Abstract:In this short note we review results on equilibrium shapes of minimizers to the sessile drop problem. More precisely, we study the Winterbottom problem and prove that the Winterbottom shape is indeed optimal. The arguments presented here are based on relaxation and the (anisotropic) isoperimetric inequality.

Abstract:We consider surfaces in ${\mathbb R}^3$ of type ${\mathbb S}^2$ which minimize the Willmore functional with prescribed isoperimetric ratio. The existence of smooth minimizers was proved by Schygulla (Archive Rational Mechanics and Analysis, 2012). In the singular limit when the isoperimetric ratio converges to zero, he showed convergence to a double round sphere in the sense of varifolds. Here we give a full blowup analysis of this limit, showing that the two spheres are connected by a catenoidal neck. Besides its geometric interest, the problem was studied as a simplified model in the theory of cell membranes, see e.g. Berndl, Lipowsky, Seifert (Physical Review A, 1991).

Abstract:Inspired by a planar partitioning problem involving multiple improper chambers, this article investigates using classical techniques what can be said of the existence, uniqueness, and regularity of minimizers in a certain free-endpoint isoperimetric problem. By restricting to curves which are expressible as graphs of functions, a full existence-uniqueness-regularity result is proved using a convexity technique inspired by work of Talenti. The problem studied here can be interpreted physically as the identification of the equilibrium shape of a sessile liquid drop in half-space (in the absence of gravity). This is a well-studied variational problem whose full resolution requires the use of geometric measure theory, in particular the theory of sets of finite perimeter, but here we present a more direct, classical geometrical approach. Conjectures on improper planar partitioning problems are presented throughout.

Abstract:Motivated by a model for lipid bilayer cell membranes, we study the minimization of the Willmore functional in the class of oriented closed surfaces with prescribed total mean curvature, prescribed area, and prescribed genus. Adapting methods previously developed by Keller-Mondino-Rivière, Bauer-Kuwert, and Ndiaye-Schätzle, we prove existence of smooth minimizers for a large class of constraints. Moreover, we analyze the asymptotic behaviour of the energy profile close to the unit sphere and consider the total mean curvature of axisymmetric surfaces.

The isominwidth problem on the 2-sphere

Abstract:Pál's isominwidth theorem states that for a fixed minimal width, the regular triangle has minimal area. A spherical version of this theorem was proven by Bezdek and Blekherman, if the minimal width is at most $\tfrac \pi 2$. If the width is greater than $\tfrac \pi 2$, the regular triangle no longer minimizes the area at fixed minimal width. We show that the minimizers are instead given by the polar sets of spherical Reuleaux triangles. Moreover, stability versions of the two spherical inequalities are obtained.

Shape optimization for contact problem involving Signorini unilateral conditions

Abstract:This paper investigates a shape optimization problem involving the Signorini unilateral conditions in a linear elastic model, without any penalization procedure. The shape sensitivity analysis is performed using tools from convex and variational analysis such as proximal operators and the notion of twice epi-differentiability. We prove that the solution to the Signorini problem admits a directional derivative with respect to the shape which moreover coincides with the solution to another Signorini problem. Then, the shape gradient of the corresponding energy functional is explicitly characterized which allows us to perform numerical simulations to illustrate this methodology.

Abstract:We establish lower semicontinuity results for perimeter functionals with measure data on $\mathbb{R}^n$ and deduce the existence of minimizers to these functionals with Dirichlet boundary conditions, obstacles, or volume-constraints. In other words, we lay foundations of a perimeter-based variational approach to mean curvature measures on $\mathbb{R}^n$ capable of proving existence in various prescribed-mean-curvature problems with measure data. As crucial and essentially optimal assumption on the measure data we identify a new condition, called small-volume isoperimetric condition, which sharply captures cancellation effects and comes with surprisingly many properties and reformulations in itself. In particular, we show that the small-volume isoperimetric condition is satisfied for a wide class of $(n{-}1)$-dimensional measures, which are thus admissible in our theory. Our analysis includes infinite measures and semicontinuity results on very general domains.

