Abstract:Strong blocking sets, introduced first in 2011 in connection with saturating sets, have recently gained a lot of attention due to their correspondence with minimal codes. In this paper, we dig into the geometry of the concatenation method, introducing the concept of outer strong blocking sets and their coding theoretical counterpart. We investigate their structure and provide bounds on their size. As a byproduct, we improve the best-known upper bound on the minimum size of a strong blocking set. Finally, we present a geometric construction of small strong blocking sets, whose computational cost is significantly smaller than the previously known ones.

Explicit constructions of optimal blocking sets and minimal codes

Abstract:A strong $s$-blocking set in a projective space is a set of points that intersects each codimension-$s$ subspace in a spanning set of the subspace. We present an explicit construction of such sets in a $(k - 1)$-dimensional projective space over $\mathbb{F}_q$ of size $O_s(q^s k)$, which is optimal up to the constant factor depending on $s$. This also yields an optimal explicit construction of affine blocking sets in $\mathbb{F}_q^k$ with respect to codimension-$(s+1)$ affine subspaces, and of $s$-minimal codes. Our approach is motivated by a recent construction of Alon, Bishnoi, Das, and Neri of strong $1$-blocking sets, which uses expander graphs with a carefully chosen set of vectors as their vertex set. The main novelty of our work lies in constructing specific hypergraphs on top of these expander graphs, where tree-like configurations correspond to strong $s$-blocking sets. We also discuss some connections to size-Ramsey numbers of hypergraphs, which might be of independent interest.

Abstract:Abstract We prove new upper bounds on the smallest size of affine blocking sets, that is, sets of points in a finite affine space that intersect every affine subspace of a fixed codimension. We show an equivalence between affine blocking sets with respect to codimension‐2 subspaces that are generated by taking a union of lines through the origin, and strong blocking sets in the corresponding projective space, which in turn are equivalent to minimal codes. Using this equivalence, we improve the current best upper bounds on the smallest size of a strong blocking set in finite projective spaces over fields of size at least 3. Furthermore, using coding theoretic techniques, we improve the current best lower bounds on a strong blocking set. Our main motivation for these new bounds is their application to trifferent codes, which are sets of ternary codes of length with the property that for any three distinct codewords there is a coordinate where they all have distinct values. Over the finite field , we prove that minimal codes are equivalent to linear trifferent codes. Using this equivalence, we show that any linear trifferent code of length has size at most , improving the recent upper bound of Pohoata and Zakharov. Moreover, we show the existence of linear trifferent codes of length and size at least , thus (asymptotically) matching the best lower bound on trifferent codes. We also give explicit constructions of affine blocking sets with respect to codimension‐2 subspaces that are a constant factor bigger than the best known lower bound. By restricting to , we obtain linear trifferent codes of size at least , improving the current best explicit construction that has size .

Abstract:In this paper, we study a class of linear codes defined by characteristic functions of certain subsets of a finite field. We derive a sufficient and necessary condition for such a code to be a minimal linear code by a character-theoretical approach. We obtain new three-weight or four-weight minimal linear codes that do not satisfy the Ashikhmin-Barg condition by using partial difference sets. We show that our construction yields minimal linear codes that do not arise from cutting vectorial blocking sets, and also discuss their applications in secret sharing schemes.

We first show that certain unions of blocking sets cannot form strong blocking sets, which leads to a new lower bound on the size of a strong blocking set in $\mathrm{PG}(N,q)$.

On three domination-based identification problems in block graphs

Abstract:The problems of determining the minimum-sized \emph{identifying}, \emph{locating-dominating} and \emph{open locating-dominating codes} of an input graph are special search problems that are challenging from both theoretical and computational viewpoints. In these problems, one selects a dominating set $C$ of a graph $G$ such that the vertices of a chosen subset of $V(G)$ (i.e. either $V(G)\setminus C$ or $V(G)$ itself) are uniquely determined by their neighborhoods in $C$. A typical line of attack for these problems is to determine tight bounds for the minimum codes in various graphs classes. In this work, we present tight lower and upper bounds for all three types of codes for \emph{block graphs} (i.e. diamond-free chordal graphs). Our bounds are in terms of the number of maximal cliques (or \emph{blocks}) of a block graph and the order of the graph. Two of our upper bounds verify conjectures from the literature - with one of them being now proven for block graphs in this article. As for the lower bounds, we prove them to be linear in terms of both the number of blocks and the order of the block graph. We provide examples of families of block graphs whose minimum codes attain these bounds, thus showing each bound to be tight.

Minimal Linear Codes Constructed from partial spreads

Abstract:Partial spread is important in finite geometry and can be used to construct linear codes. From the results in (Designs, Codes and Cryptography 90:1-15, 2022) by Xia Li, Qin Yue and Deng Tang, we know that if the number of the elements in a partial spread is ``big enough", then the corresponding linear code is minimal. They used the sufficient condition in (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 44(5): 2010-2017, 1998) to prove the minimality of such linear codes. In this paper, we use the geometric approach to study the minimality of linear codes constructed from partial spreads in all cases.

