Abstract:By means of a nested sequence of some critical pieces constructed by Kozlovski, Shen, and van Strien, and by using a covering lemma recently proved by Kahn and Lyubich, we prove that a component of the filled-in Julia set of any polynomial is a point if and only if its forward orbit contains no periodic critical components. It follows immediately that the Julia set of a polynomial is a Cantor set if and only if each critical component of the filled-in Julia set is aperiodic. This result was a conjecture raised by Branner and Hubbard in 1992.

Abstract:We present fully formalized proofs of some central theorems from combinatorics. These are Dilworth's decomposition theorem, Mirsky's theorem, Hall's marriage theorem and the Erdős-Szekeres theorem. Dilworth's decomposition theorem is the key result among these. It states that in any finite partially ordered set (poset), the size of a smallest chain cover and a largest antichain are the same. Mirsky's theorem is a dual of Dilworth's decomposition theorem, which states that in any finite poset, the size of a smallest antichain cover and a largest chain are the same. We use Dilworth's theorem in the proofs of Hall's Marriage theorem and the Erdős-Szekeres theorem. The combinatorial objects involved in these theorems are sets and sequences. All the proofs are formalized in the Coq proof assistant. We develop a library of definitions and facts that can be used as a framework for formalizing other theorems on finite posets.

Abstract:An extension of Szemerédi's Theorem is proved for sets of positive density in approximate lattices in general locally compact and second countable abelian groups. As a consequence, we establish a recent conjecture of Klick, Strungaru and Tcaciuc. Via a novel version of Furstenberg's Correspondence principle, which should be of independent interest, we show that our Szemerédi Theorems can be deduced from a general \emph{transverse} multiple recurrence theorem, which we establish using recent works of Austin.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop Terence Tao's harmonic analysis method and apply it to restricted sumsets. The well-known Cauchy–Davenport theorem asserts that if ∅≠A, B⊆Z/pZ with p a prime, then |A+B|⩾min{p,|A|+|B|−1}, where A+B={a+b:a∈A,b∈B}. In 2005, Terence Tao gave a harmonic analysis proof of the Cauchy–Davenport theorem, by applying a new form of the uncertainty principle on Fourier transform. We modify Tao's method so that it can be used to prove the following extension of the Erdős–Heilbronn conjecture: If A,B,S are non-empty subsets of Z/pZ with p a prime, then |{a+b:a∈A,b∈B,a−b∉S}|⩾min{p,|A|+|B|−2|S|−1}.

A combinatorial proof of a partition perimeter inequality

Abstract:The partition perimeter is a statistic defined to be one less than the sum of the number of parts and the largest part. Recently, Amdeberhan, Andrews, and Ballantine proved the following analog of Glaisher's theorem: for all $m \geq 2$ and $n \geq 1$, there are at least as many partitions with perimeter $n$ and parts $\not \equiv 0 \pmod{m}$ as partitions with perimeter $n$ and parts repeating fewer than $m$ times. In this work, we provide a combinatorial proof of their theorem by relating the combinatorics of the partition perimeter to that of compositions. Using this technique, we also show that a composition theorem of Huang implies a refinement of another perimeter theorem of Fu and Tang.

Abstract:Proofs of Tychonoff's theorem often seem to require a bit of magic. Machinery such as ultrafilters, nets or maximal families with the finite intersection property are employed to give proofs that can be very neat, but not the kind of thing that one would naturally think of when presented with the problem (given a background in standard open set topology). Here we present a direct and pretty simple proof of Tychonoff's theorem, straight from the open cover definition of compactness.

Non-Commutative Formulas and Frege Lower Bounds: a New Characterization of Propositional Proofs.

