Abstract:In this note we obtain some properties of the Cheeger set $C_\Omega$ asociated to a $k$-rotationally symmetric planar convex body $\Omega$. More precisely, we prove that $C_\Omega$ is also $k$-rotationally symmetric and touches all the edges of $\Omega$.

Abstract:Convex hull (CH) is widely used in computer graphic, image processing, CAD/CAM, and pattern recognition. We investigate CH properties and derive new properties: (1) CH vertices’ coordinates monotonically increase or decrease, (2) The edge slopes monotonically decrease. Using these properties, we proposed two algorithms, i.e., CH algorithm for planar point set, and CH algorithm for two available CHs. The main ideas of the proposed algorithms are as follows. A planar point set is divided into several subsets by the extreme points, and vertices in these subsets are then separately calculated. During the computation, the CH properties are used to eliminate concave points. This can reduce the computational cost and then improves the speed. Our first algorithm can extract CH with O(nlogn) time, which is the lower bound of planar CH extraction, and the second algorithm can obtain CH with O(m+n) time at the worst case.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the Cheeger problem for non-convex domains, with a particular interest in the case of planar strips, which have been extensively studied in recent years. Our main results are an estimate on the Cheeger constant of strips, which is stronger than the previous one known from Krejčiřík and Pratelli (Pac J Math 254(2):309–333, 2011), and the proof that strips share with convex domains a number of crucial properties with respect to the Cheeger problem. Moreover, we present several counterexamples showing that the same properties are not valid for generic non-convex domains.

Abstract:Let K be a convex body (a compact convex set) in , that contains a copy of another body S in every possible orientation. Is it always possible to continuously move any one copy of S into another, inside K ? As a stronger question, is it always possible to continuously select, for each orientation, one copy of S in that orientation? These questions were asked by Croft. We show that, in two dimensions, the stronger question always has an affirmative answer. We also show that in three dimensions the answer is negative, even for the case when S is a line segment – but that in any dimension the first question has a positive answer when S is a line segment. And we prove that, surprisingly, the answer to the first question is negative in dimensions four and higher for general S .

Abstract:Giannopoulos, Hartzoulaki and Paouris asked in \cite{GHP} whether the best ratio between volume and surface area of convex bodies sharing a given orthogonal projection onto a fixed hyperplane is attained in the limit by a cylinder over the given projection. The answer to the question is known to be negative. In this paper, we prove a characterization of the positive answer in dimension $3$, using the Cheeger set of the common projection. A partial characterization is given in higher dimensions. We also prove that certain canal classes of convex bodies provide families of convex bodies satisfying a closely related inequality for a similar ratio.

Abstract:We are interested in finding sharp bounds for the Cheeger constant $h$ via different geometrical quantities, namely the area $|\cdot|$, the perimeter $P$, the inradius $r$, the circumradius $R$, the minimal width $\omega$ and the diameter $d$. We provide new sharp inequalities between these quantities for planar convex bodies and enounce new conjectures based on numerical simulations. In particular, we completely solve the Blaschke-Santal\'o diagrams describing all the possible inequalities involving the triplets $(P,h,r)$, $(d,h,r)$ and $(R,h,r)$ and describe some parts of the boundaries of the diagrams of the triplets $(\omega,h,d)$, $(\omega,h,R)$, $(\omega,h,P)$, $(\omega,h,|\cdot|)$, $(R,h,d)$ and $(\omega,h,r)$.

Abstract:An infinite sequence of sets $\left\{B_{n}\right\}_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ is said to be a heterochromatic sequence from an infinite sequence of families $\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{n} \right\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$, if there exists a strictly increasing sequence of natural numbers $\left\{ i_{n}\right\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ such that for all $n \in \mathbb{N}$ we have $B_{n} \in \mathcal{F}_{i_{n}}$. In this paper, we have proved that if for each $n\in\mathbb{N}$, $\mathcal{F}_n$ is a family of {\em nicely shaped} convex sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ such that each heterochromatic sequence $\left\{B_{n}\right\}_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ from $\left\{ \mathcal{F}_{n} \right\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ contains at least $k+2$ sets that can be pierced by a single $k$-flat ($k$-dimensional affine space) then all but finitely many families in $\left\{\mathcal{F}_{n}\right\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ can be pierced by finitely many $k$-flats. This result can be considered as a {\em countably colorful} generalization of the $(\aleph_0, k+2)$-theorem proved by Keller and Perles (Symposium on Computational Geometry 2022). We have also established the tightness of our result by proving a number of no-go theorems.

