Abstract:In this short note we review results on equilibrium shapes of minimizers to the sessile drop problem. More precisely, we study the Winterbottom problem and prove that the Winterbottom shape is indeed optimal. The arguments presented here are based on relaxation and the (anisotropic) isoperimetric inequality.

Abstract:We consider surfaces in ${\mathbb R}^3$ of type ${\mathbb S}^2$ which minimize the Willmore functional with prescribed isoperimetric ratio. The existence of smooth minimizers was proved by Schygulla (Archive Rational Mechanics and Analysis, 2012). In the singular limit when the isoperimetric ratio converges to zero, he showed convergence to a double round sphere in the sense of varifolds. Here we give a full blowup analysis of this limit, showing that the two spheres are connected by a catenoidal neck. Besides its geometric interest, the problem was studied as a simplified model in the theory of cell membranes, see e.g. Berndl, Lipowsky, Seifert (Physical Review A, 1991).

Abstract:In finite-dimensions, minimal surfaces that fill in the space delineated by closed curves and have minimal area arose naturally in classical physics in several contexts. No such concept seems readily available in infinite dimensions. The present work is motivated by the need for precisely such a concept that would allow natural coordinates for a surface with a boundary of a closed curve in the Wasserstein space of probability distributions (space of distributions with finite second moments). The need for such a concept arose recently in stochastic thermodynamics, where the Wasserstein length in the space of thermodynamic states quantifies dissipation while area integrals (albeit, presented in a special finite-dimensional parameter setting) relate to useful work being extracted. Our goal in this work is to introduce the concept of a minimal surface and explore options for a suitable construction. To this end, we introduce the basic mathematical problem and develop two alternative formulations. Specifically, we cast the problem as a two-parameter Benamou-Breiner type minimization problem and derive a minimal surface equation in the form of a set of two-parameter partial differential equations. Several explicit solutions for minimal surface equations in Wasserstein spaces are presented. These are cast in terms of covariance matrices in Gaussian distributions.
On the minimization of the Willmore energy under a constraint on total mean curvature and area

Abstract:Motivated by a model for lipid bilayer cell membranes, we study the minimization of the Willmore functional in the class of oriented closed surfaces with prescribed total mean curvature, prescribed area, and prescribed genus. Adapting methods previously developed by Keller-Mondino-Rivière, Bauer-Kuwert, and Ndiaye-Schätzle, we prove existence of smooth minimizers for a large class of constraints. Moreover, we analyze the asymptotic behaviour of the energy profile close to the unit sphere and consider the total mean curvature of axisymmetric surfaces.

Abstract:The Trachenko–Brazhkin equation of the minimal possible viscosity is analysed, emphasising its validity by the account of multibody interactions between flowing species through some effective masses replacing their true (bare) masses. Pressure affects the effective masses, decreasing them and shifting the minimal viscosity and the temperature at which it is attained to higher values. The analysis shows that effective masses in the Trachenko–Brazhkin equation are typically lighter compared bare masses; e.g., for tin (Sn) the effective mass is m = 0.21mSn, whereas for supercritical argon (Ar), it changes from m = 0.165mAr to m = 0.129mAr at the pressures of 20 and 100 MPa, respectively.

Existence and regularity of min-max anisotropic minimal hypersurfaces

Abstract:In any closed smooth Riemannian manifold of dimension at least three, we use the min-max construction to find anisotropic minimal hyper-surfaces with respect to elliptic integrands, with a singular set of codimension~$2$ vanishing Hausdorff measure. In particular, in a closed $3$-manifold, we obtain a smooth anisotropic minimal surface. The critical step is to obtain a uniform upper bound for density ratios in the anisotropic min-max construction. This confirms a conjecture by Allard [Invent. Math., 1983].

Abstract:We prove a compactness principle for the anisotropic formulation of the Plateau problem in any codimension, in the same spirit of the previous works of the authors \cite{DelGhiMag,DePDeRGhi,DeLDeRGhi16}. In particular, we perform a new strategy for the proof of the rectifiability of the minimal set, based on the new anisotropic counterpart of the Allard rectifiability theorem proved by the authors in \cite{DePDeRGhi2}. As a consequence we provide a new proof of Reifenberg existence theorem.

Abstract:The Mahler volume of a centrally symmetric convex body K is defined as M(K)= (Vol K)(Vol K^dual). Mahler conjectured that this volume is minimized when K is a cube. We introduce the bottleneck conjecture, which stipulates that a certain convex body K^diamond subset K X K^dual has least volume when K is an ellipsoid. If true, the bottleneck conjecture would strengthen the best current lower bound on the Mahler volume due to Bourgain and Milman. We also generalize the bottleneck conjecture in the context of indefinite orthogonal geometry and prove some special cases of the generalization.

Abstract:Using the generalized Yau parameter method and the Sylvester theory, we verify that if M is a compact minimal hypersurface in Sn+1 whose squared length of the second fundamental form satisfies 0≤|A|2−n≤n22, then |A|2≡n and M is a Clifford torus. Moreover, we prove that if M is a complete self-shrinker with polynomial volume growth in Rn+1, and if the squared length of the second fundamental form of M satisfies 0≤|A|2−1≤121, then |A|2≡1 and M is a round sphere or a cylinder. Our results improve the rigidity theorems due to Ding and Xin [21], [22].

Abstract:The minimal volume of a closed manifold $M$ is the infimum of the volume of $(M,g)$ over all metrics $g$ with sectional curvature between $-1$ and $1$. We introduce a variant called the essential minimal volume, $\mathrm{ess-Minvol}(M)$, which is the limit, as $\delta>0$ goes to $0$, of the infimum of the volume of the $\delta$-thick part of $(M,g)$ over all metrics $g$ with sectional curvature between $-1$ and $1$. We show that, for some universal constant $C>0$, any closed Einstein 4-manifold $M$ with Euler characteristic $e(M)$ satisfies $$C^{-1}e(M) \leq \mathrm{ess-Minvol}(M) \leq Ce(M).$$ As a corollary, these inequalities are true for the essential minimal volume of closed complex surfaces of nonnegative Kodaira dimension. We conjecture that those linear bounds in fact hold for the minimal volume.

Abstract:We study notions of asymptotic regularity for a class of minimal submanifolds of complex hyperbolic space that includes minimal Lagrangian submanifolds. As an application, we show a relationship between an appropriate formulation of Colding-Minicozzi entropy and a quantity we call the CR-volume that is computed from the asymptotic geometry of such submanifolds.
