Abstract:We present an elementary combinatorial proof of the celebrated Friendship theorem. The proof involves looking at independent sets and constructing a bound on their size which forces a contradiction.

Abstract:The Friendship Theorem states that if in a party any pair of persons has precisely one common friend, then there is always a person who is everybody's friend and the theorem has been proved by Paul Erdös, Alfréd Rényi, and Vera T. Sós in 1966. This paper was written in response to the question, ``What would happen if the hypothesis stating that any pair of persons has exactly one common friend were replaced with one stating that any pair of persons warms to exactly one person?". We call a digraph obtained in this way a friendship digraph. It is easy to check that a symmetric friendship digraph becomes a friendship graph if each directed cycle of length two is replaced with an edge. Based on this observation, one can say that a friendship digraph is a generalization of a friendship graph. In this paper, we provide a digraph formulation of the Friendship Theorem by defining friendship digraphs as those in which any two distinct vertices have precisely one common out-neighbor. We also establish a sufficient and necessary condition for the existence of friendship digraphs.

Abstract:In this article, we shall generalize a theorem due to Frobenius in group theory, which asserts that if $p$ is a prime and $p^{r}$ divides the order of a finite group, then the number of subgroups of order $p^{r}$ is $\equiv$ 1(mod $p$). Interestingly, our proof is purely combinatorial and does not use much group theory.

Abstract:Proofs of Tychonoff's theorem often seem to require a bit of magic. Machinery such as ultrafilters, nets or maximal families with the finite intersection property are employed to give proofs that can be very neat, but not the kind of thing that one would naturally think of when presented with the problem (given a background in standard open set topology). Here we present a direct and pretty simple proof of Tychonoff's theorem, straight from the open cover definition of compactness.

Abstract:Win proved a well-known result that the graph G of connectivity κ ( G ) with α ( G ) ≤ κ ( G ) + k − 1 ( k ≥ 2) has a spanning k -ended tree, i.e., a spanning tree with at most k leaves. In this paper, the authors extended the Win theorem in case when κ ( G ) = 1 to the following: Let G be a simple connected graph of order large enough such that α ( G ) ≤ k + 1 ( k ≥ 3) and such that the number of maximum independent sets of cardinality k + 1 is at most n − 2 k − 2. Then G has a spanning k -ended tree.

History and Overview

Abstract:This note is purely expository and is in Russian. We show how to prove interesting combinatorial results using the local Lovasz lemma. The note is accessible for students having basic knowledge of combinatorics; the notion of independence is defined and the Lovasz lemma is stated and proved. Our exposition follows `Probabilistic methods' of N. Alon and J. Spencer. The main difference is that we show how the proof could have been invented. The material is presented as a sequence of problems, which is peculiar not only to Zen monasteries but also to advanced mathematical education; most problems are presented with hints or solutions.

Abstract:We present fully formalized proofs of some central theorems from combinatorics. These are Dilworth's decomposition theorem, Mirsky's theorem, Hall's marriage theorem and the Erdős-Szekeres theorem. Dilworth's decomposition theorem is the key result among these. It states that in any finite partially ordered set (poset), the size of a smallest chain cover and a largest antichain are the same. Mirsky's theorem is a dual of Dilworth's decomposition theorem, which states that in any finite poset, the size of a smallest antichain cover and a largest chain are the same. We use Dilworth's theorem in the proofs of Hall's Marriage theorem and the Erdős-Szekeres theorem. The combinatorial objects involved in these theorems are sets and sequences. All the proofs are formalized in the Coq proof assistant. We develop a library of definitions and facts that can be used as a framework for formalizing other theorems on finite posets.

