Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of various harmonic maps from Hermitian manifolds to Kaehler, Hermitian and Riemannian manifolds respectively. By using refined Bochner formulas on Hermitian (possibly non-Kaehler) manifolds, we derive new rigidity results on Hermitian harmonic maps from compact Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds, and we also obtain the complex analyticity of pluri-harmonic maps from compact complex manifolds to compact Kaehler manifolds (and Riemannian manifolds) with non-degenerate curvatures, which are analogous to several fundamental results in [28,Siu], [14,Jost-Yau] and [26, Sampson].

Abstract:By simplifying the first and the second variation formulas of the energy functional and generalizing the Weitzenbock formula, we study the stability and the rigidity of harmonic maps between Finsler manifolds. It is proved that any nondegenerate harmonic map from a compact Einstein Riemannian manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature to a Berwald manifold with nonpositive flag curvature is totally geodesic and there is no nondegenerate stable harmonic map from a Riemannian unit sphere S-n (n > 2) to any Finsler manifold.

Abstract:This paper is to study further some properties of harmonic maps between Finsler manifolds. Some rigidity theorems for harmonic maps between Finsler manifolds are given. By introducing the stress-energy tensor of maps between Finsler manifolds, some integral formulas are obtained. Moreover, it is proved that any conformal strongly harmonic map from an n(>2)-dimensional Finsler manifold to a Finsler manifold must be homothetic.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the existence of harmonic maps from a Finsler manifold and study the characterisation of harmonic maps, in the spirit of Ishihara. Using heat equation method we show that any map from a compact Finsler manifold M to a compact Riemannian manifold with non-positive sectional curvature can be deformed into a harmonic map which has minimum energy in its homotopy class.

Abstract:In this paper, we study Riemannian maps whose base manifolds admit a Ricci soliton and give a non-trivial example of such a Riemannian map. First, we find Riemannian curvature tensor for the base manifolds of Riemannian map $F$. Further, we obtain the Ricci tensor and calculate the scalar curvature of the base manifold. Moreover, we obtain necessary conditions for the leaves of $rangeF_\ast$ to be Ricci soliton, almost Ricci soliton, and Einstein. We also obtain necessary conditions for the leaves of $(rangeF_\ast)^\bot$ to be Ricci soliton and Einstein. Also, we calculate the scalar curvatures of $rangeF_\ast$ and $(rangeF_\ast)^\bot$ by using Ricci soliton. Finally, we study the harmonicity and biharmonicity of such a Riemannian map. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for such a Riemannian map between Riemannian manifolds to be harmonic. We also obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for a Riemannian map from a Riemannian manifold to a space form that admits Ricci soliton to be harmonic and biharmonic.

Abstract:Motivated by the theory of harmonic maps on Riemannian surfaces, conformal-harmonic maps between two Riemannian manifolds $M$ and $N$ were introduced in search of a natural notion of harmonicity for maps defined on a general even dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$. They are critical points of a conformally invariant energy functional and reassemble the GJMS operators when the target is the set of real or complex numbers. On a four dimensional manifold, conformal-harmonic maps are the conformally invariant counterparts of the intrinsic bi-harmonic maps and a mapping version of the conformally invariant Paneitz operator for functions. In this paper, we consider conformal-harmonic maps from certain locally conformally flat 4-manifolds into spheres. We prove a quantitative uniqueness result for such conformal-harmonic maps as an immediate consequence of convexity for the conformally-invariant energy functional. To this end, we are led to prove a version of second order Hardy inequality on manifolds, which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:Conformal harmonic maps from a 4-dimensional conformal manifold to a Riemannian manifold are maps satisfying a certain conformally invariant fourth order equation. We prove a general existence result for conformal harmonic maps, analogous to the Eells–Sampson theorem for harmonic maps. The proof uses a geometric flow and relies on results of Gursky–Viaclovsky and Lamm.

Abstract:It is well known that no non‐trivial Killing vector field exists on a compact Riemannian manifold of negative Ricci curvature; analogously, no non‐trivial harmonic one‐form exists on a compact manifold of positive Ricci curvature. One can consider the following, more general, problem. By reducing the assumption on the Ricci curvature to one on the scalar curvature, such vanishing theorems cannot hold in general. This raises the question: “What information can we obtain from the existence of non‐trivial Killing vector fields (or, respectively, harmonic one‐forms)?” This paper gives answers to this problem; the results obtained are optimal. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification 53C20 (primary), 53C24 (secondary).

Abstract:Certain general conditions are put forth on a complete simply-connected Riemannian manifold of nonpositive curvature which guarantee that they support nontrivial bounded harmonic functions. This result includes the Cartan–Hadamard manifolds with curvature pinched between two negative constants and the bounded symmetric domains ${{\mathfrak{R}}_I(n,n)}$ and ${{\mathfrak{R}}_{II}(n)}$ (n ≥ 2) as special cases.

Abstract:In this paper, we study conformal submersions from Ricci solitons to Riemannian manifolds with non-trivial examples. First, we study some properties of the O'Neill tensor $A$ in the case of conformal submersion. We also find a necessary and sufficient condition for conformal submersion to be totally geodesic and calculate the Ricci tensor for the total manifold of such a map with different assumptions. Further, we consider a conformal submersion $F:M \to N$ from a Ricci soliton to a Riemannian manifold and obtain necessary conditions for the fibers of $F$ and the base manifold $N$ to be Ricci soliton, almost Ricci soliton and Einstein. Moreover, we find necessary conditions for a vector field and its horizontal lift to be conformal on $N$ and $(KerF_\ast)^\bot,$ respectively. Also, we calculate the scalar curvature of Ricci soliton $M$. Finally, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for $F$ to be harmonic.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the associated family of harmonic maps $\mathcal{F}: M \rightarrow G/K$ from a Riemann surface $M$ into inner symmetric spaces of compact or non-compact type which are either algebraic or totally symmetric. These notions are the two components of the definition of a harmonic map of finite uniton number, as stated by [2]. We finish this paper by comparing these to notions and by stating a conjecture.

Abstract:Let $\varphi\in C^0 \cap W^{1,2}(\Sigma, X)$ where $\Sigma$ is a compact Riemann surface, $X$ is a compact locally CAT(1) space, and $W^{1,2}(\Sigma,X)$ is defined as in Korevaar-Schoen. We use the technique of harmonic replacement to prove that either there exists a harmonic map $u:\Sigma \to X$ homotopic to $\varphi$ or there exists a conformal harmonic map $v:\mathbb S^2 \to X$. To complete the argument, we prove compactness for energy minimizers and a removable singularity theorem for conformal harmonic maps.
