Abstract:This paper studies {\em strong blocking sets} in the $N$-dimensional finite projective space $\mathrm{PG}(N,q)$. We first show that certain unions of blocking sets cannot form strong blocking sets, which leads to a new lower bound on the size of a strong blocking set in $\mathrm{PG}(N,q)$.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the cardinality of the smallest set of lines of the finite projective spaces $\operatorname{PG}(n,q)$ such that every plane is incident with at least one line of the set. This is the first main open problem concerning the minimum size of $(s,t)$-blocking sets in $\operatorname{PG}(n,q)$, where we set $s=2$ and $t=1$. In $\operatorname{PG}(n,q)$, an $(s,t)$-blocking set refers to a set of $t$-spaces such that each $s$-space is incident with at least one chosen $t$-space. This is a notoriously difficult problem, as it is equivalent to determining the size of certain $q$-Turán designs and $q$-covering designs. We present an improvement on the upper bounds of Etzion and of Metsch via a refined scheme for a recursive construction, which in fact enables improvement in the general case as well.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that a small minimal k-blocking set in PG(n, q3), q = p^h, h >= 1, p prime, p >=7, intersecting every (n-k)-space in 1 (mod q) points, is linear. As a corollary, this result shows that all small minimal k-blocking sets in PG(n, p^3), p prime, p >=7, are Fp-linear, proving the linearity conjecture (see [7]) in the case PG(n, p3), p prime, p >= 7.

Outer Strong Blocking Sets

Abstract:Strong blocking sets, introduced first in 2011 in connection with saturating sets, have recently gained a lot of attention due to their correspondence with minimal codes. In this paper, we dig into the geometry of the concatenation method, introducing the concept of outer strong blocking sets and their coding theoretical counterpart. We investigate their structure and provide bounds on their size. As a byproduct, we improve the best-known upper bound on the minimum size of a strong blocking set. Finally, we present a geometric construction of small strong blocking sets, whose computational cost is significantly smaller than the previously known ones.

Abstract:An $\mathbb{F}_q$- linear set $L=L_U$ of $\Lambda=\mathrm{PG}(V, \mathbb{F}_{q^n}) \cong \mathrm{PG}(r-1,q^n)$ is a set of points defined by non-zero vectors of an $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspace $U$ of $V$. The integer $\dim_{\mathbb{F}_q} U$ is called the rank of $L$. In [G. Lunardon, O. Polverino: Translation ovoids of orthogonal polar spaces. Forum Math. 16 (2004)], it was proven that any $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear set $L$ of $\Lambda$ of rank $u$ such that $\langle L \rangle=\Lambda$ is either a canonical subgeometry of $\Lambda$ or there are a $(u-r-1)$-dimensional subspace $\Gamma$ of $\mathrm{PG}(u-1,q^n) \supset \Lambda$ disjoint from $\Lambda$ and a canonical subgeometry $\Sigma \cong \mathrm{PG}(u-1,q)$ disjoint from $\Gamma$ such that $L$ is the projection of $\Sigma$ from $\Gamma$ onto $\Lambda$. The subspace $\Gamma$ is called the vertex of the projection. In this article, we will show a method to reconstruct the vertex $\Gamma$ for a peculiar class of linear sets of rank $u = n(r - 1)$ in $\mathrm{PG}(r - 1, q^n)$ called evasive linear sets. Also, we will use this result to characterize some families of linear sets of the projective line $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$ introduced from 2018 onward, by means of certain properties of their projection vertices, as done in [B. Csajbók, C. Zanella: On scattered linear sets of pseudoregulus type in $\mathrm{PG}(1, q^t)$, Finite Fields Appl. 41 (2016)] and in [C. Zanella, F. Zullo: Vertex properties of maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1, q^n)$. Discrete Math. 343(5) (2020)].

Explicit constructions of optimal blocking sets and minimal codes

Abstract:A strong $s$-blocking set in a projective space is a set of points that intersects each codimension-$s$ subspace in a spanning set of the subspace. We present an explicit construction of such sets in a $(k - 1)$-dimensional projective space over $\mathbb{F}_q$ of size $O_s(q^s k)$, which is optimal up to the constant factor depending on $s$. This also yields an optimal explicit construction of affine blocking sets in $\mathbb{F}_q^k$ with respect to codimension-$(s+1)$ affine subspaces, and of $s$-minimal codes. Our approach is motivated by a recent construction of Alon, Bishnoi, Das, and Neri of strong $1$-blocking sets, which uses expander graphs with a carefully chosen set of vectors as their vertex set. The main novelty of our work lies in constructing specific hypergraphs on top of these expander graphs, where tree-like configurations correspond to strong $s$-blocking sets. We also discuss some connections to size-Ramsey numbers of hypergraphs, which might be of independent interest.

Abstract:The maximum scattered linear sets in $PG(1,q^n)$ have been completely classified for $n \le 4$ by Csajbók-Zanella and Lavrauw-Van de Voorde. Here a wide class of linear sets in $PG(1,q^5)$ is studied which depends on two parameters. Conditions for the existence, in this class, of possible new maximum scattered linear sets in $PG(1,q^5)$ are exhibited.

Abstract:We generalize the example of linear set presented by the last two authors in "Vertex properties of maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$" (2019) to a more general family, proving that such linear sets are maximum scattered when $q$ is odd and, apart from a special case, they are are new. This solves an open problem posed in "Vertex properties of maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$" (2019). As a consequence of Sheekey's results in "A new family of linear maximum rank distance codes" (2016), this family yields to new MRD-codes with parameters $(6,6,q;5)$.

