Abstract:Strong blocking sets, introduced first in 2011 in connection with saturating sets, have recently gained a lot of attention due to their correspondence with minimal codes. In this paper, we dig into the geometry of the concatenation method, introducing the concept of outer strong blocking sets and their coding theoretical counterpart. We investigate their structure and provide bounds on their size. As a byproduct, we improve the best-known upper bound on the minimum size of a strong blocking set. Finally, we present a geometric construction of small strong blocking sets, whose computational cost is significantly smaller than the previously known ones.

Abstract:This paper studies {\em strong blocking sets} in the $N$-dimensional finite projective space $\mathrm{PG}(N,q)$. We first show that certain unions of blocking sets cannot form strong blocking sets, which leads to a new lower bound on the size of a strong blocking set in $\mathrm{PG}(N,q)$.

Abstract:More than 30 years ago, Delandtsheer and Doyen showed that the automorphism group of a block-transitive 2-design, with blocks of size k , could leave invariant a nontrivial point-partition, but only if the number of points was bounded in terms of k . Since then examples have been found where there are two nontrivial point partitions, either forming a chain of partitions, or forming a grid structure on the point set. We show, by construction of infinite families of designs, that there is no limit on the length of a chain of invariant point partitions for a block-transitive 2-design. We introduce the notion of an 'array' of a set of points which describes how the set interacts with parts of the various partitions, and we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of the 'array' of a point set, relative to a partition chain, for it to be a block of such a design.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that a small minimal k-blocking set in PG(n, q3), q = p^h, h >= 1, p prime, p >=7, intersecting every (n-k)-space in 1 (mod q) points, is linear. As a corollary, this result shows that all small minimal k-blocking sets in PG(n, p^3), p prime, p >=7, are Fp-linear, proving the linearity conjecture (see [7]) in the case PG(n, p3), p prime, p >= 7.

Powers of planar graphs, product structure, and blocking partitions

Abstract:We prove that the $k$-power of any planar graph $G$ is contained in $H\boxtimes P\boxtimes K_{f(\Delta(G),k)}$ for some graph $H$ with bounded treewidth, some path $P$, and some function $f$. This resolves an open problem of Ossona de Mendez. In fact, we prove a more general result in terms of shallow minors that implies similar results for many `beyond planar' graph classes, without dependence on $\Delta(G)$. For example, we prove that every $k$-planar graph is contained in $H\boxtimes P\boxtimes K_{f(k)}$ for some graph $H$ with bounded treewidth and some path $P$, and some function $f$. This resolves an open problem of Dujmović, Morin and Wood. We generalise all these results for graphs of bounded Euler genus, still with an absolute bound on the treewidth. At the heart of our proof is the following new concept of independent interest. An $\ell$-blocking partition of a graph $G$ is a partition of $V(G)$ into connected sets such that every path of length greater than $\ell$ in $G$ contains at least two vertices in one part. We prove that for some constant $\ell \ge 1$ every graph of Euler genus $g$ has an $\ell$-blocking partition with parts of size bounded by a function of $\Delta(G)$ and $g$. Motivated by this result, we study blocking partitions in their own right. We show that every graph $G$ has a $2$-blocking partition with parts of size bounded by a function of $\Delta(G)$ and $\textrm{tw}(G)$. On the other hand, we show that 4-regular graphs do not have $\ell$-blocking partitions with bounded size parts.

Abstract:Given a continuum $X$ and an element $x \in X$, $\pi(x)$ is the smallest set that contains $x$ and does not block singletons, and $B(x)$ is the set of all elements blocked by ${x}$. We prove that for each $x \in X$, $B(x)$ is connected, $B(x) \subset \pi(x)$, and that if $B(x)$ is closed, then $B(x)=\pi(x)$. Among other results, we prove that if $X$ is a Kelley continuum and $\pi(x)$ is proper, then $B(x)=\pi(x)$. Finally, we prove that for a certain class of dendroids, the family of minima non-blockers coincides with the family of connected non-blockers.

