Abstract:We summarize several results about non-simplicity, solvability and normal structure of finite groups related to the number of conjugacy classes appearing in the product or the power of conjugacy classes. We also collect some problems that have only been partially solved.

Abstract:Many results have been established that show how the number of conjugacy classes appearing in the product of classes affect the structure of a finite group. The aim of this paper is to show several results about solvability concerning the case in which the power of a conjugacy class is a union of one or two conjugacy classes. Moreover, we show that the above conditions can be determined through the character table of the group.

Abstract:A theorem of Z. Arad and E. Fisman establishes that if $A$ and $B$ are two conjugacy classes of a finite group $G$ such that either $AB=A\cup B$ or $AB=A^{-1} \cup B$, then $G$ cannot be non-abelian simple. We demonstrate that, in fact, $\langle A\rangle = \langle B\rangle$ is solvable, the elements of $A$ and $B$ are $p$-elements for some prime $p$, and $\langle A\rangle $ is $p$-nilpotent. Moreover, under the second assumption, it turns out that $A=B$ and this is the only possible case. This research is done by appealing to recently developed techniques and results that are based on the Classification of Finite Simple Groups.

Squares of real conjugacy classes in finite groups

Abstract:We prove that if a finite group $G$ contains a conjugacy class $K$ whose square is of the form $1 \cup D$, where $D$ is a conjugacy class of $G$, then $\langle K \rangle$ is a solvable proper normal subgroup of $G$ and we completely determine its structure. We also obtain the structure of those groups in which the assumption above is true for all non-central conjugacy classes and when every conjugacy class satisfies that its square is the union of all central conjugacy classes except at most one.

Abstract:Landau's theorem on conjugacy classes asserts that there are only finitely many finite groups, up to isomorphism, with exactly $k$ conjugacy classes for any positive integer $k$. We show that, for any positive integers $n$ and $s$, there exists only a finite number of finite groups $G$, up to isomorphism, having a normal subgroup $N$ of index $n$ which contains exactly $s$ non-central $G$-conjugacy classes. We provide upper bounds for the orders of $G$ and $N$, which are used by using GAP to classify all finite groups with normal subgroups having a small index and few $G$-classes. We also study the corresponding problems when we only take into account the set of $G$-classes of prime-power order elements contained in a normal subgroup.

Abstract:For a simple algebraic group $G$ over an algebraically closed field, we study products of normal subsets. For this we mark the nodes of the Dynkin diagram of $G$. We use two types of labels, a binary marking and a labeling with non-negative integers. The first is used to recognize large conjugacy classes which appear in a product of two conjugacy classes while the second is used to keep track of multiplicities of regular diagrams. In particular, we formulate sufficient conditions in terms of marked diagrams, for a product of normal subsets in $G$ to contain regular semisimple elements.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group. The question of how certain arithmetical conditions on the lengths of the conjugacy classes of G influence the group structure has been studied by several authors. In this paper we study restrictions on the structure of a finite group in which the lengths of conjugacy classes are not divisible by p(2) for some prime p. We generalise and provide simplified proofs for some earlier results.

Abstract:There are several graphs defined on groups. Among them we consider graphs whose vertex set consists conjugacy classes of a group $G$ and adjacency is defined by properties of the elements of conjugacy classes. In particular, we consider commuting/nilpotent/solvable conjugacy class graph of $G$ where two distinct conjugacy classes $a^G$ and $b^G$ are adjacent if there exist some elements $x\in a^G$ and $y\in b^G$ such that $\langle x, y \rangle$ is abelian/nilpotent/solvable. After a section of introductory results and examples, we discuss all the available results on connectedness, graph realization, genus, various spectra and energies of certain induced subgraphs of these graphs. Proofs of the results are not included. However, many open problems for further investigation are stated.

The main results of this paper are as follows: (1) If gcd(p- 1, vertical bar G vertical bar) = 1 and p(2) does not divide vertical bar x(G) | for any p'-element x of prime power order, then G is a solvable p-nilpotent group and a Sylow p- subgroup of G/O-p(G) is elementary abelian. (2) Suppose that G is p-solvable. If p(p-1) does not divide vertical bar x(G) | for any element x of prime power order, then the p-length of G is at most one. (3) Suppose that G is p-solvable. Abstract:In this note we provide some counterexamples for the conjecture of Moretó on finite simple groups, which says that any finite simple group $G$ can determined in terms of its order $|G|$ and the number of elements of order $p$, where $p$ the largest prime divisor of $|G|$. Moreover, we show that this conjecture holds for all sporadic simple groups and alternating groups $A_n$, where $n\neq 8, 10$. Some related conjectures are also discussed.

Abstract:A semigroup conjugacy is an equivalence relation that equals group conjugacy when the semigroup is a group. In this note, we answer five open problems related to semigroup conjugacy. (Problem One) We say a conjugacy ~ is partition-covering if for every set X and every partition of the set, there exists a semigroup with universe X such that the partition gives the ~-conjugacy classes of the semigroup. We prove that six well-studied conjugacy relations -- ~o, ~c, ~n, ~p, ~p*, and ~tr -- are all partition-covering. (Problem Two) For two semigroup elements a and b in S, we say a ~p b if there exists u and v in S such that a=uv and b=vu. We give an example of a semigroup that is embeddable in a group for which ~p is not transitive. (Problem Three) We construct an infinite chain of first-order definable semigroup conjugacies. (Problem Four) We construct a semigroup for which ~o is a congruence and Sõ is not cancellative. (Problem Five) We construct a semigroup for which ~p is not transitive while, for each of the semigroup's variants, ~p is transitive.