Abstract:Does every Boolean tautology have a short propositional-calculus proof? Here, a propositional-calculus (i.e. Frege) proof is any proof starting from a set of axioms and deriving new Boolean formulas using a fixed set of sound derivation rules. Establishing any super-polynomial size lower bound on Frege proofs (in terms of the size of the formula proved) is a major open problem in proof complexity, and among a handful of fundamental hardness questions in complexity theory by and large. Non-commutative arithmetic formulas, on the other hand, constitute a quite weak computational model, for which exponential-size lower bounds were shown already back in 1991 by Nisan [20], using a particularly transparent argument. In this work we show that Frege lower bounds in fact follow from corresponding size lower bounds on non-commutative formulas computing certain polynomials (and that such lower bounds on non-commutative formulas must exist, unless NP=coNP ). More precisely, we demonstrate a natural association between tautologies T to non-commutative polynomials p , such that: •if T has a polynomial-size Frege proof then p has a polynomial-size non-commutative arithmetic formula; and conversely, when T is a DNF, if p has a polynomial-size non-commutative arithmetic formula over GF (2) then T has a Frege proof of quasi-polynomial size. The argument is a characterization of Frege proofs as non-commutative formulas: we show that the Frege system is (quasi-) polynomially equivalent to a non-commutative Ideal Proof System (IPS), following the recent work of Grochow and Pitassi [10] that introduced a propositional proof system in which proofs are arithmetic circuits, and the work in [35] that considered adding the commutator as an axiom in algebraic propositional proof systems. This gives a characterization of propositional Frege proofs in terms of (non-commutative) arithmetic formulas that is tighter than (the formula version of IPS) in Grochow and Pitassi [10], in the following sense: (i) The non-commutative IPS is polynomial-time checkable -- whereas the original IPS was checkable in probabilistic polynomial-time; and (ii) Frege proofs unconditionally quasi-polynomially simulate the non-commutative IPS -- whereas Frege was shown to efficiently simulate IPS only assuming that the decidability of PIT for (commutative) arithmetic formulas by polynomial-size circuits is efficiently provable in Frege.

Abstract:We prove the Box Conjecture for pairs of commuting nilpotent matrices, as formulated by Iarrobino et al [28]. This describes the Jordan type of the dense orbit in the nilpotent commutator of a given nilpotent matrix. Our main tool is the Burge correspondence between the set of all partitions and a set of binary words [15, 16]. For connection with the algebraic and geometric setup of matrices and orbits we employ some of Shayman's results on invariant subspaces of a nilpotent matrix [45, 46]. Our proof is valid over an arbitrary field.

Abstract:The famous hypercontractive estimate discovered independently by Gross, Bonami and Beckner has had a great impact on combinatorics and theoretical computer science since it was first used in this setting in a seminal paper by Kahn, Kalai and Linial. The usual proofs of this inequality begin with two-point space, where some elementary calculus is used and then generalised immediately by introducing another dimension using submultiplicativity (Minkowski's integral inequality). In this paper, we prove this inequality using information theory. We compare the entropy of a pair of correlated vectors in {0,1}n to their separate entropies, analysing them bit by bit (not as a figure of speech, but as the bits are revealed) using the chain rule of entropy.

Abstract:Motivated by questions asked by Erdos, we prove that any set $A\subset{\mathbb N}$ with positive upper density contains, for any $k\in{\mathbb N}$, a sumset $B_1+\cdots+B_k$, where $B_1,\dots,B_k\subset{\mathbb N}$ are infinite. Our proof uses ergodic theory and relies on structural results for measure preserving systems. Our techniques are new, even for the previously known case of $k=2$.

Abstract:Kakutani's fixed point theorem is a generalization of Brouwer's fixed point theorem to upper semicontinuous multivalued maps and is used extensively in game theory and other areas of economics. Earlier works have shown that Sperner's lemma implies Brouwer's theorem. In this paper, a new combinatorial labeling lemma, generalizing Sperner's original lemma, is given and is used to derive a simple proof for Kakutani's fixed point theorem. The proof is constructive and can be easily applied to numerically approximate the location of fixed points. The main method of the proof is also used to obtain a generalization of Kakutani's theorem for discontinuous maps which are locally gross direction preserving.

Abstract:In this article, we studied the inverse Erdős-Heilbronn problem with the restricted sumset from two components $A$ and $B$ that are not necessarily the same. We give a completely elementary proof for the problem in $\mathbb{Z}$ and some partial results that contributes to the elementary proof of the problem in $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$, avoiding the usage of the powerful polynomial method and the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz.

Abstract:It is well known and not difficult to prove that if $C$ of integers has positive upper Banach density, the set of differences $C-C$ is syndetic, i.e. the length of gaps is uniformly bounded. More surprisingly, Renling Jin showed that whenever $A$ and $B$ have positive upper Banach density, then $A-B$ is piecewise syndetic. Jin's result follows trivially from the first statement provided that $B$ has large intersection with a shifted copy $A-n$ of $A$. Of course this will not happen in general if we consider shifts by integers, but the idea can be put to work if we allow "shifts by ultrafilters". As a consequence we obtain Jin's Theorem.
