynomials using labeled Hasse diagrams, and construct new integer divisibility sequences based on them. We also show that, unlike the Fibonacci numbers, these non-classical sequences do not have the property of strong divisibility.

In this note, we introduce generalized pattern sequences, which count the occurrences of a finite number of different patterns in the expansion of positive integers in any integer base, and analyze their partial sums.

Abstract:This paper presents a modified version of Leibman's group-theoretic generalizations of the difference calculus for polynomial maps from nonempty commutative semigroups to groups, and proves that it has many desirable formal properties when the target group is locally nilpotent and also when the semigroup is the set of nonnegative integers. We will apply it to solve Waring's problem for general discrete Heisenberg groups in a sequel to this paper.

Abstract:Based on the theory of Galois rings of characteristic 4, a new class of quaternary sequences with period 2p(2) is established over Z(4) using generated cyclotomy, where p is an odd prime. The linear complexity of the new sequences is determined. Results show that the sequences have larger linear complexity and resist the attack by Berlekamp-Massey (B-M) algorithm. It is a good sequence from the viewpoint of cryptography.

Abstract:Which integer sequences are sequences of generalized weights of a linear code? In this paper, we answer this question for linear block codes, rank-metric codes, and more generally for sum-rank metric codes. We do so under an existence assumption for MDS and MSRD codes. We also prove that the same integer sequences appear as sequences of greedy weights of linear block codes, rank-metric codes, and sum-rank metric codes. Finally, we characterize the integer sequences which appear as sequences of relative generalized weights (respectively, relative greedy weights) of linear block codes.

Abstract:We give a classification of power series parametrizing Lubin-Tate trace compatible sequences. This proof answers a question posed in the literature by Berger and Fourquaux. Lubin-Tate trace compatible sequences are a generalization of norm compatible sequences, which arise in Iwasawa theory and local class field theory. The result we prove generalizes the interpolation theorem proved by Coleman in the classical norm compatible sequence case. We also, jointly with Victor Kolyvagin, give a method for finding such series explicitly in certain special cases.

We give some properties of these polynomials. Abstract:In this paper, new classes of binary generalized cyclotomic sequences of period 2p(m+1)q(n+1) are constructed. These sequences are balanced. We calculate the linear complexity of the constructed sequences with a simple method. The results show that the linear complexity of such sequences attains the maximum.