Abstract:Abstract We prove new upper bounds on the smallest size of affine blocking sets, that is, sets of points in a finite affine space that intersect every affine subspace of a fixed codimension. We show an equivalence between affine blocking sets with respect to codimension‐2 subspaces that are generated by taking a union of lines through the origin, and strong blocking sets in the corresponding projective space, which in turn are equivalent to minimal codes. Using this equivalence, we improve the current best upper bounds on the smallest size of a strong blocking set in finite projective spaces over fields of size at least 3. Furthermore, using coding theoretic techniques, we improve the current best lower bounds on a strong blocking set. Our main motivation for these new bounds is their application to trifferent codes, which are sets of ternary codes of length with the property that for any three distinct codewords there is a coordinate where they all have distinct values. Over the finite field , we prove that minimal codes are equivalent to linear trifferent codes. Using this equivalence, we show that any linear trifferent code of length has size at most , improving the recent upper bound of Pohoata and Zakharov. Moreover, we show the existence of linear trifferent codes of length and size at least , thus (asymptotically) matching the best lower bound on trifferent codes. We also give explicit constructions of affine blocking sets with respect to codimension‐2 subspaces that are a constant factor bigger than the best known lower bound. By restricting to , we obtain linear trifferent codes of size at least , improving the current best explicit construction that has size .

Abstract:Bonini, Borello and Byrne started the study of saturating linear sets in Desarguesian projective spaces, in connection with the covering problem in the rank metric. In this paper we study \emph{$1$-saturating} linear sets in PG$(2,q^4)$, that is $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear sets in PG$(2,q^4)$ with the property that their secant lines cover the entire plane. By making use of a characterization of generalized Gabidulin codes, we prove that the rank of such a linear set is at least $5$. This answers to a recent question posed by Bartoli, Borello and Marino.

Abstract:In this note, it is shown that a finite group G is solvable if for each odd prime divisor p of |G|, |Irr(B0(G)2)∩Irr(B0(G)p)|≤2, where Irr(B0(G)p) is the set of complex irreducible characters of the principal p-block B0(G)p of G. Also, the structure of such groups is investigated. Examples show that the bound 2 is best possible.

Abstract:Let $V$ denote an $r$-dimensional $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$-vector space. For an $m$-dimensional $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspace $U$ of $V$ assume that $\dim_q \left(\langle {\bf v}\rangle_{\mathbb{F}_{q^n}} \cap U\right) \geq 2$ for each non zero vector ${\bf v}\in U$. If $n\leq q$ then we prove the existence of an integer $1<d \mid n$ such that the set of one-dimensional $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$-subspaces generated by non-zero vectors of $U$ is the same as the set of one-dimensional $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$-subspaces generated by non-zero vectors of $\langle U\rangle_{\mathbb{F}_{q^d}}$. If we view $U$ as a point set of $\mathrm{AG}(r,q^n)$, it means that $U$ and $\langle U \rangle_{\mathbb{F}_{q^d}}$ determine the same set of directions. We prove a stronger statement when $n \mid m$. In terms of linear sets it means that an $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear set of $\mathrm{PG}(r-1,q^n)$ has maximum field of linearity $\mathbb{F}_q$ only if it has a point of weight one. We also present some consequences regarding the size of a linear set.

Avoiding secants of given size in finite projective planes

Abstract:Let $q$ be a prime power and $k$ be a natural number. What are the possible cardinalities of point sets ${S}$ in a projective plane of order $q$, which do not intersect any line at exactly $k$ points? This problem and its variants have been investigated before, in relation with blocking sets, untouchable sets or sets of even type, among others. In this paper we show a series of results which point out the existence of all or almost all possible values $m\in [0, q^2+q+1]$ for $|S|=m$, provided that $k$ is not close to the extremal values $0$ or $q+1$. Moreover, using polynomial techniques we show the existence of a point set $S$ with the following property: for every prescribed list of numbers $t_1, \ldots t_{q^2+q+1}$, $|S\cap \ell_i|\neq t_i$ holds for the $i$th line $\ell_i$, $\forall i \in \{1, 2, \ldots, q^2+q+1\}$.

Abstract:In this paper, we study rational sections of the relative Picard variety of a linear system on a smooth projective variety. Specifically, we prove that if the linear system is basepoint-free and the locus of non-integral divisors has codimension at least two, then all rational sections of the relative Picard variety come from restrictions of line bundles on the variety.

Abstract:A plane curve C⊂P2 of degree d is called blocking if every Fq -line in the plane meets C at some Fq -point. We prove that the proportion of blocking curves among those of degree d is o(1) when d≥2q−1 and q→∞ . We also show that the same conclusion holds for smooth curves under the somewhat weaker condition d≥3p and d,q→∞ . Moreover, the two events in which a random plane curve is smooth and respectively blocking are shown to be asymptotically independent. Extending a classical result on the number of Fq -roots of random polynomials, we find that the limiting distribution of the number of Fq -points in the intersection of a random plane curve and a fixed Fq -line is Poisson with mean 1. We also present an explicit formula for the proportion of blocking curves involving statistics on the number of Fq -points contained in a union of k lines for k=1,2,...,q2+q+1 .