On Convex Geometric Graphs with no $k+1$ Pairwise Disjoint Edges

Abstract:A well-known result of Kupitz from 1982 asserts that the maximal number of edges in a convex geometric graph (CGG) on $n$ vertices that does not contain $k+1$ pairwise disjoint edges is $kn$ (provided $n>2k$). For $k=1$ and $k=n/2-1$, the extremal examples are completely characterized. For all other values of $k$, the structure of the extremal examples is far from known: their total number is unknown, and only a few classes of examples were presented, that are almost symmetric, consisting roughly of the $kn$ "longest possible" edges of $CK(n)$, the complete CGG of order $n$. In order to understand further the structure of the extremal examples, we present a class of extremal examples that lie at the other end of the spectrum. Namely, we break the symmetry by requiring that, in addition, the graph admit an independent set that consists of $q$ consecutive vertices on the boundary of the convex hull. We show that such graphs exist as long as $q \leq n-2k$ and that this value of $q$ is optimal. We generalize our discussion to the following question: what is the maximal possible number $f(n,k,q)$ of edges in a CGG on $n$ vertices that does not contain $k+1$ pairwise disjoint edges, and, in addition, admits an independent set that consists of $q$ consecutive vertices on the boundary of the convex hull? We provide a complete answer to this question, determining $f(n,k,q)$ for all relevant values of $n,k$ and $q$.

Abstract:We consider the eigenvalue problem $\Delta^{\mathbb{S}^2} \xi + 2 \xi=0 $ in $ \Omega $ and $\xi = 0 $ along $ \partial \Omega $, being $\Omega$ the complement of a disjoint and finite union of smooth and bounded simply connected regions in the two-sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$. Imposing that $|\nabla \xi|$ is locally constant along $\partial \Omega$ and that $\xi$ has infinitely many maximum points, we are able to classify positive solutions as the rotationally symmetric ones. As a consequence, we obtain a characterization of the critical catenoid as the only embedded free boundary minimal annulus in the unit ball whose support function has infinitely many critical points.

Abstract:We prove a lower bound for the Cheeger constant of a cylinder $\Omega\times (0,L)$, where $\Omega$ is an open and bounded set. As a consequence, we obtain existence of minimizers for the shape functional defined as the ratio between the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian and the $p$-th power of the Cheeger constant, within the class of bounded convex sets in any $\mathbb{R}^N$. This positively solves open conjectures raised by Parini (J. Convex Anal. (2017)) and by Briani-Buttazzo-Prinari (Ann. Mat. Pura Appl. (2023)).

Beyond Cheeger's constant

Abstract:The Cheeger constant of an open set of the Euclidean space is defined by minimizing the ratio "perimeter over volume", among all its smooth compactly contained subsets. We consider a natural variant of this problem, where the volume of admissible sets is raised to any positive power. We show that for {\it sublinear} powers, all these generalized Cheeger constants are equivalent to the standard one, by means of a universal two-sided estimate. We also show that this equivalence breaks down for {\it superlinear} powers. In this case, some weird phenomena appear. We finally consider the case of convex planar sets and prove an existence result, under optimal assumptions.

Abstract:We show that for any Minkowski centered planar convex compact set $C$ the Harmonic mean of $C$ and $-C$ can be optimally contained in the arithmetic mean of the same sets if and only if the Minkowski asymmetry of $C$ is at most the golden ratio $(1+\sqrt{5})/2 \approx 1.618$. Moreover, the most asymmetric such set that is (up to a linear transformation) a special pentagon, which we call the golden house.

Abstract:We will prove that an origin-symmetric star-convex body $K$ with sufficiently smooth boundary and such that every hyperplane section of $K$ passing through the origin is a body of affine revolution, is itself a body of affine revolution. This will give a positive answer to the recent question asked by G. Bor, L. Hernández-Lamoneda, V. Jiménez de Santiago, and L. Montejano-Peimbert, though with slightly different prerequisites.

Denote the degree of $\Gamma$ by $d$, its edge Cheeger constant by $\mathfrak{h}_\Gamma$, and its vertex Cheeger constant by $h_\Gamma$. Assume that $\Gamma$ is undirected, non-bipartite. We prove that the edge bipartiteness constant of $\Gamma$ is $\Omega({\mathfrak{h}_\Gamma}/{d})$, the vertex bipartiteness constant of $\Gamma$ is $\Omega(h_\Gamma)$, and the smallest eigenvalue of the normalized adjacency operator of $\Gamma$ is $-1 + \Omega({h_\Gamma^2}/{d^2})$. This answers in the affirmative a question of Moorman, Ralli and Tetali on the lower spectral gap of Cayley sum graphs.