Combinatorial proof of a Non-Renormalization Theorem

Abstract:We provide a direct combinatorial proof of a Feynman graph identity which implies a wide generalization of a formality theorem by Kontsevich. For a Feynman graph $\Gamma$, we associate to each vertex a position $x_v \in \mathbb R$ and to each edge $e$ the combination $s_e = a_e^{-\frac 12} \left( x^+_e - x^-_e \right)$, where $x^\pm_e$ are the positions of the two end vertices of $e$, and $a_e$ is a Schwinger parameter. The "topological propagator" $P_e = e^{-s_e^2}\text d s_e$ includes a part proportional to $\text d x_v$ and a part proportional to $\text d a_e$. Integrating the product of all $P_e$ over positions produces a differential form $\alpha_\Gamma$ in the variables $a_e$. We derive an explicit combinatorial formula for $\alpha_\Gamma$, and we prove that $\alpha_\Gamma \wedge \alpha_\Gamma=0$.

Abstract:Given $n$-vertex simple graphs $X$ and $Y$, the friends-and-strangers graph $\mathsf{FS}(X, Y)$ has as its vertices all $n!$ bijections from $V(X)$ to $V(Y)$, where two bijections are adjacent if and only if they differ on two adjacent elements of $V(X)$ whose mappings are adjacent in $Y$. We consider the setting where $X$ and $Y$ are both edge-subgraphs of $K_{r,r}$: due to a parity obstruction, $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ is always disconnected in this setting. Modestly improving a result of Bangachev, we show that if $X$ and $Y$ respectively have minimum degrees $\delta(X)$ and $\delta(Y)$ and they satisfy $\delta(X) + \delta(Y) \geq \lfloor 3r/2 \rfloor + 1$, then $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ has exactly two connected components. This proves that the cutoff for $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ to avoid isolated vertices is equal to the cutoff for $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ to have exactly two connected components. We also consider a probabilistic setup in which we fix $Y$ to be $K_{r,r}$, but randomly generate $X$ by including each edge in $K_{r,r}$ independently with probability $p$. Invoking a result of Zhu, we exhibit a phase transition phenomenon with threshold function $(\log r)/r$: below the threshold, $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ has more than two connected components with high probability, while above the threshold, $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ has exactly two connected components with high probability. Altogether, our results settle a conjecture and completely answer two problems of Alon, Defant, and Kravitz.

Abstract:The usage of elementary submodels is a simple but powerful method to prove theorems, or to simplify proofs in infinite combinatorics. First we introduce all the necessary concepts of logic, then we prove classical theorems using elementary submodels. We also present a new proof of Nash-Williams's theorem on cycle-decomposition of graphs, and finally we improve a decomposition theorem of Laviolette concerning bond-faithful decompositions of graphs.

Abstract:Given graphs $X$ and $Y$ with vertex sets $V(X)$ and $V(Y)$ of the same cardinality, the friends-and-strangers graph $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ is the graph whose vertex set consists of all bijections $\sigma:V(X)\to V(Y)$, where two bijections $\sigma$ and $\sigma'$ are adjacent if they agree everywhere except for two adjacent vertices $a,b \in V(X)$ such that $\sigma(a)$ and $\sigma(b)$ are adjacent in $Y$. The most fundamental question that one can ask about these friends-and-strangers graphs is whether or not they are connected; we address this problem from two different perspectives. First, we address the case of "typical" $X$ and $Y$ by proving that if $X$ and $Y$ are independent Erdős-Rényi random graphs with $n$ vertices and edge probability $p$, then the threshold probability guaranteeing the connectedness of $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ with high probability is $p=n^{-1/2+o(1)}$. Second, we address the case of "extremal" $X$ and $Y$ by proving that the smallest minimum degree of the $n$-vertex graphs $X$ and $Y$ that guarantees the connectedness of $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ is between $3n/5+O(1)$ and $9n/14+O(1)$. When $X$ and $Y$ are bipartite, a parity obstruction forces $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ to be disconnected. In this bipartite setting, we prove analogous "typical" and "extremal" results concerning when $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ has exactly $2$ connected components; for the extremal question, we obtain a nearly exact result.