A Primer on Chainmails: Structures for Point-free Connectivity

Abstract:In point-free topology, one abstracts the poset of open subsets of a topological space, by replacing it with a frame (a complete lattice, where meet distributes over arbitrary join). In this paper we propose a similar abstraction of the posets of connected subsets in various space-like structures. The analogue of a frame is called a chainmail, which is defined as a poset admitting joins of its mails, i.e., subsets having a lower bound. The main result of the paper is an equivalence between a subcategory of the category of complete join-semilattices and the category of chainmails.

Abstract:In this paper we present a complete characterization of the smallest sets that block all the simple spanning trees (SSTs) in a complete geometric graph. We also show that if a subgraph is a blocker for all SSTs of diameter at most 4, then it must block all simple spanning subgraphs, and in particular, all SSTs. For convex geometric graphs, we obtain an even stronger result: being a blocker for all SSTs of diameter at most 3 is already sufficient for blocking all simple spanning subgraphs.

Abstract:Abstract We prove new upper bounds on the smallest size of affine blocking sets, that is, sets of points in a finite affine space that intersect every affine subspace of a fixed codimension. We show an equivalence between affine blocking sets with respect to codimension‐2 subspaces that are generated by taking a union of lines through the origin, and strong blocking sets in the corresponding projective space, which in turn are equivalent to minimal codes. Using this equivalence, we improve the current best upper bounds on the smallest size of a strong blocking set in finite projective spaces over fields of size at least 3. Furthermore, using coding theoretic techniques, we improve the current best lower bounds on a strong blocking set. Our main motivation for these new bounds is their application to trifferent codes, which are sets of ternary codes of length with the property that for any three distinct codewords there is a coordinate where they all have distinct values. Over the finite field , we prove that minimal codes are equivalent to linear trifferent codes. Using this equivalence, we show that any linear trifferent code of length has size at most , improving the recent upper bound of Pohoata and Zakharov. Moreover, we show the existence of linear trifferent codes of length and size at least , thus (asymptotically) matching the best lower bound on trifferent codes. We also give explicit constructions of affine blocking sets with respect to codimension‐2 subspaces that are a constant factor bigger than the best known lower bound. By restricting to , we obtain linear trifferent codes of size at least , improving the current best explicit construction that has size .

Blocking Planes by Lines in $\operatorname{PG}(n,q)$

Abstract:In this paper, we study the cardinality of the smallest set of lines of the finite projective spaces $\operatorname{PG}(n,q)$ such that every plane is incident with at least one line of the set. This is the first main open problem concerning the minimum size of $(s,t)$-blocking sets in $\operatorname{PG}(n,q)$, where we set $s=2$ and $t=1$. In $\operatorname{PG}(n,q)$, an $(s,t)$-blocking set refers to a set of $t$-spaces such that each $s$-space is incident with at least one chosen $t$-space. This is a notoriously difficult problem, as it is equivalent to determining the size of certain $q$-Turán designs and $q$-covering designs. We present an improvement on the upper bounds of Etzion and of Metsch via a refined scheme for a recursive construction, which in fact enables improvement in the general case as well.

Abstract:In many areas of applied geometric/numeric computational mathematics, including geo-mapping, computer vision, computer graphics, finite element analysis, medical imaging, geometric design, and solid modeling, one has to compute incidences, adjacencies and ordering of cells, generally using disparate and often incompatible data structures and algorithms. This paper introduces computational topology algorithms to discover the 2D/3D space partition induced by a collection of geometric objects of dimension 1D/2D, respectively. Methods and language are those of basic geometric and algebraic topology. Only sparse vectors and matrices are used to compute both spaces and maps, i.e., the chain complex, from dimension zero to three.

A partial order on antichains of a fixed size

Abstract:We introduce a new partial order on the set of all antichains of a fixed size in a given poset. When applied to minuscule posets, these partial orders give rise to distributive lattices that appear in the branching rules for minuscule representations of simply laced complex simple Lie algebras.

