Abstract:We study the problem of finding complete conformal metrics determined by some symmetric function of the modified Schouten tensor on compact manifolds with boundary; which reduces to a Dirichlet problem. We prove the existence of the solution under some suitable conditions. In particular, we prove that every smooth compact n-dimensional manifold with boundary, with n >= 3, admits a complete Riemannian metric g whose Ricci curvature Ric(g) and scalar curvature R-g satisfydet(Ric(g) - R(g)g) = const.This result generalizes Aviles and McOwen's in the scalar curvature case.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of various harmonic maps from Hermitian manifolds to Kaehler, Hermitian and Riemannian manifolds respectively. By using refined Bochner formulas on Hermitian (possibly non-Kaehler) manifolds, we derive new rigidity results on Hermitian harmonic maps from compact Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds, and we also obtain the complex analyticity of pluri-harmonic maps from compact complex manifolds to compact Kaehler manifolds (and Riemannian manifolds) with non-degenerate curvatures, which are analogous to several fundamental results in [28,Siu], [14,Jost-Yau] and [26, Sampson].

Abstract:By simplifying the first and the second variation formulas of the energy functional and generalizing the Weitzenbock formula, we study the stability and the rigidity of harmonic maps between Finsler manifolds. It is proved that any nondegenerate harmonic map from a compact Einstein Riemannian manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature to a Berwald manifold with nonpositive flag curvature is totally geodesic and there is no nondegenerate stable harmonic map from a Riemannian unit sphere S-n (n > 2) to any Finsler manifold.

Abstract:In this paper, we will study harmonic functions on the complete and incomplete spaces with nonnegative Ricci curvature which exhibit inhomogeneous collapsing behaviors at infinity. The main result states that any nonconstant harmonic function on such spaces yields a definite exponential growth rate which depends explicitly on the geometric data at infinity.

Abstract:This paper shows that when the Riemannian metric on a contact manifold is blown up along the direction orthogonal to the contact distribution, the corresponding harmonic forms rescaled and normalized in the $L^2$-norms will converge to Rumin's harmonic forms. This proves a conjecture in Gromov `` Carnot-Caratheodory spaces seen from within '', IHES preprint, 1994. This result can also be reformulated in terms of spectral sequences, after Forman, Mazzeo-Melrose. A key ingredient in the proof is the fact that the curvatures become unbounded in a controlled way.

Abstract:Certain general conditions are put forth on a complete simply-connected Riemannian manifold of nonpositive curvature which guarantee that they support nontrivial bounded harmonic functions. This result includes the Cartan–Hadamard manifolds with curvature pinched between two negative constants and the bounded symmetric domains ${{\mathfrak{R}}_I(n,n)}$ and ${{\mathfrak{R}}_{II}(n)}$ (n ≥ 2) as special cases.

Abstract:Harmonic maps constitute a powerful tool for the analysis of moduli and Teichmuller spaces of compact Riemann surfaces. These moduli and Teichmuller spaces parametrize the different conformal structures a given compact differentiable surface F of some genus p can carry, together with a topological marking in the Teichmuller case. That is, each point in the moduli space Mp or the Teichmuller space Tp corresponds to some (marked) Riemann surface of genus p, that is, to some conformal structure on F . Mp then is a quotient of Tp by the mapping class group Γp, the group of homotopy classes of oriented diffeomorphisms of F . Since some nontrivial elements of Γp have fixed points, Mp acquires some quotient singularities. However, a suitable finite covering of Mp is free from singularities, that is, a manifold. Therefore, for many aspects, the singularities of Mp can be ignored, and this will sometimes simplify our discussion. – In this review, we shall confine ourselves mostly to the case p ≥ 2 which is the most difficult and most interesting case. Harmonic maps come from Riemannian geometry. They are defined as maps h : M → N between Riemannian manifolds that minimize a certain variational integral, called the energy. Thus, they depend on the Riemannian metrics of M and N . The theory works best when the metric of N has nonpositive sectional curvature. Harmonic maps can then be applied to moduli or Teichmuller spaces in two different ways. On one hand, one can look at harmonic maps to, from, or between Riemann surfaces and study how the harmonic maps or quantities associated to them, like their energy, depend on the underlying conformal structures. This is facilitated by the fact that the harmonic maps in question are unique in their homotopy classes, as we are looking at the case of genus p ≥ 2 which implies that the Riemann surfaces can be equipped with a hyperbolic metric, that is, one with constant negative curvature. Abstract:Recently reported transverse momentum distributions of strange hadrons produced in Pb(158AGeV) on Pb collisions and corresponding results from the relativistic quantum molecular dynamics (RQMD) approach are examined. We argue that the experimental observations favor a scenario in which multi-strange hadrons are formed and decouple from the system rather early at large energy densities (around 1 GeV/fm$^3$). The systematics of the strange and non-strange particle spectra indicate that the observed transverse flow develops mainly in the late hadronic stages of these reactions.

Abstract:The aim of this article is to investigate the presence of a conformal vector $\xi$ with conformal factor $\rho$ on a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ with or without boundary $\partial M$. We firstly prove that a compact Riemannian manifold $(M^n, g)\,,n \geq 3,$ with constant scalar curvature, with boundary $\partial M$ totally geodesic, in such way that the traceless Ricci curvature is zero in the direction of $\nabla \rho,$ is isometric to a standard hemisphere. In the $4$-dimensional case, under the condition $\displaystyle\int_M|\mathring{Ric}|^2\langle \xi,\nabla \rho\rangle \,dM\leq0$, we show that, either $M$ is isometric to a standard sphere, or $M$ is isometric to a standard hemisphere. Finally, we give a partial answer for the cosmic no-hair conjecture.

Abstract:Motivated by the theory of harmonic maps on Riemannian surfaces, conformal-harmonic maps between two Riemannian manifolds $M$ and $N$ were introduced in search of a natural notion of harmonicity for maps defined on a general even dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$. They are critical points of a conformally invariant energy functional and reassemble the GJMS operators when the target is the set of real or complex numbers. On a four dimensional manifold, conformal-harmonic maps are the conformally invariant counterparts of the intrinsic bi-harmonic maps and a mapping version of the conformally invariant Paneitz operator for functions. In this paper, we consider conformal-harmonic maps from certain locally conformally flat 4-manifolds into spheres. We prove a quantitative uniqueness result for such conformal-harmonic maps as an immediate consequence of convexity for the conformally-invariant energy functional. To this end, we are led to prove a version of second order Hardy inequality on manifolds, which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:Let M be a compact boundaryless Riemannian manifold. We derive the equations on M which characterize asymptotic vectors on Diff(vol)(M) . We classify those M's whose volume-preserving diffeomorphism groups admit asymptotic vectors which are represented by harmonic vector fields on M. We then show that these harmonic solutions can be used to construct other (typically non-harmonic) solutions.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that in a three-manifold with finitely many expansive ends, such that each end has a neighborhood where the curvature is bounded above by a negative constant, the Dirichlet problem at infinity is solvable, and hence that such manifolds posses a wealth of bounded non constant harmonic functions (and thus, Liouville's theorem does not hold). In the case of infinitely many expansive ends, we show that if each end has a neighborhood where the curvature is bounded above by a negative constant, then the Dirichlet problem at infinity is solvable for continuous boundary data at infinity which is uniformly bounded. Our method is based on a result that does not require explicit curvature assumptions, and hence it can be applied to other situations: we present an example of a metric on an end with curvature of indefinite sign (no matter how long we go along the end) for which the Dirichlet Problem at Infinity is solvable with respect to that end. We also present a related result in the case of surfaces with a pole which generalises a celebrated criteria of Milnor.