Expanding polynomials for sets with additive structure

Abstract:The expansion of bivariate polynomials is well-understood for sets with a linear-sized product set. In contrast, not much is known for sets with small sumset. In this work, we provide expansion bounds for polynomials of the form $f(x, y) = g(x + p(y)) + h(y)$ for sets with small sumset. In particular, we prove that when $|A|$, $|B|$, $|A + A|$, and $|B + B|$ are not too far apart, for every $\varepsilon > 0$ we have \[|f(A, B)| = \Omega\left(\frac{|A|^{256/121 - \varepsilon}|B|^{74/121 - \varepsilon}}{|A + A|^{108/121}|B + B|^{24/121}}\right).\] We show that the above bound and its variants have a variety of applications in additive combinatorics and distinct distances problems. Our proof technique relies on the recent proximity approach of Solymosi and Zahl. In particular, we show how to incorporate the size of a sumset into this approach.

Abstract:Linear codes play a crucial role in various fields of engineering and mathematics, including data storage, communication, cryptography, and combinatorics. Minimal linear codes, a subset of linear codes, are particularly essential for designing effective secret sharing schemes. In this paper, we introduce several classes of minimal binary linear codes by carefully selecting appropriate Boolean functions. These functions belong to a renowned class of Boolean functions, namely, the general Maiorana–McFarland class. We employ a method first proposed by Ding et al. (IEEE Trans Inf Theory 64(10):6536–6545, 2018) to construct minimal codes violating the Ashikhmin–Barg bound (wide minimal codes) by using Krawtchouk polynomials. The lengths, dimensions, and weight distributions of the obtained codes are determined using the Walsh spectrum distribution of the chosen Boolean functions. Our findings demonstrate that a vast majority of the newly constructed codes are wide minimal. Furthermore, our proposed codes exhibit a significantly larger minimum distance, in some cases, compared to some existing similar constructions. Finally, we address this method, based on Krawtchouk polynomials, more generally, and highlight certain generic properties related to it. These general results offer insights into the scope of this approach.

On combinatorial structures in linear codes

Abstract:In this work we show that given a connectivity graph $G$ of a $[[n,k,d]]$ quantum code, there exists $\{K_i\}_i, K_i \subset G$, such that $\sum_i |K_i|\in \Omega(k), \ |K_i| \in \Omega(d)$, and the $K_i$'s are $\tilde{\Omega}( \sqrt{{k}/{n}})$-expander. If the codes are classical we show instead that the $K_i$'s are $\tilde{\Omega}\left({{k}/{n}}\right)$-expander. We also show converses to these bounds. In particular, we show that the BPT bound for classical codes is tight in all Euclidean dimensions. Finally, we prove structural theorems for graphs with no "dense" subgraphs which might be of independent interest.

Abstract:Minimal binary linear codes are a special class of binary codes with important applications in secret sharing and secure two-party computation. These codes are characterized by the property that none of the nonzero codewords is covered by any other codeword. Denoting by $w_{{\min \limits }}$ and $w_{{\max \limits }}$ the minimum and maximum weights of the codewords, respectively, such codes are relatively easy to design when the ratio $w_{{\min \limits }}/w_{{\max \limits }}$ is larger than 1/2 (known as the Ashikhmin-Barg bound). On the other hand, a few known classes of minimal codes violate this bound, hence having the property $w_{{\min \limits }}/w_{{\max \limits }} \leq 1/2$. In this article, we provide several explicit classes of minimal binary linear codes that violate the Ashikhmin-Barg bound while achieving a great variety of the ratio $w_{{\min \limits }}/w_{{\max \limits }}$. Our first generic method employs suitable characteristic functions with relatively low weights within the range [n + 1,2n− 2]. The second approach specifies characteristic functions with weights in [2n− 2 + 1,2n− 2 + 2n− 3 − 1], whose supports contain a skewed (removing one element) affine subspace of dimension n − 2. Finally, we also characterize an infinite family of minimal codes based on the class of so-called root Boolean functions of weight 2n− 1 − (n − 1), useful in specific hardware testing applications. Consequently, many infinite classes of minimal codes crossing the Ashikhmin-Barg bound are derived from an ample range of characteristic functions. In certain cases, we completely specify the weight distributions of the resulting codes.