Abstract:This is the second of two papers investigating for which positive integers $m$ there exists a maximal antichain of size $m$ in the Boolean lattice $B_n$ (the power set of $[n]:=\{1,2,\dots,n\}$, ordered by inclusion). In the first part, the sizes of maximal antichains have been characterized. Here we provide an alternative construction with the benefit of showing that almost all sizes of maximal antichains can be obtained using antichains containing only $l$-sets and $(l+1)$-sets for some $l$.

Explicit constructions of optimal blocking sets and minimal codes

Abstract:A strong $s$-blocking set in a projective space is a set of points that intersects each codimension-$s$ subspace in a spanning set of the subspace. We present an explicit construction of such sets in a $(k - 1)$-dimensional projective space over $\mathbb{F}_q$ of size $O_s(q^s k)$, which is optimal up to the constant factor depending on $s$. This also yields an optimal explicit construction of affine blocking sets in $\mathbb{F}_q^k$ with respect to codimension-$(s+1)$ affine subspaces, and of $s$-minimal codes. Our approach is motivated by a recent construction of Alon, Bishnoi, Das, and Neri of strong $1$-blocking sets, which uses expander graphs with a carefully chosen set of vectors as their vertex set. The main novelty of our work lies in constructing specific hypergraphs on top of these expander graphs, where tree-like configurations correspond to strong $s$-blocking sets. We also discuss some connections to size-Ramsey numbers of hypergraphs, which might be of independent interest.

On three domination-based identification problems in block graphs

Abstract:The problems of determining the minimum-sized \emph{identifying}, \emph{locating-dominating} and \emph{open locating-dominating codes} of an input graph are special search problems that are challenging from both theoretical and computational viewpoints. In these problems, one selects a dominating set $C$ of a graph $G$ such that the vertices of a chosen subset of $V(G)$ (i.e. either $V(G)\setminus C$ or $V(G)$ itself) are uniquely determined by their neighborhoods in $C$. A typical line of attack for these problems is to determine tight bounds for the minimum codes in various graphs classes. In this work, we present tight lower and upper bounds for all three types of codes for \emph{block graphs} (i.e. diamond-free chordal graphs). Our bounds are in terms of the number of maximal cliques (or \emph{blocks}) of a block graph and the order of the graph. Two of our upper bounds verify conjectures from the literature - with one of them being now proven for block graphs in this article. As for the lower bounds, we prove them to be linear in terms of both the number of blocks and the order of the block graph. We provide examples of families of block graphs whose minimum codes attain these bounds, thus showing each bound to be tight.

Abstract:We propose a procedure of constructing new block designs starting from a given one by looking at the intersections of its blocks with various sets and grouping those sets according to the structure of the intersections. We introduce a symmetric relationship of friendship between block designs built on a set $V$ and consider families of block designs where all designs are friends of each other, the so-called friendly families. We show that a friendly family admits a partial ordering. Furthermore, we exhibit a map from the power set of $V$, partially ordered by inclusion, to a friendly family of a particular type which preserves the partial order.

Mathematical Foundations of Interlocking Assemblies

Abstract:The study of interlocking assemblies is an emerging field with applications in various disciplines. However, to this day, the mathematical treatment of these assemblies has been sparse. In this work, we develop a comprehensive mathematical theory for interlocking assemblies, providing a precise definition and a method for proving the interlocking property based on infinitesimal motions. We consider assemblies with crystallographic symmetries and verify interlocking properties for such assemblies. Our analysis includes the development of an infinite polytope with crystallographic symmetries to ensure that the interlocking property holds. For a certain block, called the RhomBlock, that can be assembled in numerous ways, characterised by the combinatorial theory of lozenges, we rigorously prove the interlocking property. By conclusively showing that any assembly of the RhomBlock is interlocking, we provide a robust framework for further exploration and application of interlocking assemblies.