This paper is concerned with the stability of the ball for a class of isoperimetric problems under a convexity constraint. Considering the problem of minimizing [math] among convex subsets of [math] of fixed volume, where [math] is the perimeter functional, [math] is a perturbative term, and [math] is a small parameter, the stability of the ball for this perturbed isoperimetric problem means that the ball is the unique (local, up to translation) minimizer for any [math] sufficiently small. We investigate independently two specific cases where [math] is an energy arising from PDE theory, namely, the capacity and the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of a domain [math]. While in both cases stability fails among all shapes, in the first case we prove the (nonsharp) stability of the ball among convex shapes, by building an appropriate competitor for the capacity of a perturbation of the ball. In the second case we prove the sharp stability of the ball among convex shapes by providing the optimal range of [math] such that stability holds, relying on the selection principle technique and a regularity theory under convexity constraint.

Free energy minimizers with radial densities: classification and quantitative stability

Abstract:We study the isoperimetric problem with a potential energy $g$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ weighted by a radial density $f$ and analyze the geometric properties of minimizers. Notably, we construct two counterexamples demonstrating that, in contrast to the classical isoperimetric case $g = 0$, the condition $\ln(f)'' + g' \geq 0$ does not generally guarantee the global optimality of centered spheres. However, we demonstrate that centered spheres are globally optimal when both $f$ and $g$ are monotone. Additionally, we strengthen this result by deriving a sharp quantitative stability inequality.

Regularity in shape optimization under convexity constraint

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the regularity of shape optimizers of a class of isoperimetric problems under convexity constraint. We prove that minimizers of the sum of the perimeter and a perturbative term, among convex shapes, are C 1,1-regular. To that end, we define a notion of quasi-minimizer fitted to the convexity context and show that any such quasi-minimizer is C 1,1-regular. The proof relies on a cutting procedure which was introduced to prove similar regularity results in the calculus of variations context. Using a penalization method we are able to treat a volume constraint, showing the same regularity in this case. We go through some examples taken from PDE theory, that is when the perturbative term is of PDE type, and prove that a large class of such examples fit into our C 1,1-regularity result. Finally we provide a counterexample showing that we cannot expect higher regularity in general.

Abstract:This article is concerned with the minimization of peak stresses occurring in linear elasticity. We propose to minimize the maximal von Mises stress of the elastic body. This leads to a non-smooth shape functional. We derive the shape derivative and associate it with the Clarke sub-differential. Using a steepest descent algorithm, we present numerical simulations. We compare our results to the usual [Formula: see text]-norm regularization and show that our algorithm performs better in the presented tests.This article is part of the theme issue 'Non-smooth variational problems with applications in mechanics'.

Abstract:We investigate isometric immersions of disks with constant negative curvature into R3, and the minimizers for the bending energy, i.e. the L2 norm of the principal curvatures over the class of W2,2 isometric immersions. We show the existence of smooth immersions of arbitrarily large geodesic balls in H2 into R3. In elucidating the connection between these immersions and the non-existence/singularity results of Hilbert and Amsler, we obtain a lower bound for the L∞ norm of the principal curvatures for such smooth isometric immersions. We also construct piecewise smooth isometric immersions that have a periodic profile, are globally W2,2, and numerically have lower bending energy than their smooth counterparts. The number of periods in these configurations is set by the condition that the principal curvatures of the surface remain finite and grow approximately exponentially with the radius of the disk. We discuss the implications of our results on recent experiments on the mechanics of non-Euclidean plates.
Shape optimisation for nonlocal anisotropic energies

Abstract:In this paper we consider shape optimisation problems for sets of prescribed mass, where the driving energy functional is nonlocal and anisotropic. More precisely, we deal with the case of attractive/repulsive interactions in two and three dimensions, where the attraction is quadratic and the repulsion is given by an anisotropic variant of the Coulomb potential. Under the sole assumption of strict positivity of the Fourier transform of the interaction potential, we show the existence of a threshold value for the mass above which the minimiser is an ellipsoid, and below which the minimiser does not exist. If, instead, the Fourier transform of the interaction potential is only nonnegative, we show the emergence of a dichotomy: either there exists a threshold value for the mass as in the case above, or the minimiser is an ellipsoid for any positive value of the mass.

Abstract:We consider a liquid drop sitting on a rough solid surface at equilibrium, a volume constrained minimizer of the total interfacial energy. The large-scale shape of such a drop strongly depends on the micro-structure of the solid surface. Surface roughness enhances hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity properties of the surface, altering the equilibrium contact angle between the drop and the surface. Our goal is to understand the shape of the drop with fixed small scale roughness. To achieve this, we develop a quantitative description of the drop and its contact line in the context of periodic homogenization theory, building on the qualitative theory of Alberti and DeSimone.