Abstract:A complete theory of the relationship between the minimal bases and indices of rational matrices and those of their strong linearizations is presented. Such theory is based on establishing first the relationships between the minimal bases and indices of rational matrices and those of their polynomial system matrices under the classical minimality condition and certain additional conditions of properness. This is related to pioneering results obtained by Verghese, Van Dooren and Kailath in 1979-80, which were the first proving results of this type. It is shown that the definitions of linearizations and strong linearizations do not guarantee any relationship between the minimal bases and indices of the linearizations and the rational matrices in general. In contrast, simple relationships are obtained for the family of strong block minimal bases linearizations, which can be used to compute minimal bases and indices of any rational matrix, including rectangular ones, via algorithms for pencils. These results extend the corresponding ones for other families of linearizations available in recent literature for square rational matrices.

Abstract:Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity are important cryptographic primitives in some stream ciphers. In this paper, two methodologies for constructing minimal binary codes from sets, Boolean functions and vectorial Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity, are proposed. More precisely, a general construction of new minimal codes using minimal codes contained in Reed-Muller codes and sets without nonzero low degree annihilators is presented. The other construction allows us to yield minimal codes from certain subcodes of Reed-Muller codes and vectorial Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity. Via these general constructions, infinite families of minimal binary linear codes of dimension m and length less than or equal to m(m + 1)/2 are obtained. Besides, a lower bound on the minimum distance of the proposed minimal linear codes is established. Conjectures and open problems are also presented. The results of this paper show that Boolean functions with high algebraic immunity have nice applications in several fields additionally to symmetric cryptography, such as coding theory and secret sharing schemes.

Upper bounds for linear graph codes

Abstract:A linear graph code is a family $\mathcal{C}$ of graphs on $n$ vertices with the property that the symmetric difference of the edge sets of any two graphs in $\mathcal{C}$ is also the edge set of a graph in $\mathcal{C}$. In this article, we investigate the maximal size of a linear graph code that does not contain a copy of a fixed graph $H$. In particular, we show that if $H$ has an even number of edges, the size of the code is $O(2^{\binom{n}{2}}/\log n)$, making progress on a question of Alon. Furthermore, we show that for almost all graphs $H$ with an even number of edges, there exists $\varepsilon_H>0$ such that the size of a linear graph code without a copy of $H$ is at most $2^{\binom{n}{2}}/n^{\varepsilon_H}$.

Abstract:Expander decompositions form the basis of one of the most flexible paradigms for close-to-linear-time graph algorithms. Length-constrained expander decompositions generalize this paradigm to better work for problems with lengths, distances and costs. Roughly, an $(h,s)$-length $\phi$-expander decomposition is a small collection of length increases to a graph so that nodes within distance $h$ can route flow over paths of length $hs$ with congestion at most $1/\phi$.

Abstract:Consider a $q$-ary block code satisfying the property that no $l$-letters long codeword's prefix occurs as a suffix of any codeword for $l$ inside some interval. We determine a general upper bound on the maximum size of these codes and a tighter bound for codes where overlaps with lengths not exceeding $k$ are prohibited. We then provide constructions for codes with various restrictions on overlap lengths and use them to determine lower bounds on the maximum sizes. In particular, we construct $(1,k)$-overlap-free codes where $k \geq n/2$ and $n$ denotes the block size, expand a known construction of $(k,n-1)$-overlap-free codes, and combine the ideas behind both constructions to obtain $(t_1,t_2)$-overlap-free codes and codes that are simultaneously $(1,k)$- and $(n-k,n-1)$-overlap-free for some $k < n/2$. In the case when overlaps of lengths between 1 and $k$ are prohibited, we complete the characterisation of non-expandable codes started by Cai, Wang, and Feng (2023).

A new approach to strong convergence

Abstract:A family of random matrices $\boldsymbol{X}^N=(X_1^N,\ldots,X_d^N)$ converges strongly to a family $\boldsymbol{x}=(x_1,\ldots,x_d)$ in a $C^*$-algebra if $\|P(\boldsymbol{X}^N)\|\to\|P(\boldsymbol{x})\|$ for every noncommutative polynomial $P$. This phenomenon plays a central role in several recent breakthrough results on random graphs, geometry, and operator algebras. However, strong convergence is notoriously difficult to prove and has generally required delicate problem-specific methods. In this paper, we develop a new approach to strong convergence that uses only soft arguments. Our method exploits the fact that for many natural models, the expected trace of $P(\boldsymbol{X}^N)$ is a rational function of $\frac{1}{N}$ whose lowest order asymptotics are easily understood. We develop a general technique to deduce strong convergence directly from these inputs using the inequality of A. and V. Markov for univariate polynomials and elementary Fourier analysis. To illustrate the method, we develop the following applications. 1. We give a short proof of the result of Friedman that random regular graphs have a near-optimal spectral gap, and obtain a sharp understanding of the large deviations probabilities of the second eigenvalue. 2. We prove a strong quantitative form of the strong convergence property of random permutation matrices due to Bordenave and Collins. 3. We extend the above to any stable representation of the symmetric group, providing many new examples of the strong convergence phenomenon.
